Annual Report
Collaborating at Home
and Abroad
Dear IAIABC Members,
Last year was an eventful one for the IAIABC, one in which the Association collaborated both at home in the US and around the world as we worked toward furthering our mission to find solutions to reduce harm and aid recovery from occupational injuries and illnesses. This mission is universal; transcending organization, state or province, and country.
The IAIABC has a deep commitment to the exchange of ideas and information. A global focus has broadened and enriched these connections. I recently returned from Bali, Indonesia, where I participated in the International Seminar on Expanding Social Security Coverage in the Disruptive Economy. The topics and concepts discussed at the meeting were thought-provoking and encouraged sharing among a global community.
Solutions exist in different forms and places. As our world changes at an ever increasing rate, it is more important than ever to look beyond. In doing this, we can harness the talents and insights from experts around the world. In fact, this annual report was written by a staff member teleworking in Tennessee and designed by a freelancer in Portugal. How’s that for work in this changing world?
Throughout 2018, we look forward to continuing these collaborations, learning from each other, and finding new ways to overcome the challenges impacting our industry.
Sincerely,
Matt CareyPresident, IAIABC Chief Administrator, Rhode Island Division of Workers’ Compensation

EDUCATION AND RESOURCESFollowing are some of the education and resource highlights from 2017. To learn about other IAIABC offerings, visit www.iaiabc.org.
EDUCATIONAL CONFERENCES: 103RD CONVENTION AND THE FORUM
The IAIABC visited Portland, Oregon for its 103rd Convention and Kansas City, Missouri for The Forum 2017. The IAIABC continues its focus on top-notch educational programming. Repeat attendees say the main reasons they continue to attend are that the programming addresses current issues they are interested in, and they can learn about emerging industry challenges.
EDI CLAIMS RELEASE 3.1
In August 2017, the IAIABC published its newest Standard, EDI Claims Release 3.1. The EDI Claims and Systems Committees worked tirelessly for 2 years to develop the new Standard, and a number of states will be moving forward with adoption in 2018 and 2019.
FOUNDATIONS OF WORKERS’ COMPENSATION ADMINISTRATION PROGRAM
The IAIABC Foundations Program completed its third year in 2017. The Foundations Program was designed to promote understanding of workers’ compensation systems around the world, successfully transfer institutional knowledge to new leaders, and promote strong leadership skills. Last year, twenty jurisdictional agency staff earned certificates for completing all coursework.
EDI TRAINING SUBSCRIPTION
The IAIABC started its EDI Training Subscription in 2017, offering subscribing organizations access to education on the EDI Standards. Modules included introductory information on the new EDI Claims Release 3.1, Claims 3.0, Proof of Coverage 3.0, Electronic Medical Billing, and Medical State Reporting. Look for additional modules and webinars on XML, Proof of Coverage, and Claims 3.1 in 2018.

SPECIAL ACTIVITIES
MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING WITH THE INTERNATIONAL SOCIAL SECURITY ASSOCIATION
In November 2017, the IAIABC and the International Social Security Association (ISSA) signed a Memorandum of Understanding. The MOU is an opportunity to further the promotion of both the IAIABC and the ISSA’s efforts to benefit employers, social security associations, and societies at large by reducing the number and impact of work-related injuries, illnesses, and deaths. The MOU was signed by Hans-Horst Konklowesky, Secretary-General, ISSA and Jennifer Wolf Horejsh, Executive Director, IAIABC, in Montevideo, Uruguay during the ISSA Regional Social Security Forum for the Americas.
INNOVATION AWARD
With its second annual Innovation Award, the IAIABC recognized the Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation. Their winning submission, “Saving Lives – Building a Modern Pharmacy Program,” discussed their focus on an injured worker’s functional life and ability to return to work.
The initiatives undertaken with their pharmacy program led to new claim opioid utilization decrease by 48% over 4 years; a decrease of 19.5 million doses prescribed between 2010 and 2016; and opioid use for chronic pain dropped by 11% over 4 years. The Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation also reported a 50:1 return on investment in the program.
The IAIABC looks forward to presenting its third annual Innovation Award in 2018.
