A Message from the President

ike so many non-profit organizations across Pennsylvania and the country, we began the year worrying about what was happening in Harrisburg and Washington, DC. I am pleased to report that we ended the year in a positive financial position. This is a testament to both sound management and the generosity of our community.

Further attesting to The Arc’s sound management was a successful recertification in the Standards for Excellence Program through the Pennsylvania Association of Nonprofit Organizations (PANO). This is a rigorous process that evaluates organizations on their compliance with best practices in the areas of ethics and accountability. Congratulations to Diane Carey and her team for achieving this.

On the next page you’ll read about one of many families positively impacted by The Arc’s Agency with Choice program. This program grew from seven clients in its first six months to 54 at the end of the fiscal year, and it keeps growing and growing. Another program that experienced tremendous growth was ABBLE, Autism...Building the Basics through Learning Experiences. The first and only program of its kind, ABBLE offers two-year-old children with autism a classroom experience to prepare them for preschool.

It is my pleasure to thank you, our loyal supporters, for all you do throughout the year to benefit The Arc. Our generous family of donors, volunteers, and friends allows us to continue bettering lives for people with disabilities. To honor and recognize our many donors and their generosity, we offer sincere thanks to all and list each contributor in this year’s report.

A Message from the President

Faces of The Arc: Danae Hayes ifficult does not mean impossible” is the motto 24-year-old Danae Hayes lives by. She has a winning smile and an outgoing personality. Danae truly enjoys people and succeeds as a greeter at Walmart. Her goal is to run the jewelry or cosmetics department at a retail store someday.

Danae’s intellectual disability doesn’t hold her back. She graduated from the William Penn School District in 2004 and completed studies at the Academy for Adult Learning at Temple University in May 2010. For Danae, learning is a lifelong journey. She hopes to learn about computers and fashion design. Aside from her studies, Danae finds time for volunteer work. She helps out at Ambler College where she tends to plants and flowers.

In her spare time, Danae enjoys listening to gospel music and attending church services. She lives in Aldan with her parents. It was Danae’s mother, Sylvia, who helped her connect with The Arc of Chester County’s Agency with Choice program. This move allowed the Hayes family to hire a support service worker of their choice.

Enter Nia Lott. Nia has expertise in personal presentation skills such as makeup application, hairstyling, and work-appropriate dress. She is helping Danae look her best each day so she can reach her work goals.

The Agency with Choice program has allowed Danae to work with someone of her choosing without her or her family having to worry about payroll processing, tax withholding, or the other details of being an employer. This partnership with The Arc has worked well for Danae, Sylvia, and Nia and the overwhelming number of families selecting this option for arranging care.

President’s Award - West Chester UniversityThe Arc has benefited tremendously over the years from being a WCU neighbor. Each year we have hosted interns from the university’s social work program. These students have been a tremendous help in our First Step early intervention program as well as helping us evaluate other programs. WCU has been a great resource for a myriad of part-time and seasonal jobs at The Arc—many recreation counselors hail from WCU. Students have staffed the annual phonathon, and the Abbe’ and Friar Societies have devoted countless hours each year to our recreation programs. The WCU Best Buddies chapter provides on-on-one pairings to foster friendships between Arc participants and WCU students. Ruth Wood Philanthropic Leadership Award - The Siegel FamilyThe Ruth Wood Philanthropic Leadership Award is named for Ruth Wood, one of The Arc’s most dedicated founders. This award is presented annually to an individual or family exemplifying commitment, dedication, and ardent support of The Arc. Bob Siegel, Jr. served nine years on The Arc’s board, including two as president. His son Jeffrey graduated from First Step and has participated in Camp Safari and Teen Camp. Bob, Sr. and Dolores have regularly engaged friends and families in attending The Arc’s annual gala and supporting The Arc in other ways. Bob, Sr., a former State Farm employee, was instrumental in securing funding from State Farm to support construction of the First Step playground during the capital campaign. 2010 Arc AwardsEach year The Arc of Chester County is pleased to honor local businesses, donors, volunteers, and other friends who have made a difference in the lives of people with disabilities in Chester County. Five awards were given out this past year.

Advocate of the Year Award - Anita CutraraThe West Chester Area School District’s special education parent survey results would never have been submitted to the Pennsylvania Department of Education compliance office without Anita’s dedication and support. As a result of Anita’s efforts and those of others, WCASD now has a special education parent advisory committee reporting to and advising the special education office. This is a Chester County first. Anita is the personification of parent engagement. She has been an incredible advocate for her own children and now co-chairs the local Right to Education Task Force. Her volunteer efforts, devotion, and determination to help and to make a difference do indeed make a difference. Pictured left: Anita Cutrara proudly displays her award. Lifetime Achievement Award - Allen ThomasIt’s not often for someone to go so above-and-beyond that a lifetime achievement award is in order. Al Thomas first joined The Arc’s board of directors in 1988. In this round of three three-year terms, he rose through the ranks to treasurer then president and served two additional years as past president. Per The Arc’s bylaws, Al had to rotate off, but he did not disappear. Al rejoined the board and once again served as president. He is currently in his final year of service as immediate past president. Al played a key role in The Arc’s capital campaign as the facilities committee chair and has been instrumental in securing funding for The Arc from the First Presbyterian Church of West Chester. Over the years, he has also been willing to speak up on behalf of The Arc, whether it was to a local Rotary Club or as an advocate with government officials. Volunteer of the Year Award - Joanne ShultzJoanne devoted hundreds of hours to The Arc this past year as an honorary member of the development department. Starting in January until the school year began this fall, Joanne was at The Arc three days per week tackling a variety of projects. She was the Arc Art program’s unofficial MVP. From organizing a complete inventory of Arc Art to physically moving framed prints to and fro, Joanne was a go-to gal. She was also a whiz at organization. Her attention to detail helped staff clean up both digital and paper records. Whatever administrative help was needed, Joanne supplied.
