A Letter to Our Community

This has been an exciting year of revitalization and growth for the Student Excellence

Foundation, and we are thrilled to be recognized in the community for our work. As education

continues to be reshaped through advancements in technology and educational strategies,

the need for innovative programs and the classroom technology to support them is growing at

an exponential rate. The Foundation is working to fill that need and to help prepare students

better to succeed in a global society.

We are pleased to report the impact of this work on the students of District 200. During the

2016-2017 school year, the Foundation:

• Awarded 27 Student Excellence Grants, fostering innovation in the classroom.

• Provided future-ready programs and resources to 19 schools in District 200, stimulating

creativity, critical thinking, communication, and collaboration.

• Funded over $57,000 worth of new programs, materials and resources to teachers and

students.

• Helped raise $75,000 for classroom build-outs for the new Business INCubator courses at

both high schools.

• Implemented Fund-A-Classroom, a crowd-funding website unique to District 200.

• To all 13 elementary schools in District 200, provided re-usable engineering cubes

consisting of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) materials offering hands-on

activities which allow students to retain more of what they are taught.

• Organized and operated a very successful STEM Expo.

• Awarded a grant to the school of the winner of the Entrepreneurship Expo.

• Provided Distinguished Educator Awards to six educators who personified educational

excellence in the classroom.

None of this would have been possible without the generous support of our donors

and volunteers. Thank you!

About Us

The Student Excellence Foundation enriches educational

opportunities for District 200 students through:

The Foundation awarded 27 Student

Excellence Grants to teachers for

innovative projects totaling over $50,000

during the 2016-2017 fiscal year. Many of

these programs and resources will benefit

students for years to come. The chart to

the right indicates the educational

elements targeted by these grants.

Most grants awarded for programs and resources this year will benefit students for years to come.

Please note: Not all schools have had teachers apply for a grant.

*Amounts do not include donations made via the Fund-a-Classroom web site.

Students are Challenged to Think Like

Engineers

An engineering cube is simply a box

containing materials for students to use

for project-based learning that

incorporates STEM. When students use

engineering cubes they are challenged to

think like engineers, designing and

building. They evaluate and redesign their

projects as needed to meet the challenge.

*

Elementary Students Gain Hands-on

Robotics Experience

An Ozobot is a miniature smart robot

that can follow lines or roam around

freely, and detect colors. It can also be

programmed. Ozobots are now helping

students at Madison Elementary learn

about robotics, programming, and math

in a collaborative environment.
