Message fromUNITED WAY BOARD

Darren Lole United Way of South Eastern Alberta Board Chair

2018 was an eventful year for the United Way of South Eastern Alberta. With the ever changing economy, the charitable sector becomes more reliant on the funding models available in order to sustain the important programming, needed by the communities in Southern Alberta. I am happy to report that our many dedicated donors and volunteers continued to step up, through special events, or workplace campaigns, to ensure that the United Way met all its self-made goals for the year. This has allowed us to continue to provide program funding and to remain the largest non-government funder of social programming in the region, while maintaining a well below cost of operations.

On behalf of the board of directors, I wish to thank our dedicated staff, our generous donors, our tireless volunteers and our many community partners. Together we ensure that “change starts here”. Darren Lole

1913-2018 ETHEL CURRIEFounder of local United Way South Eastern Alberta

Ethel who had enough life in her to fill 105 years, passed away July 2018. She founded the United Way of Southeastern Alberta 60 years ago, and volunteered with us up until a few years ago. Ethel was a mentor to all of the volunteers and staff of the United Way of Southeastern Alberta. Ethel was awarded The Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal, which honours significant contributions and achievements by Canadians. This prestigious award was given to Ethel for her amazing work serving her community including her volunteer efforts with the Canadian Red Cross for more than 60 years. Ethel’s work dates back to the Second World War where she sewed for soldiers, crocheted quilts for newborns and knitted mittens with the nuns. THANK YOU ETHEL FOR ALL THAT YOU HAVE DONE!
