SUMMARY 2020 proved to be an incredibly challenging year in many ways for the music department. Some of our biggest events were replaced by recording projects and live streaming. We were not able to draw on the expertise of guest artists to the usual extent while workshopping with other schools was largely ruled out. In addition, the Brighton Sunday Market was unable to operate for most of 2020, placing increasing pressure on music budgets. On a broader level, South Australians were mostly shielded from the devastating effects of COVID-19. This translated into almost no break in contact time with students throughout the school year. Term 1 began with the 2019 tour choir and wind ensemble performing at Government House for the SACE Merit Ceremony in their final performance as a group. The 2020 music captains (Alison Marton, Aidan Damarell) and vice-captains (Cassie Lee, Tom Keough) together with other year 12 music students, became acquainted with our new year 8 music students through a games session before our year 8 parent information evening on 11 February. Special thanks to the Music Parent Support Group for providing a barbecue for students and parents. We were thrilled to secure the services of Ross Irwin from The Cat Empire as an artist in residence to workshop our big bands on 2 March. Ross pushed all band members to greater effort and engagement with the music. His passion for the genre was evident in all facets of his work, as was his unique ability to connect with every student – even learning their names within each workshop.

I would like to acknowledge Sinfonia members and their director, Henry South, for presenting a Bushfires Fundraising Concert in the concert hall at lunchtime on 12 March. Congratulations to Jackson Mack and Tom Keough on their selection for SA Superbands.

Other term 1 performances included:

• year 8 music parent information evening (Ashlyn von Bertouch, Greg Burton, Jack Woolcock)

• year 8 assemblies (Natalie Wilson, Jett Gazley, Cooper James) • new staff Induction Meeting (Alison Marton) • Governing Council AGM (Jazz Combo – Nic Bergoc, Ben Cook, Mina Johansson,

Tom Keough, Leticia Lee, Jackson Mack) • Leadership and Recognition Assembly (JB1 band, Rosy O’Connor, Jett Gazley,

Cooper James) • Music Parents Support Group AGM (Ben Coleman, Aidan Damerell, Leah Komad-

Antic) Adelaide Summer Orchestra In January I took part in the Adelaide Summer Orchestra. This was a great experience for me and will be for future participants. It gave me a challenge and a chance to play in a higher-ranking orchestra. Being able to play along with a world-renowned pianist, Michael Ierace, enriched this experience and has created a long-standing memory. This event has given me the conviction in my playing to continue to strive to take part in further orchestras such as this. I encourage anyone who may be of interest to doing something out of their comfort zone. Tegan Margetts – year 9 Exam Results Katerina Angione - A for grade 4 comprehensive music theatre course Jerreyl Chia - A for grade 8 violin Aliyah Goodburn – A+ for grade 4 repertoire music theatre course (including AMEB award) Ula Gustafson – B for grade 2 double bass In term 2, we were remarkably busy, despite the restriction on performing for audiences. A small group of year 10 students were interviewed for Behind The News (BTN) for International Jazz Day. This was followed the next day by the Boys Chamber Choir being featured on the evening news in connection with a school visit by Minister for Education, John Gardner. Jett Gazley and Cooper James composed and recorded “Front Line” specifically for Volunteers’ Week. The song rapidly gained popularity resulting in Jett and Cooper being interviewed on ABC Radio Adelaide. One of the many cancelled events was the 2020 Lowitja O'Donoghue Oration due to be held on 28 May in Bonython Hall. Instead, the Concert Choir recorded the reconciliation anthem “We Shall Overcome” for this year’s online commemorations. Taking advantage of an unfortunate situation, we were able to utilise the expertise of Old Scholar, Lauren Owens, to mentor our brass students while she was unable to return to university in Brisbane.

Other events in term 2 included:

• Rob Chenoweth workshopping all 3 big bands • Luke Thompson workshopping with both jazz choirs • the Salsa Band live-streaming a lunchtime concert • a lunchtime SACE performance by Percussion Ensemble 1 • Symphony by the Sea recording project

Showcase 1 was scheduled to take place on Tuesday, 23 June. With large public gatherings not permitted at this time, each year level ensemble recorded during class time in week 9. These concluding performances, which were a snapshot of Semester 1 learning, were shared with the school community electronically. Generations in Jazz recording project On the Thursday and Friday of week 6, the Generations in Jazz ensembles had the amazing opportunity to professionally record their competition pieces. The three big bands and the small ensembles and choirs had an amazing time and learnt many new tips and tricks including how to stand in front of a camera, how to pause before filming and how to keep a professional composure at all times. Although our performances at Generations in Jazz in Mount Gambier were cancelled earlier this year, our bands were overjoyed and extremely thankful to have had this experience and be able to create a lasting memory of all our hard work. Molly Thomas – year 10

We felt very fortunate to be able to present our Music Spectacular concert series in week 6, term 3 over 4 evenings. Ensembles performed habitat-based repertoire with great success to a 50% capacity concert hall. I would like to acknowledge the tireless efforts and extraordinary teamwork of the music staff, tech crew, Music Parents Support Group and students. Other in-school performances included year level assemblies (Joshua Tretheway, Chloe Pettit, Thomas Keough and Shannon Whitehead) and the Decibel Lunchtime Series (Dixieland Band, Jazz Combo, JB1, JB2, Jazz Choir, Guitar Ensemble, Salsa Band and staff band). We were honoured to once again be invited to participate in the Recitals Australia Lunchtime Concert Series, which was recorded and live-streamed on 19 August from the Tynte St Baptist Hall, North Adelaide (Shannon Whitehead, Olivia Lau, Nicolas Bergoc and Ashlyn von Bertouch). Despite COVID restrictions on mass gatherings, the music department was able to carry on with a number of our regular performances. Several of our students travelled to Enfield Memorial Park to provide background music for a special Father’s Day event. Billy James and Mike Gillard highlighted the depth and breadth of our percussion program in the annual Percussion Showcase on September 8 in the Brighton Concert Hall.

The Decibel Lunchtime Series continued with performances in the quad by the Salsa Band, Guitar Ensemble, staff band, Jazz Choir, JB 1 and 2, and Big Band 1, 2 and 3. Term 3 concluded with a combined choral workshop between our local primary schools and our Boys Chamber Choir and Jazz Choir 1. Everyone was thoroughly inspired by the performances, especially the combined items. Hopefully, we will see many of these students enrolling in Brighton Secondary School in the coming years. Congratulations on the following achievements:

• Emily Stubbs and Jesse Pannenburg: selection for the Primary Schools Music Festival Orchestra, Festival Sing 2020!

• Elroy Peters: 3rd place in SAYGE competition for Classical Guitar • Isabella Grace Mackay: 100% for AMEB Grade 1 Theory

2Saxy Online Seminar On Sunday August 23 one of my year 9 SIM students from Brighton Secondary School was offered an amazing opportunity through Presto Musical Repairs and Yamaha Australia to meet and play for two powerhouse American Saxophone players, Grace Kelly and Leo P. The YouTube/Zoom workshop began with a 40-minute tutorial from the NYC saxophonists and ended with 3 students (one from Brisbane, one from Perth and Amelie from Adelaide) playing to Grace and Leo for feedback. They gave excellent feedback and it was a valuable experience for the students. Cheryl Bentley – music staff

Most recently, we were delighted to host the Southern Concert Band Workshop, also involving local primary school students and our instrumental music staff. We were pleased to announce the 2021 music captains: Victoria Katsoulis and Jackson Mack; and vice captains: Mina Johansson and Nicolas Bergoc. We look forward to the contributions of these 4 students and all senior music students.

The Jeffrey Kong Piano Accompanying Competition was held in week 5 of term 4. Jeffrey Kong taught at Brighton Secondary School for 40 years from the inception of the Special Interest Music Centre in 1976 to 2015. This included 10 years as Head of Music. During his time at Brighton, Mr Kong accompanied countless music students and choirs to the highest level. The concert hall was named after him in recognition of his tremendous contribution to the school. The results of the piano accompanying competition were: Isabella Damarell accompanying Oliver Brown – 1st place Jessica Phan accompanying Amelia Rushworth – 2nd place Julie Guo accompanying Mia Elliott – 3rd place Bonnie Miles accompanying Cooper James – 4th place Thank you to Mr Kong for his generosity in sponsoring and adjudicating this event, and for running a piano accompanying workshop after the competition. Congratulations to the following students for the following outstanding AMEB examination results: Shannon Whitehead – A+ for Certificate of Performance (violin) Mia Elliott– A for Grade 8 (piano) Congratulations also to Jackson Mack for being nominated in the following categories of the ASME Young Composers Award: Composers in Schools; and Arrangers in Schools. Jazz on the Green On Friday October 30, many of the music students performed in the annual “Jazz on the Green” event, taking place on the front oval of the school! All of the school’s jazz ensembles performed for this event, including three big bands, two jazz choirs and several small jazz combos. This made for a great night of live jazz, and good vibes all round! Leticia Lee – year 12 Wizard Tones Studio Project On the 22 October, the year 10 SIM class visited Wizard Tone Studio. The recording engineer for the day was James Brown (an old scholar!). The purpose of the trip was for the class to experience the difference between live performance and recording a performance in a studio. We spent the term refining our performances term in preparation for recording, knowing that we had the opportunity to record two to three whole takes. As my classmates and I headed to the recording studio, I felt excited to finally hear my term’s worth of hard work finally be heard. I had the pleasure of being able to perform on recorder, being accompanied by nylon string guitar. However, as recorder is an unusual choice for a recording, I was nervous about how the end product would turn out. The students were in charge of deciding the editing of their track. This meant that we had to listen to all our takes and decide where the splicing would occur in order to create a final take. After hearing my recording, I was pleasantly surprised to hear that it exceeded my expectations. Backed by the acoustic guitar, the style and clarity of my piece shone through. From this experience, I gained a lot of confidence in my playing and really delved deep into my music. Now, I have a professional recording of my piece that I can proudly show my friends and family. Latin Percussion Workshop At the beginning of term 4, we were lucky enough to have Fabian Hevia, one of Australia’s leading Latin percussionist and jazz drummer, visit Brighton Secondary School. During the first workshop, the percussion students learned many different Latin rhythms, techniques and information about the Latin American instruments, and where they originated. We also learned about how he and his family came to Australia, how he started playing drums and percussion, the bands and outstanding musicians he played with, and other musical experiences. For the second workshop, the Salsa Band were lucky enough to rehearse with him for a double lesson. During this rehearsal, Fabian demonstrated for me different timbale sticking, rhythms, and how you can cover other instrumental parts on the timbale. We are very grateful that Fabian Hevia came to Brighton Secondary School, and we all learnt a lot from the experience. Harry Grifsas – year 9

Highlights:

Brighton Secondary School Music Spectacular was a highlight for the senior band. The students enjoyed the challenge of performing in the BSS Concert Hall as part of a secondary concert, and really appreciated the fun associated with the Habitat theme. They performed ‘George of the Jungle’ and ‘Entrance to the Dragon Cave’ to an excellent standard. The Coast Hubs workshop was a great opportunity for our students to interact with students from the Hendon Hub. All hub students were affected by the 6 weeks we were unable to be on site due to COVID19 restrictions. Students and families (and teachers) had a quick technology learning curve, and our students did an amazing job working with online lessons. They even took some of the ideas to enhance their learning when the hub was back on site. Each year it is a priority to perform in our hub schools, and these concerts were well received, with positive feedback from the audience pertaining to repertoire and information sharing. The flexibility of our host schools and families made the events a highlight. The evening concert in Term 4, week 8 was a relaxed celebration of the years’ work, which finally provided a chance for the parents and friends to hear the hub repertoire in a professional venue. In Bel Canto this year, we focused a lot on our blend and part-holding, using things like the “twang scale”. For music spectacular our choir performed “Over the rainbow” and “I see Stars” from the Musical Mean Girls. “I see Stars” challenged us to approach our repertoire as performers as well as vocalists. In term four, we learnt parts of a medley from the musical “13”. This repertoire was a fun and challenging way to finish the year. Rosy O’Connor Chorister

Through the challenging year that was 2020, our Big Band 1 went to higher heights in taking on an extremely challenging, yet enjoyable repertoire of pieces for events such as Generations in Jazz, Music Spectacular, and Jazz on the Green. We took flight into preparation for Generations in Jazz earlier than any other years, rehearsals beginning back in 2019 with a fresh new ensemble. Pieces learnt by week 1 of 2020, nothing could stop our group from taking on Pat Metheny’s A Place in the World and showcasing all our hard work to the rest of the nation. Well, nothing except a worldwide pandemic of course. That’s right, just as we were ready to put our Body and souls into a trip to Mount Gambier, Covid 19 hit. Nonetheless, we persisted and kept rehearsing the pieces, and our hard work paid off as we got the chance of a lifetime to get our pieces professionally filmed and recorded. I think I can speak for the entire band in saying that it was a chance of a lifetime to be able to experience recording like this. After bending and weaving through Covid restrictions, our next stop was Music Spectacular. The band kicked into rehearsing Moon River, which was to suit the theme of the show, Habitats. To conclude the music spectacular, our band certainly made the audience cry a river as we combined a large group of strings and horns with the big band to accompany the young ‘Bublé’ vocalists. Following the success of Music Spectacular, we had a very short amount of time to prepare ourselves for what would normally be the Jazz Cabaret. In a quick response to covid restrictions, we concluded the difficult year in an array of talent, dedication, and enjoyment at the amazing Jazz on the Green, a brilliant ending to what was a rewarding year. Jazz Under the Trees, Brighton Secondary School (courtyard) Jazz on the Green, Brighton Secondary School (front oval) Highlights:

The first ‘major’ performance for the year was to be at Generations in Jazz (GIJ). We rehearsed the set piece ‘The Bold One’, a ballad Overjoyed featuring Alex Buckby on tenor sax, and our free-choice piece, Victor Feldman’s ‘The Chant’. Ross Irwin joined us for a workshop late in term 1 as did IMS brass teacher Rob Chenoweth. After the cancellation of GIJ the band recorded their set and produced a great video for students and parents to cherish. Essentially Ellington Downunder was also cancelled however we still rehearsed and performed our chosen repertoire of ‘Feet Bone’, ‘Sepia Panorama’ (featuring Nic Bergoc and Zade Barns) and ‘Things Ain't What They Used to Be’ which featured Amelie Sampson’s faultless performance of a transcription of Johnny Hodges’ alto solo. Music Spectacular’s ‘Habitat’ theme led us to the barnyard where we performed ‘The Chicken’ and ‘Feather Report’, and closed the junior concerts with drummer Jackson Mack’s swinging big band arrangement of ‘Chicken Dance’ which he titled ‘The Chicken Stomp’. The annual Jazz Cabaret was also revised to become Jazz on the Green where we performed a short set of our repertoire and added ‘Steampunk’ which featured a screaming guitar solo by Ula Gustafson. Jazz Under the Trees, Brighton Secondary School (courtyard) Jazz on the Green, Brighton Secondary School (front oval) Highlights: Big Band 3’s year began by learning three pieces for competition at the later cancelled Generations in Jazz - ‘Front Burner’, a Nestico chart featuring solos by Jesse Timothy, Lily Burke, Georgina Adams, Thomas Monaghan and Niona Stewart; the ballad ‘Angel Eyes’, led by Lily Burke on tenor sax, and the set piece ‘A Little Loosener’ - a fast waltz with tightly woven ensemble lines, featuring solos from Olivia Marton, Rosy O’Connor, Chloe Pettit and James Gallagher. Inspiring workshops from Ross Irwin and Rob Chenoweth gave a new perspective and life to the pieces. Upon the cancellation of Generations in Jazz, the three charts were recorded and filmed to mark the occasion and achievement of the band. In a year of few concerts, the band were excited to play at Music Spectacular where they performed a much loved arrangement of ‘The Bare Necessities’ from the Jungle Book - a spirited performance involving dancing and a giant bear suit! It would prove to be a favourite both with the crowd and with the students. The final event of the year was an outdoor variation of the annual Jazz Cabaret, taking place on the front oval and renamed Jazz on the Green. The band played a 15 minute set in a jam-packed night full of great music, culminating in Jazz Ensemble 9 - a combination of Big Bands 1, 2 and 3, and both jazz choirs to perform Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars’ ‘Uptown Funk’. The year began in regular fashion for the Boys Chamber Choir, welcoming all members to the group and creating a balance between senior and new students. By late March however, the Covid 19 pandemic had arrived and the community as a whole were impacted with restrictions coming into place. During Term 1, only essential staff were on campus at Brighton and Mr. Barrett lead the weekly rehearsals without Mr. Thompson. Covid 19 presented some challenges for the group such as socially distanced rehearsals and cancellation of performance opportunities such as the Vocal Eisteddfod. In late April, approval was given for Contractors to return to schools and the group made their first Television appearance on TV. They sang Is She Really Going Out With Him by Joe Jackson as an example of socially-distanced and Covid-safe rehearsal which, a nice welcome back for Mr. Thompson. The “Habitat” themed Music Spectacular was the biggest highlight for Boys Chamber Group this year. The Boys’ soulful performance of Feeling Good featured year 12s Aidan Damarell and Hanz Matutina while the group’s poignant version of Saltwater reminded the audience of the fragility of life. Due to the restricted number of audience members, the Boys were able to perform these twice, which was a great reward for their effort. The resilience, commitment and determination of the group was exceptional throughout 2020 and I have no doubt that the students will appreciate every performance opportunity in 2021. Highlights:

An interesting year presented itself and we worked through it with continued enthusiasm and teamwork. Our Year 12 students received outstanding results for Stage 2 Ensemble Performance – Concert Band, a credit to every member. Of course, Music Spectacular is always a highlight for staff and students and this year was no exception. In keeping with the Habitats theme, Concert Band selected Space. We performed the classics 2001: A Space Odyssey and Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Once again, there was great excitement both back stage on onstage with the students performing brilliantly. Our planned tour to Clare and Barossa Valley schools in early December was cancelled due to Covid-19. An itinerary filled with performance, workshops and recreational fun was planned. The commitment from each student in the lead up to the tour was exceptional.

Congratulations also to the senior members who were outstanding role models for the junior members. The students were very disappointed but are hoping to celebrate with a similar adventure in 2021. Congratulations must be given to the Concert Band Leaders, Owen Davies (Year 11) and Tuvshinzaya Batjargal (Year 11), and also the Section Leaders who were competent leaders and role models for all. We are certainly looking forward to 2021 and enjoying the new opportunities it may bring. Jacinda Ormston Ensemble Director

Highlights:

This year we commenced our line of performances with an in-house performance of the songs ‘O Vos Omnes’ and ‘Dashing Away’. It was meaningful for the choir members to be able to perform to a small audience as the choir was not able to perform in other events such as in the opera, ‘Carmina Buarana’ and in the Adelaide Choral Eisteddfod. Our next performance was for music spectacular, wherein which our pieces adhered to the habitat theme, one of them being ‘African Call’ composed by Bertrand Groger and Klaus Frech and the other being ‘Big Yellow Taxi’ composed by Joni Mitchell and arranged by Greg Gilpin. African Call posed the challenge of containing many contrasting ostinatos, requiring the choir to work on their understanding of rhythms and how to concentrate on their own part. Big Yellow Taxi, whilst having a fairly simplistic melody, was difficult in the sense of portraying the story of things being taken for granted and missed once they are gone. The final performance we did was another in-house performance of three songs, those songs being ‘The Gift to be Simple’, ‘The Blue Bird’ and ‘Suomen Laulu’. All three songs posed challenges of their own and required significant commitment from the choir in order to reach a high standard of performance. The choristers of the choir this year have demonstrated high levels of commitment to the ensemble despite having to face many challenges and obstacles along the way. Hannah Goodburn Chorister

Highlights:

For the Music Spectacular the students played two pieces that focused on the habitat theme by playing a lively jazz version of Alley Cat with complex harmonies and off-beat rhythms, and the beautiful flowing melody Somewhere Over The Rainbow from the Film The Wizard of OZ. The piece was arranged by the English flute player Mel Orris. During the year students played different types of flute in the ensemble which extends their knowledge of low flutes and one student played piccolo, flute, alto and bass flute in the ensemble which is an amazing achievement. For the Entry of the Gladiator piece the students also had fun playing the ACME siren, Flexatone, Car Horn, Rachet and Vibraslap creating the image of a fun circus act. Alan Aungles Conductor

In its fifth year, the ensemble’s numbers grew to nine with the help of our new ensemble policy which dictates that first instrument SIM students are required to participate in the relevant small ensembles.

This year’s theme for Music Spectacular was ‘Habitat’. The guitar ensemble performed at the Tuesday and Wednesday concerts with other junior/smaller ensembles. The guitar ensemble’s approach to this theme was to perform songs based on the digital world where they performed a medley of pieces from Nintendo’s Super Mario Bros. game.

The general level of sight-reading skills amongst the members improved significantly throughout the year thanks to a number of fretboard knowledge exercises and rhythm reading worksheets. It is encouraging to think that all the guitarists in the ensemble are able to sight-read to a basic/moderate level.

Highlights: This year in Jazz Choir 1 we worked on our skills and took on the most challenging arrangements we've ever attempted. We worked on popular a cappella arrangements performed by The Real Group such as 'There Will Never Be Another You' and 'Nature Boy' for our GIJ recording session and Music Spectacular respectively. We also incorporated a cappella-style beatboxing into our performances for Music Spectacular and Jazz on the Green, with the pieces 'Oh What a Beautiful Morning' and 'Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy.' Our choir was unable to have the opportunity to compete in the annual Generations in Jazz festival this year as it was cancelled due to the pandemic. Highlights: This past year was an important one for Jazz Choir 2, being the introductory year for the ensemble, therefore putting us under the pressures of both leaving a lasting impression and carrying on the legacy of Jazz Choir 1. The initial stages of the year were, for the most part spent trying to work out the sound of the choir and what repertoire would work with our voices, as most of us had never sang together before. We opened the year working on “I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel To Be Free” and 2020 set piece “Hi” for the Generations in Jazz competition. These performances were professionally recorded in replacement of the competition which was unfortunately cancelled due to COVID-19. For the remainder of the year, we had to opportunity to work towards pieces: “A Tisket A Tasket” and “Centrepiece”, as well as a collaborative piece; “Cascading Waterfalls” with Salsa Band. These pieces were performed at Music Spectacular and Jazz on the Green respectively. Damien Lee Chorister

In 2020, the Brighton Secondary School Percussion Ensemble 2 rehearsed at lunchtime every Tuesday, with an aim to equip intermediate percussion students with ensemble and performance skills that would help them progress through their percussion career. Because of the COVID-19 outbreak, we were not able to participate in many performances and competitions this year. This, however, gave us an opportunity to make the best out of the performances we did have. We successfully performed a high skill level the percussion ensemble piece, Flight of the Falcon and popular Latin American piece, Oye Como Va for Music Spectacular and for Percussion Showcase in semester 2. The use of time signature changes and subtle dynamics challenged the ensemble musically. All of the participating students showed high perseverance by attending the rehearsals and doing individual practice even when we had no future performances scheduled due to COVID-19. Highlights: 2020 proved to be a very challenging year for all, particularly the music ensembles at Brighton. However, the resilience of the Salsa Band was far too tough for anything (even COVID) to come between us and our performances. We started off the year with only a few members. One trumpet, one trombone and a half-filled saxophone section was all we had. Despite this, as the year progressed, the Salsa spirit grew and the band along with it. We welcomed Niona, Jack and Mia on trumpet, Thomas on trombone and Eleina, Mannan and Sashwat on saxophones. When the COVID19 pandemic hit, everything changed. Despite the social distancing, the ensemble continued to grow ever closer. Together we combatted the challenge of social distancing, the everchanging guidelines and restrictions for our performances and the morale of the band. This was reflected in a lunchtime live stream performance we gave from the Hudson Room. The Salsa Band’s performance at Music Spectacular was, in fact, a spectacular moment. The group played a rendition of Caravan and then combined with the Junior Jazz Choir to perform Cascade of the Seven Waterfalls. This performance was a great chance for the band to rediscover our joy of making music together and to share it with others. At the beginning of term 4, we were lucky enough to have Fabian Hevia, one of Australia’s leading Latin percussionist and Jazz drummer, visit us. We are very

Page 43: ANNUAL REPORT MUSIC 2020 - Brighton Secondary School

43

grateful that Fabian Hevia came to Brighton Secondary School, and we all learnt a lot from the experience. Harry Grifsas Percussionist The Decibel Lunchtime Concert Series provided much needed exposure and release for built up creative energy. The Brighton Quadrangle came alive with the dancing tones and strong beats of heartfelt Salsa music and the students all seemed to enjoy the performance by offering loud applause. Jazz on the Green replaced our annual Jazz Cabaret to allow for social distancing measures and proved to be major hit for the year. The Salsa Band opened the evening with a Salsa arrangement of Michael Jackson’s Smooth Criminal, Sofrito and Don’t You Worry ‘Bout A Thing (an accurate description of this challenging year!). This performance was also the final performance for some of the band members and we thank them for all their hard work, commitment and perseverance with the Salsa Band over the years. To finish the year, we say congratulations and goodbye to our outgoing members, Molly Thomas, Chelsea Easton, Zade Barns, Chloe Petit and Juliet Macleod, and wish them good luck for their senior school years. Well done Salsa Band and we look forward to a new year of music! Molly Thomas Trumpet

Highlights:

Sinfonia made significant progress and continued to develop ensemble skills, despite interruptions to rehearsals and concerts due to COVID-19. The ensemble began the year with a bushfire relief concert to raise funds for the CFS in response to the 2019/20 summer bushfires. The students led the management of the performance, arranging advertising materials, running sectionals, and collecting donations at the performance.

Term 2 rehearsals started slowly, with COVID-19 affecting rehearsals. Symphony by the Sea was not able to go ahead as a live performance and the group prepared repertoire and recorded late in the term.

Music Spectacular 2020 was a fantastic opportunity for the ensemble to perform as a live event. The event was held across two evenings, with the ensemble performing strongly at both concerts.

Unfortunately the Term 4 performance was cancelled due to COVID-19 lockdown in South Australia. The repertoire for this performance was particularly challenging, Mendelssohn, Mozart and Giazotto. Ensemble members and section leaders worked diligently to prepare the repertoire in time for the performance and responded positively at the opportunity to prepare repertoire at an advanced level.

2020 has been a somewhat challenging year, but through determination the orchestra has continued successfully. We have been provided with multiple opportunities to perform throughout the year. We performed a diverse repertoire for the community of the International Rotary Club, we were fortunate to have this performance professionally recorded. The orchestra also performed at the school’s Music Spectacular, which this year, had a theme of different types of Habitats. This theme gave us the opportunity to play Sibelius’s Finlandia, which was a memorable highlight for all. Next year the Orchestra has been given the opportunity to play in the SACE Merit Ceremony to be held at Government house. The orchestra will play a variety of works such as Themes from James Bond and Forrest Gump and many more. This year the orchestra was able to achieve the impossible. I am sure that all members would agree that the orchestra has had a year of achievement where many unforgettable memories have been made. Alison Marton

Highlights:

As being a new group of students and therefore a newly formed ensemble, the objective was to ensure that everyone got to know each other on both a personal and musical level. This year proved to throw up all sorts of challenges, but we continued to build the sound of the ensemble. This ensemble has a unique characteristic, being non-auditioned, students from all walks of Brighton Secondary School have the ability to be a part of the music community.

In the first semester, we worked as an ensemble to continuing building our sound by learning how to implement some new vocal techniques. As a result of this, we were able to build upon our ability to hold parts, and started working towards some more challenges pieces, such as our favourite piece, being a 3-part Disney Princess Medley. Whilst we were working towards our first performance as an ensemble, we looked at what performance etiquette was and our image as an ensemble. The Spectacular Performance was better than expected, with a big projection from the choir. Singing a piece that we all loved, being How Far I’ll Go from Moana, was the key to our success. Treble Choir also had the unique opportunity to perform in from the Brighton Secondary School community at a school Remembrance Day Ceremony. The choir was asked to sing the National Anthem as part of this service. As a unique memory from our year, in our last choir rehearsal, we sang through some Christmas Carols and we had fun as an ensemble, singing for the love of it. Hopefully 2021 will be a big year, welcoming in new students and continuing to build up on the traditions and ethos of the choir. Further performance opportunities will allow for all of the skills learnt this year to be put into practice and/or applied to other Brighton Choirs. Treble Choir rehearses weekly during before school on Wednesday from 7.30-8.30am. Mannan Aurora and Eleina Badics Choristers

SCHOLARSHIPS Congratulations to Chelsea Easton on her successful application for the Colin Oliver-Wyatt Music Scholarship. In 2019, our three recipients of this ongoing financial assistance through Years 10, 11 and 12 were:

• Chelsea Easton (Year 10) • Jackson Mack (Year 11) • Kane Stewart (Year 12)

The Brighton United Freemasons Lodge also sponsored the Freemasons Young Musicians Award. This scholarship was presented to Chloe Pettit at the Recognition Assembly on 9 December. MUSIC CAPTAINS’ REPORT 2020 has been a somewhat challenging year due to Covid 19 as many events were cancelled. However, through determination and perseverance the music captains were able to successfully support the new year 8 students with transitioning into the music program and the school. We had a great time meeting them and playing some team building games, it was a great way to get to know each other. Music spectacular was the highlight of the year. The concerts were spread over four nights and we as music captains enjoyed compering and dressing up for the event highlighting different habitats. For the first time ever, our team helped in interviewing the 2021 music captains which supported the music faculty in deciding on who is best to take up the roles of music captain. Due to Covid 19 some of our ideas on expanding the music program for this year weren’t able to happen, however we hope that next year's captains are able to take on this role and bring their new ideas to life. This year there were limited events to previous years, nevertheless the music captains were able to pull through and make the most of this year. Aidan Damarell, Alison Marton, Thomas Keough and Cassie Lee

8-10 Retention Analysis: A faculty priority is the retention of students choosing the following year’s Core Music option. We aim for:

• 90% retention of year 8 students into year 9. • 80% retention of year 9 students into year 10.

In 2020 we achieved a retention rate of 93% of year 8 Core students selecting year 9 Core Music. 56% of year 9 Core students selected year 10 Core Music, after interviewing many of the students a project the 9 Core students participated in with an outside organisation was the main reason for not continuing their studies. The SIM number fluctuated at semester change due to successful auditioning of students from outside the school at year 9 and 10 level and BSS Core Music students being identified by the music staff as Special Interest candidates.
