Dear Pacific Crest Community,
It has been another great year for our school. We are so pleased to have this opportunity to serve Pacific Crest and to be able to share through this Annual Report, the Board’s plans and priorities, while highlighting the everyday magic happening in our classrooms.
Guided by a broad evaluation of our needs, the Board created a plan to ensure that our most treasured traditions and Montessori whole child educational programs will thrive for many generations to come. We welcomed our first-ever Development Director this fall and created a Board committee dedicated to expanding development efforts. We are excited to reserve 100% of this fall’s Starlight Auction “Raise the Paddle” funds to support professional development for our marvelous teachers. Together, we are committed to supporting a Montessori school culture that is inclusive and prepares our students to live respectfully and contribute to the future of our society.
We are in the process of finalizing a reconfiguration of the land at the Farm to enhance the educational value to our students. With minimal financial output to the school we have added acreage for woodland and stream ecology. The additional benefit to this land rearrangement is the long-term commitment of our Farm managers.
Other goals for this year include the continued improvement of our school communications, to foster connections, support our teachers, and provide opportunities for the entire community to become engaged in planning for Pacific Crest’s future.
Our school is an extraordinary place, providing a Montessori education in developmentally based, caring, prepared environments. The success of our alumni, as students and as members of their communities, is built directly upon the foundation that was laid here at Pacific Crest School. We are honored to have the opportunity to help preserve and improve Pacific Crest for future generations of students and families.
Thanks to everyone in the Pacific Crest family, including those listed in the Gratitude section of this report, and to all who provide the volunteer and philanthropic support that helps sustain this remarkable institution.
Sincerely,
Rhonda H. MunroHead of School

Our mission is to provide a dynamic learning environment that exemplifies the principles of Montessori education. We foster independence, self discipline, and joy in our students so that they are prepared to participate with confidence as citizens in a changing world.

“In every level, Primary, Elementary, and Adolescent, our program helps students to find meaning and inter-relatedness in knowledge, and to transcend the confines of a self-centered existence.

It is not enough for the teacher to restrict herself to loving and understanding the child; she must first love and understand the universe.” -Maria Montessori
“
Our aim is not merely to make the child understand and still less to force him to memorize, but to touch his imagination as to enthuse him to his innermost core.” -Maria Montessori

The Pacific Crest Farm serves both as a second campus for the students and as a seasonal gathering place where the greater school community can gather, volunteer, and celebrate.
It was a strong vision, sheer determination, and a successful gathering of resources that allowed Pacific Crest School to purchase the Farm in in 2004. Since that time, countless hours of effort have gone into renovating the Farm, establishing a viable organic fruit and vegetable production business featuring over two hundred varieties, bringing animals to the land, and developing an integrated curriculum for all grade levels.
Primary students visit the Farm informally, taking special outings to embrace the natural surroundings and gain interest in the larger world through exploratory walks, pumpkin picking and carving, and soil preparation.
The Elementary Farm Program is designed to satisfy these young students’ deep desire for knowledge and understanding. Classes participate in tasks such as harvesting vegetables, threshing dry beans, collecting hazelnuts, and seeding vegetable starts in the greenhouse.

Middle School students visit the Farm regularly and engage in crop production, food preparation, science investigations, and art/design projects. Through these learning experiences, our oldest students grow aware of their strengths and of the ways in which they can contribute to their communities.
In 2014, platforms tents and composting toilets were installed thanks to funds generously donated at the Starlight Auction. These additions allow Middle School students to comfortably extend their visits overnight, strengthening their independence and letting them fully emerge in the hard work they practice while at the Farm.
Pacific Crest Farm is an integral part of our community, an outdoor classroom that fills us with pride, and our students and their families with joy. With continued support, the Farm will continue to thrive and one day become self-sufficient.
Those with hands and no head and those with head and no hands are equally out of place in the modern community.”
-Maria Montessori

Being a Parent Coordinator has been a rewarding experience. Working along side a group of talented, caring, innovative, and above all, giving parents has enriched my community spirit and allowed me to help our culture of community thrive.” -Holland Peterson, PCS Parent

At Pacific Crest, we work together! Parents are active members of the community, giving generously of their time, talents, and support, enhancing the life of the school in many ways.
Parents volunteer their time and many skills to help with everything from school outings to chairing school-wide events. For new parents, volunteering is a wonderful opportunity to meet other families and to start forging long lasting relationships.
In return, the school strives to support our families’ dynamic schedules by offering a robust Before & After Care Program. Led by a Montessori trained staff and held in a home-like setting, this program supports lessons taught in the classrooms. In addition, these students are treated to frequent outings to our city’s favorite cultural and outdoor destinations.
Our spirit of community is a powerful cornerstone of the Pacific Crest culture, making our school a wonderful and unique place. Join us, students, teachers, staff, and parents, as we work together creating memories and weave traditions through the fabric of the year.

This year we exceeded our Annual Giving financial goal, raising $140,000. These funds help to close the $1,200 gap, per student, between tuition and the actual cost of education.
Wanting to ensure that a Pacific Crest School education remains accessible to all families for many generations to come, we are committed to renewing the focus on our financial goals and sustainability.
We invite all families to participate in this journey, allowing us to maintain a legacy of success, discovering amazing feats in unexpected places every step of the way.

My Pacific Crest teachers taught me how to advocate for myself while collaborating with others. Everyone—teachers and students—was respected as individual thinkers and I always felt important and equal, regardless of my age.”
