Dear Scouting Friend,

In 2013 our nation proudly marked the 50th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King,Jr.’s immortal “I have a dream” speech, in which he taught us that the true measure ofany person is found in the content of their character. And character-building is whatScouting is all about.

Character, it is said, is doing what is right when no one is looking. It is in that spiritthat the Eagle Scouts of the Greater Cleveland Council collectively performed morethan 31,000 hours of service to our community during 2013.

Abraham Lincoln said, “The shadow is what we think it is and the tree is the realthing.” The 178 young men in the council who earned their Eagle Scout Award in 2013have thus far, proven to be the real thing, and more importantly, have pledged to be that throughout their lifetime.

Another American icon put it this way: “Character, in the long run, is the decisive factor in the life of an individual and of nations alike,” according to U.S. President andChief Scout Citizen Teddy Roosevelt. The more than 15,000 youth served by Scoutingthroughout Cuyahoga and Northern Summit Counties this past year, are prepared tohave a positive impact on the character of their community and nation.

2013 was an outstanding year for Scouting locally, even though Scouting nationallycoped with many challenges, including the movement-wide discussion regarding theBSA’s membership standards. Even in the face of the national challenges, the GreaterCleveland Council continued its record of success – notably in camping programs, in operating with a budget surplus, and most importantly, achieving growth in membersserved.

It is with pride and optimism that we share with you the 2013 Greater ClevelandCouncil Annual Report. It’s all about character!

Yours in Scouting,

As an 85-year veteran of Scouting, Thomas J. Gray witnessed the growth and evolution through a lifetime of commitment to, participation in and leadership of the Scoutingprogram. He dedicated his life to service through the BoyScouts of America. Tom began his life long journey with theBoy Scouts on his 12th birthday, obtaining the rank of Eagle(with four Palms) in 1930 while a member of Troop 52 in

Lakewood, Ohio. Tom never missed a season at camp. At the age of 96, Tom still enjoyedcamping with the Scouts – supporting and mentoring the boys and their leaders, doinghis chores, and enjoying the camp experience. Scouting was a family affair for the Grayfamily. Tom’s sons, Tom Jr. and Jon, achieved the rank of Eagle from Troop 309 in PepperPike, Ohio. Tom was even awarded several badges by the Girl Scouts of the USA after assisting his granddaughters in Scouting.

Tom served in nearly every role possible for Scouting volunteers and was the recipientof many honors for his service and dedication to the Scouts, including the District Awardof Merit, National Scoutmaster Award, National Distinguished Commissioner Award,Order of the Arrow Vigil member and the Silver Beaver Award. Forever the instructor, Tomserved on National Camp School Staff, Jamboree Staff and Beaumont Summer Campstaff. He earned a Doctor of Commissioner Science from the University of Scouting wherehe served on the regional faculty for decades. His extraordinary legacy was honored withthe naming of “Greater Cleveland Council Thomas J. Gray Eagle Scout Class of 2010.”

Tom’s servant leadership, learned in Scouting, taught others how to pay-it-forward by example and to do so generously and generationally.

~Thank you Tom~

Immediate Past BSA President Visits Cleveland

Christopher Connor, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Sherwin-Williams served as host for the CEOBreakfast featuring Rex Tillerson,Chairman and Chief Executive Officer,Exxon Mobil Corporation. Mr. Tillersonis the immediate past President of BoyScout of America and a DistinguishedEagle Scout. For 36 community leadersgathered in June, it was a unique opportunity to hear an inspirationaland informative message on the valueof Scouting to corporate America fromone of the Scouting’s finest speakers.

Highlights Include:• On instilling values: Every week ayouth spends in Scouting is anotheropportunity for him to have FUN,to learn, and to recite the Scout Oathand Law. The weekly recital of theScout Oath and Law begins theprocess whereby they are etched onthe child’s heart. At his first campfire, they are etched a bit deeper, foreverproviding a moral compass.

• On volunteerism:We do this workeven though we are too busy because we are “placed” here to do it. That speaks to God’s plan for each of us.

• On leadership: Scouting has alwaysbeen known to create great leaders. But Scouting provides numerous opportunities to be a great follower, allowing ample opportunity to recog-nize and emulate good leadership.

• A final takeaway from Rex was hiscomment something to the effect …“From the founding of Scouting to the present day, it is, was, and always will be about the youth …and the rest is noise.” Wow!
