Annual Report 2007

1

Dear Friends,

The year 2007 has been a turning point for the New England Aquarium. Thanks to solid annual attendance, robust fundraising efforts and some smart financial decisions, we’ve been able to improve our fiscal health, plan for exciting new exhibits and strengthen essential conservation and research efforts.

Buoyed by a successful 2007, the Aquarium has begun to implement an ambitious five-year Action Plan. On the financial side, that included a successful effort to raise nearly $12 million in restricted gifts for the plan, as well as a bond restructuring program that will drastically cut debt service costs over the next 10 years. We completed our brand positioning strategy and began work on an entirely new Aquarium website to communicate our mission and programs more effectively.

Through our mission:blue initiative, we’re redefining what it means to be an aquarium—combining education, entertainment and action to address the most challenging problems facing the oceans. We are a global leader in ocean exploration and marine conservation, as well as the only Boston-based cultural institution with a mission focused primarily on the environment.

Our groundbreaking research continued on topics such as lobster shell disease and the critically endangered right whale, and we continued to attract young minds to science with programs created to inspire future ocean protectors. The Aquarium welcomed more than 100,000 school children in 2007 and reached out to 30,000 more with programs that brought traveling tidepools and life-size inflatable whales into schools.

All of these successes were accomplished thanks to our dedicated staff, enthusiastic volunteers and generous supporters. We look forward to continuing our work and implementing exciting new programs to achieve goals on Central Wharf and beyond.

In 2007, 1.3 million people experienced our exhibits and programming here in Boston. Visitors came face-to-face with our signature animals, such as the African penguin and the endangered leafy seadragon, and learned how these animals and their habitats have been impacted by humans.

With climate change on our minds, and in the world mindset, we completed a detailed review of how the oceans and marine life will be affected and initiated a collaboration with five other major aquariums to launch national education programs on this important topic.

We made more strides in our work to protect the critically endangered North Atlantic right whale. With fewer than 400 of these animals alive today, our Right Whale Research Project has been working to protect them from collisions with ships and entanglements in fishing gear. A major victory this year was the designation of the Roseway Basin (south of Nova Scotia, Canada) as an “Area to be Avoided,” greatly reducing the possibility of ship-whale collisions in a critical right whale habitat.

On other conservation fronts, we began a multi-year study to assess the impact on marine life of a major new

LNG (liquefied natural gas) terminal off of Gloucester. And we developed a new business model for our sustainable fisheries program that will lead to significant expansion.

To continue providing our world-class exhibits and programming, an exhibit master plan was completed in 2007, which includes renovation and modernization plans for the next four years. We also completed a plan to upgrade the exterior Aquarium plazas, with the goal of creating a more welcoming public space that brings the Aquarium’s mission outside and connects the Aquarium to its fantastic waterfront location and the newly completed Rose Kennedy Greenway.

State Provides Cultural GrantsThe Aquarium received three grants from the Massachusetts Cultural Council (MCC) in 2007. In addition to operating support, MCC awarded a YouthReach grant for our Teen Internship program. We also received funds to upgrade the filtration system for our penguin and Giant Ocean Tank exhibits through the Cultural Facilities Fund, a collaboration between MCC and MassDevelopment.

Making a Lasting ImpactThrough our mission:blue initiative, we are exploring the oceans for innovative solutions, inspiring others through our exhibits and education programs, and promoting living a blue lifestyle.

In July of 2007, Aquarium scientists Scott Kraus and Rosalind Rolland traveled 350 miles south of New Zealand to the Auckland Islands as part of a three-week National Geographic expedition to observe southern right whales. These whales live in near isolation from humans and, unlike the critically endangered North Atlantic right whale, have slowly begun to thrive.

The goal of the expedition was to observe and look for clues as to whether this isolation improved the whales’ reproduction and survival rates.

Scott chronicled the entire three-week expedition in a blog that appears on the Aquarium’s website, and a story on the expedition ran in the quarterly member magazine.

In late September, Aquarium scientist Greg Stone, along with other scientists from organizations such as the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI), explored the depths of the Celebes Sea in the midst of the Indo-Pacific to discover what creatures might be waiting in the inky depths. The Celebes Sea is a uniquely protected environment that could harbor living fossils—relics dating

back tens or hundreds of millions of years.

During this successful one-week expedition, some of the creatures discovered were never before seen by humans. Greg’s expedition blog appears on www.neaq.org and he will author a National Geographic article in early 2009.

As another milestone in the Aquarium’s global conservation work, the small Pacific Islands nation of Kiribati announced in early 2008 that the marine protected area established in 2006 had been expanded to become the world’s largest. This California-sized ocean wilderness is filled with pristine coral reefs and rich fish populations threatened by overfishing and climate change.

The New England Aquarium first suggested the idea of a marine protected area to the Kiribati government in the late 1990s and has helped

guide the development of the Phoenix Islands Protected Area (PIPA) since 2000. Marine protected areas are the oceanic equivalent of national parks and forests.

Special thanks to the Global Conservation Fund for their generous donation that supports this important work.

Exploring the Oceans, Seeking SolutionsOur scientists and global explorers travel the world to uncover the mysteries of the seas. The better we understand the oceans, the more prepared we are to protect them.

The 2007 David B. Stone Medal was presented to Dr. Rita Colwell and Dr. Kerry Emanuel. The medal is awarded biannually for distinguished service on behalf of the oceans.

As the first female director of the National Science Foundation, Dr. Rita Colwell helped save countless lives through her pioneering studies on how cholera and other waterborne diseases spread through estuarine ecosystems. She is currently developing an international network to address global warming issues, including waterborne diseases and safe drinking water.

Dr. Kerry Emanuel is a professor of Atmospheric Science at MIT and the author of Divine Wind: The History and Science of Hurricanes. Dr. Emanuel was named one of Time’s 100 Most Influential People of 2006 for his work in climate change science. His latest book, What We Know About Climate Change, was released in September of 2007.

Past recipients of the medal include oceanographer Jacques Yves Cousteau (1973) and Senator John Kerry (1997).

Aquarium educators clocked a successful year of introducing future ocean protectors to the world of water. More than 100,000 school children visited the Aquarium in 2007. Onsite educators had a busy year conducting programs for children of all ages, including Family Explorer Classes, Family Field Trips, Overnights at the Aquarium and the Women in Science Day. Outreach educators carried the Aquarium’s mission beyond Central Wharf to deliver ocean education programs to more than 30,000 children in New England schools with the Traveling Tidepool, Rockhopper Hop and other sold-out outreach programs. The innovative Teen Internship program, Harbor Discoveries Camp and after-school programs reached 12,000 inner city youths.

The Aquarium’s Whale Watch recorded another great year as humpbacks continued their resurgence in the area. The playful giants are returning in greater numbers to the Stellwagen Bank Marine Sanctuary to feed on increasing numbers of sand lance. With food sources on the rise in the sanctuary, it looks as though Aquarium visitors will continue to be guaranteed a glimpse at the largest animals on Earth. The Whale Zone summer program held outside on the Harbor Terrace complemented this strong whale watching season as well as the IMAX film Whales to teach visitors about these massive animals. Different stations provided hands-on learning about topics such as whale anatomy and research.

Our innovative exhibits and educational programs aim to teach and inspire the next generation of ocean stewards.

New Balance Foundation Gives $3 Million GiftIn November of 2007, the New Balance Foundation gave the Aquarium a $3 million gift to help build the New Balance Foundation Marine Mammal Center and launch new educational programs. The Aquarium is planning to begin construction in the fall of 2008, with a grand opening in the spring of 2009 to coincide with the Aquarium’s 40th anniversary. The center will give visitors an opportunity for up-close interaction with the Aquarium’s intelligent and playful marine mammals. The exhibit’s athletic and energetic animals will showcase a “Get Your Feet Wet” initiative designed to promote childhood exercise and fitness.

Aquarium visitors got a fresh look at signature animals during the 2007 Walk Like a Penguin and Killer Instincts theme programs. Throughout the year, children and adults alike navigated the exhibit halls with their passports—booklets filled with fun facts and a map of the different animal stations. At each station, visitors could stamp their passport, view the animal’s exhibit and read fun facts. During the Killer Instincts theme program, visitors were guided to the Giant Ocean Tank’s seemingly fearsome sand tiger sharks and barracudas before being shocked with the revelation that one of the deadliest animals in the aquarium is actually the tiny, unassuming lionfish.

Parents Magazine Lists Aquarium In Top Five For KidsAfter an expert survey of more than 60 facilities, the New England Aquarium ranked in the top five aquariums for kids in the nation. The August 2007 article evaluated aquariums based on education value, kid-friendliness and interactive features, among other qualities. Also, Parents praised the Aquarium’s Walk Like a Penguin and Killer Instincts programs, Curious George Discovery Corner, “huggable sculptures of penguins” and “fabulous” whale watching cruises.

Two major communications strategies were finalized in 2007 in preparation for launch in 2008. A brand-new website and a major revamping of our members’ magazine will highlight the positive impact that our exhibits, education and conservation work have on the planet.

Living the Blue LifestyleWe promote individual responsibility for the health of the oceans. Our exhibits inspire ocean conservation, and our scientists and researchers provide the tools and information necessary to live “blue.”

Alan Dynner—Living the Blue LifestyleAs Chairman of the Aquarium’s Board of Overseers, Alan Dynner embodies the blue lifestyle. An avid scuba diver, Alan has been involved with the Aquarium for more than 10 years and has served on the Board of Overseers for the last five. “I’m proud to support the New England Aquarium, not only because of its role in educating visitors about the marine environment,” Alan says. “More importantly to me, it is also a global leader in programs that have a direct and profound impact on ocean conservation.”

Alan accompanied the Aquarium on an expedition to survey Thailand’s coral reefs after 2004’s devastating tsunami. He has generously made a financial commitment to the Aquarium’s Action Plan, supports the organization with annual operating gifts, and has established the Akiko Shiraki Dynner Fund for Ocean Exploration and Conservation. The fund is named in memory of his late wife and supports the Aquarium’s conservation work in such locations as the Phoenix Islands in the Pacific Island nation of Kiribati.

Alan, a graduate of Dartmouth College and Yale Law School, recently retired from Eaton Vance Corporation in Boston and is enjoying his time off by scuba diving, traveling the world and of course, visiting the Aquarium.

Blue Planet Online Auction A Resounding SuccessThe Aquarium’s Blue Planet Online Auction raised more than $84,000 for our education and community programs. Thanks to generous donations, the auction was able to offer packages—such as Super Bowl tickets and luxury weekend getaways—normally near impossible for the general public to access.

The Aquarium—with generous support from the Lowell Institute—also featured a robust lineup of Aquarium Lectures in 2007. They are free to the public and feature expert speakers on a variety of topics, from scientists showcasing their projects to authors explaining the findings in their latest book.

In 2007, the Aquarium used its expertise to promote ocean-friendly seafood. Nationally, we continued to develop a new business model for the Sustainable Fisheries Initiative, which places our conservation team as advisors to such clients as Ahold USA (parent company of Stop & Shop), Darden Restaurants and Gorton’s to help them buy seafood from well-managed and environmentally responsible sources. Locally, the Celebrate Seafood Dinner Series, an evening event featuring three courses of gourmet sustainable seafood paired with fine wine, showed guests that choosing environmentally responsible seafood is both simple and delicious.

Many programs on Central Wharf motivate the public to join us in making eco-friendly choices. As visitors tour the exhibits, they become inspired to help protect the animals they have come to adore. In 2007, stunning films at our Simons IMAX Theatre, including Whales, Sea Monsters 3D and Lions 3D, captivated visitors and brought them face-to-face with fascinating present-day and prehistoric creatures.

In January 2007, the Board of Trustees approved a five-year Action Plan, which includes construction of the Marine Mammal Center, rebuilding the Giant Ocean Tank, improvements to the plaza and Harborwalk and enhancements to the Aquarium’s website, education, conservation and research programs. In 2007, corporations, foundations and individuals donated, pledged or committed nearly $12 million to the objectives outlined in the Action Plan.

New Balance Foundation led the way with a $3 million gift earmarked for the construction of the New Balance Foundation Marine Mammal Center and accompanying educational programming.

Donors also contributed $4.5 million in annual unrestricted operating gifts, including membership, and an additional $1.5 million for restricted programs, for a total of $18 million.

Supporting the New England Aquarium

Membership in 2007More than 18,500 members contributed $2 million in operating support. Member events included Adult Members’ Night; Fish, Fun & Fright, a family Halloween extravaganza and a first-ever Holiday Shopping Night. Each of our free Take the Bait Open Houses gave members a chance to experience the Aquarium after hours.

Corporations, foundations and individuals showed enthusiastic support for the Aquarium in 2007 by donating, pledging or committing nearly $18 million.

Navigator and Conservation SocietiesSupport at the Conservation and Navigator Society levels continued to grow in 2007. These donors contributed $1.5 million in unrestricted support. The Boards of Trustees and Overseers reconvened a Navigator Society Committee co-chaired by Trustee Mary Renner, Overseer Carolyn Campanelli and Overseer Dan Evans. In November, close to 400 people attended Navigator Families and Friends Night for a private evening of insider activities and fun.

Donors Host Aquarium EventsIn 2007, Overseer Candy Stecker and her husband Ray hosted a cocktail party to engage new donors and introduce them to the Aquarium. The evening featured Vice President of Research Scott Kraus and the right whale program.

Overseers Beth Kurtin and Doug Karp co-hosted an event featuring sustainable seafood prepared by Barbara Lynch, chef and owner of No. 9 Park. Overseer Brian Skerry presented amazing photographs previously featured in National Geographic.

Future Leaders for a Blue Planet and Corporate Conservation NightIn its second year, the Future Leaders for a Blue Planet program raised $335,000 from Corporate Sponsors. These funds provided scholarships for more than 120 children to attend Harbor Discoveries Camp and brought the Aquarium’s right whale program to Massachusetts schools. The Boston Harbor Hotel served as host for Corporate Conservation Night when 200 Corporate Partners, board members and supporters celebrated the Future Leaders program and the Aquarium’s research work. Year-End Financial SummaryThe New England Aquarium had another terrific year in 2007. Overall attendance of 1.3 million visitors was slightly above 2006 and generally in line with our average over the past several years. We had a robust summer period as many tourists to Boston enjoyed our exhibits and programs. Although attendance at the Simons IMAX Theatre declined in 2007 due to the lack of new programming, the theatre continues to delight audiences and is a vital component of the overall visitor experience.

Operating revenue and support in 2007 increased to $35.8 million—6% more than 2006 driven by increases in admissions, contract activity and various other revenues. Unrestricted operating revenues from fundraising efforts, including memberships, were somewhat lower in 2007 but restricted net assets increased by $7.8 million as a result of donations and pledges in support of our long-term plans. These gifts significantly improved our financial profile and will be used in future years for important capital projects and new mission-based programs.

Overall operating expenses of $33.8 million increased 6% in 2007 due to higher program spending, exhibit improvements and higher fundraising costs. Resulting cash flow was more than sufficient to fund operations, finance important capital expenditures and continue to reduce liabilities. Total liabilities were reduced again in 2007 and our ratio of net assets (equity) to liabilities continued its positive trend.

Culminating multi-year efforts to improve the institution’s fiscal position, we successfully issued new stand-alone 30-year tax-exempt bonds in November. The new bonds refinanced the amount outstanding under high cost bonds issued in 1998 to build the Aquarium’s West Wing and significantly reduced the level of associated costs. In total, debt service costs (i.e. principal, interest and fees) will be reduced by an average of more than $1 million annually over the next 10 years.

We have prepared a comprehensive operating plan for 2008—one that projects many attractive outcomes. We look forward to reporting our continued progress.
