Anne-Marie Phippard (Head of Sport Development, Netball Australia), and Kath Tetley (Marketing, Media, Community and Legacy, NWC2015) gave thought provok-ing presentations, which were followed by eight breakout groups discussing a wide range of topics.

Commercial

Netball Tasmania continues to enjoy the support of key commercial partners WorkSafe Tasmania and ANZ bank, with accommodation partners Country Club Tasmania and Wrest Point providing an important range of services for the netball community. Attire partner BLK (previously known as Kooga) remains our official uniform supplier, outfitting all our state teams and support staff. Telstra continues to support netball at a national level, which provides financial benefit to Netball Tasmania.

Development

During 2014, Netball Tasmania facilitat-ed and organised 40 courses and work-shops for coaches and officials. A new role of Umpire Coach was established to-wards the end of the year and six umpires were appointed; one in the north-west, two in the north and three in Hobart.

As a consequence of the investment by Australia Post for “One Netball”, a Com-munity Engagement and Legacy Officer was appointed mid-year to be shared by Netball Tasmania and Netball Victoria. The role is primarily to support increased uptake and interest in netball generated by the Netball World Cup in 2015, whilst establishing local connections between community organisations supporting diverse populations and their local associ-ations and clubs.

Since her appointment in August, Zoe Small has worked closely with Shane Fish to identify and develop opportunities for diverse populations throughout Tasmania.

High Performance

The recommendations from the High Performance review conducted in 2013 were implemented in 2014.

Netball Tasmania was delighted to wel-come High Performance Manager Julie Hoornweg to the team in July to lead and develop Netball Tasmania’s High Perfor-mance programs. Julie’s background in elite netball at state, national and inter-national level makes her the ideal person to drive our program and support our athletes and coaches as they strive for national and international recognition.

Governance

Throughout 2014 the Board of Netball Tasmania maintained its strong focus upon governance and strategy, well supported by a talented and hardworking team in the office.

It was very rewarding to receive an award for “Leadership and Innovation” from Netball Australia in 2014 and a demonstration of the confidence that the Tasmanian State Government has for Netball Tasmania through its decision to provide a grant for four years rather than on a year-by-year basis. This enables Net-ball Tasmania to plan for the future with confidence and continue to grow and develop the sport.

At the end of the year we said fare-well and very grateful thanks to Finance Director and Board member John Pugh, whose contribution to Netball Tasmania since 2012 was much appreciated by his colleagues.

On behalf of the Board and staff, I would like to thank the Tasmanian State Government, Events Tasmania, Sport and Recreation Tasmania, WorkSafe Tasma-nia, ANZ, Country Club Tasmania, Wrest Point, our colleagues in Victoria, and the volunteers across Tasmania for working so hard to make netball in Tasmania such a success.

Liz Banks President

President’s ReportIn a year of continued growth and

development, 2014 saw Netball Tasmania take a step forward into the internation-al arena, hosting an exhibition match between the Melbourne Vixens and New Zealand’s Northern Mystics.

This was the first game between two ANZ Championships teams in Tasmania, which was made possible through a grant from Events Tasmania and the support of the Melbourne Vixens/Netball Victoria and Northern Mystics.

This event gave us the opportunity to re-establish a competiton between teams representing Tasmania North and Tasma-nia South, playing a hotly contested game for the Judy Headlam Trophy. The final scores were close with Tasmania North se-curing the trophy (see photo above right).

Netball Tasmania also hosted several activities for coaches and the community around the highpoint of the exhibition match at the Silverdome.

The Board

The work of the Board is focused on strategy and policy to ensure that Netball Tasmania opeates on a sound, sustain-able basis for its future development. Our Strategic Plan has five key result areas that provide a framework for our activities and we have enjoyed significant achievements in each area.

Community

In February members of the netball community were invited to watch the Vixens and the Mystics train at the Silver-dome and to join the teams for breakfast at Country Club Tasmania, with MC Jo Palmer interviewing a panel of athletes and coaches.

In July Netball Tasmania hosted its first conference, “Explore Netball”, with 80 participants from affiliated associations and ANZ State League clubs. Key guest speakers Sarah Courtney MP (see photo above left), Glynis Devereux (President, Southern Tasmanian Netball Association),

CEO’s Report

2014 was another extraordinary year for Netball Tasmania.

In February we hosted the Melbourne Vixens and New Zealand’s Northern Mys-tics to play a pre-season ANZ Champion-ships exhibition match, the first time that teams from Australia and New Zealand have competed against each other in Tasmania.

The match was held at the Silverdome in front of a packed crowd, with an open-ing game between Tasmania North and Tasmania South fiercely contested from start to finish. Both teams took the lead at times, with Tasmania North taking the Judy Headlam trophy at the end of the game.

In association with the main event, athletes, coaches, officials and VIP guests enjoyed a great breakfast event at Coun-try Club, with MC Jo Palmer and a panel of athletes and coaches from the Mystics and Vixens.

A highlight for the community was the opportunity to watch the Vixens and Mystics train and for our coaches, a special Coaching Extravaganza with Nicole Rich-ardson and Eloise Southby proved to be very popular.

Netball Tasmania would like to thank ANZ bank for its support and especially Katrina Pedersen and Carolyn Ranson, whose enthusiasm made such a great contribution to the success of this won-derful event.

Following on from this event, ANZ bank became the new naming rights sponsor for the State League (2015-17), the first state netball League in Australia to be sponsored by ANZ. This significant achievement was more than two years in development and again, my thanks to Katrina Pedersen and Carolyn Ranson for being such amazing champions for netball.

I would also like to take a moment to mention and thank the previous sponsor of the State League, Aurora Energy, whose support for 15 years made the partnership one of the most successful in Tasmanian sport.

Another significant landmark for netball in Tasmania occurred in Septem-ber 2014, when the State Government approved an annual grant to Netball Tasmania for a period of four years, thus enabling Netball Tasmania to develop effective long-term forward planning.

The State Government also provided a grant through Events Tasmania to assist Netball Tasmania in hosting two countries in Tasmania for the pre Netball World Cup 2015 preparation. As with the ANZ Championships project, this will not only provide Tasmanians with an opportunity to watch world class netball, but will offer numerous opportunities to children and their families to engage in a wide range of sport, social and cultural activities.

In July, Netball Tasmania held its first conference where associations, ANZ State League clubs, coaches, officials, volunteers and staff, gathered to enjoy presentations and engage in break out groups arranged by area of interest. Feedback from the post-event survey was extremely positive and will help to keep the conference relevant and enjoyable for participants.

The partnership with WorkSafe Tasma-nia continues to flourish and provides a wide range of benefits to the community. In addition to the Safety in the Workplace presentations given around the state, the WorkSafe Tasmania sponsorship has directly funded the following projects:

Circular Head Netball Association: a coaching course to support the associ-ation in upskilling and training umpires. This was identified as a critical need due to lack of qualified umpires in the region.

St Helens Netball Association: purchase of new uniforms for junior teams compet-ing in the Kingborough Netball Carnival.

Northern Tasmanian Netball Associ-ation: support for the junior leadership program, which includes coaching and umpiring qualifications and as well as leadership and mentoring training. The grant enabled three girls from each of NTNA’s member clubs to develop as individuals off the court, including first aid training.

Meander Valley Netball Association: the grant enabled MVNA to purchase equip-ment for the establishment of a winter competition, including netballs, bibs and goal post padding.

Kingborough Netball Association: the grant enabled KNA to offer a reduction in the cost for junior participants to travel to and compete in the Devon Netball Carni-val held on north-west coast.

Southern Tasmanian Netball Associa-tion: Project One showed coaches how to use progression. Two sessions of one and a half hours each were conducted by highly qualified coaches to improve the knowledge base of club coaches.

Project two was an Introduction to First Aid (two sessions of one and a half hours each) for 12 members of the STNA Junior Leadership Program.

Netball Tasmania and its affiliated members would like to thank WorkSafe Tasmania for its very welcome and much needed support.

With financial support from Netball Australia, during 2014 we instructed sport specialist lawyers Lander & Rogers to un-dertake a review of all Netball Tasmania’s existing policies and to draft new policies to address any gaps. Acting on the rec-ommendation of Lander & Rogers, at the conclusion of the review all policies were re-framed and adopted as By-Laws.

During 2013 an extensive review was undertaken of Netball Tasmania’s high performance pathway. The recommenda-tions from the review were implemented in 2014, with the following key mile-stones:

» Appointment of Julie Hoornweg as Netball Tasmania’s High Performance Manager. Since her appointment Julie has been building the infrastructure that Tasmania needs to support its athletes to reach the highest level. The response from the netball community to Julie’s work has been extremely positive and she continues to develop elite processes and practices to support our coaches and athletes.

» Creation of a State Selection Commit-tee, with clear processes documented within the By-Laws.

» Associations nominate Talent Scouts to advise the Chair of the Selection Commit-tee of any children identified as having potential to become state and national athletes.

» Review of the ANZ State League to (a) support young athlete development and opportunities for entry into higher levels of competition; and (b) provide devel-opment opportunities for coaches and officials.

Our State teams competed in the 2014 national championships at 17U, 19U and Open level, and in the School Sport Aus-tralia competition for the 15U age group. Once again, the hard work of our volunteer coaches, team managers, and physiother-apists played an important role in these activities and I would like to acknowledge the many hours that they devote to netball and the players in their care.

Joshua Bowring demonstrated his world-class abilities again in 2014, being appointed to officiate at the Common-wealth Games in Glasgow. Josh is a tre-mendous ambassador for netball and for Tasmania and well-deserves the acclaim of his peers and the netball community.

The incredible support given by the parents of the players is hugely important to our ability to participate in national competitions and I would like to thank them all for their very important contri-bution to the continuance of our High Performance program.

Netball Tasmania continues to enjoy a close relationship with staff at Netball Australia, the Tasmanian Institute of Sport, and Sport and Recreation Tasmania. I would like to acknowledge the wonder-ful assistance that we receive from these organisations and in particular, to ask Kate Palmer, Paul Austen and Craig Martin to pass on our thanks to all their staff members.

The success of the game hosted in Tasmania between the Melbourne Vixens and Auckland Northern Mystics would not have been possible without the tremendous support provided by Netball Victoria, the Melbourne Vixens, and the Northern Mystics. In particular, I would like to acknowledge and thank the staff team from Netball Victoria who worked so closely with the staff and volunteers of Netball Tasmania to ensure that this inaugural event went without a hitch.

I would like to take this opportunity to recognise the effort, passion and com-mitment of the Board and staff of Netball Tasmania. The staff team is responsible for developing, managing, delivering and evaluating every Netball Tasmania program and service and providing sup-

port for netball at every level throughout Tasmania. The hard work of this small, but dedicated, team is one of the reasons that Netball Tasmania has enjoyed another significant year of success and growth.

I would also like to mention and thank the many volunteers throughout Tasma-nia who work tirelessly to support their clubs and associations, as well as working in partnership with Netball Tasmania. The sport of netball would not happen with-out them and their efforts and commit-ment are much appreciated.

I would like to thank the Premier of Tasmania and Minister for Sport, the Hon Will Hodgman MP, his colleagues and their staff teams for their wonderful support to netball throughout 2014. It

is very rewarding to know that netball is acknowledged and highly valued by our State Government.

They are mentioned indivdually else-where in this report but I would like to say a huge thank you to our commercial partners and supporters, whose support for netball is so critical to the services and programs that we provide.

In reflecting on a second consecutive year of significant growth and achieve-ment for Netball Tasmania, it is exciting to consider where 2015 and beyond will take us.

ANZ State League 2014

In 2014, the Tasmanian State Netball League became the first in Australia to be sponsored by ANZ. This exciting achievement was made possible through the hard work and persistance of several people and in particular, Katrina Pedersen and Carolyn Ranson, whose enthusiasm was instrumental in making the partner-ship a reality.

There could not have been a better inaugural season for the new ANZ State League, with thrilling home and away games over 21 rounds, followed by a won-derful display of top quality netball during the finals series and the Grand Final.

In a thrilling Grand Final at Aurora Sports Stadium, Cripps Waratah won the Premiership in front of an enthusiastic home crowd beating AYC-Friends Lexus Arrows 46 to 38. Player of the Match was awarded to Adrianna Gough.

In the 19 and under Grand Final, Cripps Waratah was defeated by the season’s stand out side, Country Club Cavaliers, with the final score line 46 to 31. Cavaliers Captain Dana Lester was awarded Player of the Match.

Netball Tasmania would like to thank the Umpire Allocation Committee and the umpires who officiated throughout the season. The work of the bench officials, supplied by all the licence holder clubs, is much appreciated and the many volun-teers who work so hard to support their clubs and the ANZ State League.

ANZ NetSetGO is the first step of the player development pathway. It was de-signed to provide children aged five to 10 years with the best possible learning and playing experience that enables them to develop a positive introduction to netball, ensuring enjoyment and continued par-ticipation within the sport.

ANZ NetSetGO incorporates the mod-ified junior programs. Five to seven year olds learn related fundamental motor skills with fun, music, dance and games. Eight to 10 year olds are part of modified games with a focus on fun and teamwork. The programs are coordinated and deliv-ered by accredited coaches to ensure a safe, quality experience for all children.

The program is designed to comple-ment the existing netball infrastructure by providing the wider netball community with quality resources and equipment to deliver an age and skill appropriate netball program, which leads into club participation and development pathways into state and national representation.

ANZ NetSetGO has developed a solid base in Tasmania from which it can grow as the program continues to reach all corners of the state. Promotions have included brochures, advertising and newsletter.

In 2014, Netball Tasmania introduced two ANZ NetSetGo Inclusion options. The first was full program of eight weeks, the other a shortened program of one to four weeks. In this inaugural year, 46 children completed the full program and 40 chil-dren completed the shorter program.

Netball Tasmania also ran a number of junior clinics with 708 children participat-ing, plus a skills program for a further 147 secondary school participants.

Tassie Hawks Netball Shield

2014 saw the Tassie Hawks Netball Shield return for the sixth year and was once again conducted in partnership with Hawthorn Football Club.

The first and second placed netball teams from the schools competitions in the South, North and North West earned the right to play in the Tassie Hawks Net-ball Shield. Each regional winning school received a shield.

Six teams travel to Launceston for the final series on Tuesday 16th September 2014 at the Silverdome.

Netball Tasmania’s Develop A Diamond Academy program was successfully con-ducted again in 2014, targeting players 14 to 15 years of age.

The program provided regional train-ing opportunities for players and coaches to gain experience to further their skills in all areas of the sport, including techni-cal and tactical, physical and well-being components.

Selections for 2014 were held in Oc-tober/November 2013 and the program commenced in February 2015. Eight regionally based squads were selected and a total of 112 athletes participated in the activities in 2014.

Coles Netball Schools Ambassador Program

Netball Australia Coles Netball School Ambassador Program was established to encourage a relationship between schools and netball’s state member organisations to develop and promote netball in and out of the classroom.

The program also aims to ensure that netball has a continuous presence in schools and ultimately becomes the sport of choice for many students, in particular girls.

The Coles Netball Schools Ambassador Program will ensure that school commu-nities, via their registered ambassadors, have access to all high quality netball programs and information about partici-pation programs, coaching and officiating courses, and special events.

This program provides a range of quali-ty material to support teachers in deliver-ing a fun, safe, enjoyable netball experi-ence for their students. The program and materials are provided by Netball Austra-lia at no cost to schools or children.

The 2014 Develop A Diamond Acad-emy competition was held at the Silver-dome in Launceston on Sunday 27th April 2014. A squad of 32 players was selected from the competition and players invited to attend the 15U Phase Two Camp on the 17th and 18th May 2014, where the Tasma-nian 15U Schoolgirls Team was selected.

As well as providing a pathway for play-ers, the Develop a Diamond competition provides an opportunity for young offi-cials to be coached by the state Umpire Coaches and gain practical experience.

The Develop A Diamond Academy squads each included two reserves to provide more development opportunities for our junior athletes. With a number of them being needed to replace injured or withdrawn team members, this proved to be a good initiative for the program.

Cape Barren Island

Netball Tasmania worked on establish-ing a long-term relationship with Cape Barren Island in 2014 with the aim to have more netball games, activities and resources on the island. Netball Tasmania is working with Cape Barren Island School to source grants to help fund teachers and students to visit Flinders Island or the mainland to compete against other schools and clubs.

Flinders Island

In 2014, Netball Tasmania worked closely with Flinders Island District School and Flinders Island Aboriginal Association Incorporated to help support the growth of netball on the island. Netball Tasmania has been working with representatives from the island to plan coaching and um-piring courses, establish NetSetGO cen-tres, and assist with grants applications.

One NetballNetball Australia has identified a need

to make the game of netball more accessi-ble to the diverse needs of Australia’s population. One Netball delivers targeted programs at a grass roots level to provide opportunities for individuals and commu-nities to experience netball in a safe, in-clusive and fun environment. In addition local clubs and associations are engaged to establish connections between the netball community and new participants to encourage long term involvement in the sport.

Hobart Migrant Resource Centre

To support the One Netball program, Netball Tasmania has established a relationship with the Hobart Migrant Resource Centre. Netball Tasmania ran the Australia Post One Netball clinic in conjunction with the HMRC and have continued to work together to establish a stronger partnership reaching more participants in the area.

Aboriginal Sport and Recreation

In 2014, Netball Tasmania developed a strong relationship with Aboriginal Sport and Recreation, which has been crucial in reaching Aboriginal communities across Tasmania. Netball Tasmania identified Indigenous groups as a population to target throughout 2014, and as a result of the partnership with Aboriginal Sport and Recreation, have reached such commu-nities through coaching and umpiring courses, new NetSetGO centres, and providing much needed resources and equipment to help grow netball.

Umpire DevelopmentDuring 2014 Netball Tasmania was

able to provide significant growth and development opportunities for umpires.

Although the number of umpires ac-credited was lower than in previous years, there was an increase in the number of participants attending umpire courses, workshops and activities.

Sixteen junior umpires were selected following their performance during the Develop a Diamond Competiition to join the talent identification program, which provides for them to be mentored by Tas-mania’s most experienced umpire coaches.

Zoe Wickham and Ruth Davies offici-ated at the 17U and 19U National Cham-pionships where Ruth umpired the 17U Final and Zoe the playoff for three/four in the 19U. Following this excellent perfor-mance they were selected to be two of the six umpires for the national Develop-ing Umpires program.

Netball Tasmania also worked with Netball South Australia to send two of Tasmania’s State League umpires, Teresa Berry and James Adams, to Adelaide to officiate in the South Australian State Netball League. The program has received strong support and encouragement and Netball Tasmania will continue to support the program in 2015.

A highlight of the year was the ap-pointment of Joshua Bowring, Tasmania’s only IUA accredited umpire, to officiate at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Josh is a member of the ANZ Champi-onships pool and this appointment was recognition of his excellent performance at top level umpiring.

2014 also saw the development and im-plementation of a number of new projects designed to provide more opportunities for umpires to be identified and supported throughout their umpire careers.

One key new initiative was the estab-lishment of an official “Umpire Coach” role, which was widely advertised and result-ed in the appointment of Marj Kerslake, Rachel Stebbings, Narelle Cameron, Josh Bowring, John Fox and Joel Owen.

Coach Development2014 was a very good year for coach

development in Tasmania and we would like to express our thanks to Julie Hoornweg, Jon Fletcher, Eloise Southby, Nicole Richardson and Debra Armstrong for their support in working with Tasmania’s coaches.

Nicole Richardson and Eloise South-by hosted the Coaching Extravaganza at the Silverdome during the Mystics vs Vixens match earlier in 2014 . This initia-tive proved to be very popular, with 50 coaches attending the day. Feedback was extremely positve and other similar op-portunities will be organised in the future.

Netball Tasmania was delighted to welcome Julie Hoornweg to Netball Tasmania’s staff team in July 2014 as High Performance Manager. Julie’s extensive knowledge and experience of high performance athletes and coaching has strengthened our elite programs and pro-vided effective support to our ANZ State League and State Team coaches.

In September Netball Tasmania organised a Coaching Presenters course, the first to be held for several years. Six coaches attended: Kellie Tahiri, Shane Fish, Danielle Carstens, Ruth Tuohy, Narelle Cameron and Carolyn Kirkpatrick. All six passed the course with Kellie being re-ac-credited and the others accredited as new presenters.

Tasmania made history in 2014 by hosting two rounds (rounds one and four) of the Australian Netball League.

Having two rounds in Tasmania was a great opportunity for our athletes, coaches, umpires and bench officials to be seen in their home state as well as showcasing the competition that bridges the gap between State League competitions from all across Australia and the ANZ Championships.

Round one on July 5th and 6th saw Tassie Spirit take on the Canberra Darters and Southern Force at the Silverdome in Launceston in what was a very well supported top quality match.

This was followed in round four when Tassie Spirit met Victorian Flames on July 27th at Aurora Sports Stadium, Hobart.

Hosting these events would not have been so successful without the support of all of the volunteers that worked so hard during these two rounds. Netball Tasmania would particularly like to thank the Northern Tasmanian Netball Association and the Southern Tasmanian Netball Association for helping to source volunteers for key roles.

Both events were very well supported with spectators and Netball Tasmania is very keen to see what the 2015 season will bring.

Tassie SpiritThe Tassie Spirit team performed

strongly in the 2014 Australian Netball League, equaling the previous best effort by winning three games.

Games were played in Launceston, Canberra, Sydney and Darwin with the highlights being the victories against ACT Darters 52 to 38, NSW Blues 48 to 47, and NT Storm 48 to 29.

All members of the 15-athlete squad took the court at various stages through-out the League with five athletes taking the court in every game and four athletes taking the court in seven or more games.

The option to spread the load amongst 15 athletes highlighted the sound depth of talent within the squad and is a prom-ising indicator for the future of Tasmanian netball

15/U State Team

The team this year travelled to the State Netball and Hockey centre in Melbourne to compete against the other states and territories.

All players gained valuable experience in the lead up to training, travelling and playing at a national competition.

The competition was a success and an enjoyable experience for all involved. Unfortunately several athletes were bedridden or injured, but the team con-tinue to work hard and show courage by competing to the best of their abilities in all games.

The team had a good balance of experience and youth with three athletes returning for their second year and two available for selection in 2015.

The ‘Amy Safe Award’ for Tasmania, as voted by all opposition players at the con-clusion of each roster match was awarded to Renee Terry.

We continually came up against bigger, stronger athletes and have to play well above our capacity to match it with them. We need to develop Tasmanian athletes to match the other teams for size and strength and adjust t the way we play our game. If we can do this, there is nothing to stop Tasmania putting pressure on the more fancied states and consistently achieve top four ranking.

17/U State TeamThe 17/U National Championship, held

at Waverley Netball Centre in Melbourne, was a challenging and rewarding experi-ence for all involved.

The athletes maintained their effort and intensity throughout the champion-ship, often coming up against physically stronger and taller opponents. Our ath-letes were competitive in most games and always showed a spirit that allowed them to push other teams to their limit.

Close losses to Western Australia and South Australia and a disappointing effort against the ACT saw Tasmania end the championships in seventh place, beating Northern Territory in the playoff.

19/U State TeamThe 19/U State team finished in sixth

place, winning two out of seven games during the round robin competition (ACT and Northern Territory) and winning the first final against Northern Territory.

2014 was a young team with only two players returning for their second year in the age group. The team performed reasonably well after a couple of games to fully adapt to the intensity and strength of competition. Often the athletes were able to match teams well until half time.

The need for two imports in the same positional area and the ability for them to only be brought to Tasmania on two occasions to train made developing and embedding defensive structures and team cohesion difficult.

24

Due to injuries/sickness and availabil-ity, the team did not train as a full squad until arriving in Melbourne. The withdraw-al of one of the team’s strongest athletes due to injury late in preparation and the requirement for a new player to be offered a position with two trainings to go impacted on the strength and versatility of the centre court structures and drive into attack.

The presence of a mentor coach was really beneficial. The ability to seek com-ment and share ideas with the mentor coach assisted me greatly with decision making.

The availability of coded video anal-ysis was very helpful and welcomed. A big thank you to Alanna who was more than willing to try and pull out whichever combination of data I asked for, and do it as quickly as possible.

Netball Tasmania Talent Development Pathway Program

A Continuum of Talent Development

The Netball Tasmania Talent Develop-ment Pathway Program aims to identify, motivate and develop talented young Tas-manian netballers who display the ability or potential to succeed at state, national and international levels.

The Program provides a structured continuum of development opportunities for aspiring young netballers, from the age of 14 through to early adulthood, to progressively develop and master the playing skills, training experiences and qualities of resilience needed to succeed at the elite level.

The integrated connection of the stag-es of the Program will overcome current gaps in Netball in Tasmania’s talent iden-tification and talented athlete develop-ment, training and support, to allow our best young athletes to progressively and sequentially fulfill their potential.

The talent identification, support and recognition aspects of this Program are an important strategy in addressing the growing tendency for girls to drop out of netball, and sport generally, in their teens and in early adulthood.

Development Pathway Program Stages

The Talent Development Pathway Pro-gram involves three entry levels:

» Potential Athlete Program: athletes aged 14 to 17 years of age

» Netball Tasmania Emerging Talent Pro-gram: athletes aged 14 to 18 years of age

» Tasmanian Institute of Sport (Netball Elite Development Program): athletes aged 15 to 19 years of age

Potential Athlete Program

This early stage program targets young athletes aged 14 to 16 identified as rising junior athletes who demonstrate the potential for future involvement in the Emerging Talent Program.

Identified athletes are provided with op-portunities to participate in selected region-al training sessions and activities provided through three Centres of Excellence.

The participation opportunities will provide appropriate, early stage expo-sure to high quality training, guidance and experiences appropriate to the age and development level of these junior athletes.

The Program will help to build junior athlete aspirations for elite netball oppor-tunities and assist the athletes to make the transition to a more structured talent development program.

The participation of junior potential athletes also contributes to ‘critical mass’ and wider training activities for the re-gional Centre of Excellence programs.

Netball Tasmania Emerging Talent Program

The Emerging Talent Program aims to develop the skills of aspiring young Tasmanian athletes aged 14 to 18 years of age who are identified as potential elite athletes of the future.

The Program helps to ensure Tasmania develops an increasingly stronger pool of athletes with the necessary skills and personal qualities to compete successfully at state, national and international levels.

Selected athletes are supported to de-velop their netball skills and performance capabilities to effectively equip them for the demands of elite netball at state level in Tasmania and within the national pathway.

The Program underpins and feeds into the TIS Netball Elite Development Program and provides an important Tasmanian link to Netball Australia’s high performance objectives and program.

The Emerging Talent Program operates through the three regional Centres of Excellence in the South, North and North West of Tasmania. Regional sessions are held on week days for up to two hours du-ration under the supervision of appointed regional coaches.

Program participants include regional TIS athletes in the weekly training sessions and they also participate in the monthly TIS training sessions conducted on weekends in either Hobart or Launceston under the supervision of the Tasmanian High Perfor-mance Manager/Head TIS coach.

Tasmanian Institute of Sport (TIS) [Netball Elite Development Program]

The TIS program identifies and de-velops Tasmanian netball athletes who have the potential for selection in Netball Australia’s Elite Programs.

The program provides individual, small group and group coaching assis-tance to scholarship holders, access to sports science, strength and conditioning and athlete career and education services.  The TIS also provides individual feedback through use of technology and compe-tition against other institutes and state academies.

Selection into the TIS Netball Program is performance-based with selectors from Netball Australia, Netball Tasmania and the TIS Netball coach comprising the panel.

To be eligible for a TIS scholarship the athletes must have achieved at least one of the following performance benchmarks and be ratified and endorsed by Netball Australia

» Selection in a national team

» Selection to attend a ational alent camp

» An athlete who has a strong perfor-mance at a National Championship

» Strong performances and progres-sion through club, Centres of Excellence, regional and state competitions.

A New Selection Process

Four Statewide selectors were appointed in 2014 with the responsibility to view ath-letes who are participating in State League games , State team and selections, and participating at re gional and club level.

Recommendations in consultation with State coaches and State League coaches will be made for the selection of all of the state teams representing Tasmania at national Championships.

One of the key outcomes of this system will be the growing interest in and growth of representation of athletes wanting to stand for state teams

Coach Development Pathway Programs

Another key area for the High Perfor-mance program was to establish a pool of high performance coaches working in the Tasmanian system. Netball Tasmania is committed to progressing and upskill-ing coaches across the state, providing opportunities for all coaches to continue along the national pathway.

Some of the activities offered around this goal have been the support and men-toring being offered to all State League clubs :

» Pre season planning » Club selection process support » Bench support » Training session conduct and advice » Three High Performance coaches » 10 Advanced coaches » 15 Intermediate coaches

There is also a number of Intermediate coaches working towards an Advanced lev-el and we will continue to explore national programs and opportunities for our coaches to ensure that Tasmanian athletes have access to highly trained and skilled coaches.

Media Coverage

Netball Tasmania enjoyed an excellent year in exposure in both traditional and new media, experiencing significant growth on both fronts.

The ANZ State League along with other major announcements about the sport were well covered and reported. The growing nature of this coverage reflects the increased profile of the sport in the state and represents both the media and public interest in netball.

The increased mentions of Netball Tasmania, league sponsor ANZ, individual ANZ State League clubs and sponsors helps to build the value of the sport, the league and organisational brand as well as the value of clubs to potential sponsors.

Significant achievements/figures

» 108 articles appeared in the Tasmanian press during the 2014 ANZ State League Season (February to July 2014), a 25% in-crease on 2013 figures. Not only was there an increase in frequency but an increase in column space, sponsor mentions, team sponsor mentioned, league sponsor and club sponsor images.

Commercial and Communication

Commercial

Netball Tasmania would like to ac-knowledge its commercial partners and supporters and thank them for their important contribution to the success of netball in Tasmania.

The State Government of Tasmania provides a significant amount of funding to Netball Tasmania, which supports our wide range of development programs and the high performance pathway. In particular, Netball Tasmania would like to thank the State Government for changing its funding agreement in 2014 from an an-nual application, to a four-year grant. This enables Netball Tasmania to plan more effectively and align activities against the strategic plan with confidence.

Netball Australia provides a wide range of support, including annual grants to promote participation and services, development of national products and services, and ongoing support from staff members to the staff team in Tasmania.

The partnership with WorkSafe Tasma-nia continued to grow in 2014, bring-ing many direct benefits to the netball community. In addition to educational activities throughout the state, WorkSafe staff also attended “Explore Netball” to promote health and safety and will con-tinue to work with the netball community to strengthen the message.

In 2014, Netball Tasmania’s State League became the first in Australia to be sponsored by ANZ. This exciting devel-opment brought numerous benefits to Netball Tasmania and the netball commu-nity, with many exciting developments planned for the future.

Netball Tasmania would also like to acknowledge and thank Telstra for its national sponsorship, and Wrest Point and Country Club Tasmania, our official accommodation partners. Bodysystem continues to provide physiotherapy ser-vice support, for which many thanks.

A special thanks to the individuals and companies who provided gifts for the “spot prizes” at the 2014 ANZ State League Presentation Dinner: Pennicott Wilderness Journeys, Eloise Southby Coaching Clinic, Netball World Cup, DV Milk, Pyengana Dairy, K&D Warehouse, Langford Sales and Marketing, and Sonia Strong.

NOTE 1: SUMMARY OF SIGNIFICANT ACCOUNTING POLICIES

a) Basis of Accounting

This financial report is a special purpose financial report prepared in order to satisfy the financial reporting requirements of the Associations Incorporation Act (Tas). The Board has determined that the Association is not a reporting entity.

The financial report has been prepared on an accruals basis and is based on historical costs and does not take into ac-count changing money values or, except where specifically stated, current valuations of non-current assets.

The following significant accounting policies, which are consistent with the previous period unless otherwise stated, have been adopted in the preparation of this financial report.

b) Income Tax

The Association is exempt from the payment of income tax under section 50-45 of the Income Tax Assessment Act (1997).

c) Trade and Other Receivables

Trade and other receivables include all amounts due from services in the ordinary course of business. All trade and other receivables are expected to be received within 12 months and are therefore classified as current assets.

d) Plant and Equipment

Plant and equipment is carried at cost less, where applicable, any accumulated depreciation.

The depreciable amount of all plant and equipment is depreciated over the useful lives of the assets to the Association commencing from the time the asset is held ready for use.

e) Trade and Other Payables

Trade and other payables represent the liability outstanding at the end of the reporting period for goods and services received by the Company during the reporting period that remain unpaid. The balance is recognised as a current liability with the amounts normally paid within 30 days of recognition of the liability.

f) Impairment of Assets

At the end of each reporting period, the entity reviews the carrying amounts of its tangible assets to determine whether there is any indication that those assets have been impaired. If such an indication exists, the recoverable amount of the asset, being the higher of the asset’s fair vale less costs to sell and value in use, is compared to the asset’s carrying amount. Any excess of the asset’s carrying amount over its recoverable amount is recognised in the income and expenditure statement.

g) Employee Benefits

Provision is made for the Association’s liability for employee benefits arising from services rendered by employees to the end of the reporting period. Employee benefits have been measured at the amounts expected to be paid when the liability is settled.

Tasmanian Netball Association IncorporatedABN 62 028 131 759Notes to the financial statementsFor the period ended 31 December 2014

32

NOTE 1: SUMMARY OF SIGNIFICANT ACCOUNTING POLICIES Cont.

h) Employee Provisions

Provisions are recognised when the association has a legal or constructive obligation, as a result of past events, for which it is probable that an outflow of economic benefits will result and that outflow can be reliably measured. Provisions are measured at the best estimate of the amounts required to settle the obligation at the end of the reporting period.

i) Cash and Cash Equivalents

Cash and cash equivalents include cash on hand, deposits held at call with banks, and other short-term highly liquid investments.

j) Revenue and Other Income

Revenue is measured at the fair value of the consideration received or receivable. For this purpose, deferred consideration is not discounted to present values when recognising revenue.

Interest revenue is recognised as it accrues.

Grant and donation income is recognised when the entity obtains control over the funds, which is generally at the time of receipt.

All revenue is stated net of the amount of goods and services tax (GST).

k) Goods and Services Tax (GST)

Revenues, expenses and assets are recognised net of the amount of GST, except where the amount of GST incurred is not recoverable from the Australian Taxation Office (ATO). Receivables and payables are stated inclusive of the amount of GST recoverable or payable.
