Introduction

The Multimedia Development Center is located on the second floor IIT annex of the Rolvaag Memorial Library. We specialize in multimedia design, production, and tutorial services. The current academic year staff includes Janet Collrin and nine student workers who support the St. Olaf community (see Figure A).

For the summer of 2010, two of these workers stayed on as full-time employees under the direction of Janet Collrin Cameron.

Staff

Janet Collrin is the Multimedia Teaching Consultant, supervising all staff of MDC. She has been with the MDC since 1990. She received her BFA from Central Michigan University and her MFA from the University of Minnesota.

Allison Schedin is a rising Junior, creating her own individual major of Multimedia and Software Design. Specializes in image manipulation.

Dan Haywood is a highly skilled Senior. Specializes in video editing.

Erin Arnesen is a talented Junior with an English and media studies major who is interested in pursuing a career in graphic design.

The MDC staff comes from an interdisciplinary background, each bringing new and unique talents to our team.

Josh Jackson is a exceptional Junior majoring in Asian Studies and ESL education. Specializes in website design.

Kai Hansen is a dedicated Senior pursuing his own individual major of Commercialization of Media. Specializes in graphic design.

Martin Santangelo is a rising Sophomore. Specializes in technology and interdepartmental communication.

Rorie Morrison is an upcoming Sophomore working in the MDC and honing her Photoshop and tutoring skills.

Steve Milne is a hard working Senior majoring in Political Science and Economics. Specializes in QTVRs, sound, and video.

Olivia Schares is a creative Junior majoring in Environmental Studies. Specializes in posters.

The MDC is one of the few places on campus that works with video shooting, editing, and production (see Figure CC).

The MDC has the capability to handle the following video projects: CD/DVD burning CD/DVD ripping Final Cut Pro editing iMovie editing Mini DV to DVD QTVRs Slide shows VHS to DVD Video shooting Video type conversion

Printing

The printing facilities of the MDC accommodate a wide range of projects. We make use of three industrial grade printers, each suited for different needs. The Epson Stylus Photo R1800 printer is used for high quality photo printing; the Xerox Phaser 7400 is used for CD labels and other various print jobs including sizes 8.5”x11” and 11”x17” in color, and the Canon ImagePrograf 8400 is used for wide-format printing up to 42” wide and 100” long.

The MDC helps the demand for professional quality photography on the St. Olaf campus. Our equipment includes two Canon Rebel cameras, a professional grade lighting kit, a number of tripods for many different situations and three scanners. A MDC photographic specialty is QuickTime Virtual Reality (QTVR) objects and tours, which simulate a real-life experience of any item or space. At St. Olaf they are mainly utilized for dorm and classroom tours on the main website (http://www.stolaf.edu/virtualtour). We can also handle slide scanning and digital archive management.

Design

Design is a major responsibility of the MDC, whether it be a poster, PowerPoint presentation, or other media project. The staff is equipped with the knowledge for image manipulation, poster creation, PowerPoint shows, website design, and video.

Workshops

It is the MDC’s responsibility to train both students and faculty in various technological skills. Some previous workshops include Adobe Photoshop Elements, PowerPoint poster production, basic photography, scanning, and online portfolio creation.

Went to Kelsey Theater for a photo shoot. Brought along light kit and took about 80 pictures. Then came back to the MDC, showed in slideshow, printed out contact sheets, and narrowed the photos down to the top 11 photos. Printed out new contact sheets. Chose picture to be used on the poster and burned two CD's of the photos.

Multimedia Development Center Inventory. Used an old list to check for equipment that had asset numbers and were recorded, then looked for equipment that had asset numbers but was not listed, and equipment that had no asset number and was not listed, but should have be listed. Compiled information on all of these things in a spreadsheet by asset number. Also went through listed items that were not found and determined what happened to them. Went through all cameras, speakers, computers, external hard drives, scanners, tablets, televisions, printers, etc.
