Letter from theAnnual Fund Chairs

At the beginning of the 2013-14 school year, we set out to help Calvert School once again raise $1,000,000 for the Annual Fund. We did so with the belief that our children deserve the very best–the best teachers, the best facilities, the best environment to learn. Ensuring that Calvert maintained a strong Annual Fund would enable Calvert to provide everything our children and teachers needed to be their best. We believed in our children; we believed in our teachers; we believed in our School. This was our time to make a difference.

Not only did we believe in our School but so did you–the Calvert Community! All of you, our dedicated parents, loving grandparents, loyal alumni, involved friends, and committed employees, came together, as you have in the past, to help us reach our goal and ensure that our children had all of the resources they needed to flourish. We are truly pleased to report that unrestricted and restricted gifts to the Annual Fund totaled $1,003,825 this year. We are grateful to each and every donor who supported Calvert.

Our Annual Fund goal this year is special for many reasons. Chief among them is that this year, every gift to the Annual Fund was matched dollar for dollar by the W. P. Carey Foundation. As a result of your generous support, Calvert has met the Carey Challenge and will receive a gift of $3,500,000 from the Foundation! Congratulations, and thank you!

Another reason this year was special was because of the parents and grandparents of the Class of 2014. Together, these families raised $135,906 for two special gifts to the School and helped push the Annual Fund to the $1,000,000 goal. Led by the Eighth Grade Parent Gift Chairs Jim ’80 & Jane Webster, the funds raised will be used to name and upgrade the student suite on

the third floor of the Middle School and to purchase video recording equipment for the Lower School Assembly Hall. We are grateful for these gifts and proud of the accomplishments of this wonderful class.

Our job would not be complete without taking the time to thank the dedicated members of the annual giving leadership team, each of whom played a significant part in the success of this year’s Annual Fund: Erik & Casey Briggs, Annual Fund Vice Chairs; Chuck Nabit, Banner Society Chair; Ward Classen ’71, Trustee Chair; Margie Garland Whitman ’69 and Sally Ridgely Thompson ’91, Alumni Division Co-Chairs; John Avirett ’95 and Courtney Brent ’95, Young Alumni Committee Co-Chairs; Jim ’80 & Jane Webster, Eighth Grade Parent Gift Chairs; and Shannon Cheston, Kyle Gladden, and Brian Mascuch, Faculty & Staff Co-Chairs. This achievement would not have been possible without their support.

Calvert Meets the Carey Challenge!

In April 2013, the W. P. Carey

Foundation presented the Calvert

Community with a challenge.

They offered to match all gifts to

the School, dollar for dollar, in

support of the Annual Fund and

the Building on Strength Campaign

for Calvert School. We are thrilled

to report that as of June 30, 2014, the W. P. Carey match has been completed and the School will

receive $3,500,000, the largest gift in the School’s history!

On behalf of everyone at Calvert School, we want to thank all of the alumni, parents,

grandparents, and friends who stepped forward to meet this challenge. We also want to thank the

members of the Carey Family who helped make this gift possible. As a result of this extraordinary

gift, the Lower School building will be named W. P. Carey ’42 Hall in honor of Bill Carey, one of

Calvert’s greatest champions and advocates.

CS Day – Calvert’s First Alumni Online Day of Giving is a Huge Success!

On Wednesday, May 14, 2014, Calvert held its first Alumni Online Day of Giving, CS Day. Over 25 alumni supported this effort by serving as CS Day Ambassadors, encouraging their friends and classmates through Facebook and other social media outlets to make a gift to the School on this special day. Additionally, two generous Trustees agreed to match each gift of $25 or more that day with an additional $100, up to $10,000.

By all accounts, CS Day was a major success! Calvert received 124 online gifts totaling $18,340 (including the full match). We are incredibly thankful to all of the outstanding alumni who helped make our first online day of giving such a huge success!

We look forward to our next CS Day in spring 2015 – keep an eye out for more information throughout the year!

As a sign of appreciation for the wonderful years spent at Calvert School, the parents and grandparents of the Class of 2014 decided to honor the graduation of their children with a special gift effort for the school.

Class gift chairs Jim ’80 & Jane Webster, along with committee members Jesse Alfriend & Heidi Minken, Geoff ’74 & Susan Carey, Scott & Pam Conover, Kevin & Melanie McCreadie, John & Christine Powderly, and Brad Woloson & Crickett Johnston, raised $135,906 to support two special projects. Funds raised will be used to decorate, furnish, and name the

student suite on the third floor of the Middle School in honor of the Class of 2014. This space will be used by future Eighth Grade classes for breaks between classes and small group work and will be designated as the Eighth Grade Lounge. Additionally, the funds will also be used to purchase and install video recording equipment for the Lower School Auditorium. Beginning in September 2014, many

class plays and other special events will be recorded by the School and shared with the Calvert Community on the website.

n Endowed Scholarship Funds

n the Janice a. bosley family scholarship fundEstablished in 2007 by the Warnock family to honor the memory of Janice A. Bosley, mother of Deidre Bosley Warnock, this fund provides financial assistance to the child of a single-parent who could not otherwise afford to attend Calvert School.

n the william and carolyn gorman scholarship fundThe fund was established by Mr. and Mrs. Gorman in 1997 to provide scholarship assistance to students who demonstrate financial need.

n the anne gordon mumford ’56 (andy rulon-miller) scholarship fund

The fund was established in 2004 by her family to memorialize Anne Mumford ’56 and to honor her dedication to education. This scholarship will be used to provide financial assistance to a child who otherwise would not be able to attend Calvert School and promote diversity within the Calvert student body.

n the hathaway family scholarshipThis fund was established by the Hathaway family to provide financial assistance for a qualified student living in Baltimore City in an effort to maintain geographical and socioeconomic diversity.

n the lawrence p. naylor iii scholarship fundEstablished in 2004 by Mrs. Cassandra Naylor and her family, this fund memorializes Carnell and Angela Dawson and their children by providing financial assistance for a qualified student from the Oliver Community or other inner city neighborhood.

Established in 2008 by alumnus Elizabeth Schmeisser Nelson ’33 and her husband, Karl, this scholarship is to be used to provide financial assistance for underprivileged children at Calvert School.

n the deborah dorsey albert memorial fundMr. Charles T. Albert, Sr. ’42 and the Albert family established the Fund in 1994 in memory of Mrs. Albert, a member of the Calvert class of 1944. The Fund provides an annual award to a faculty member who has made an outstanding contribution to the life and mission of Calvert School.

n the alevizatios/austin fundThe Alevizatos/Austin Fund honors Christen Aristides Alevizatos ’76, Dorothy Chrysanthe Alevizatos ’80, and Alexandra Alevizatos Kirtley ’83, the grandchildren of Mrs. Charles S. (Dorothy) Austin, Jr. Proceeds from the Fund are used to help underwrite the costs associated with faculty summer study and travel as a way to enrich Calvert’s curriculum.

n the apgar award for excellence in instructionFounded in 1996, The Apgar Award is given to individual faculty members who have had a demonstrable impact on their students or who have made a significant contribution to the art of teaching and counseling students.

n the class of 2006 staff awardThe Class of 2006 Staff award was created by Head Master Andrew D. Martire ’83 to acknowledge non-faculty employees for their exemplary service to Calvert School. Supporting this idea, the parents and grandparents of the Class of 2006 chose to endow and name this award in honor their children’s graduation.

n the class of 2008 new teacher development fundEstablished by the parents and grandparents of the members of the Class of 2008, this fund provides professional development support for teachers within their first three years of teaching at Calvert.



n the edward woodman brown faculty endowment fundCreated during the Centennial Initiative, this fund was established in memory of the late Head Master Edward Brown in honor of his devotion to Calvert’s faculty. Proceeds will be used to support faculty enrichment through continuing education.

n the emily kenny reeves fundEstablished by Charles B. Reeves, Jr. ’35 in memory of his mother, the Emily Kenny Reeves Fund is an endowment intended to provide funding for travel and study opportunities for Calvert teachers seeking professional development.

n John work garrett ’36 memorial fundThe Fund was established by Harrison Garrett ’23, Katherine Garrett Bainbridge ’26, Alice Garrett Phillips ’28, Ella Garrett Brigham ’30, and Barbara Garrett Reed ’34 in memory of their youngest brother, John W. Garrett ’36, Second Lieutenant, Air Corps, A.U.S., pilot of a B-24 who was killed in the line of duty on May 3, 1944. Proceeds from this fund are used to ensure that Calvert’s faculty members have the opportunity for study and travel, and to enrich the curriculum by bringing those experiences back into the classroom for their students.

n the harris fundThe Harris Family established this fund recognition of the special care that former Calvert faculty member, Margaret Waters Licht, provided for her Seventh Age boys. Proceeds from the Fund are used to help Calvert faculty members with the costs associated with their continuing education.

n the matthew ’06 & abigail ’10 young memorial awardCreated in June 2008 by Head Master Andrew D. Martire ’83, this fund honors the lives of Matthew ’06 and Abigail ’10 Young. This award is presented to a member of the faculty or staff who has contributed significantly to many areas of school life, is devoted to personal growth and improvement, displays care and concern for all members of the Calvert community, and possesses the intangible spirit that made Matt & Abby so special.

n the bolton endowment for the artsProceeds from the Bolton Fund are used by Calvert to provide enrichment activities for the performing arts, and the fine arts, and to fund the annual Bolton Arts Award, which recognizes a student’s exceptional interest, effort, and growth in the arts. 2014 Recipients: Elizabeth T. n the class of 1981 tucker hebb memorial fund

Named in memory of classmate David “Tucker” Hebb, The Class of 1981 Tucker Hebb Memorial Fund is a financial aid discretionary fund awarded at the Head Master’s discretion to students or families needing assistance with non-academic, school-related expenses.

n the class of 1985 carter burwell roulette ’85 technology fund

Named in memory of classmate Carter Roulette, this Fund was established by the Class of 1985 during their 25th Reunion to provide for emerging technology that will enhance the educational experience at Calvert School.

n the class of 2009 health and wellness fundEstablished by the parents and grandparents of the Class of 2009, this Fund provides equipment upgrades and maintenance for the Class of 2009 Health and Wellness Center.

n the class of 2011 visiting speakers fundEstablished by the parents and grandparents of the Class of 2011, this endowment provides for a noteworthy speaker to visit the Calvert campus each year to meet with Eighth Grade students and is designed to enrich the students’ academic foundation, reinforce topics learned in the classroom, and encourage reading and writing.

n the nambda cha calvert lacrosse fundThe Cha Family, in memory of Yong Jim ‘Nambda’ Cha, Calvert class of 2007, established the Fund to strengthen the lacrosse program at Calvert School.

n the george h. cosman chair in astronomy and other sciences

The Cosman Chair provides funds to support continuing education for Calvert faculty members who teach and develop science programs, and to provide for the care and upgrading of the Luetkemeyer Planetarium Programs. The fund was established in 1997.

n the dunning memorial fundThe H.A.B. Dunning Foundation funded this endowment in 1971 with understanding that the income shall be used at the Head Master’s discretion for the benefit of Calvert School.

n hopkins lower school art fundEstablished in 2004, the Hopkins Lower School Art Fund is intended to provide funding for a Lower School Art Resource area as well as art supplies and materials above and beyond the operating budget.

n the sanger/naylor technology fundEstablished by Marjory Bartlett Sanger ’32 in honor of her classmate, Lawrence P. Naylor III, and formerly called the Calvert Technology Fund, proceeds from this fund are used to support Calvert’s technology program including providing and maintaining laptop computers that may be borrowed by students who are not able to purchase a laptop because of financial difficulties.

n the sheridan foundation endowmentIn October 1985, the Sheridan Foundation awarded a gift to Calvert School to provide funds that can be used for maintenance projects that fall outside of the yearly budget or can be saved for the purchase of equipment or a renovation project.
