I am happy to report that the Museum is in the best shape, in every respect, it has ever been in recent memory.
The Museum has flourished in large part thanks to the capable leadership of our Executive Director, Norah Diedrich. Under Norah’s guidance, and with the unfailing support of her wonderful team, the Museum continues to provide innovative programing responsive to the community’s needs and aligned with the Museum’s Mission. Implementation of the first stages of the Museum’s inspired strategic plan is well underway.
Applying the metrics of the highest American Alliance of Museum standards, Norah and her staff consistently exceed excellence. The unprecedented success and positive momentum the Museum is enjoying is reflected in the national acclaim and the wide, enthusiastic regard the Museum has earned from the community we serve.
We also are blessed with talented, diverse and highly engaged trustees. Through governance policies that aspire to the highest and best practices, Board leadership is committed to supporting our core Values and strategically stewarding our precious resources: our historic buildings, campus, collections and personnel.
Thanks to Norah’s and the Board’s vision, our new, exciting Mission is to “champion a provocative diversity of creative voices and experiences.”
I am particularly proud of the Board’s dedication to robust organizational resilience, central to which is preserving the Endowment. I am immensely gratified that the Board is committed not only to assuring financial sustainability, but also, by allocating resources to our amazing programs, to providing for future growth and innovation.
I step down as Board chair with full confidence in Norah’s most capable abilities, and in my successor, Steve Richter. I know he will take up the mantle and execute his mandate to lead with flair and fervor, and will diligently work to preserve and guide the museum to the next step in its remarkable, and exciting evolution.
Over the past few years, we have re-imagined and re-invigorated our arts programming. The result: a museum that is more open to new ideas and ways of working. Our visitors, who have become increasingly diverse, appreciate an opportunity to be inspired by a broader range of artistic voices, have their assumptions challenged and perhaps discover something unexpected about themselves and others. Fortunately, we have a permanent collection of significant works of art, which provides a valuable historical context to the exhibits of emerging artists.
This art-inspired vitality has not gone unnoticed. One recent note on a donation card read, “We have seen much positive change at the Museum lately and are happy to support it.” “I love and applaud your new approach to getting kids into the museum FREE!!! Great way to build a foundation of support for years to come,” remarked a Second Saturday program attendee.
Motivation for such positive feedback can be found in our Museum’s 2017 Annual Report, which I am pleased to share with you here.
As I write this message, we are preparing for our 2018 Annual Meeting of the Membership, the 105th such convening. The Board Leadership torch will pass from Sandra Craig, the Board President I have had the distinct honor to work alongside since my arrival and who I thank for enabling and supporting the success of the Museum throughout and before my tenure, to Steven Richter.
Steve is a past Trustee of our Museum and has an intense passion for the role art museums play in our society. Having lived and worked in Asia for the past decade he will bring an exciting international perspective to our institution.
I sincerely thank all of our participating artists, teachers, members, supporters, visitors, volunteers, trustees, and our extraordinary team of museum professionals for making our progress over the past year possible and for joining us as we look forward to the year ahead.
Without a doubt, museums are joint ventures. Our continued success depends upon everyone’s participation and enthusiasm.
Sincere thanks to all,
THE YEAR IN REVIEWNorah DiedrichExecutive Director

Curatorial was fortunate to have many talented and hard working staff in 2017. The department included Senior Curator Francine Weiss, part-time Curatorial Assistant Molly Sabin, and part-time Preparators Peter Dickison and Patrick Grimes. In 2017, the department also welcomed part-time Registrar Hillary Fortin.
During 2017, the Collections Committee met quarterly (September, April, July, and December) and approved 23 acquisitions of art for the permanent collection.
The department organized 15 exhibitions and also installed 4 guest- curated exhibitions, including 2 by Gala Honoree Dodie Kazanjian. Sarah Kennel, the Byrne Family Curator of Photographs at the Peabody Essex Museum, juried the Newport Annual Members’ Exhibition. In keeping with the Museum’s new mission statement to promote and celebrate a “provocative diversity” of artists, topics, and media, these exhibitions brought a diverse range of works of art to the Museum and activated new indoor and outdoor gallery spaces. The Museum also collaborated on programming with the Newport Jazz Festival, Newport Music Festival, and the Newport Gulls Baseball Team in conjunction with related exhibitions. With the help of many generous donors, the Museum was able to complete several conservation treatments for permanent collection objects. Thanks to the Comstock Conservation Fund (established by Adelaide C. Roberts in 2007) conservator Sarah Dove completed treatments to several works on paper by artist Frances Adams Comstock; these works were given to the Museum in 2016 by Alexandra Dane. With money raised at Wet Paint, the Museum was also able to complete conservation treatments of two oil paintings: John Noble Barlow’s Autumn at Nooseneck Hill, East Greenwich, 1884, Gift of Anne Crocker, and J.A.S. Monks’ Twilight, 1880s, Gift of J. Ross Wilcox. In the Summer of 2017, the Museum raised $9,950 at Wet Paint for future conservation projects.

The Newport Art Museum’s beloved art making event and fundraiser, Wet Paint, presented by Russell Morin Catering & Events and Newport Restaurant Group, wrapped up on Sunday, August 13 raising a grand total of $145,651 for the Museum’s exhibitions, outreach, education and historic preservation efforts and setting a new record for the event. On Saturday, 448 artists of all backgrounds, skill levels and ages made art and donated their work, much of it still wet, to the Museum. Over the weekend, 526 pieces went up for sale in silent and live auctions. Event co-chairs Rupert Nesbitt, Victoria Rios and Brooke Roberts led a committee of volunteers to produce the 24th annual event.
Bidding began with a silent auction during the Wet Paint Preview Party on Saturday night that continued into Sunday. The silent auction raised $55,401. Wet Paint culminated in its live auction Sunday afternoon, with auctioneer George McNeely, selling 28 pieces, which raised an additional $46,900. Combined, the silent and live
The Artists’ Ball to benefit the Newport Art Museum was a night to remember. The gala evening, a mysterious masked ball, was sold out with over 400 dinner guests attending, including cultural and civic leaders, collectors, Museum directors, patrons of the arts, and highly regarded contemporary artists from New York and Reykjavik, Iceland. The evening’s generous proceeds will support the Art Museum’s extensive arts programming, collections, educational activities, and preservation of its historic buildings.
The Artists’ Ball honored acclaimed art writers Dodie Kazanjian and Calvin Tomkins. Newport native, Dodie Kazanjian, has covered the art world for Vogue since 1989, where she has identified and profiled many of the leading young artists of our time. She is also the founding director of Gallery Met, the contemporary art space at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City. Her books include Icons, Dodie Goes Shopping, and Alex, a biography of the legendary Alexander Liberman, which she co-authored with Tomkins.

auctions raised $102,301 for the Museum. Additional funds were raised from sponsorships, Preview Party admission, the cash bar, sales of snacks and other refreshments, and additional donations made over the weekend. Funds raised support Museum programming, events, acquisitions and collections care.

Calvin Tomkins has been a staff writer for The New Yorker since 1960. His profile subjects have included everyone from Marcel Duchamp and Buckminster Fuller to Damien Hirst and Frank Gehry. His many books include Living Well is the Best Revenge, Off the Wall: A Portrait of Robert Rauschenberg, The Bride and the Bachelors, and the seminal Duchamp: A Biography.
In addition to a brief performance by an exceptional soprano from the Met Opera, guests enjoyed a silent auction, a one-of-a-kind porcelain service for twelve from the highly regarded designer Anna Weatherley, and dancing to the Alex Donner Orchestra until midnight.
The Winter Speaker Series returned in 2017 for its 89th season. The series included seven lectures on a variety of topics in the Museum’s Griswold House. Returning speaker Darrell West of the Brookings Institution, kicked off the series, speaking on the topic on “What to Expect from the New President.” Other topics included ISIS and the destruction of antiquities, our global oceans, the synergy of technology and fashion, Albert Bierstadt and the opening of the West, and more. Each lecture was followed by light refreshments. Sponsors of the series include Blenheim Newport, Cliffside Inn, Angela and Gary Fischer, Pam and Lee Bakalarski, Mary Jennings, Cynthia Sinclair, and Ronald and Johanna Becker.
In its second full year, the Museum’s monthly late night program featured a myriad of diverse programming to appeal to a wide demographic. This included sold out film screenings such as Loving Vincent and Yarn (in partnership with the Providence Art & Design Film Festival), Vincent Scully (in collaboration with Checkerboard Films), and just released episodes of the acclaimed PBS series Art21. Art making in the Coleman Center and in the galleries included figure drawing and portrait painting led by Coleman painting instructor Peter Dickison, multiple exhibiting artist lectures, guided gallery tours, live concerts, and presentations by leaders in the field of fine art and design, such as acclaimed photographer Henry Horenstein and apparel designer to singer Lauryn Hill, Leah Benjamin (in partnership with DesignXRI.) Art After Dark was honored as a Best of Rhode Island Editor’s Pick for “Best Artsy Social Event” by RI Monthly Magazine in August.
Also in its second full year, Second Saturday evolved into a fully fledged arts enrichment program for the whole family, held once monthly from 10am - 12pm. Designed for children aged 3-10 and their parents, this program begins with an engaging, age-appropriate close looking tour led by one of our experienced Museum Gallery Guides. Families then settle into themed activities including learning the elements of abstract painting, experimenting with electrifying clay with the RI Museum of Science and Art, learning key design and build concepts, and enjoying Tai Chi movement exercises and the ancient art of Chinese paper cutting, in partnership with the Confucius Institute at Bryant University. Each month the programming, curated by Education Associate Callie Clarke, engaged youngsters and their parents and encouraged exploration of the Museum’s contemporary changing exhibits and permanent collection.
