The Poland Corner School has been crowded. This ~ . -

should con1e before the town meeting· £or a decision. Since ' .

some of yot1r teacliers.'are working under a permit, another teacher cannot be added. It wou\cl seem best · t0 convey ·a part of the pupils to another school.

There \II/ere many changes in teachers. The new teachers are-Georgia McKnight at tl1e Empire School; Beulah Kimball at Bailey I-Ii•lil; Stella Lane at I-Iarris Hil1l ~ Phyllis ~rackett at Poland Spring Primary.

CONCLUSION . It can be truly stated that the War has effected your

I want to thank each member of the school committee for th~ help given. me, to the teachers for their aid and the

REPORT OF TnE PUBLIC HEALTH NURSE-1944

Nursit1g service is no. long·er just a matter of bedside nursing care. Public Health Nursing Service has devel-

, oped during the past 30 years ' to a program that· includes · not only care of the si~k:, but the preventio11 of disease, and the · pron1otion of health. In spite of a gro\ving fund of 111edical k:novvledge and sl<ill, too much-preventable sickness sti ll persists, to0 ma11y physical defects go neglected.. There ·is n1uch need for greater community education in alil pl1ases of Public Healtl1. ' An averag·e of tvvo days a month has been sp~nt in .

Poland. Child Hygie~e, maternity service, venereal disease a:nd tuberculosis c011trol ; home, school, and con1munity sa-nitation proqlems have called for demonstrations bY, your Public -Healt h Nurse at same t ime duri11g .the year. Forty-o_ne ho111e visits and 56 interviews with con1111unity officials. and teachers vvere 111ade in connection \iVith heal.th activities.

Three child health conferences were held in East Poland, Poland Corner and \!Vest Poland. The averag·e a'.ttenda11ce vvas 41 bl:lt 17 o.f these vvere school ch.ildren con1-ing for i1111nu11izatio11 only. That makes an avei·age of 8 infants or preschool children to each co11ference \vhich is a very small attendance for the amount of time and expense involved. One of our objectives for 1945 should be to double the interest and attendance if these co11ferences a.re to be continued.

· J\d:uch tin1e has been spent in school health worl<. I-Ieari11g· tests vvith the audiometer for all chi.J dren ~bove the second grade vvere g iven, and six children shovving more _or less loss of hearing were referred to their family physician.

Dipl1theria and smallpox immunizations were offered , in aH schools aNd child health conferences. At the request

of the healtl1 cou:ncil tuberculin tests were a lso offered, 155 s111a llpox and 206 diphtheria immunizations vvere given.

'

' One 'hundred and seventy-on,e Tuberculin tests revealed I

several individuals with positive reactions. These followed I • \

1=1P with chest x-rays, all of whi'cl1 were· sat~sfactory. '

T,h.rough the nu.rses' influence and the help of the local Red Cross, tw0 chi1ldren had n1ach needed tonsi1l an~ ade-11oid operations .

It is a tragic commentary on the health record .of our natio11 that ha1f of the first three n1i·l1liofl young· ·men of this Wars' Selective Service examinations were rejected for g·eneral military service. It is dou~ly trag·ic because man:y o;f the defects might have bee11 p,revented or corrected in infancy, or childho?d. These facts. help to impress on us the urgent need for an adequate health education progran1. The whole comm.umty -must shhre in such a prog·ra11~ if opt11num ·healtB. is to be obtained for al'l during· the post war . period. For this reason we are especially happy in _the organization 6£ the Poland Health Council of which Mrs. Farinie Verril•l is the P.reside~t. / - ·

'

• '

. Our big objective in 1945, working tog·ether , \"lith Health Officer, Mr. George Pulsifer and the Poland Health

I . .

Cou.nci·l is to study the community health a·nd develop a health equcation pr~gram· for the promotion of maximun1 Public Health .

' We wisl1 to express ~ur appreciati0n to th.e Poland

Health Council and al'l others who helped in health vvork in Poland this year.
