growing public through innovative and collaborative approaches to the

collection, preservation and presentation of American art.

Dwight Eisenhower once said, “Planning is everything … if you haven’t been planning you can’t start to work”. With that in mind, I am pleased to say we at

The Westmoreland are turning well-crafted plans for The Future Westmoreland into a reality.

Trustees and staff spent countless hours

and days throughout the year working with

our architectural firm, Ennead Architects LLP,

reviewing and refining plans for the renovation

and addition to ensure that their striking

architectural design complemented the programming and community centric

approach we want to attain through this transformation.

I am excited to announce the Board of Trustees, in April, approved Ennead’s

final design and plans for the renovation and new wing along with LaQuatra

Bonci’s landscape design, both of which are now out to bid with an anticipated

construction start date of September 2013. The expansion will increase the

Museum’s size by 44% with a LEED certified new wing; renovate the existing

building for new galleries, education areas and gathering spaces; overhaul the

Museum grounds to create a green space with public art that can be utilized

and enjoyed by the entire community; and raise additional funds to increase

our endowment to preserve The Westmoreland into the future.

We are not just building a building, we are building a new kind of museum

experience that will welcome the community and provide unique and creative

opportunities to engage our audience. Furthermore, we are enhancing

and strengthening the Museum’s commitment to a “sense of place,” with a

significant collection of American art rooted in the culture and the people

of our region. This attitude is even reflected in the materials of The Future

Westmoreland, where our lead architects are utilizing resources at the heart of

southwestern Pennsylvania: glass, steel and native plants.

The campaign is off to a strong start. The Richard King Mellon Foundation’s

lead gift of $8 million has and will continue to inspire others in supporting

our campaign, Imagine What’s Possible. Thanks to their generosity all

contributions, up to $25,000, will be matched dollar for dollar by a $2 million

challenge grant. Also, our trustees have risen to the challenge by a combined

gift of nearly $2 million with 100% participation.

We ask you to join us to “imagine the possibilities” next year as our plans

move from the pages of the architectural designs to Greensburg’s skyline. We

look to your support to recruit volunteers, supporters, and friends to spread

the word as we increase public awareness of the exciting plans for your Future

Westmoreland.

Thanks to my fellow board members, our wonderful Museum staff, and all

the friends of the Westmoreland Museum of American Art for making this

year one of great promise for the future.

Sincerely,

Bruce M. Wolf, President, Board of Trustees

FROM THE PRESIDENT

F iscal year 2012-13 was the last year operating out of our main building before the start of the renovation and expansion project and that presented us the opportunity to experiment. We asked

ourselves, “How will we operate in the new building we were planning?,” “How will we change the way we ‘do business’ as an art museum in the 21st century?,” and “How will we follow through on our promise to be a center for the community?“

Mid-year, we started moving the collection as we experimented with ideas for the new galleries at our temporary home. Eventually, we moved the entire permanent collection to the second floor giving us the opportunity to start a series of monthly changing “Pop Up” exhibitions on the now empty first floor. The “Pop Ups” provide regional artists the opportunity to exhibit their work in solo or group shows.

We also organized two exhibitions from the permanent collection and offered them to museums around the country while we “camped out.” The first includes a selection of our greatest hits and the second highlights our collection of regional historical painting representing rural and industrial landscapes. This gave us an opportunity to promote our collection and name, and circulate some of our best works, which would have resided in storage for two years.

In October, we learned that the Museum, in partnership with the City of Greensburg, received a highly competitive “Our Town” grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. The grant provides the opportunity to bring public art into communities, and we plan to use ours to enhance the two concrete and chain link bridges that connect the Museum to the City over the railroad bed.

Toward the end of 2012, we became landlords with the acquisition of 206 North Main Street (across from the main Museum and adjacent to our over flow parking lot), which is earmarked for a future project and will be used in the interim to house offices during construction.

By the spring of 2013, we became tenants by leasing the former Audi-Stickley furniture store on Route 30 between Greensburg and Latrobe. This 30,000 square foot building will serve as the Museum’s temporary quarters during the two-plus year construction period allowing us to continue programming and remaining relevant to the community. It was dubbed Westmoreland @rt 30! Congratulations to our Museum staff who, though expertly trained, had never been confronted with the daunting task of moving an entire museum. Over the summer, we will move in waves to Westmoreland @rt30. The Education Program was the first to relocate and settle in for a full cycle of summer camps. Art, Finance, Development and Administration Teams will follow later in the summer.

Planning for and beginning the relocation our staff, the collection, our education programs, the museum store, and everything in between to a temporary location is a challenge. However, when the dust settles, we will have introduced the Museum to a brand new audience, experimented with innovative ways of doing business, and travelled our collection to new and exciting destinations.

We are so proud and thankful of the staff, students, volunteers, and others who support us and even more so of what they say about us. Alyssa Dreliszak, a Seton Hill graduate and former member of our Visitor Services staff, wrote this:

“A creative spirit was born in 1959 when the Westmoreland Museum of American Art opened its doors. The future museum is vivid and I am sure that Mary Marchand Woods would be pleased to know that ...The Westmoreland would not only realize her vision but exceed her expectations. This is Greensburg’s museum. This is America’s museum. This is my museum. It is your museum.”

Thanks to all of our friends and donors who are along with us for this adventure. We have so appreciated your energy, ideas, and encouragement as we continue this incredible journey.

With very best regards,

TRAVELING EXHIBITIONFrom Blasted Trees to Blast Furnaces

This exhibition brings together 38 works by artists of the

Scalp Level School, who painted the bucolic untouched

natural environment in an area known as Scalp Level, near

Johnstown, Pennsylvania, and those constituting Born of

Fire, depicting the region’s scenes of industry. These complementary

collections illustrate the transformation of the American landscape

from an agrarian society to an industrial one, interpreted in the work

of both Pennsylvania and national artists who chose to celebrate

either Nature or industry as their subject.

A n effective way to increase The Westmoreland’s reputation as an important cultural institution is to lend works of art from the permanent collection to other museums. Lending promotes collegial relationships between museums and provides national

and international audience exposure to works from our outstanding collection.
