4. FINANANCIAL STATEMENTS AS ON 31 DECEMBER 2020

According to the preliminary audited Income and Expenditure Statement for the

financial year 1 January 2020 to 31 December 2020, as prepared by BGR de

Villiers, the year ended on a surplus of R 42 730.

The surplus lead to an increase in the accumulated funds from R 1 957 139 on

1 January 2020 to R 1 999 869 on 31 December 2020.

5. STATE OF THE CLONES

There are 513 registered clones and 276 candidate clones listed in the DPA

clone register. The details of these clones, as on 31 December 2020, are

provided in Table 1.

The totals above indicate the total number of clones on the register, there are

varieties where several clones have been registered. There are also a

reasonable number of clones for which only nucleus plants have been

established and information of the clones is therefore not included in Table 1.

There are 404 rootstock units with a total of 1 015 408 certified/candidate

plants. There are 1 222 scion units with a total of 552 405 certified/candidate

trees.

7. NURSERY TREES AVAILABLE

The number of trees lifted, by fruit type are listed in Table 4.

A total of 3% fewer trees were harvested in 2020 than in 2019. However,

interspecies (179%), almonds (139%) and apples (111%) showed considerable

growth. The largest decrease in the number of trees lifted was in plums (59%)

compared to 2019, while pears (81%) also decreased.

The percentage of certified trees lifted (47.6%) remained the same as in 2019.

The largest increase in certified trees is in plums where the percentage

increased from 65.3% in 2019 to 71.5% in 2020. In contrast, the percentage for

interspecies decreased from 24.6% to 12.2%.

Of the rootstocks utilized, 85% were issued as certified or candidate, compared

to 87% in 2019.

The rootstocks utilized for 2020 are indicated in Table 5, the number of

rootstocks per fruit type is given with the statuses, as issued.

8. SUMMARY OF THE ACTIVITIES OF 2020

• The DPA co-opted three experts during 2020, to serve on the Technical

Committee

• The Standard Operating Procedure for Clone Registers has been fully

revised and the amended document (DPA C-1-2) came into use in 2020.

• As part of the Strategic Plan, Hortgro and Plant SA jointly published articles

to bring the importance of certification to the attention of producers.

• Plant SA presented a Plant Inspector course which was attended by 21

candidates. Nineteen of the candidates passed the theoretical examination

successfully.

9. ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

The DPA wishes to thank every PIO and nurseryman who contributed in 2020 to

the success of the Deciduous Fruit Plant Certification Scheme. Thank you also

to all the individuals who served on the DPA Board, Technical Committee as well

as other working groups during 2020.
