Mission Statement
The Idaho National Guard Child & Youth Programs’ mission is to provide
resources to military families and their communities while providing peer
to peer experiences for the youth. We strive to educate the community in
which these families live while advocating on their behalf.
1. Hold a Youth Leadership Exchange between states.
2. Develop Region 10 By-Laws before the next Region 10
Teen Leadership Symposium.
3. Stay regionally connected via scheduled Skype and
conference calls, email, and the Region 10 Private Facebook
Group.
4. Develop a regional Pen Pal Program.
1. Build community capacity for youth through community networking in each region
of the state.
2. Provide military youth the opportunity to partake in leadership roles and training.
3. Maintain youth councils to ensure the voices of military youth have an outlet.
4. Provide youth development opportunities on local, regional, state and national
levels.
5. Pursue Family Resiliency by training and practicing youth in their resiliency skills.
6. Educate the educators by pursuing a military-connected student identifier to
ensure no military child is left behind.

Best Practices... Camp Closing Ceremony
On the last night of each residential
camp, volunteers and youth are
recognized for doing their part to
make camp a success.
For the volunteers, we recognize
the “Key to Our Success” and the
“Key to Our Longevity”. Each of
these individuals have provided
efforts towards making camp a safe,
happy and enjoyable experience for
all of those around them. The “Key
to our Longevity” takes it a step
further as the recipient has
returned time and time again to
lend their support, sweat and tears
to making camp a success.
Youth that have overcome a
struggle at camp, assisted someone
in need, been amazingly helpful or a
number of other things WITHOUT
SEEKING RECOGNITION, are
given a small token along with a
brief explanation to the camp as to
why each individual is being
recognized.
Each ceremony has been highlighted
with high-fives, hugs and cheers of
support for all of those
recognized.
Event Preview
Not every child is old enough to
attend camps, youth group, service
projects and a plethora of other
events held throughout the year.
So, we developed the Event
Preview concept.
In a day camp setting, teens prac-
tice leadership while guiding chil-
dren ages 8-10 through activities,
trainings and other skill building
events which older youth experi-
ence at the actual event. These
younger youth benefit from
working within their own age group
while they experience the program
atmosphere, sometimes for the first
time. They make friends with Teen
Leaders who help them feel com-
fortable and welcome while
recruiting them for future events.
Our first event of this type was our
Camp Preview of Goonies. The
focus was on youth not old enough
to go to camp yet. Youth older
than 10 (who were not a Teen
Leader) were also invited to attend
as a mentor. It was their job to be a
Battle Buddy for the new youth and
show them the ropes!
Attendees learned camp rules
and terms, played team building
games, made a treasure map,
learned how to do leather work
in preparation for making a
camp name tag and received a
certificate of participation and a
goody bag.
They are all excited for turning
camp age and now have friends
to greet them when they arrive!
Purple Up! EVERY FRIDAY
During Idaho’s Month of the Mili-
tary Child celebration in April, Pur-
ple UP! for Military Kids isn’t a one
day occurrence. We Purple Up!
every Friday during the month of
April.
Early on, we learned that a lot of
folks would “forget” to wear purple
on the national day or they couldn’t
wear purple that day because of
other reasons. So, we give them at
least four opportunities during the
month to don their purple in honor
of military children everywhere.
