My favorite thing is the communication between the schools, parents and teachers.

Since I have been coming to NHR, I feel smarter.

The best part of NHR is ‘you get to be a better reader.’

(Our) students have benefited tremendously from the one-on-one tutoring, and our parents/guardians appreciate not only the convenience of the new Willow Street location, but also the educational family support that has been provided. Many thanks to the New Haven Reads staff and volunteers ... Your work will help to ensure that all students rise to a bright future.

IN OTHER WORDS FINANCESWILLOW STREET LOCATION

In April, we opened our fourth tutoring site on Willow Street to help address the demand for our programs. Twice a week, 16 students walked over from East Rock Magnet School, located right across the street. The students spent 40 minutes getting homework help, and ate a healthy snack before starting their tutoring hour at 3pm. Eventually, this location will tutor 150 students from across Greater New Haven.

PRINCIPAL, PEGGY PELLEY

I was so happy when he got into the New Haven Reads program. Elijah’s tutor has helped him a lot. He loves reading now and he has learned confidence. He used to cry when he had to read and now that he can read, he loves it!

Nydia and Elijah’s Story: First grader, Elijah, was at risk for being retained as he was so far behind in reading. His mom, Nydia, was overjoyed when he was called off the waiting list when the Willow Street location opened. A month later, Elijah’s principal congratulated her with a hug. Elijah had made such great improvements in his reading, he was no longer in danger of being retained. He received a certificate of achievement at the school awards ceremony!
