Message from the Board Chair and the Executive Director

We are pleased to present this Annual Report of the Catholic Foundation of Maine.

Our mission is to provide opportunities to financially support the vitality of parishes and other

Catholic organizations, institutions and ministries within the state of Maine now and in the fu-

ture.

We share the belief in the importance of building endowment funds that can provide a perma-

nent base so that our Church can thrive in worship, charity, and evangelization.

During our 2015 fiscal year, we worked to accomplish our mission in several ways:

Helped 2825 donors express their love for God and the Church through endowments and other planned gifts. This brings our total number of funds to 97.

Paid out over $890,000 to parishes, schools, and other beneficiaries as income from the endowments we steward.

Spread the word about the Foundation as the best vehicle for perpetual support for the Church, through meetings with pastors and parish Finance Councils, communication ma-terials, and personal consultation with individuals.

Benefited from the wisdom of Bishop Robert Deeley, J.C.D., the leadership of a knowl-edgeable and experienced Board of Directors drawn from parishes around the state, and the work of a dedicated staff.

The Catholic Foundation of Maine is a tax-exempt organization directly serving Catholics in

Maine. As you consider a legacy of sharing, particularly in the area of planned gifts, please con-

sider us an essential resource for information and assistance to you and your financial and legal

advisors

May God bless all those who brought the Foundation this far, and inspire ever-more Catholics to

use their gift of wealth to meet the needs of the Church in Maine.

William S. Richards Elizabeth Badger, MBA, AFP

Board Chair Executive Director

A Father’s Love...

For Joseph Quirion, a good education has never been something to be taken lightly. Leaving school in the seventh grade to help support his family, it wasn’t until joining the Armed Forces that he would complete his schooling, going on to earn both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree. That would lead to a 30-year career at the Department of Veterans Affairs in Augusta, where he became the head of educational and vocational therapy. Quirion describes himself as a teacher, who encouraged and assisted others to get their GEDs and to go on to college and new careers. Joe and his wife, Louise, passed on their Catholic faith and their belief in education and in helping others to their sons. Jeffrey, Brian, Glenn, and Marc all attended Saint Augustine School, which merged with Saint Mary School in 2007 to form Saint Michael School in Augusta. Much like his father, Marc committed his life to helping others improve theirs. Marc, who earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees, as well as a doctorate, became a licensed clinical social worker. He worked intermittently at the Riverview Psychiatric Center in Augusta, served as a psycho-social evaluator at the Cumberland County Jail, and operated a private counseling practice in the Portland area. Also a gifted chef and baker, he would later work with his brother Glenn at Sweet Tooth Boston. Marc then donated his time to counsel people in the Boston area who were struggling with substance abuse. When Marc died in March 2015 following a long illness, his father wanted to honor the memory of his son by supporting Catholic education and continuing their shared commitment to helping others. It led to the establishment of an endowment for Saint Michael School. The Joseph L. W. Quirion Endowment in memory of Marc Steven Quirion is designated for tuition, transportation expenses, and related expenses, as needed. The endowment is managed through the Catholic Foundation of Maine, an independent, non-profit organization that works in cooperation with the Diocese of Portland. The Foundation’s mission is to financially support the vitality of parishes and other Catholic organizations, institutions, and ministries within the state of Maine, now and in perpetuity. Currently, the Foundation manages 114 funds, as well as charitable gift annuities, gifts of insurance, retirement funds, and bequests. The Joseph L. W. Quirion Endowment is open to bequests and additional donations. It is a wonderful way to help share a father’s love this Christmas season

A gift from “away”

Just a few months ago, the Catholic Foundation of Maine received a lovely gift. Following her husband’s wishes,

Mrs. Jeanine Anderson of Florida opened a new endowment. This new endowment, the St. Peter the

Fisherman Parish/Sacred Heart Catholic Church (Lubec) Endowment in memory of Joe Anderson is a testament

that even when you leave Maine, you never leave Maine behind.

Joseph Anderson -“Joe” to his friends, was raised in the Lubec area and attended Sacred Heart Catholic Church

while growing up there. Eventually, he moved away from Maine and lived in Florida with his wife Jeanine. After many happy years together, Joe passed away on

August 4, 2014. While Jeanine misses her husband dearly, she knows that his soul has passed into heaven

where they will be united again.

Joe’s legacy lives on in the endowment that he initiated. Sacred Heart Church and St. Peter the Fisherman Parish

will benefit from his and Jeanine’s generosity for numerous years to come. This endowment will produce dividends that will go directly to the parish church needs

annually.

If you would like to learn more about giving to the St. Peter the Fisherman Parish/Sacred Heart Catholic

Church (Lubec) Endowment in memory of Joe Anderson, or any of the other endowments of the Catholic

Foundation of Maine,
