Speers of Champaign County and is

Profile of an Amateur Artist:
Marilyn Riley
Tucked away in the rolling hills be-
tween the Illinois and Mississippi
rivers, Pittsfield serves as the county
seat as well as the business and social
center of Pike County, Illinois. It is a
small, attractive town not unlike hun-dreds of other rural communitiesthroughout the Midwest. This means,
in part, that it has a court house onthe city square, a feature pleasantly
familiar to the residents and visitors
in this part of the country. The phys-
ical layout of the Pittsfield square is
made unique, however, by the red
dome on the court house and the
sculptured hog beneath the trees onthe southeast corner of the block.
The unusual hog clearly suggests that
Pike County is considered by its resi-
dents to be the pork capitol of the
world. Beyond that, the sculpture
indicates that the people are inter-
ested in cultural affairs as well as in
practical matters. They are proudof their public library, their weeklynewspaper, the theatre guild, the
community college, the Twin Rivers
Art League, and the other cultural
entities that contribute so much to
the good life in that part of the state.
Marilyn Riley and her husband,Carl, raise corn, beans and livestock
on their picturesque farm four miles
south of Pittsfield. Mrs. Riley likes the
town, and she has been a member of
its Art League for at least five years.
She recently served as its president.
Other members, including HelenJohnson, Marie Miles, Georgia Swett,
Sharon Hawkins, Beverly Woods, Katy
Niebur, Ruth Blalock, Kay Miller, andUldeen Gerard have been active in
the group for many years, and their
delightful paintings have appearedin numerous Town and Country ex-
hibitions, from local shows in Pitts-
field to the state exhibition in Urbana.
The 25 members of the organization
gather once a week during the winter
to paint and receive instruction. Their
meetings are held in rented space at
the Pittsfield Community Center, a
large white house not far from the
city square.
Like her colleagues, Marilyn Riley
is willing to experiment with subjects,
materials and techniques that are dif-
ferent from those usually employedby nonprofessionals. The painting
displayed here, for example, was be-
gun by sanding the smooth side of
an 18 by 24-inch piece of Masoniteand painting it with three coats of
prepared gesso. The gesso formed a
painting surface known as a ground. After sanding the ground with fine
sandpaper, Mrs. Riley transferred a
pencil sketch of her subject to the
Masonite panel. She then painted the
panel with burnt umber diluted with
turpentine and wiped the surface
with a rag to produce an even toneof transparent burnt umber. Thetreated panel was dry enough to
work on in a matter of minutes.
Colored painting surfaces or toned
grounds are not new, but, unfortu-
nately, they are rarely employed by
nonprofessionals. A colored groundcan be especially helpful to begin-
ning painters because it eliminates
the strong and visually troublesomecontrasts that immediately developwhen paint is applied to a white sur-
face. It also assists in producing visual
unity if it is allowed to show in sev-
eral parts of the finished painting.
And it helps in establishing light anddark (or value) relationships by acting
as a middle value and as a key in
determining the lightness or darkness
of highlights, shades and shadows.
Corot, the famous French landscape
painter of the 19th century, believed
the early establishment of light anddark relationships to be one of the
most important tasks in painting. It
helps to determine the subtlety or
power of a visual image; it affects
composition, including balance; andit contributes to decisions aboutcolor.
Riley, Marilyn. Evening at Home. 18 by 24 inches. 1980. Courtesy of the artist.
To create highlights and shadedareas on a toned ground, the artist
gently removes some of the color by
sanding lightly with fine sandpaperor by wiping with a rag moistenedwith turpentine. Mrs. Riley used a rag
to produce different degrees of light-
ness in the hand, the socks and other
elements of her picture. She thenproceeded to add darker values by
painting with thick and thin coats of
burnt umber. The result was a mono-chromatic painting or an image in
one color. When the paint was dry,
Mrs. Riley added a transparent blue
glaze (ultramarine blue and a com-mercial medium) to the blue jeans
and a little burnt orange to the chair
to produce a finished painting that is
limited in color and pleasantly subtle.
The work also has a strong "paint-
erly" quality, because it looks like a
painting rather than an attempt to
fool the observer into believing that
a real man is captured within the
frame. This quality is achieved by al-
lowing the spontaneous brush strokes
to show as well as the grid that wasused to enlarge and transfer the
image of the seated figure from a
small pencil sketch to the larger
Masonite panel. The subject matter,
moreover, is refreshingly different.
The work shows that a human figure
need not be beautifully dressed andsmiling to make a nice subjea, and it
need not be painted from the waist
up, in the center of the canvas, facing
the observer.
Clearly, Marilyn Riley has created
something different from the worksnormally encountered in Town andCountry art shows. Without attempt-
ing to do so, Mrs. Riley has created a
painting that has numerous charac-
teristics in common with the worksof Honore Daumier, the Frenchmaster whose paintings and prints
became famous as artistic social com-mentary during the revolutionary
period of the 19th century. Even a
penciled grid such as the one Mrs.
Riley forgot to erase in her haste to
tone the ground can be seen in
Daumier's highly praised painting
The Third-Class Carriage. That samemasterpiece also was painted with
spontaneous brush strokes of burntumber and one other color, and the
subjects are ordinary people as they
appear in everyday life.
Obviously, the works by HonoreDaumier and Marilyn Riley could
Daumier, Honore (1808-1879). The Third Class Carriage (Wagon de 3S class), lAVi by 35V2 inches.

have included more colors. But, to
assume, as we sometimes do, that
paintings have to be highly colorful is
to ignore the history of art. Daumierwas not the only great artist to makepaintings with a limited palette. Hun-dreds have done so. In fact, a numberof artists painted occasionally with
only one color. Is the use of the
limited palette a gimmick, or is it a
useful and legitimate tool? The truth
is that there are genuine advantages
to painting with a small number of
colors, especially for a beginningpainter. A limited palette decreases
the number of color relationships
that must be successfully managed in
composing a picture. It aids in the
production of harmonious colors
because the intermixing that is likely
to occur will produce hues that havekinship to each other. And it reduces
the range of color contrasts while
increasing the chance that a domi-nant and unifying tonality will devel-
op within the painting.
Also contributing to the excellence
of Mrs. Riley's work is the develop-ment of the painting from a sketch
of her son. She did not copy anotherartists' picture, and she did not rely
upon a photograph. When a painter
copies another person's work, he or
she turns into a human reproductive
machine—and nothing more. Such a
"machine" depends upon the mate-rial fed into it. It does not think or
feel, and it does not inject any of it-
self into the finished product. Photo-graphs, on the other hand, can behelpful references, and they are fre-
quently used by professionals. But
they also can become crutches with-
out which the artist is unable to work,
and they can be terribly limiting,
especially to the inexperienced paint-
er. They can be restrictive simply be-
cause it is difficult for the artist to
experiment by deviating from the
form and color captured by the
camera. Consequently, it might bemore liberating to use black andwhite photographs as references if
one chooses to use them at all.
Marilyn Riley has been painting,
off and on, for 20 years. When asked
why she continued to paint, she says
that it is something she simply "has
to do." She enjoys participation in
the Twin Rivers Art League because"it is good to be with people wholike the same things, and it is a pleas-
ant social experience." These are
feelings that people in the arts under-
stand and appreciate.
