It gives me great joy to report that, thanks toTammy Beshlin, our Tournament Director, ourannual golf tournament was a smashing success.
Tammy has run this tournament now for five yearsand she has outdone herself every year. As I’ve saidmany times, we are blessed to have this very capablelady on our team; there is no one better.
The planning, marketing, fund raising, andpreparation for an event of this scope entails manyhours of arduous work over a 3-month period. Thelion’s share of this responsibility rests on theshoulders of the Tournament Director. Tammyhandled this with genuine enthusiasm, extraordinaryenergy, and incomparable managerial acumen.
The execution phase of the event (tournamentday), on the other hand, involves many moving parts, and the requisite number of minions to keep them allsynchronized. Under Tammy’s direction, hercommittee of volunteers did yeomen’s work instaging a first-class golf tournament. Special kudosto the following: Tim Atkinson, George Blanc, SteveByrnes, Maria Chavez, Maureen Dadek, StanDodson, Dennis Franken, Bob and Nancy Garman,Don Gersh, Ralph Hinrichs, Carol Ivey, Art andArgie Rodriguez, Marty Williams; and, the Meinhardtfamily consisting of: Mary, Katrina, Lise, Erika, Carl& Sharon, Hans & Susan, Alexis Taylor, andFranklyn Parker.
Despite catastrophic weather all around us, wewere blessed with beautiful weather; adding to thatwas a playing field of 89 enthusiastic golfers, many ofthem active duty soldiers; and, great camaraderie. Iwas pleased to see some of our non-golfing memberscome out to join us for dinner and a bit of socializingon a wonderful Saturday afternoon.
Our active duty soldiers had a great time andwere most appreciative. The following email Ireceived from SP4 Daniel L. Kruszewski of the2BCT, 82d Abn Div, is illustrative of the verbalfeedback we received from many other soldiers:
“Sir, I want to personally thank you for the greatevent! Everything was great, the people, golf, teamwork, beer and food, it was fantastic! I reallyappreciated that you're doing all of this for Soldiers!I had a lot of fun and I hope you did as well. Onceagain I am very appreciated (sic) of what you'redoing! Thank You Very Much Sir. Dan Kruszewski”
Of course, none of this would have been possiblewithout the generosity and support of our chaptermembers, and our commercial sponsors and donors. The number of chapter members who participated inone form or another this year also set a record: 35%vs our previous high of 28%. Why 65% elected topass on this remains an enigma.
Our next event and last one for the year, is ourannual membership meeting and dinner on 17November 2017 to be held in the Iron MikeConference Center, Fort Bragg. Because our Chapterwill be hosting the North Carolina Council ofChapters quarterly meeting here at Fort Bragg on the18th of November, the President of the NC Counciland his officers, plus the presidents of all NorthCarolina Chapters of MOAA and their spouses, willbe joining us for dinner the evening of the 17th.
The featured speaker for the evening will be MGJames E. Kraft, Jr., Deputy Commander, UnitedStates Army Special Operations Command; the 82nd
Airborne Division “All American Chorus” willprovide the entertainment.
Because of the significance of the event, we wantto put our best foot forward, showcase Fort Bragg“Home of the Airborne and Special OperationsForces,” and extend the warmest Cape Fear Chapterhospitality to our out-of-town guests. I ask all of youto mark your calendars now, and plan to attend; thiswill be a very special evening, we expect about 150attendees.
