FNAR 264ART, DESIGN, & DIGITAL CULTURE

THIS COURSE is an introduction to the fundamentals of visual perception, representation, and design. We will address the ways contemporary artists and designers create images; design with digital tools; and communicate, exchange, and express over a broad range of digital media. Emphasis will be placed on building an extended form of visual literacy by studying and producing images using a variety of analog and digital techniques; learning to organize and structure both two-dimensional and three-dimensional space; and working towards an individual style of idea-generation, design, presentation, and critique in support of your creative responses to digital culture.

In short, we will engage fully in the process of making art.

*The course is about learning to see and think like an artist/designer.

*The course focuses on design as both a mental discipline and a set of skills; as both a process and a focused practice.

*The course positions art and design as a state-of-mind: speculative, critical, and a form of inquiry.

2 You can save to the computer’s Desktop or Documents folder during class BUT make sure to transfer those files to other file storage at the end of class. They periodically wipe the computers. You have options: a. PennBOX - upenn.box.comb. Google Drive - through your Penn emailc. Buy an external hard drive or thumb Drive

1 In terms of supplies needed for “Prepare,” you are pretty much taken care of by the Fine Arts Department. You have 24-hour access to the Addams Building to use the computers. NOTE: many teachers will not let you “just work on my project” on an open computer when they are teaching in Addams 012.

The department does not provide you with an Adobe CC license for your personal computer, though. Sorry. The Education plan costs $19.99 per month. However, you are required to pay for the year. Check Adobe.com for specials and discounts at the beginning of the school year and around Black Friday.

There is a good art store at 3200 Chestnut called Plaza Artist Materials. There is a great art store at 1330 Chestnut called Blick Art Materials.

Project 4 is the only project that might have you buy materials.

3This can be a sketchbook purchased from an art supplies store or simply printer paper stapled together. You just need to have a thing with paper that you bring to class. In it, you will draw and think.

Where are the IT people located? • Nate – Room 102, behind the Addams PC Lab, and next to the 101 Architecture studio. • Ezra & Jino – Room 022, next to the elevator landing in the basement.

What is a design account? • Design accounts are specific to the Weitzman School of Design and are used to access resources provided by and for the school.

When are student accounts created? • The bulk of students’ accounts are created a couple of days before the start of the semester. • Over the course of the Drop/Add period, we receive registrar reports every few days, to update accounts.

What to do if a student does not have a Design account • Contact either Ezra or Nate to have the account created. • During normal business hours, you can direct the students to our offices to fix account issues. • After hours, please send a message to [email protected] to let us know that the account needs to be created.

How do we get help? • Email [email protected]. • The IT Website: https://www.design.upenn.edu/it/it-services. • Visit one of the IT offices during business hours.

What are the IT Business Hours? • Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. • This does not include official holidays observed by Penn.

Food & Drink in the Lab • Users are not permitted to eat in the labs. • Drinks are permitted, in non-spill, closed containers.

First Day

Step 1 - Students Must Set a New Password • Criteria: o It must be at least 12 characters long. o And must contain at least one UPPERCASE letter. o And one lowercase letter. o And at least one numeral. o It may contain other characters, such as punctuation symbols. o Cannot contain the user’s name and/or username. • What this applies to: o Only the user’s Design account.

Step 2 – Students will need an Adobe ID to use the Adobe Applications • Please see our documentation on Adobe IDs.

Step 3 – Let students know where to save files • While working on a file, it’s ok to save it on the desktop, or in the documents folder. • Everyone at Penn has a Penn+Box account, with unlimited storage. • Students should, before leaving, save files either in Penn+Box, on an external drive, or using another storage provider. • Please note that storage on workstations is not guaranteed – while it is rare, a workstation may be wiped or removed from service at any time for service, or to replace hardware.
