Anna: 0h no, one art cr i t ic told me recently that many of my picturescould be mistaken for photographs because they're so real ist ic.

Interviewer: I think that 's certainly true of the paint ings you do ofbeaches. I love those.

Anna: 0h yes. I 've painted lots of beaches with the surf beating downon them ...

Interviewer: But just recently you've done a new series of picturesusing dif ferent shades of yel low and orange.

Anna: I 'd say i t 's the way I portray the t ight. I t 's not something manyother art ists do.

Anna: Yes, they're big and I work on canvas - I frnd i t very hard to useany other surface, l ike board, though other art ists have been verysuccessfuI with i t .

Interviewer: I see. And what type of paint do you use?Anna: Wel[, ] 've tr ied paint ing in acryLic and water coLours, but I now

paint exclusively in oits - personaLty I think i t suits my style.Interviewer: Wett, other people obviously think so as wetl - your

mer ino wool , demand is fa l l ing - consumers of ten prefer synthet icc loth ing, l ike f leeces, which are cheaper than wool len jumpers andequal ly warm. But the biggest issue for a l l us farmers is c l imatechange - drought is causing major water shortages in farmingareas, so i t 's becoming harder to f lnd enough for our animals andc ro ps.

Interv iewer: Let 's ta lk about the market problems a bi t more. Areyou looking for new uses for your woo[?

Gina: Wel l yes. I t is very versat i le and has been put to so many usesover the centur ies. 0f course carpet manufacture st i [ [ absorbs ahigh percentage of our product as i t a lways has, and now we'retooking for other domest ic uses. The most promising seems to be

the idea of using i t in bui ldings as a form of insutat ion. Companiesdeveloping i t have found i t very effect ive. And there's atso interestin eco-clothing, you know, clothing made from al[ naturat products,and produced organical ly. But i t 's a special ised market and mayturn out to be uneconomic in the end... .

Interviewer: 5o why are you over here in the UK at the moment? Areyou looking for solut ions to your business probtems?

Gina: Wet[, yes. I 'm working in co-operation with ten other [argefarms to see i f we coutd develop an alternative energy systemproducing enough etectr ici ty to sel[ as wetl as meeting our ownneeds. Clearly hydro-electr ici ty isn't for us, and, er, t idaI poweris out, so I 've been looking into ideas for harnessing wind power,using [arge turbines. Bri tain has a lot ofexpert ise in that area, sothat 's why i 'm here. 0f course, we have potential for solar power,but I don't think we could produce a surplus with that.

Interviewer: That 's interesting. What made you consider theseoptions?

Gina: Wel[, i f the predict ions about global warming are correct,farmers in Austral ia wil l have to diversify, and look for othersources of income. That 's my reason for looking into wind power.0f course, since then I 've begun to real ise that being setf-suff icientand not having to rely entirely on other power sources is attract iveand I 'm start ing to think in a greener way.

Interviewer: I see. And what do you feel about the advice you'vebeen given?

Gina: Welt, i t 's given me a lotof food forthoughtand, er, taught methe advantages of a more ecological ly aware approach to l i fe andwork. And now that I have the information I 've worked out that theinvestment invotved is manageable. We should be able to scaledown on the amount of animals we rajse and st i t l make a l iving.

Interviewer: Great, so how would you sum up your feetings aboutyour proiect?

Gina: Wetl to my del ight our basic ptans are viable and we can presson very optimist ical ly, without making any major alterat ions. Andthe costs involved do seem to be lower than we'd feared...
