Ruidoso Valley Noon Lions Club

1 July 2004 Fellow Lions: The intent of this Annual Report is to present a detailed accounting of what the Ruidoso Valley Noon Lions Club achieved during the 2003-04 year (i.e., 1 July 2003 through 30 June 2004). Results are provided both for the Club as a whole and as Lions individually.

The Club should be quite proud of a great year. As shown in the table below, members worked 26.7% more hours on fund raisers than last year resulting in a 27.3% increase in funds raised. The results for service projects (i.e., hours worked and funds expended/donated) in 2003-04 were similar to those in 2002-03. However, the additional funds carried over (i.e., funds raised minus funds expended/donated) will allow us to do even more in 2004-05. In addition, the Club hosted what many folks are calling the finest NM State Lions Convention ever.

Year Funds Raised Fund Raiser Hours Worked

Funds Expended/ Donated

Service Project Hours Worked

2002-03 $22,130 1961 $22,130 1111

2003-04 $28,175 2484 $22,220 1122

In 2002-03, data based on the Annual Club Activity Reports from all Clubs in LCI showed that on the average, a Club expended/donated $14,577 for community service projects while working 1420 hours. In comparison, during the 2003-04 year, the Ruidoso Valley Noon Lions expended/donated $20,920 while working 3606 hours.

Background In the late '60's, Lion Elmer Pirelli, who was a long time member of the Ruidoso Village Council and the Ruidoso Evening Lions Club, decided to start a new Lions Club in Ruidoso that met at noon. As a result of his recruiting efforts, the Ruidoso Valley Noon Lions Club was chartered 26 November 1969 with 54 Charter Members. The Club's first President was Elmer Pirelli. From 1969 to 1988, the Club met at the Whispering Pines Restaurant in the Upper Canyon, after which they moved to the Ruidoso Inn for meetings. Today, the Club meets at the Cree Meadows Restaurant. In the early years, the sponsorship of the Mule Races at Ruidoso Downs and Friday Night Bingo were the big fund raisers. Student scholarships and holding bingo sessions at the Care Center were two of the Club's many community service projects. Today, the Ruidoso Valley Noon Lions are the second largest Club in NM. The Club’s membership has stayed above 55 for the last several years and the prospects are excellent of growing the membership in the near future as more and more people in the community become cognizant of what Lionism is all about. The Club’s big fund raisers are the annual Gun and Collectible show each May and the annual Antique Show each August. The primary community service projects are providing eye exams and glasses for folks in need and the photo eye screening of youngsters in Lincoln County.

Meeting Attendance Performance (Cont’d.)

[1] Club Activity Points: 1 point for every 3 hours participating in a Club event (e.g., fund raiser, service project, etc.) [2] There were 51 Noon Meetings. If total points are > 51, Lion achieved 100% Attendance.

A Special Thanks to Lion Jim Burrow for taking role at all meetings.

Meeting Attendance Performance Member attendance at Noon and Board Meetings is critical if a Lions Club is going to be productive and successful in its endeavors to serve their community. While meetings are intended to provide the forum to deal with the business of the Club, they should also be interesting and as brief as possible. Lion President Tom Pugh has done a great job this year in keeping the length of the Noon Meetings to less than one hour while completing all intended Club business at hand. In addition, Lion 1st VP Mark Jones, Program Director, has coordinated and scheduled many interesting and informative programs which have resulted in better attendance by members. Each year, Lions who achieve 100% Attendance are awarded an attractive pin for their vest signifying that accomplishment. An allowance is made such that missed meetings can be made up by other involvement (e.g., attending meetings of other Clubs, attending Club Board meetings, participating in Club fund raisers and community service projects, etc.). The total hours spent by Club members for fund raisers and community service projects were tabulated and one activity point was awarded for every three hours (e.g., 63 hours would result in 21 points). The activity points were added to the number of Noon and Board Meetings attended and if the result is greater than or equal to 51 (i.e., the total number of Noon Meetings during 2003-04), the member will be awarded a 100% Attendance pin. The ten best Noon Meeting attendance records were achieved by: Jim Burrow (49), Bryson McCool (49), Kitty Callender (48), Mark Jones (46), Bill Allen (44), Leo Mitchell (44), Jack Menendez (40), Tom Pugh (40), Carlton Davies (39), Larry Woods (39).

Membership/Retention

Membership is the lifeline of any Lions Club. Recruiting new members, as well as retaining current members, is necessary if the effectiveness of the Club is to remain high. If membership is allowed to wane, the Club’s potential to conduct community service projects, as well as raising funds for those community service projects, will decrease resulting in the Club becoming less effective. The Club lost ground this year with respect to membership. While eight new Lions were recruited, 12 Lions were dropped resulting in a net loss of four. Eleven of the 12 members were dropped for reasons beyond the control of the Club, i.e., Lion moves, Lion dies, or Lion cannot participate due to business or personal reasons. Only one Lion was dropped due to non-attendance and non-payment of dues. Lions Kitty Callender, Jack Pruitt, Valari Chavez, Bob Callender, Tom Pugh, and Gary Henry are to be commended for sponsoring new Lions this year.

Fund Raisers/Other Income

Bridge Tournament Lion Leo Mitchell arranged and directed the Club's food concession during the 18-20 July 2003 Bridge Tournament that was held at the Ruidoso Convention Center. On 18-19 July, Lions Carole Boddin, Jim Burrow, and B. J. Welch assembled and sold sandwich plates and drinks to the bridge contestants. On 20 July, 200 delicious taco plates (600 tacos) were prepared for the hungry players. Lions who worked on Sunday were Jim Burrow, Carole Boddin, Bob Callender, Kitty Callender, Bryson McCool, Leon Noack, Ole Olson, Tom Payne, Larry Woods, and Bill Wooley. The Club netted $1278 from this fund raiser. Outdoor Expo The first Mountain Living Hunting and Fishing Outdoor Expo occurred 15-17 August 2003 at the Ruidoso Convention Center. Lion Kitty Callender planned and directed the Club's food concession during this event. Due to a light turn out and not being reimbursed for providing food for vendors and security personnel, the Club only netted about $600. In spite of the poor return, Lion Kitty and Club members gave it their best shot. Lions who participated were Bill Allen, Don Blair (and his wife Betty), Jim Burrow, Bob Callender, Kitty Callender, Carlton Davies, Tony Hoffman, Mark Jones, Ray Lawrence, Bryson McCool, Fran Menendez, Jack Menendez, Leo Mitchell, Ole Olson, Jack Pruitt, Tom Pugh, John Sims, B. J. Welch, Jim Welch, and Larry Woods. Lion Duane Brocius (PDG) from Albuquerque also helped out. Antique Show The Club, in conjunction with Ameriwest Shows, sponsored its annual Antiques Show and Sale at the Convention Center on 22-24 August 2003. Lion Bill Allen headed up the planning of the Show and coordinating with the vendors. Lion Kitty Callender planned and directed the food concession. Lions, under the direction of Lion Bill Wooley, sold tickets throughout Ruidoso weeks before the show and at the door. Lions also participated in running the food concession where hot dogs, chili dogs, sausages, green chile stew, chicken salad, nachos, home-made desserts, popcorn, and an assortment of drinks were served. A group of Lions, under the direction of Lion Master Chef Bill Allen, provided a cowboy-style breakfast on Sunday morning for the Ameriwest folks and the venders which turned out to be a fabulous experience, especially for the "city slickers". The Ameriwest folks provided a picnic dinner for the vendors and Club members on Saturday evening. Both events occurred at the Cedar Creek Campground. The Club netted approximately $6600. Lions who participated were: Bill Allen, Jim Burrow, Bob Callender, Kitty Callender, Morris Chambless, Dick Cottrill, Carlton Davies, Carol Hettenbach, Tony Hoffman, Mark Jones, Bob Lanik, Ray Lawrence, Bryson McCool, Dale McLaughlin, Fran Menendez, Jack Menendez, Leo Mitchell, Leon Noack, Ole Olson, Tom Payne, Tom Pugh, BJ Welch, Jim Welch, Larry Woods, and Bill Wooley.

WalMart Grant Lion 1st VP Mark Jones proposed and coordinated the application with WalMart for a special $750 grant to assist the Club’s many community service projects. The grant was approved September 2003.

Art In The Orchard On 6 September 2003, members of the Club set up our tent and food concession at the Art in the Orchard that took place near an orchard outside of Lincoln. Lion Kitty Callender planned and directed the fund raiser which netted $359. The Club's barbecue, which was donated by Lion Don Blair and his wife, Betty, was fired up and hamburgers and hot dogs were grilled and sold to the hungry attendees. We also sold chips and drinks. Lions who served were: Don Blair (and his wife Betty), Carole Boddin, Bob Callender, Kitty Callender, Mary Lou Gilbreath, Tony Hoffman, Bryson McCool, and B. J. Welch.

Thriftway Hot Dog Stand The Manager of Thriftway Food Store asked the Club if they would be interested in selling hot dogs and drinks out of the store's trailer stand in the parking lot as a promotional event. The Club decided that it was a good way to make a few bucks and so we complied. On 12-13 September 2003, Lion Larry Woods directed the hot dog stand sales which netted $174. Lions who helped out were Jim Burrow, Bob Callender, Mary Lou Gilbreath, Jack Menendez, Leo Mitchell, and Jack Pruitt. Chili Cook-Off Dinner The Rotary Club sponsored the annual Chili Cook-Off which occurred 4 October 2003. The Rotary Club asked the Lions if they would serve a brisket and sausage dinner for the contestants the night before the Contest. We agreed and made $400 for our efforts. Lion Kitty Callender did a great job in pulling this together. Other Lions who participated were: Don Blair (and his wife Betty), Carole Boddin, Bob Callender, Bryson McCool, and Tom Pugh. PDG Don Reese (from Eunice) also helped out. Lions Carole Boddin, Leo Mitchell, and Tom Pugh cooked the briskets. Oktoberfest For the second straight year, the Club had its German Potato Soup Booth at the annual Oktoberfest which took place 17-18 October 2003 at the Ruidoso Convention Center. Lion Kitty Callender employed her cooking expertise and an old secret recipe to "whip up" numerous batches of some mighty fine potato soup. Needless to say, the soup was a hit and, due to the demand, sold out early Saturday evening. Lions met on the evening of 16 October to peel 250 pounds of potatoes and prepare other required ingredients. This fund raiser resulted in a profit of $901. Lions who participated were: Bill Allen, Carole Boddin, Bob Callender, Kitty Callender, Morris Chambless, Carlton Davies, Mary Lou Gilbreath, Gary Henry, Dennis Hoerster, Beth Jones, Mark Jones, Ron Lueck, Bryson McCool, Ole Olson, Tom Payne, Jack Scott, B. J. Welch, and Bill Wooley. Dianne Vowel, Michele, and EJ Thor also helped out. Shake The Bucket On 26-28 March 2004, the Club set up “Shake the Bucket” tables at WalMart, Thriftway, and Lawrence Brothers to raise money to buy NM Lions Eye Bank raffle tickets. The Club expended 87 hours and raised $2504. Lions who participated were: Bill Allen, Don Blair, Jim Burrow, Bob Callender, Kitty Callender, Dick Cottrill, Lewis Dodson, Dennis Hoerster, Tony Hoffman, Mark Jones, Bryson McCool, Fran Menendez, Jack Menendez, Leo Mitchell, Tom Payne, Tom Pugh, Paul Ragland, Don Riddett, Jack Scott, BJ Welch, Larry Woods, and Bill Wooley. Lion Don Blair’s wife, Betty, also participated.

High Mesa Art Tour On 3-4 April 2004, the Club set up a food concession for the High Mesa Art Tour at one of the art locations near Nogal. Brisket sandwiches, chips, and drinks were served. As has happened in the past, the weather turned bad with snow and rain resulting in a poor turnout. The Club only netted $128. Lions who participated were Bill Allen, Jim Burrow, Tony Hoffman, Bob Lanik, Bryson McCool, and Leo Mitchell. Convention Quilt Raffle Lion Carole Boddin volunteered to design and construct a Lion quilt that was to be raffled off during the State Lions Convention scheduled for 13-16 May 2004. After countless hours of hard work, Lion Carole presented her “Work of Art” to the Club during a Noon Meeting resulting in many kudos for her. Raffle ticket sales went well with $1715 being raised for the Club. This was a Club sales record for a quilt raffled by the Club. Lion Gary Henry’s wife, Ann, purchased the winning ticket. Aspencash Motorcycle Rally The annual Aspencash Motorcycle Rally, which was held 20-23 May 2003 at the Convention Center, is one of the biggest annual events to occur in this area. The Club had the only food booth inside the Convention Center and we served green chile stew, sausages, nachos, popcorn and an assortment of drinks. Lion Bill Allen planned and directed the food concession. Many Lions participated in setting up, working, and folding up the concession. The Club’s net profit was approximately $900. It would have been considerably more but there were several new food vendors outside the Convention Center. The green chile stew, as prepared by Chef Bill Allen, was acclaimed "the greatest" by the bikers. Lions who participated were Bill Allen, Don (and Betty) Blair, Jim Burrow, Mary Lou Gilbreath, Gary (and Ann) Henry, Mark Jones, Bryson McCool, Chris McCool, Fran Menendez, Jack Menendez, Leo Mitchell, Tom Pugh, Waynette Walker, BJ Welch, and Bill Wooley. Baseball Park Food Concession For a ten week period (15 April – 15 June 2004), the Club ran the food concession at the Little League Baseball Park on Gavilon Canyon Road. Lions Valari Chavez and Dick Cottrill did a great job in directing (and working many hours on) this fund raiser that netted $5200 for the Club. The Club in turn made a 25% donation (i.e., $1300) to the Little League Association. Lions who participated were Bill Allen, Don Blair, Jim Burrow, Bob Callender, Kitty Callender, Morris Chambless, Valari Chavez, Dick Cottrill, Lewis Dodson, Vic Dunham, Vern Edmondson, Gary Henry, Tony Hoffman, Mark Jones Ray Lawrence, Bryson McCool, Chris McCool, Fran Menendez, Jack Menendez, Leo Mitchell, Jack Pruitt, Margaret Pugh, Tom Pugh, Jack Scott, Larry Woods, and Bill Wooley. Gun & Collectible Show The Club (with the assistance of Stacy Hodges) sponsored the annual Gun and Collectible Show that was held at the Ruidoso Convention Center on 29-30 May 2004. Lions Mark Jones and Kitty Callender did a great job in planning and directing this fundraiser netting $6670 for the Club. The Club sold admission tickets for the show, sold raffle tickets for a black powder rifle, and ran the food concession. Lions who worked this fund raiser were Bill Allen, Don (and Betty) Blair, Carole Boddin, Frank Bubser, Jim Burrow, Bob Callender, Kitty Callender, Carlton Davies, Morris Chambless, Carol Hettenbach, Mark Jones, Bryson McCool, Chris McCool, Fran Menendez, Jack Menendez, Leo Mitchell, Tom Pugh, Tony Hoffman, BJ Welch, and Larry Woods.

Community Service Projects & Donations

Community Service Projects & Donations

Care Center Support On the first Thursday of each month, a group of Ruidoso Noon Lions arrive at the Ruidoso Care Center at 1:30PM to conduct a bingo session for the residents there. Lions Jim Burrow, Jack Menendez, and Jack Scott have done an outstanding job in recruiting volunteers and running each session. Other Lions who have participated in this community service activity are: Bill Allen, Don Blair, Bill Crow, Mary Lou Gilbreath, Ray Lawrence, Fran Menendez, Jack Menendez, Leo Mitchell, Ole Olson, Jim Radcliffe, Don Riddett, and Bill Wooley. The Club is also providing $100 a month to help provide ice cream for the residents.

Eye Exams/Glasses Since its inception in 1969, the Ruidoso Valley Noon Lions have provided eye exams and glasses to needy folks in the community. Lion Bill Allen is Chairman of the Vision Assistance Committee which administers this important community service project. Other members of the Committee are Valari Chavez and Beth Jones. Dr. Bill McDonald, Lion Dr. John Davis, and the optometrists at Family Vision Center support the Club's efforts for this project by discounting the eye exams and glasses that the Club sponsors. Since 1 July 2003, the Club has provided approximately $6000 for eye exams and glasses. The Club also collects used eye glasses for recycling.

Photo Eye Screening One of the signature projects of the Ruidoso Valley Noon Lions Club is the Photo Eye Screening of young children in Lincoln County. For more than six years, the Club has been conducting this community service project with 500-900 children being screened on an annual basis at no cost. Lion Bill Allen, who initiated the Photo Eye Screening Project in 1997, does a fantastic job in coordinating and directing the Club's efforts. This year the Club screened 566 children at a cost of $3226.

The Photo Eye Screening camera uses a special type of Polaroid instant film and the Medical Technology, Inc., patented technology to identify six childhood eye disorders which can lead to amblyopia, the #1 cause of monocular blindness in children. Since most children do not get their first vision test until after they enter elementary school, a vision screening at an early age can help head off the potentially devastating effects of these six eye disorders. More specifically, it is estimated that currently one in twenty youngsters will have one of these eye disorders but only one in four will be checked in time to do something about it. Once the picture of a child's eyes has been taken, the resulting photo is sent to the Ophthalmic Imaging Center at Vanderbilt University where it is evaluated. The evaluation results are then sent back to our Club. If the results show there are problems, the parents of the child are notified that they should take them to an eye doctor for testing. Parents are told during the screening that if they hear nothing back, they are to assume the results of their child's eye screening showed there were no problems. The screening process cost the Club $5-$6 per child which includes the price of the film, equipment, photo evaluation, and handling/postage. The following table summarizes the screenings performed this year.

Peace Poster Contest The Club sponsored the local level of the Lions Clubs International 2003-04 "Dream of Peace" Peace Poster Contest. On 11 November 2003 after our Noon Meeting, Lions assigned as judges were asked to review 31 poster entries of students from three local schools. After some tough decisions, a poster by Alex Levinson (White Mountain Intermediate School) was awarded First Place. Posters by Talisha Chavez and Kaceney Wilson were selected for Runner-Up Awards. The Club provided $200 for Savings Bonds as prizes. Each poster was judged on originality, artistic merit, and expression of this year's theme, "Dream of Peace". Alex Levinson's poster was then submitted to District 40S where it competed with other winning poster entrants from all over southern NM. The poster created by a student from Alamogordo was selected as the best in the District and it was submitted to International where it competed with entrants from all over the world. Next year's Peace Poster Contest theme is "Give Peace A Chance" and just maybe, one of our local youngsters will win the Lions Clubs International's Grand Prize! XMAS Wooden Toys for Santa’s Helpers Lion Gary Henry joined the Club in September 2003. He “hit the ground running” and picked up the wooden toys project that Lion Bob Bohannon (passed away May 2003) had conducted for years. Lion Gary made 320 wooden toys that were finished in time to be distributed as part of the Santa’s Helpers Project. Cost of materials was $681. Diabetes/Eye Screening On 19 November 2003, the NM Lions Eye Foundation Mobile Eye Screening Van was set up at the Ruidoso Senior Center from 9AM to 1PM. Lion Mark Jones coordinated this effort which resulted in over 40 folks being screened. Dr. Bill McDonald and Lion Dr. John Davis performed the eye screenings while Lion Beth Jones, who is a registered nurse, performed the diabetes and high blood pressure screenings. Lions who assisted were: Carole Boddin, Bob Callender, Kitty Callender, Mark Jones, Ole Olson, and Tom Pugh. The Club sponsors two of these screenings annually. Note that the Eye Screening Van is available to all Lions Clubs in NM.

Relay For Life The annual local American Cancer Society Relay For Life was held on 18-19 June at the Ruidoso High School Track. The program started at 6PM Friday with an introduction of the cancer survivors who then walked the first lap. All of the other participants followed the survivors to begin the walking that would continue through the night until 9AM the next morning. Lion Don Blair (with a lot of help from his wife, Betty) directed the Club's efforts. The Club was a Platinum Sponsor again this year with our donation of $1000. Lions were asked to walk in the Relay, which included donating $10 and receiving a Relay T-shirt. The Club provided free water (donated by WalMart) to the walkers. Lions who participated were: Bill Allen, Don Blair, Jim Burrow, Bob Callender, Kitty Callender, Morris Chambless, Dick Cottrill, Lewis Dodson, Gary Henry, Beth Jones, Mark Jones, Bob Lanik, Dale McLaughlin, Jack Menendez, Leo Mitchell, Tom Payne, Jim Radcliffe, BJ Welch, and Bill Wooley.

The following table presents a breakout (number and hours worked) of the fund raisers and community service projects in which each Club member has participated. Hours are also shown for time worked during the NM Lions State Convention and for administrative purposes. Administrative hours are figured as 1.5 hours for each Board Meeting attended and President’s, Secretary’s, and Treasurer’s duties are assessed at 10 hours per month. The information in this report is based on project sign-in sheets and other data provided to the Club Secretary. Because of missing information or a dumb mistake by “yours truly”, there may be some mistakes. If any entry is erroneous, please contact the Club Secretary such that it can be rectified. A corrected version of the Member Performance Report can be then provided to members if needed at a later date.

76th NM State Lions Convention The 76th NM State Lions Convention was held 13-16 May 2004 in Ruidoso. The Ruidoso Valley Noon Lions hosted the event, which was the culmination of many long hours of planning and hard work by Club members. The Convention came off without a hitch and comments from many `attending Lions were very positive. The Club has definitely raised the bar several notches with respect to Lion Conventions in NM. Lion President Tom Pugh chaired the Convention Planning Committee assisted by Lions Kitty and Bob Callender who coordinated much of the registration and administrative requirements. Other Committee members and their functions were: Bill Wooley - directed the collection of items for the Welcome Bags; Don Blair and Mark Jones - setup the Golf Scramble; Sandy Schiffman - directed the decorating of the Banquet Hall; Valari Chavez - lodging arrangements; and Bryson McCool - produced the Program and designed the pin and patch. Lions who worked during the Convention were: Bill Allen, Don Blair, Carole Boddin, Frank Bubser, Jim Burrow, Bob Callender, Kitty Callender, Carlton Davies, Vic Dunham, Gary Henry, Mark Jones, Bryson McCool, Chris McCool, Fran Menendez, Jack Menendez, Leo Mitchell, Leon Noack, Tom Pugh, Sandy Schiffman, Waynette Walker, and BJ Welch.
