An Actor Network Theory study of Princess Yachts and its Connections to Stonehouse
This study creates a Toolkit inspired by the Actor
Network Theory that is designed to be applicableto other similar situations.
The study investigates how Princess Yachts mayor may not have connections through Social,
Infrastructural and Business networks with the
Stonehouse district from where it originated. This is conducted through two levels of initialResearch designed to inform understandingsof Observations when compiled in the Prolingstage.
The study nds minimal connection to the areaon any level and suggests several potential points
of further investigation to understand why this isand how it may be resolved.

The ANT and Princess Yachts
Stonehouse, on the edge of Devonport, is a largely industry based region of Plymouth - Ofwhich the most prominent industry is Princess Yachts whom although are not just sited inStonehouse, but spread all across Plymouth with worldwide sales and sourcing - have theirHeadquarters and main production buildings located at Newport Street in Stonehouse.
With the business originating in Stonehouse at Newport Street back in 1965 under the trading
name of Marine Projects Plymouth (Princess Yachts, 2013). It questions to ask how connectedto the area the company is after staying in the same location for over 50 years.
I aim to use an Actor Network Theory (ANT) based study - due to its exibility of application- to help to identify how Princess Yachts interacts and connects within Stonehouse. Byconducting the research, I aim to create a standard set of Tools for analysing and applyingsimilar questioning to other businesses and further expanding the research. As such, the
chosen methodologies and routes of research are carefully chosen for their ability to bereplicated, expanded and transferred.
Actor (or Actant) Network Theory developed in the eld of sociology, science andtechnology as a method to help understand the complex connections that exist in our
sociotechnical world (Cressman, 2009: 4). Originally introduced to the English speakingworld by Bruno Latour, Michel Callon and John Law, ANT is to be considered not so much a
theory as the name suggests, but instead as a research tool or style. The methodologies andperspectives of identifying key Agents, both human and non-human (but always physicalmatter), combined with the mapping of social and physical Networks between them, canbe adapted to any subject as, every Actor is its own Network and every Network can bean Actor depending upon the perspective (Latour, 2005: 45). This allows for a theoreticallyendless research environment.
5

5/24/2018 ANT Report
6/72
Critically as a resource, ANT cannot be reduced to a nal answer or catch-all theory(Cressman, 2009: 3) however provides a unique view into sociotechnical structure that may
not be apparent from using conventional research methods with xed. An ANT study canallow existing Actors to recover the ability to make up their own theories as to what the socialis made from.
In the ANT, the study takes place in the present, (Derrida, 1996: 37) however is reective upon
wider knowledge. Information will be analysed and conrmed to be acting in the Presentwhere possible to conrm potential ongoing controversies. The perspective framework is therst stage to be initially dened through an appropriate methodology to dene the startingactors. The framework is as objective as possible due to the unpredictable nature of the
routes and results. The framework can be dened through initial research to follow the actor/actors via interviews and ethnographic research or by examining inscriptions. The essentialrules of ANT Methodologies are as follows:
1) You shall not restrain your observation to any single theory or methodology;2) You shall observe from as many viewpoints as possible;
3) You shall listen to actors voices more than to your own presumptions.(Venturini, T. 2010: 3)
ANT has no scale of space and is dened by the situation. In order to spatially relate ndingsand research, information will be geographically mapped and listed to allow for easy
documentation and reection, this will begin to outline the framework of research. In the case of Princess Yachts the initial framework can begin as a physical search for Actors
to be dened by geographically locating their main operational centre and key humanActors as well as identifying the products produced and the locations where it is immediately
obvious that conduct operations for the company.
Initially the study will follow the backbone infrastructure and networks of the company, attempting to Just observe and describe controversies (Latour, B., Venturini, T. 2010). Thiswill help to create a general understanding of the company. This will be achieved through
internet based research, combined with interviews with Actors identied as related to theselected organisation.
Yaneva (2012: 3) speaking on the Actor Network Theory states that We forget the divides,
and we follow, document and map the controversy as it unfolded We follow the actors,
-
5/24/2018 ANT Report
7/72
their statements, their own interpretations of the world, and the networks that they traceWe can describe what happens in these situations. By this Yaneva reinforces the idea ofusing initial research not to inform the investigation until the investigation is complete, butthen using it to explain and understand the results.
ANT is notoriously difcult to explain and dene and is best expressed through worked researchexamples. In order to help dene ANT in a more understandable manner, this study will act asan example and aim to summarise an interpreted version of the ANT that can be applied insimilar situations as a research Tool.
This exercise will attempt to create and use clear Tools that work as a replicable precedentthat can be applied elsewhere in other situations and to provide a base after the study fromwhich new questions can be asked to take the study further as Actor-Network Theory does
not end at the completion of the study.
Latour, B. states in his 2005 book Reassembling the Social: An Introduction to Actor-Network-Theory. That an ANT researcher should keep four diaries that cover a Log of Enquiry,
Categorized Information, Ad-Hoc Ideas, and Ongoing Developments and PrivateOpinions to document the ANT trail prior to transference to chronological written form this
aims to make the nal documentation of the stages easier and clearer to transcribe.

Introducing the Toolkit
As an ANT researcher, it is necessary to interpret and equip a strategy of investigation to
allow exibility and multi-directionality in the research. This can be established from the initial
question of research - This is usually devisable from the How/Who/When/Where/Why/Whatpart of the question. This establishes the initial theme of the research. In the case of this ANTresearch, the question in this study is How? How is Princess Yachts connected to Stonehouseafter over 50 years of production on the site? The How indicates a search for patterns, connections and trends.

9/72
The initial tool of investigation to be applied shall be the PRIMARY RESEARCH Stage, thisshall involve online searches and document reviews to gain as much information about theexisting infrastructure from the framework of a publically available perspective. Weaknessesin this approach should become apparent where only openly public material is available
and further information is required/desired to expand understanding, this shall be addressedby the next tool.
The next tool shall be the SECONDARY RESEARCH Stage, secondary research entailsidentifying relevant gaps in the information presented from the Primary Research stage.Secondary research includes qualitative and quantitative research including direct contactwith relevant individuals and groups, this may be through phone calls, correspondence, interviews and surveys. Visual scouting may be required to clarify some research points into
the Present.
The third tool is where the key trait of ANT comes into play, the OBSERVATION Stage, this iswhere the knowledge gained from the two initial stages is used to decipher what you areobserving. Observation should take place at a critical junction relative to the topic. This
will allow for the most controversies to occur visibly. This stage although blind to all otheroccurrences shall inform the next stage.
The PROFILING Stage is where signicant actors are identied from the Observation stageand the information is analysed identifying patterns, connections and trends. At this stage
the conclusions should be becoming evident, however the toolkit can also be reassessed, and any new questions and missed areas of research can be revisited through returning
to the Observation stage. Proling will be summarised under three levels of connection:Infrastructure Networks, Business Networks and Personnel/Social Networks.

Primary Research Tool Stage
Building the Framework
The Primary Research Stage requires that background research into Princess Yachts is
conducted, this will be conducted as suggested through online searching and document
reviews in order to build up an initial picture of the company to reect upon retrospectivelywhen using the later Tools. Searches should cover News articles, Social media, publications, website content and available imagery - Search term examples remained relevant to theoriginal question e.g. Princess Yachts Stonehouse however was expanded as required toexplore search routes e.g. 40M.
Initially the personal website of Princess Yachts (referred to as PY throughout this document)was researched (Princess Yachts, 2013), this was then expanded to general search engine(Google, 2013) result websites which revealed the following:
The company sells vessels internationally and has a vast network of distributors, centredmainly around Europe and the East coast of the United States. 90% of their produce isexported, (UK Marine Alliance, 2011).
The company employs over 2000 people across its sites. (Princess Yachts, 2013).
Where they commute from will be investigated in the Secondary Research Tool Stage.
They currently construct 24 various vessels of which their newest vessel is the 40M, whichis their largest to date. Details regarding this boat are solely sales related.
- The 40M has the largest composite hull ever built in Britain (Megayachts, 2013).
- The rst 40M was completed in early 2012 (Megayacht News, 2011).- The Second was completed and delivered to Russia in December 2013(Superyacht Times, 2013) this site also mentioned an additional Actor in the

PY network, Mark Berryman, whose yacht interior design company is based inSouthampton, (Markberrymandeign, 2014).- The 40M is being constructed in the new South Yard facility in Devonport, thelatest addition to the PY infrastructure. (Boat International, 2014).
o The South Yard Site was designed by ADG Architects in Plymouth, (ADG,2013).
As Architects ADG have to understand the company they are working for, so they will beinterviewed in the Secondary Research Tool Stage.
The company is regularly advertising vacancies, they also offer apprenticeshipschemes on site and through local colleges, (The Herald, 2013).
The company advertising is conducted by Ubiquitous, (Ubiquitous, 2014). Initial searches reveal three sites for PY in Plymouth, Newport Street, Coypool road, andThe sales ofce in Sutton Harbour, however Mitel, the internal VOIP communicationssupplier suggests that there are six sites located around Plymouth (Mitel, 2013)
Expansion from Newport Street suggests and excess of spatial requirements
unsustainable within the Stonehouse based site alone.
Further research into locations and functions of the sites aforementioned to be investigated
in the Secondary Research Tool Stage.
Several companies associated with PY as resources providing Associates:- Airbus (Princess Yachts, 2013). - Bristol- Rolls Royce (Princess Yachts, 2013). - Bristol- Bombardier (Princess Yachts, 2013). London- Ryder (Ryder, 2012), provider of commercial vehicles to the company. - Wiltshire
- Dometic Marine (Dometic, 2011), provider of Air conditioning and sanitationequipment. Plymouth- The initial associated companies apart from Dometic, appear to be non-local, however Dometic suggests that PY has connections to its more localisedsurroundings, potentially directly with other businesses in Stonehouse which wouldhelp to answer the initial question of the document.

Additional companies will be attempted to identied, located and investigated in theObservation and Proling Tool Stages.
The company regularly attends international and national Boat shows (Princess YachtsInternational PLC Facebook, 2014).
The company is owned by LVMH (Princess Yachts, 2013), and managed by Chris Gates. The company recently received a 5 Million Regional Growth Fund (RGF) in order tocreate the new site in Devonport and prevent the threat from Chris Gates to move toGermany and leave Plymouth.
Is Plymouth becoming less suitable for the company? - If so, How? Although not directly
observable, the Proling Tool Stage should begin to identify any justications for this questionas potentially connections to Stonehouse may be weak and dissuasive of the Princess yachtspresence.
At this point a sufcient quantity of information regarding the story of Princess Yachts hasbeen identied and documented it is now necessary to move to the Secondary Research
Tool Stage.

Secondary Research Tool Stage
Refning the Framework
This Secondary Research Stage draws upon and expands from questions asked in the Primary
Research Stage, deviating from web-based research. The areas to further research identiedin the Primary Stage are as follows:
Where are the other aforementioned 3 Princess Yachts Sites? What tasks are each of the Princess Yachts sites responsible for? What Information can ADG provide regarding the new South Yard project and existingmethodologies, functions and requirements of Princess Yachts?
Where do the employees commute from?
Is Plymouth becoming less suitable for the company? If so, How?
To discover the identity of the other locations and their responsibilities within the organisation,
an Interview with one of the known sites is necessary. The selected site for interview was
the Princess Yachts Sales ofce in Sutton Harbour, this is due to it being the most openlyaccessible site with a public entrance able to be approached without prior consent and
after an email to the Newport Street P.R. Ofce was ignored, a more forward impromptuinterview was conducted. The interview was conducted on 09/12/2013 at 1pm.
The interview events, information and observations from the visit to Sutton Harbour Sales
Ofce are as follows:
The building was entered and the front desk secretary was consulted as to whetherthere was somebody in the ofce who could spend a few minutes explaining how thecompany worked as part of a study of the company.
The secretary referred me to a Sales woman - name undisclosed who explained tome that the Sales ofce is in fact a completely separate company to Princess Yachts

and in fact not related to the main Princess Yachts facility.
However she explained that they are partly associated with quality control assessmentsand nal nishes to the boats prior to sale and during design stages. At this point a man in a lifejacket arrived with a Princess Yachts Jacket carrying a PYlabelled package that had just been delivered by the Royal mail.
He explained that he was responsible for logistics and nal nishing touches prior to
export. The lady at this point left to nd some brochures for general interest. The man was then asked if he could identify on a map of Plymouth where the suspected6 sites were located and what function each site had, he identied the following:
- South Yard, Devonport the new facility responsible for building the followingboats:
o 98 Flybridgeo 32Mo 35M
o 40M- Felix Engineering, Lee Mill that consists of two sites responsible for parts salesand the following boats:
o V39o V42
- Langage, Plympton responsible for the following boats:o 88 Flybridge
o 60 Flybridge- Coypool, Marsh Mills responsible for making various hulls and componentmoulds as well as storing logistics vehicles.- Newport Street, Stonehouse The main logistical facility and origin of the
company, responsible for making and assembling parts for the majority of therange, launching and nal assembly.
At this point the woman returned with 2 Brochures and a digital CD version, onlater reection these documents are entirely sales related however the quality of thepresentation suggests and conrms that the sales are aimed at the high-premiummarket, created by the earlier noted company Ubiquitous.

The woman stated that the year 2013 had been particularly busy and productive forsales and that they had to return to continue work.
After this the interview was terminated.
The sites identied by the man in the lifejacket were then mapped using Bing Maps (BingMaps, 2013).

The next investigation was to visually scout and clarify and conrm the information gainedfrom The Sales ofce and conrm that in the Present time all sites are functioning as supposedand all having a potential impact upon the Stonehouse yard. The Scouting aims to brieyexamine initial outward appearance of each of the sites, at this point a brief observation
of each of the sites was conducted on 16/12/2013, each site was photographed from theentrance and any relevant observations noted. (All subsequent Photographs by B. Pitcher(Maps from Bing Maps (2014))).

The next point of investigation was with ADG, the architectural practice identied as asignicant Actor involved in the design of the new South Yard project in Devonport with theaim of understanding their knowledge of PY and further information regarding the SouthyardProject.
ADG were contacted on 16/12/2013, and a reply was received on the same day inviting meto an interview on 19/12/2013. (Correspondence documented in Appendix).
Bob McDonald was interviewed at 14:30 on 19/12/2013, the following was recounted by him:
o Initially he explained the proposal for the South Yard project and what wasdesigned, he did this through explaining the three-stage drawings submitted tothe planning department back in March 2009. (See South Yard Planning drawingswith site details in appendix).o The design consists of 3 repeated building blocks with the intention of theproviding the facilities to construct vessels up to 50 metres in length, however onlyfor the 40M for the present range.
o There is a dry-dock proposed over slip 2 as well as a helipad and a smallset of ofces with the intention of one day moving the main ofces to South Yard.
The usual sequential building system adopted by the company for the construction oftheir smaller boats had to be rethought for the larger vessels to be made in situe.
o He explained that the current system has the employees working in smallclose-knit groups of 2 or 3 people per boat.
He explained that the site originally requested for purchase by Princess Yachts wasexpanded to include several listed buildings also located in South Yard, this means the
military who currently own the land no longer have to nance their upkeep.
The process of transporting boats was also an issue that had to be considered as theexisting system of moving boats by lorry was not possible for the 40M boat and the boats
were instead required to be launched from South Yard and sailed to their destinations.
o As a result Slip 2 was specied to be refurbished to allow access to thewater to launch the vessels.

o Plymouth Sound is used as a testing area for the boats due to the calmwaters.
Currently he highlighted that only the ground-works on the slipway had been startedfor the project so as not to invalidate the 3 year starting restriction on the planningpermission.
o The 40M is currently being constructed from a temporary canvas
warehouse located on the site adjacent to building S130 out of which PY alsocurrently operates. (See Southyard Planning drawings with site details in appendix).

The question as to whether Plymouth is becoming less suitable for the company is becomingmore evident. It appears that land for expansion is available and being adopted (Southyard),although not in Stonehouse, adequate testing areas are local (Plymouth Sound), logisticaltransport is kept to a minimum by constructing vessels in separate locations rather thantransporting all parts to one central location. The majority of involved companies appear to
be locally based. This would suggest that at least functionally if not nancially, that Plymouthremains a suitable location.
Now that a strong background storyline of present and past PY research has been complied,
it is necessary to move to the Observation Tool Stage to explore rst-hand controversiesoccurring and form reective relation to the Research Tool Stages.

The Observation Tool Stage
Searching for Connections
The Observation Stage will ignore the majority of the pre-research and focus instead onlooking at Princess Yachts from a different viewpoint in order to begin to identify how PrincessYachts is connected to Stonehouse. In order to do this, it is necessary to choose a relevantobservation point. In this case the point of observation will be at the closest geographicalproximity of Princess Yachts to the vicinity of Stonehouse.

The observation observed several main occurrences however would take note of any
additional unforeseen events. The study would note the time of day, the weather (in case
this has an inuence on behaviour), the observed events, whether the event involves anarrival or a departure from the site, and where the event occurred from or to.
(Full documentation of the study and results is included in the Appendix)
The study took place on 28/01/2014 and began at 08:38, terminating at 17:10. A short intervalfrom 15:10 to 15:50 was necessary for a lunch break a total observation time of 7 hours 52
minutes. The chosen timings were designed to t around the expected standard national9AM to 5PM working hours and the usual 1PM to 2PM lunch break. The study found that workappears to begin at 8AM as very few people arrived to the site around 9AM. If the studywere to be re-conducted the study would begin at 07:30 so as to observe morning arrivals.
The Image to the Left (28/01/2014)shows the red 2001 VW Lupo that wasused as the base for observationsparked in the above marked position.Though not the most covert vehicle -and parked in a place predominantlyleft empty, it did draw the curiosity andgaze of several Princess Yachts Staff, particularly those noted to arrive anddepart several times during the day, however I do not believe that it hadany affect upon any of the observedactivities.

The observation noted laden and un-laden trailer Lorries arriving and departing the site.As well as large cranes. Lang and Potter vehicles were the most prominent arrivals and
departures from the site. This reinforces previous Primary and Secondary Research.
Several delivery companies Royal Mail, UPS, DPD, Interlink Express, DHL, and Citylinkwere
all observed making deliveries/collections from Stonehouse, this suggest connections widerthan Plymouth.
Alimentation and catering companies including Oggy Oggy, Bites, Graddon Vending, Ivor
Dewdney(As seen at Lee Mill), and Granny Plumbs. Are all locally based and all transporttheir produce to the company that resulted in apparently very few people leaving the sitefor Lunch.
The majority of other vehicles specialise in the manufacturing processes and supply of partsand services to vessel construction.
Several of the people arriving and leaving the site via the car park were wearing life jackets
as the one observed at the Sutton Harbour Sales ofce. This suggests that some of themtravel to Sutton Harbour and potentially also Southyard as these two sites are the only siteswith access to the water where lifejackets would be a requirement.
At the end of the study at 17:10, those leaving the site down Union Street were followed
on foot to observe where they go and what they do after they have nished work. Peopleappeared to leave in groups no bigger than four people, however most usually individually.
There was little communication between those as they left. The majority used the NorthEntrance to the car park, others waited at the bus stop on Union Street.
By the time those leaving reached the Octagon roundabout on Union Street the majorityof the employees had dispersed. None were observed to visit any of the shops down Union
Street.
The observation noted an estimated 170+ staff left the premises circa 17:00.

5/24/2018 ANT Report
34/72
In order to identify the employee connection with the Stonehouse area (apart from thesmall catchment of two people observed to be living in the houses opposite the entrance)
it is necessary to study the methods of commute as previously drawn from the SecondaryResearch Tool Stage.
To study a vague catchment of whether the staff who drive to commute to work comefrom Devon or Cornwall. The simple observation would involve observing the cars in the
car-park at Princess Yachts and searching for the visual TamarTag(Tamar Crossings, 2014)boxes placed in the windscreens used by regular commuters to cross the Tamar Bridge to
Cornwall at a reduced price. Although this is not a completely reliable study as not all theemployees drive, not all with a TamarTagwill have them displayed clearly in their windows, some who commute will not have a Tag, and some who do not live there may have a Tag,also motorbikes are not required to pay tolls to cross the bridge and as such have no Tags
so will be ruled out of the ndings. However the study should still show a vague estimate asto proportions.
The Car Study was conducted on 28/01/2014 at 14:00. For the investigation, to reduce
unwanted attention whilst performing the survey in the private car-park, an outt similar tothat worn by Princess Yachts staff - a plain Navy Blue top, Black work-trousers, and Work-boots were donned.
The investigation found that it initially appeared that 86.3% of the cars potentiallytravelled from within Devon. (Full results in Appendix).
There were 241 cars in the car park and 23 motorbikes. It is unlikely that the people who drive live particularly locally and are unlikely to bearmuch individual connection to Stonehouse, particularly those who would appear to live
in Cornwall or further aeld. Also signicant to note, during the survey a Princess Yachts employee passed in thecar park and nodded an acknowledgement, presumably as he perceived the attire tobe that of a fellow Princess Yachts employee.
And so at the end of the Observation Tool Stage a clearer and more expanded understandingof the company and its ongoing and existing operations can be understood, and at this
point it is necessary to move to the fourth Tool, The Proling Tool Stage, in order to piecetogether relevant information to begin to form an explanation for the original question.

The Profling Tool Stage
Assembling the Findings
The PROFILING Tool Stage is where signicant information is identied from the Observationstage and the information is analysed identifying patterns, connections and trends to drawup the networks between the actors. At this stage the conclusions should be becomingmore apparent, however the toolkit can also be reassessed, and any new relevant ques-tions and missed areas of research can be revisited through the Observation stage.
Princess Yachts is identied as an international company with sales on every continent. TheProling Stage will aim to identify how despite the scale of the organisation the company isconnected to the small area of Plymouth Stonehouse from where it originated in 1965.
Proling will be summarised under the following three levels of connection which drawupon the earlier research and connect the networks between the Actors:
- Infrastructure Networks
- Business Networks
- Personnel/Social Networks
35
-
5/24/2018 ANT Report
36/72
Infrastructure Networks:
The Princess Yachts Infrastructure has developed around the geography of the company and
physical space requirements. Historically when the company was edging, it was limited toNewport Street and had a signicantly smaller workforce. However the current infrastructurehas sites spread around Plymouth and as far as 11 miles by road (Google Maps, 2014) across
to Lee Mill. These are connected through modern communications e.g. email, phone as well
as a eet of logistics vehicles. These vehicles when arriving and departing Newport Street useStonehouses Union Street as a means to get from one site to another.
Connections to Stonehouse are minimal via inter-site interaction. Stonehouse does not haveeven a fuel station where the vehicles could refuel.
Having practiced this method of logistics for some time, even larger transportation tasks suchas entire boats and hulls are fairly seamless and non-disruptive to Stonehouse throwing upvery few Social controversies that could suggest further connections and requirements fromthe small district of Plymouth. The only observed abnormality to standard transport use of the
roads is the trafc being halted at the entrance to Newport Street to allow large vehiclesto cross the road. This could be replaced by the introduction of trafc lights, however theroad network around the site does not appear to have been altered in any way to allow
for the large convoys potentially the Octagon and Stonehouse Bridge Roundabouts mayhave been altered to allow for the large vehicles. However a point of further research wouldbe to contact the Plymouth Planning Department to identify if there are any infrastructure
restrictions/changes on developments to the highways used by Princess Yachts to allowfuture continued use of the roads. (E.g. road width restrictions/regulations).
The staff of Princess Yachts use Private and Company vehicles to move between sites, the
company vehicles are supplied by Ryder based in Wiltshire. It is not known if some of the manylocal garages in Stonehouse may have repairs and servicing contracts for these vehicles this is a point which could be further explored with further research and could offer a pointof connection with Stonehouse.
Some of the staff were noted to leave the site by Bus, (presumably also arrive by bus), this islocated along Union Street and may provide an opportunity for brief visits to the convenience
store located on the North side of Union Street adjacent to the bus stops. However this would

require further enquiry/observation to conrm.
In Summary the Infrastructure of Princess Yachts in and around Stonehouse does not appear
to have any signicant impact or connection to the area. Apart from having sufciently widestreets for large transport vehicles, Stonehouse offers no obvious advantages to PrincessYachts and is seemingly a non-place.

Business Networks:
Princess Yachts has been observed as having contact/interaction with at least 33 additionalcompanies of which only 15 have sites in Plymouth and none of which have sites within thevicinity of Stonehouse. A point of further research could be to investigate these companies
individually to see if they have connections/networks in Stonehouse apart from PrincessYachts.
Catering business have a signicant effect on the social connection between Princess Yachtsand Stonehouse. By bringing food to site they remove the need or desire for staff to leavethe site to seek lunch provisions potentially from within Stonehouse which has a minimalnumber of locations available to supply lunches This could be further investigated as towhether the arrival of mobile catering companies has had an impact upon the success ofshops on Union Street. Less than 20 people appeared to leave the site between 1pm and
2pm (the estimated lunch hour where some people were seen to be leaving the site eatingpasties from the Oggy Oggypasty company). Some appeared to leave via the car park, potentially travelling home or to a location outside of Stonehouse for lunch, a few people
headed in the direction of Royal William Yard, however due to the time taken to walk thedistance on foot it is more likely they were walking to residences in that direction.
In Summary, the business connections formed around Princess Yachts presence in Stonehouse
do not appear to offer any benet to the area and show no notable signs of connection andinstead may potentially have a damaging effect on the area.

The below diagram shows seperatedand conjoined working environmentsthat depend upon vessel size.
Personnel/Social Networks:
According to Bob McDonald of ADG, the majority of labourer staff work in small specialisedgroups in an assembly line system and do not have many opportunities to socialise with otherworkers whilst they are divided by hulls of large vessels. This could explain why very few of the
staff arriving and leaving the premises during the Observation appeared to communicatewith each other beyond a minimal nod of acknowledgement and why when the employees
left at the end of the day either individually or in very small groups despite many staff leavingat the same time. No employees were observed to bid farewell to any other employees asthey left the site. Potentially this could suggest why the member of staff who acknowledgedmyself as if another member of staff during the Car Park Survey during the Observation ToolStage, it is possible that he assumed, partly due to the appropriate attire and the large
number of employees within Princess Yachts, that he assumed that I was an employee that
he was not surprised to nd that he did not know individually as this could be the norm withinthe company. This is a point which could be further investigated with more research intothe individual social behaviour between employees - a poor internal social structure can
have a signicant effect upon socialisation continuing post working hours - socialisation that
could take place or be accommodated within the local vicinity of Stonehouse connectingthe company more with the area. It would be an interesting point of further observation to
investigate whether any of the staff at the end of the working week have social gatherings, and if so, at which location?
Bob McDonald did note that the construction methods were changing for the larger vesselssuch as the 40M and they were built In-situe instead of in a production line. This involvesmultiple disciplines of staff working on the vessel simultaneously with the potential of furtherinteractions between them. This In-situe construction is currently only being adopted at the
new Southyard facility. It would be interesting to investigate Southyard by the same ANTmethodology to observe any controversies between the connections with Devonport andnote how the difference in working style may have an effect upon social connections withthe locality. Staff that are more sociable at work may continue social activities outside ofwork.
In Summary, the study suggests that working conditions and requirements in conjunction with
the scale of the organisation and vast numbers of employees may have a signicant effectupon social activities within the vicinity of Stonehouse.

Conclusions and Further Questions
Returning to the original question - How is Princess Yachts connected to Stonehouse?
As stated in the introduction, ANT cannot be reduced to a nal answer or catch-all theory(Cressman, 2009: 3) however provides a unique view into sociotechnical structure that may
not be apparent from using conventional research methods with xed methodologies ofstudy. An ANT study can allow existing Actors to recover the ability to make up their owntheories as to what the social is made from. In this case those who would gain most insight
from the ndings are the main Actor, Princess Yachts.
As a result of this ANT investigation into Princess Yachts and its connection to Stonehouse, the study has thrown up several points of interest to the Actors within the Princess YachtsNetwork.
The summary partly answers the initial answer however asks further questions to investigatethe reasoning behind it. The level of connection that Princess Yachts apparently has with itslocality of Stonehouse appears to be minimal.
The theory that reinforces this opinion centres upon the following points that would be of useto the Actors involved to help them inform their understanding of the Social connections of
Princess Yachts:
- Princess Yachts is now a large company where the Stonehouse site at Newport Street
represents only 1/6th of their infrastructure in the City of Plymouth.- The geographical spacing between the sites including Stonehouse is more of alogistical hindrance than an advantage. Potentially why Princess Yachts was apparentlyconsidering a move to Germany to reconcile all activities to one large site post the
award of the RGF by Plymouth City Council.- The business connections associated with Princess Yachts are all located themselvesoutside of the Stonehouse Area and appear to have no interactions themselves.
42
-
5/24/2018 ANT Report
43/72
- Opportunities for employees to socialise and connect with Stonehouse are reducedby several reasons.
o Employees do not spend time off site in Stonehouse at lunch time due to cateringbeing brought to the site from outside of Stonehouse.o The vast number of employees and lack of social interaction under workingconditions potentially reduces the number of social relationships within the
workplace which could be a reection of the behaviour or lack of - exhibited
amongst the employees outside the workplace.- Stonehouse as a district does not appear to have any facilities or services beyond abus stop that is used by some of the staff.
Critically reecting upon the Toolkit - it appears to have worked well being exible enoughto suit most situations and has delivered successful results, however upon reection, as ithappens, not all of the research was conducted as sequentially as the research and resultssuggest. Also far more information was uncovered regarding the company than was perhaps
necessary. However this is the nature of ANT, much research can lead to nothing directly, however all research builds a framework of reection to help inform and assess the social.
The following are a few of the key questions arisen from this study to steer further research:
- Has Princess Yachts outgrown Plymouth as a city?
- How is Stonehouse a social area if at all?
- How has Princess Yachts presence shaped the city through planning regulations andconsiderations in the area?
- Does working in a production line have a varied effect on social interaction ofemployees against in-situe construction?

From: Ben Pitcher (s) Date: Monday, 16 December 2013 15:16
To: Anne Marshall Subject: Princess Yachts International - South Yard Project
Dear ADG Architects,My name is Ben Pitcher, a Masters of Architecture Student from the University of Plymouth.
I am currently writing my dissertation on Princess Yachts, the infrastructure they require to runtheir business, and the interconnections between them. I hope to focus on how the latestaddition to their infrastructure - the South Yard Facility designed by yourselves - has been
integrated to work with the existing framework.
I was wondering if there was a possibility of a short meeting with one of your staff to take methrough the brief you had for the project and additional considerations you had to undertake.
I would also appreciate it - if possible - to get copies of some plans/elevations that I couldinclude in my essay; Any work of yours would be kept internal to the University, credited to
yourselves and fully condential.
I am required to write my draft over Christmas and I was hoping I would be able to come to
your Plymouth ofce sometime during this week so that I can make progress.
Please let me know if this would be possible to facilitate.
Kind Regards
Ben Pitcher
