Activity  1:  SPIE  Student  Leadership  Workshop  

San  Diego,  CA,  Week  of  August  20,  2012  

Yunshan  Wang  and  William  O’brien  attended  the  SPIE  Student  Leadership  Workshop  as  preventatives  from  our  chapter.  The  leadership  workshop  was  very  informative  and  benefited  both  officers  in  their  personal  career  goals,  but  more  importantly  has  inspired  more  outreach  and  event  ideas  for  our  chapter.  

Yunshan  Wang  also  presented  her  research  poster  at  SPIE  optics  &  photonics  conference  where  she  exchanged  ideas  with  interested  researchers  from  all  over  the  world.

Activity  2:  SPIE  Workshop    “Finding  and  Funding  Interns”  

Date:  Feb.  25th,  2013  

Ann  Moran,  the  program  director  of  graduate  career  services  in  graduate  school,  gave  a  talk  on  internship  search  for  PhD  and  Master  level  students.  Information  including  where  to  look  for  internships,  application  materials  and  interviewing  tips  were  discussed.  Around  50  students  attended  this  event.

Activity  3:  Officer  election  BBQ  party  

Date:  Dec.  8th,  2012  

Members  of  the  chapter  were  invited  to  an  informal  BBQ  at  the  Secretary's  home,  in  which  steak,   lamb,  marinated  chicken  and  vegetarian  alternatives  were  grilled  and  served.  The  agenda  was   to  decide  new  officers   for   the  next  year,   and  also   to  hear  from  members  what  kind  of  activities  they  would  like  to  see  happen  in  the  next  year  (such  as  invited  speakers,  etc.).  In  total,  we  spent  about  $150  and  had  a  turnout  of  about  a  dozen  people  joining  the  activity.

Activity  4:  Photography  workshop  

Date:  Jan.24th,  2013  

Muhammad  Atyab  Imtaar,  gave  a  workshop  titled  ‘Into  Photography’  to  students  at  Notre  Dame,  mainly  SPIE  members  on  Jan.  24th,  2013.  Atyab  is  a  visiting  researcher  from  Technical  University  of  Munich,  Germany,  and  also  an  amateur  photographer  and  a  member  of  a  Photography  Club  in  Munich.  In  the  workshop,  he  talked  about  what  you  should  consider  when  purchasing  a  camera  and  taking  a  photo,  from  basic  photography  knowledge  like  mirror  box,  focal  length,  etc.  to  advanced  techniques.    

The  workshop  attracted  15  students  from  department  of  Electrical  Engineering,  Chemical  and  Biomolecular  Engineering,  Chemistry  and  Physics.    The  audiences  were  very  interested  in  the  presentation  and  asked  many  questions  during  the  workshop.  We  provided  pizza,  which  cost  about  200  dollars  and  the  event,  was  co-­‐sponsored  by  Graduate  Student  Union  (covered  125  dollars).

Activity  5:  Welcome  back  meeting  

Date:  Feb.6th,  2013  

We   held   ‘Welcome   back   meeting’   on   Feb.   6th,   2013,   which   is   open   to   current  members  and  any   students  who  are   interested   in   joining  SPIE   student   chapter.   In  the  meeting,   our   advisor   Prof.   Jena   shared   his   passion   in   optics   research   and   his  prediction   in   future  directions  of  optoelectronic  devices.  His  short   talk   left  a  great  impact  on  us  students.    

The   president,   Yunshan,   then   introduced   the   function   of   SPIE,   opportunities   as   a  member   including   scholarship,   travel   grant,   etc.   Formal   president,   Peng   Li   talked  about   how   he   improved   his   communication   skills,   management   skills   through  operating  the  chapter  for  last  year.  Vice  president,  Bill  shared  his  experience  as  an  officer,  mostly  on  the  trip  to  SPIE  leadership  workshop.  Sectary,  Tahsin  talked  about  why   he   decided   to   join   SPIE   and   optics   research   in   his   group.   Treasure,   Victor  described  our  future  outreach  event  and  got  some  feedback  from  the  audiences.    

We  spent  150  dollars  on  pizza.

Activity  6:  Prof.  Gangopadhyay’s  talk  

Date:  Feb.12th,  2013  

Prof.   Shubhra  Gangopadhyay   gave   a   talk   ‘Inexpensive   Optics   for  Plasmonic/Photonic   Enhancements’   to   SPIE   members   on   Feb   12,   2013.   She   is  a  LaPierre   Endowed   Chair   Professor   of  Electrical   and   Computer   Engineering   in  University   of   Missouri.   Her   areas   of   expertise   include   metal  nanoparticle   based  memory  devices,  nanostructured  dielectric   films   for  nanoelectronics,   solar   cell   and  sensor   applications,   chemical   and   biological   sensors   using   nanotechnology  platforms,  and  nanoenergetics  for  defense  and  biological  applications.  

Dr.   Gangopadhyay   was   visiting   Department   of   Chemical   and   Biomolecular  Engineering,  and  she  generously  agreed  to  speak  to  SPIE  students,  as  she  is  always  passionate   in  educating  future  researchers.  Students  enjoyed  her  presentation  and  asked  many  interesting  questions.

Inexpensive Optics for Plasmonic/Photonic Enhancements Most!cancer!drug!discovery,!protein!folding,!DNA!sequencing!have!one!common!framework,!a!methodology!to!excite!flourophores!and!measure!the!emission.!However,!such!studies!are!limited!in!resoluAon!of!fluorescence!through!the!diffracAon!limit!(DL),!and!the!holy!grail!of!opAcs!is!to!devise!a!sensiAve,!cheap,!robust!method!to!beat!the!DL.!In!this!talk!today,!I!will!try!to!take!you!on!a!short!journey!where!I!will!not!only!show!you!a!cost!effecAve!soI!lithography!technique!to!make!plasmonic/photonic!structures!that!beat!the!DL,!but!also,!applicaAons!to!biological!systems.!The!structures!are!made!using!a!simple!PDMS!stamping!of!graAng!structure!from!commercially!produced!HDNDVDs,!with!a!metallic!cap!to!efficiently!couple!light!on!the!surface!by!surface!plasmon!resonance!(SPR)!or!a!dielectric!cap!for!photonic!crystals.!The!stamping!process!introduces!20N60!nm!wide!nanoNgaps,!due!to!shear!forces!on!PDMS!stamp.!Though!graAngs!only!show!enhancements!in!~!10!to!100,!the!nanoNgaps!concentrate!light!with!increased!efficiency!and!show!plasmonic!enhancements!of!118!Ames!and!photonic!enhancements!of!1000!Ames!with!respect!to!glass!!!These!nanoNgaps!on!the!silver!graAngs!are!ideally!suited!to!study!a!plethora!of!single!molecule!phenomenon!from!Ame!resoluAon!studies,!moleculeNmetal!interacAons,!Förster!resonance!pair!DNA’s,!due!to!increased!signal!to!noise!raAo!and!high!enhancement!factors!using!a!simple!epiNflouresence!microscope.!!!!Dr.$Shubhra$Gangopadhyay$joined!the!University!of!MissouriNColumbia!(MU)!in!2003!as!the!LaPierre!Endowed!Chair!Professor!of!Electrical!and!Computer!Engineering!to!enhance!interdisciplinary!research!in!the!areas!of!microelectronics/nanoelectronics,!material!science!and!nanotechnology.!Dr.!Gangopadhyay!is!the!Director!of!the!InternaAonal!Center!for!Nano/Micro!Systems!and!Nanotechnology.!Her!areas!of!experAse!include!metal!nanoparAcle!based!memory!devices,!nanostructured!dielectric!films!for!nanoelectronics,!solar!cell!and!sensor!applicaAons,!chemical!and!biological!sensors!using!nanotechnology!plaborms,!and!nanoenergeAcs!for!defense!and!biological!applicaAons.!!!
