Introduction

The Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield (Anthem) Employee Assistance Program (EAP) is dedicated to offering services that help employees and their families with personal and work-related issues.

In this catalog, we list the names of available EAP trainings and provide a brief description of each topic covered.

Training logistics

}} Most trainings are 60 to 90 minutes long. If more or less time is needed, your EAP account manager will be happy to accommodate your needs.

Employee orientation A brief overview of Anthem EAP services

This training will help employees learn when and how to use the EAP. It covers topics like why people call, how the process works, confidentiality and cost.

Manager/supervisor orientation An in-depth review of Anthem EAP services

This training will explain how a manager or supervisor can access services when dealing with challenging employee performance and behavior.

EAP risk management

Addressing substance abuse at work

This training will cover the impact of substance abuse and addiction in the workplace. It shares resources and referral information employees can access through Verizon and Anthem EAP. Managers and supervisors will also learn about their responsibilities, including the duty to engage with and guide employees who may be struggling with addiction.

Domestic violence awareness for individuals

This training will review the warning signs of domestic violence and provide recommendations for how affected employees can respond, as well as how others can offer support to those affected.

Domestic violence awareness for managers

This training will explore the impact of domestic violence in the workplace and help you promote awareness. It will also offer guidance on how management can respond to and support affected employees.

Drug-free workplace — employee training

This training will review the warning signs of drug addiction and how it affects the workplace. It will cover the EAP services available to help employees struggling with this issue.

Drug-free workplace — manager/supervisor training

This training will explore the legal and psychological effects of alcohol and drug abuse, including prescription medication, in the workplace. You’ll learn the associated risks, rules and consequences for the employee, employer and management.

Respectful workplace — employee training

This training will address diversity in the modern workforce and help reinforce a culture of respect.

Respectful workplace — manager/supervisor training

This training will address diversity in the modern workforce and help you build a culture of respect.

Family issues

Advance directives

It’s often hard to talk about the future with aging parents and other relatives. This training will help guide you through those important discussions about health concerns, emotional issues, and financial and legal matters. You’ll also learn about housing options and support services for the elderly at home and in their communities.

Bullying

In this training, you’ll learn what bullying is and discuss how to know if your child is a bully or being bullied. We’ll also talk about family situations that can lead to bullying and cover cyberbullying.

Caregiving

Nearly one out of three Americans provides care for an older family member. This training will cover the issues of self-care, how to assess family needs and keeping balance in your life. We’ll also talk about common emotions caregivers may have and special caregiving situations.

Children and divorce

This training will discuss divorce’s impact on children. We’ll cover how to talk to your children about divorce, help them communicate their feelings, and ease their adjustment to living in multiple homes, as well as other topics.

Children and stress

Stress affects children as young as 7 years old. How can we help them have strong coping skills for a happier and more balanced childhood? This training outlines the causes and signs of stress; when, as a parent, you should be alarmed; and what red flags to look for in your children.

Creating work-life balance

Even in these challenging times, it’s possible to meet the competing demands of job and family. In this fun, interactive training, you’ll learn the four pillars of work-life balance and how to prioritize what’s important to you.

Dual-career relationships

Dual-career relationships are here to stay and require special attention for long-term success. Recognizing that some may not have grown up with a dual-career model, this program gives participants the tools to keep these complex relationships strong.

Elder care 101

It’s common for one family member to be the only caregiver for an older relative. But this can cause frustration and make you tired — both physically and emotionally. This training will teach you how to make caregiving a family affair and resolve conflicts with other family members.

Emergency preparedness

This training will help you prepare for emergencies like natural disasters. We’ll talk about how to protect your home, yourself, loved ones, pets and prized possessions.

Handling a family crisis

This training will help you better handle family crises and times of change. It can also be geared toward management learning how to support employees going through these situations.

Internet information for parents

This training will look at the language, benefits and risks of the Internet. We’ll help you identify online concerns and learn how to use social media safely, as well as provide a list of resources and monitoring software.

Parenting 101

This hands-on course details the trials and tribulations of parenting. We’ll discuss basic parenting values and how they apply to real-life situations. Topics include discipline, eating, sleeping, academics and values.

Preparing for college

A child going to college is a major family milestone and household dynamics may never be the same. This training will help you and your family members prepare for this transition.

Self-defense training

In this training, we’ll review the statistics on personal safety and how to protect yourself. We’ll talk about the pros and cons of different safety measures and look at best practices for self-defense.

Single parenting

This training covers the difficulties of raising children alone. You’ll learn how to care for your child’s needs while also making time for yourself.

Surviving and thriving through divorce

This training provides helpful and practical information for those going through a divorce or separation. You’ll get an overview of the divorce process and legal information, as well as learn new coping skills and how to survive the emotional toll of divorce or separation.

Teaching our children about money

Surveys repeatedly show that many teenagers don’t understand even basic financial concepts. This training will teach you how to talk to children about money. We’ll discuss parental attitudes about allowances and working, how to set goals, and encourage good spending and saving habits.

The Sandwich Generation

Most employees today will have to care for an older relative while still taking care of their own families. This is known as the “Sandwich Generation.” This training will talk about the issues that this generation faces and coping strategies.

Today’s family challenges and changes

Whether you have a two-parent, blended or single-parent family, you face the same tough parenting challenges. This discussion-based training will explore the evolution of “family” as we know it and offer some best practices for keeping our families happy and healthy.

Parenting your teen: at-risk behavior

This training will address the realities of raising teens today — the good news and bad news. You’ll learn how to recognize at-risk behavior and address it -- and have the opportunity to talk about your parenting fears.

Parenting your teen: career and life goals

In this training, we’ll discuss career and life goals for your teens. You’ll look at your teen’s personal values, interests and work skills. And you’ll learn how to help your teen discover his or her true passions.

Parenting your teen: communicating

Does it feel like you and your teen are speaking different languages? In this training, you’ll get the tools to find common ground and communicate better with your teen.

Parenting your teen: finances

Educating your teens about money and financial responsibility will make a big difference for their futures. This training will help you teach teens about setting financial goals and becoming independent spenders.

Parenting your teen: friends and family

This training will help you understand the difference between the teen/family and teen/friend relationship. We’ll discuss how to approach communication breakdowns and behavioral challenges with your teen.

Alternative medicine: fact or fiction?

In this training, you’ll learn about popular alternative or complementary medicine and how it can improve your health and well-being. Topics include chiropractic, homeopathy, herbal and Chinese medicine, naturopathy, acupuncture and therapeutic massage.

Breast health awareness

Breast health is an issue for men and women. And it’s important to recognize the signs and symptoms of disease early, when treatment is easier and more effective. This training will teach you how to monitor your breast health and when it’s time to call the doctor.

Building self-confidence

Self-confidence can be a great source of personal strength. It gives us the courage to face new challenges and set new goals. This training will help motivate you to believe in yourself, step outside your comfort zone and generally build self-esteem.

Clean living

Clean living is an integrative mind-body approach to enjoying a healthier life by getting rid of toxins. This seminar will explore a healthier way of eating by including whole, real and nutrient-rich food. You’ll identify toxic products used in the home, discuss the use of vitamins and supplements and learn other options to support a clean living lifestyle.

Conquering fear and anxiety

In this training, you’ll delve into your fears and anxieties to better understand and manage them. We’ll help you learn to control those negative thoughts.

Diabetes 101

Are negative thoughts normal? Yes. It’s not the thoughts themselves that are the issue, rather it’s when we believe the thoughts. In this seminar, you’ll identify the symptoms and causes of negative thoughts and learn strategies to get rid of them. You’ll also learn to recognize when you might need help and how to find it.

Eating for high energy

We all want to be at our best, every day. This training looks at the role of nutrition in getting us there. We’ll learn about which foods energize our mind and body, and how to eat for fuel.

This class will look at the dynamics of this environment and provide tools for managing the range of emotions we feel, talking with co-workers regarding sensitive issues as well as taking care of ourselves and increasing our resiliency.

Lightening your life with laughter

When life gets stressful, laughter can be the best medicine. In this training, we’ll learn about the history of this approach and how to tap into laughter’s therapeutic benefits.

In this training, you’ll learn how to make the most of your brainpower. We’ll draw heavily from current research on neuroplasticity, the brain’s ability to continue growing throughout our lifetimes.

Menopause 101

Called “the change of life,” menopause can affect women very differently. In this training, you’ll learn about perimenopause, the period just before menopause, and what menopause itself can feel like. You’ll get testing information, coping strategies, and the pros and cons of certain treatment options.

Men’s health 101

In this training, we’ll talk about some of the leading causes of illness and death in men. You’ll find out what makes men’s health different, risk factors and important screenings for men, and how to find the right doctor for you.

New Year’s resolutions

Even though this training is meant for the New Year, we can approach every day as the beginning of new possibilities! Participation is highly encouraged as we discuss making and following through on resolutions.

Power of positive thinking

In this training, we’ll explore the power of positive thinking to transform our lives and relationships. You’ll learn how to change your perspective for a more rewarding life.

Power of volunteering

Giving of yourself has long been known to bring great physical, emotional and intellectual satisfaction. In this training, we talk about the benefits of volunteering for both individuals and organizations.

Promote family health

Families should take care of each other. In this training, you’ll learn how to promote healthy living on the home front.

Relationships 101

This examines what makes a healthy relationship. Does your partner want to see you grow and thrive? Do you feel fulfilled? Are you communicating with each other successfully? Our discussion will explore all of these questions and more.

Relaxation 101

In this introductory meditation training, you’ll learn how to relax using guided imagery and breathing. You’ll also discover the effects of daily meditation on productivity and sleep.

Seasonal affective disorder

Do you notice a difference in your attitude, mood and energy as the days get shorter and nights longer? Then, you might have seasonal affective disorder (SAD). This training will define SAD, including how to distinguish it from clinical depression and how to understand its causes, symptoms and treatments.
