Welcome to HIS Story of the 20th Century High School Workbook
This workbook was created to go along with HIS Story of the 20th Century, a world history textbook that covers the 20th Century decade by decade. Created for high school students and advanced middle school students, this workbook has a timeline, comprehension questions, writing assignments, map work, research projects, hands-on activities, one living book a month to read, history labs, and fun ideas to celebrate the 20th Century. If you read the textbook and complete the workbook, you will have completed a one-credit high school world history course.
At the beginning of this workbook are timeline pages for each student to fill with timeline figures (included in this workbook) little by little throughout the year.
The workbook is also divided decade by decade with the same cover page as you find in HIS Story of the 20th Century.
At the beginning of every decade section, you will find a list of movies set in that section. The whole family should choose one to watch while students work on their timeline by cutting out the timeline figures and gluing them to the timeline pages. The dates for each timeline figure are in the textbook at the beginning of each decade section.
Read the pages in the textbook before beginning each chapter.
At the beginning of every chapter are questions that require the high school student to remember what they learned and explain in with several sentences or a couple of paragraphs. In addition, some sections have true and false questions.
Assorted assignments follow. Each chapter is different. Every decade has its own unique writing assignment and living books (see list below). Assorted assignments and history labs include: radio shows, splatter painting, sock hop, tie-dye, map work, family trees, creating an airline, designing an airport, interviewing someone from a communist country, exploring Route 66, playing sports, and designing your own amusement park.
Please listen to music from each decade. Consider dressing up and making popular dishes from the decade too—it just makes learning more fun!

We are kicking off our study of the twentieth century with the first decade.
You will watch a movie set in the beginning of the 20th century and complete your timeline first. Simply cut out the pictures and glue them onto the timeline where they belong. The dates are given in your textbook HIS Story of the 20th Century. I suggest working on your timeline while you watch the movie.
55 Days in Peking takes you to the Boxer Rebellion in China and Fiddler on the Roof explores Jewish persecution in Russia druing the same time period. Mary Poppins is set in England during the Edwardian Age, along with The Aristocats. I recommend choosing one of the first three, but you might want to watch The Aristocats with younger siblings.

You will also start reading Kim by Rudyard Kipling. Kim is set in Colonial India and gives you a great look at Indian culture and what Colonialism was like for the English, the Irish, and the Indians.
This is a super month! You will make some family trees for your own family, work with Queen Victoria’s family tree, prepare a Vaudeville act, make a splatter painting, listen to music from the era, analyze an essay, and do mapwork.
You may also want to prepare some meals to go along with this exciting time of history. Check out HIS Story of the 20th Century Cookbook.

History Lab: Art Appreciation & Splatter Painting
Look at 11x17” Prints of Art Movements through the Twentieth Century You can order prints online Or you can find pictures online and have them printed. Make a Splatter Painting Jackson Pollack Style This is a very messy lab so we did it outside on a picnic table covered with newspapers. If you do it inside, cover everything in the room that would be ruined by paint. You will need: Tempura Paint in Different Colors (you can use Acrylic too, but mix it with water) Big Chunky Paintbrushes Small Spoons Art Canvas in preferred size or Watercolor Paper in preferred size. Directions Place canvas, or paper on top of newspapers (or directly on the ground outside) Dip paintbrush in one color of paint and flick wrist to splatter paint on canvas Use small spoons to drop paint on canvas Continue splattering with as different colors as desired Try splattering close to canvas and from far away Try using circular motions or up/down motions Experiment with different types of wrist flicking Let paint dry Now you have a masterpiece. You can also try Splatter Painting by dropping paint through small screens.
