ANNUAL REPORT
THE LEAGUE: A BRIEF HISTORY
MISSIONTo provide and promote opportunities that EMPOWER
people with disabilities to achieve their potential.
VISIONThe full inclusion of people with disabilities in
all aspects of community life.
Helen Keller: Seeding a Legacy
The League’s story begins in 1946 when the local Community Chest asked the Social Planning Council to conduct a study to determine if services for the Blind should be carried out by a part-time employee or if there is need for a new nonprofit orga-nization. The Council created an interim committee to set up the new agency, which brought Helen Keller to Fort Wayne in 1949. Keller challenged the community to address the needs of the Blind, and helped to raise the needed seed funds for the organi-zation’s first two year’s operating budget.
With many volunteer hours committed by a group of dedicated folks in the community, the League for the Blind and Disabled was officially incorporated in 1950 and operations began along with obtaining 501(c)3 status in 1951. The League has been proudly serving the blind ever since, adding services for all per-sons with all disabilities in NE Indiana as of 1981.

INCLUSION
EMPOWER
Since 2006 when The League acquired Deaflink, this Division has been serving Deaf and Hard of Hearing Consumers in NE Indiana with sign-
language interpreting and case coordination services.
Home Care Plus is a fee-for-service program providing non-medical resdential care assistance to consumers, enabling them to remain in
their homes and communities. Services include respite care, homemak-ing and attendant care. In 2017, The League expanded the program with Home HealthCare Plus which provides consumers with quality, licensed
health care assitance in homes such as medication management, diagnosis education, and chronic condition support in addition to the
core residential services offerred by Home Care Plus.
In 1981, The League became the first Center for Independent Living in Indiana. At that time, a new consumer driven philosophy and mission was adopted to serve people with all disabilities. This division consists of the following programs: Independent Living Skills Training, Informa-tion & Referral, Individual & Group Peer Support Services, Individual & Systems Advocacy, Orientation & Mobility Training, Adaptive Equip-
ment Services, Youth Services, Senior Blind Services, Braille Services, Volunteer Services and Community Support Service.
