Safe Harbors 2020 Annual Report • 3
Though it is published in early spring of the current year, our Annual Report is designed to reflect and report on the finances, activities and events of the previous year. Like the rest of the world, we were relieved to bid farewell to 2020; but are proud of how we met the unique challenges of that crazy year with the support of our friends, funders and colleagues.
2020 tested our organization, our community and our nation, but was met with strength, kindness, generosity and resilience.
Here at Safe Harbors, we prioritized the health and wellness of our residents and staff members; we strived to be sensitive and responsive to issues of isolation, uncertainty and social, racial and political upheaval; and we dedicated ourselves to lifting the spirits and soothing the souls of our community members with a weekly dose of virtually presented dance, music, spoken word and critical conversation.
With the incredible generosity of foundations and individual donors who rose to the occasion with speed and magnanimity, we were able to absorb the loss of programming revenue and manage the increased cost of essential supplies. Having this strong network of support allowed us to continue to strengthen our mission of transforming lives and building community through housing and the arts.
Times of crisis test our mettle and, during this unprecedented year, I was proud to work alongside an incredible team of dedicated colleagues in service to a community that supports those most in need.
Thank you to each and every one of you, and stay well!
Onward!

Newburgh with Love, a Valentine for our City, kicked off the 2020 season in the Lobby at the Ritz. The love poetry of Poet Laureate, Mona Toscano, with the accompaniment of Neil Alexander, steamed up the venue and warmed the hearts of those in the audience!
Our Black History Month Youth Festival showcased the many talents of our young friends and neighbors and was enjoyed by a standing-room-only crowd.
The Washington Project, Ritz Kidz Talent Show, and the Newburgh Enlarged City School District Art Show followed with great community collaboration and youth participation.
When the world went into lockdown, Safe Harbors Lobby at the Ritz ramped it up! With the help of a community of talented and generous friends and performers, we quickly pivoted to online programming, presenting Plugged in for the Ritz, a musical series, and Act + React, a series of monologues and conversations. Even Salsa Under the Stars went virtual with music and dance performances that could be enjoyed from the comfort and safety of home, where you could dance along in your pajamas!
With health and safety protocol in place, Ritz Kidz Circus on the Green was able to continue as a two-week summer program focusing on a smaller group of returning students. Thanks to the generous support from our community and the National Endowment for the Arts, students expanded their circus arts skills and leadership training under the guidance of a world class circus coaching team.

In-Kind PerformersThank you to the long list of performers who gave so generously of their time and talent to keep our community engaged and plugged in during the long year of isolation.
We were grateful Ann Street Gallery was open (with limited capacity and virtually) throughout the year. The season opened with The Contemporary Art of Quilting, an exhibition of over 40 quilts by 20 artists who are experimenting with this fiber-based art form while pushing boundaries and challenging expectations. Visitors immersed themselves in the rare opportunity to view a compilation of cutting-edge quilt interpretations resplendent in design and concept.
House Party - Paintings by Erica Hauser followed with a gallery full of bright, bold, exuberant works, inspired by mid-century color and design. The opening event was shared live on Facebook and included an engaging conversation with Erica about her work and inspiration.
Influenced by Nature, guest curated by local artist and curator Kirsten Kucer, featured a collection of works by artists each expressing and recording their personal relationship to nature and the world around us.
The Black Renaissance Festival Exhibit and Celebration, opened in conjunction with Newburgh Open Studios and in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement, was a collaboration with Black community leaders, artists and activists amplifying Black voices in our community. The diverse selection of works included a closed loop video featuring performances by spoken word artists, dancers, singers and instrumentalists; and an exhibition of visual arts that included an incredible and inspiring collection of photographs, oils, acrylics, pastels, collages and textiles.

VOICES FROM THE COMMUNITYCURTIS WALKERPoet, Trainer, Athlete and EntrepreneurI was raised in the inner city of Newburgh, NY, where a tough time can seem to last an eternity. I would like to take this moment to thank Safe Harbors of the Hudson for providing a place to express my talents in the Black Renaissance Festival; this event gave me the space to freely express my art and take my talent to a new level.
I wish this piece to deliver strength and perseverance to all who lay eyes on it.
King life Queen soulYour soul is pure goldTrade nothing for it I dare you
Dare to educate yourself Dare to motivate othersDare to loveDare to stand above Dare to be you

Here we thank our many in-kind donors, who give so generously in service to our mission of transforming lives and building community through housing and the arts.
Newburgh is my hometown though I no longer live there. Both my brother and I grew up in Newburgh during
the 1940’s. I worked part time at the Ritz selling tickets during my high school years
and it has a special place in my heart. I’m so happy you are restoring it
and I appreciate all of your efforts and hard work.

This year we were proud and honored to recognize Nancy Layne as Safe Harbors Volunteer of the Year. Nancy started volunteering in 2016 and has quite possibly volunteered for every event Safe Harbors has hosted. From the 5K, to the Gala, to the Community Paint-in, Nancy is a dedicated volunteer who brings her energy, compassion and commitment to our organization and the entire community. For their generous donation of our annual Cornerstone Thanksgiving feast for the past five years, Safe Harbors was delighted to recognize Parkhurst Dining as our In-Kind Donor of the Year. The spread Parkhurst creates for our residents is beautifully prepared and delicious, and their crew makes everything so easy for us! Thank you to all our friends at Parkhurst Dining!
If you are interested in joining our wonderful group of volunteers, please contact Jeanne Traugot at [email protected].
