ANNUAL REPORT 2011-12

Reviewing 2011-12 Strategic Plan - Planned Strategies

Actions & Tactics Our results

Coaching: - Guarantee high caliber programs

Self assess using the Best Practices Tool/Guarantee all coaches meet training requirements SOBC - North Shore hosted an NCCP Part A coaching course. All head coaches are fully certified. Sixteen volunteers took sport specific courses, making them eligible to coach at the National level.

- Improve communication with volunteers Create a volunteer coordination committee/Introduce volunteer orientation nights/Create an Operational Guidelines Manual

We have added to our volunteer committee and are still seeking members. Our first volunteer orientation night was attempted but due to lack of response was not held. A clearly defined volunteer recruitment, welcome and placement process was established. The Operational Guidelines Manual is still under construction.

Sport Development: - Offer Sport Start programs

Implement Sport Start Basketball and Sport Start Swimming We not only introduced Sport Start Basketball and Sport Start Swimming but also Sport Start Soccer. These programs were very well received and additional sessions requested.

- Provide new opportunities Utilize newly appointed Athlete Development Coordinators to implement new development opportunities to SOBC – North Shore athletes

The Athlete Development Coordinators have done an amazing job in their first year and are in the process of implementing many projects to help our athletes develop. They proved instrumental in acquiring extracurricular speed training sessions for athletics athletes and, as a result of their dedication, we will be introducing an Athletes’ Council next year.

Human Resources: - Concentrate on community outreach and public awareness

Promote SOBC – North Shore in an attempt to reach all intellectually disabled North Shore residents/Improve communication between SOBC – North Shore, sponsors and community partners

A new website was created. Facebook is now utilized regularly. Photo galleries are created/updated within 24 hours of an event. Photo calendars were presented to all friends and sponsors. Athlete Registration, Volunteering and Sponsorship pamphlets were created and distributed throughout the North Shore.

- Increase the number of athletes served by SOBC – North Shore Reintroduce a newsletter/Raise the number of athletes ages 2-18/Offer Sport Start programs

Newsletters were distributed to the membership, to sponsors and friends and to community members. We have more youth athletes than ever before. We offered 3 new Sport Start programs this year.

- Increase health of our athletes Introduce the LTAD model/Utilize newly appointed Athlete Development Coordinators to promote health and fitness

Many of our athletes have reached individual goals, while also increasing their health and fitness knowledge. - Listen and act on athlete requests

Add games to registration BBQ/Introduce 2 new dances Games were introduced to the registration BBQ and 2 new dances were introduced, the Fall Ball and the Summer Splash. We now have 6 dances per year.

Financial Viability: - Increase funding/Improve record keeping

Maintain our annual core fundraising activities (Walkathon and Grants)/Initiate new fundraising events/Approach individual sponsors for fundraising/Create a better filing system/Create a sponsorship spreadsheet

Grants received from the three municipalities and the BC Gaming Branch were higher than last year. We launched our photo calendar fundraiser this year. While it was not a significant source of revenues this year, it was well received. There were a number of lessons learned in the process that can be applied next year to improve our revenues. Due to a change in personnel on the Executive, this goal was delayed somewhat. Our new Fundraising Coordinator has been focusing, with some help from the Provincial office, on creative strategies for approaching sponsors. All financial records were sorted through and filed by year. Old records no longer required by regulation were shredded. Forms for expense claims, budgeting, and events summaries were developed and made available for completion online. A sponsorship spreadsheet was created and will be updated as necessary.

Head Basketball Coach, Zak Klein received the 2011 Grassroots Coach Award. Four new sports were introduced this year and each was very

well received: Bocce, Sport Start Basketball, Sport Start Soccer and Sport Start Swimming. SOBC - North Shore hosted the Twenty-third Annual 5 Pin Bowling Tournament.

The Annual STAPLES Give A Toonie. Share A Dream. Campaign will now take place in May. This year we participated in this campaign twice, first in November 2011 and May 2012. To commemorate the 2011 campaign, SOBC – North Shore Fundraising Coordinator, Chris Little, presented STAPLES General Manager, Jasen Nyrose and Services Supervisor Claire Gayton with a plaque in appreciation of their outstanding fundraising efforts. Store #56 raised the most funds nationally. SOBC – North Shore again took first place for the most hours volunteered! We are still awaiting the results of 2012 campaign. SOBC – North Shore was able to man hours for a Vancouver store as well. SOBC - North Shore hosted the Second Annual March Madness Basketball Tournament, this year’s Regional Qualifier. 21 teams attended this two-day event. The following athletes won individual awards in their divisions: Nick Kellof and Pierce Burns – Best Offensive Players; Joshua Moon and Kristina Tammark – Best Defensive Players. Joshua Moon also received a Shooting Star award. Dene Rosang and Lindsay Hall placed in all four skills events in which they competed. We hosted the 10 Pin Regional Qualifier. It was an extremely close competition. We

earned trophies for both second (missing first by only one point) and third place teams and male high single. SOBC – North Shore also hosted the 5 Pin Regional Qualifier and earned 33 of the 34 trophies at this competition. Local Coordinator, Kelly Klein, was awarded the BC Community Achievement Award, “recognizing and celebrating the spirit, imagination, dedication and contribution of British Columbians to their communities. Kelly was recognized in a formal presentation at Government House in Victoria on April 25th, where she received a certificate and a

medallion designed by B.C. artist Robert Davidson. Continued on page 5…
