About Ev-K2-CNR

Ev-K2-CNR began as a research project in 1987 when 90-year-old explorer and geologist Prof. Ardito desio launched a new campaign in the himalayan and Karakorum mountains along with climber-turned-businessman, Agostino da Polenza. just two years

later, the “Ev-K2-CNR Committee” was registered as an independent non-profit association dedicated to technological and scientific research in the hindu Kush - Karakorum - himalaya (hKKh) region, with a particular focus on Nepal, Pakistan and the Tibet Autonomous Region of China.

in 1990, in collaboration with the Nepal Academy of Science and Technology (NAST), Ev-K2-CNR installed the Pyramid international Laboratory-Observatory in Nepal’s Sagarmatha National Park at 5,050 m a.s.l. near the base of Mt. Everest.

This facility soon became known as a unique and priceless resource for the international scientific community. Today, all projects proposed for execution at the Pyramid, or in Nepal within the framework of Ev-K2-CNR/NAST joint high Altitude Scientific and Technological Research Project, must be approved by bilater Technical Committee (bTC).

in 2006, the “Ev-K2-CNR” Association, governed by an Executive Committee, was established and obtained national juridical recognition.in 2007, the Ev-K2-CNR’s decades long collaboration with CNR was formalized, an official External Research Unitunder CNR’s department of Earth System Science and Environmental Technologies (formerly Earth andEnvironment department – dTA), was opened atEv-K2-CNR headquarters and this institutionis regulated by a Management Committee.

ActivityEv-K2-CNR carries out multiple projects around the world, working through a network of international and national collaborations to ensure the highest standards of quality and optimize the impact of its results. Ev-K2-CNR, historically devoted to research in mountain environment, has recently extended its applications also in other specific ecosystems, such as the Mediterranean Sea, guaranteeing a multidisciplinary approach to understand environmental complexity and promoting resolutions to face major global and local problems, such as the impact of climate change on fragile ecosystems and the urgent need for sustainable management of the world’s precious resources like water, energy and food.within this framework, in the last year, Ev-K2-CNR has enlarged its range of action, devoting all together to climate and climate change impacts; environmental

conservation and biodiversity safeguard; human health and human welfare for disadvantaged populations; agriculture and food security; cultural heritage safeguard; water resources management; sustainable land management of protected areas; ecotourism promotion; development of skills and technical entrepreneurial activities to support the development. Parallel for each study, training courses for local researchers and technicians are organized and a strongly priority on building of institutional capacities in developing countries is recognized too, though the promotion of ad hoc programmes.

in 2012, Ev-K2-CNR began new collaborations also in brazil in order to evaluate and promote new research activities on environment and climate change.

when in 1987 Prof. Ardito desio decided to “come back in the

field” to re-measure Everest and K2 using the gPS, that at that time was known by few people, asked to the ita-lian National Research Council (CNR) a contribution for the mission. The CNR, that was the really financial body of Prof. desio’s expedition carried out in 1954 on K2, positively reply to his request, allowing the continuation of the story, in fact, never stopped, of the collaboration between the scrap-py scientist-climber, originally from Palmanova and Milanese by adoption, and the CNR, founded 90 years ago.

The Ev-K2-CNR story started this way, chasing glimpses of sky among the monsoon clouds to measure before Mt Everest, from the Tibetan side, and im-mediately after the K2. yes, because if K2 was proved, through our measures, higher then Mt Everest, as somebody had suggested, then the surprise and the joy would have been great.Even though the hope was small, it was necessary to try and in any case the mission would have been very signifi-cant because of the technologies and the new computation systems used. desio put all his effort into this project and the mission was successful.

A story that is then gradually enri-ched with important names like that of Alessandro Caporali, Maurizio gae-tani, Claudio Smiraglia, giorgio Poret-ti, to mention only a few colleagues

of desio, near to his “geological and mountain” passion. Then it was time to enlarge the field of research to other “scientific passions”. Paolo Cerretelli, physiologist of international value and member of important scientific and mountaineering expedition in Karako-rum and himalaya, that in the second half of the last century achieved im-portant results thanks to research in high regions, brought his experience and that of CNR team at the Pyramid Laboratory-Observatory. it was an im-portant moment. desio, who was ex-tremely sensitive to medical studies, subjected his team, involved in the expedition of ’54 on K2, to many trials and physiological and medical measu-res. he was easily convinced that we could built a “fixed laboratory” for carrying out scientific research in Nepal, in Lo-buche at 5,050 m a.s.l near to the Eve-rest base camp. Cerretelli consolidated the meaning of “high-altitude labora-tory” equipped with instruments and facilities similar to those available in city research centers. it was gianni Tartari, at that time young researcher at the water Rese-arch institute (iRSA) in brugherio, su-burbs of Milan, which started some research projects on water quality and pollutant transport, stealthily from his famous and dreaded boss, Prof. Passi-no. Thus began the real story, the one that produces effects and results, of Ev-K2-CNR.

25 years of work, enthusiasm, efforts and satisfactions. There were certainly a few disappointments, but nothing compared to the amount, quality and value of positive results. 25 years of scientific results and hun-dreds of publications on international journals, books, participation in confe-rences, posters and international colla-borations. Technological results concerning the development of systems, instruments and devices have been achieved too, permitting us to measure the sky, the air, the water, to collect samples of na-tural and human elements in order to

study the adaptation of people invol-ved in climbing and working activities. They also permitted us to obtain data and information more and more nu-merous and to transmit them in real time.

Sometimes, when i go to the Pyra-mid, the machine of the glad memo-ries, that over the years become a lit-tle melancholy, kindles and i tell the young technicians and researchers about when letters and information, but also samples, were entrusted to the porters that run up and down for the valleys, as far as the first airport. distant times which amaze us. Today most of the equipments and instru-mentations installed at “Pyramid” are “controlled from remote”. data spread around thanks to the constellations of the most modern satellites.

25 year of human stories: heroic sto-ries, how feels each of us for his own individual sensitivity, requiring at the same time great efforts, when, for example, you have to walk for a few hours at high altitude, often without acclimatization and sometimes wi-thout a proper training too. human stories of every kind made of enthusia-sm and terror to be hit by an edema, a monster constantly in ambush. Stories of vigour and generosity, altru-ism, patience and tolerance, coming from researchers, guides and mountai-neers, but also from local staff and por-ters.

There was, although rarely, the time and the way for the most wicked me-anness; this is part of human nature, and at 5,000 m a.s.l this aspect is ex-pressed without simulation. The hu-man collection, sampled in 25 years is truly comprehensive, completed in all its aspect, exhaustive of each mood, passion, weakness. it has to be this way, up there on the roof of the world, under the eyes of Everest and Prof. de-sio too.

happy birthday Ev-K2-CNR.

it is a pleasure and an honor for me to introduce this annual report of Ev-

K2-CNR. The collaboration between the National Research Council of italy (CNR) and the Ev-K2-CNR Commitee, leaded by Agostino da Polenza, has been now running for a long time and it has generated the joint Research Unit Ev-K2-CNR, as an operational scientific outpost of the department of Earth System Science and Envi-ronmental Technology (formerly Earth and Environment dept.). The department of Earth System Science and Environmental Technolo-gies is one of the seven newly establi-shed departments of CNR, and inclu-des 13 institutes and many research centers and infrastructures spread all over italy. The department objec-tives are to investigate all the main environmental issues of present time. Therefore, the department research programs are focused on the main environmental and societal problems, such as climate change, natural and anthropogenic hazards and sustaina-bility of natural resources, with increa-sing global population and increasing pressure for food, water and energy. One of our aims is also to address fundamental research issue to advan-ce the frontiers of knowledge on the Earth System as a complex and inte-racting organism, overarching from geology of the Earth crust, to atmo-

sphere, hydro-sphere (inclu-ding cryosphere) to ecosystem functioning and resilience to glo-bal change. Some of these studies, especially research and mo-nitoring activities at high altitude, are currently conducted within the Ev-K2-CNR unit and in collaboration with da Polenza’s team in the Everest-Karako-rum regions, in the Alps, but also in Africa and many other region of the planet. Such studies have generated internationally relevant results on many environmental problems, such as climate change, pollution, ice mel-ting, black carbon and brown clouds, but also on the health of local popu-lations. Therefore, these activities are producing positive effects on science and society. for this reason future perspectives of the collaboration between CNR and Ev-K2-CNR are very promising and CNR will continue efforts to imple-ment joint programs. in this way CNR is one of the few scientific organiza-tions carrying out research activities on three poles: Arctic, Antarctica and Everest-K2.

T he collaboration between the Ev-K2-CNR Committee and fAO’s

mountain programme has a long tra-dition and has been very fruitful.

in 2000, the Ev-K2-CNR Committee hosted the Alpine forum in bergamo. The main institutional mechanism behind the forum Alpin is the inter-national Scientific Committee on Re-search in the Alps (iSCAR). for the first time in the history of the forum Alpin, a space was provided in the event in 2000 for an international discussion on “moving towards worldwide coo-peration in mountain research”. This session was jointly organized by the Ev-K2-CNR Committee and fAO and was chaired by Mr. Tage Michaelsen from fAO. i had the pleasure to be among international speakers, such as binayak bhadra (inertanional Cen-tre for integrated Mountain deve-lopment), Alton byers (The Mountain institute), francis gichuki (University of Nairobi), bruno Messerli (University of berne), Martin Price (Perth Centre for Mountains Study), joselyne Rama-monjisoa (Mountain Association of the Malagasy highlands) and fausto Sarmiento (Andean Mountain Associa-tion), who carried out the discussion. The meeting was a very fruitful occa-sion to share knowledge and projects about such an important theme.

Thomas Hofer Team Leader (Watershed Management and Mountains) and Interim Coordinator of Mountain Partnership Secretariat, Forestry Department, UN Food and Agriculture Orga-nization

Two years later, in 2002, Ev-K2-CNR and fAO newly joined their forces on the occasion of high Summit, a transcontinental confe-rence organized to ce-lebrate the international year of Mountains: for one week a specific topic was deliberated every day around the world under a mountain perspecti-ve (water, culture, eco-nomy, risks, and policy). fAO, which had been tasked by the general Assembly of the United Nations to coordinate the in-ternational year of Mountains, collabo-rated very closely with the Ev-K2-CNR Committee in the preparation and im-plementation of the event. Our com-mon effort was rewarded by a great success, confirming the important of cooperation and collaboration betwe-en our organizations.

The Ev-K2-CNR Committee regularly contributes to the report of the UN Secretary general on sustainable mountain development, which fAO is tasked to prepare every two years for presentation to the UN general Assembly, and is actively engaged in the celebration of the international Mountain day on 11 december, which is being animated by fAO.

due to my role, i personally had other occasions to collaborate with EvK2cnr: in fact, since 2004, the Ev -K2-CNR Committee is an active member of the Mountain Partnership, a United Nations voluntary alliance of part-ners dedicated to improving the lives of mountain people and protecting mountain environments around the world, whose i have the honor to be the ad interim coordinator. The Mountain Partnership addresses the challenges facing mountain regions by tapping the wealth and diversity of resources, knowledge, information and expertise, from and between its members, in order to stimulate con-crete initiatives at all levels that will

ensure improved quality of life and environments in

the world’s mountain regions. Currently, 51 governments, 16 inter-governmental organi-zations and 145 Major

groups (e.g. civil socie-ty, NgOs and the private

sector) are members. The Secretariat of the Mountain Partnership is hosted by fAO.

My interaction with Ev-K2-CNR is further strengthened in 2010, when i became member of the Ev-K2-CNR Scientific Council, task that i hold still today.

The common interest for the same subjects and the commitment in im-proving the environment quality and, by this way, the well being of popula-tions allow thinking that in the future the relation between our institutions will continue and strengthen, achie-ving new success and results.

2012 RESULTS

Continuous meteorological data were collected by all stations of the

ShARE monitoring network in Nepal, Pakistan and italy and calibration acti-vities (concerning the standard mete-orological parameters and solar radia-tion fluxes) were performed on AwS Kala Patthar, AwS Periche and AwS Lu-kla through a specific “Quality Control automatic weather stations” (AwS-QC protocol) allowing the identification of possible sensor malfunctioning.during 2012, a collaboration with ARPA 2012 was established to also eva-luate the feasibility of the installation of a new AwS on the top of Mt.blanc (4180 m asl). A feasibility study for the re-activation of the meteorologi-cal observations on the Elena glacier Rwenzori, Uganda) has been perfor-med. The validation of 2011 data was finalized.A new gPS Master station was re-in-

stalled near Nepal Climate Observa-tory – Pyramid (NCO-P) (5.079 m a.s.l) in order to regularly record the gPS point. This activity is coordinated by giorgio Poretti (University of Trieste). Rock samples were collected in Nepal to study metamorphic CO2 degassing process in active himalayan orogen.

The study was begun along geologic transect in the Khimti Khola Valley across the Main Central Thrust Zone (MCTZ) and the greater himalayan Se-quence (ghS). This study aims to better understand the influence of this phenomenon on the long-term global climate changes. geological and rock samples were col-lected at different altitude and the first laboratory analysis was performed. This activity is coordinated by franco Rolfo (University of Turin).

in Nepal, conti-nuous measure-ments of aerosol,

ozone and meteorological parameters, as well as weekly samplings of par-ticulate matter and grab air samples for the determination of halocarbons, were carried out at NCO-P, the highest observatory of the UNEP-AbC monito-ring program and a unique source of data on atmospheric composition in the himalayas, located near the Pyra-mid Laboratory-Observatory. in April 2012, the 6th NCO-P calibra-tion campaign was successfully carried out and in this occasion calibrations and maintenance activities have been executed. in particular, a new optical particle counter (OPC) and an aerosol sequential sampler (for PM1 and PM10 on-line determination) were installed at this station. The atmospheric mercury analyzer sensor, installed last year at the Pyra-mid Laboratory-Observatory in the framework of global Mercury Obser-vatory System (gMOS) project, was moved and installed at NCO-P. The in-fluence of biomass burning emissions on inter-annual variability of ozone and black carbon concentrations in the himalayas, identifying the main source areas and providing a prelimi-nary assessment of their contribution has been performed. Moreover, the synoptic-scale transport of mineral aerosol to NCO-P has been investigated.

in Pakistan, from August to November

2012, the portable station NANO-ShA-RE was installed in Askole, in order to measure in continuous the pollutant/climate-altering compounds (ozone, carbon dioxide, total particle number concentrations). The analysis of these data was performed by iSAC-CNR re-searchers, also in the framework of the ShARE-PAPRiKA project.Meteorological, radiometric and at-mospheric (ozone, PM10, PM2.5) data were collected in Multan, through the activation, in September 2012, of a permanent station in the framework of the Pakistan-italian debt for de-velopment Swap Agreement Project: “Sustainable Social Economic and En-vironmental Revitalization in the histo-ric core of Multan City”. These data are transmitted in real time and provides useful information to evaluate air qua-lity in Multan City.

in italy, continuous atmospheric monitoring activities and regularly maintenance were carried out at “O. Vittori” Observatory (Mt. Cimone). At the gAw-wMO global Station Mon-te Cimone, the first audit by the wCC (“world Calibration Center for Surface Ozone, Carbon Monoxide, Methane and Carbon dioxide” of gAw) was ho-sted in September 2012. This observa-tory was strengthened with a system that monitors the PM1 and PM10 concentrations, permitting to deepen knowledge on atmospheric compo-sition in the region. in july 2012, at the gAw-wMO global station Monte Cimone, the NdiR system for the con-

program, supported by the Lombardy Region under the umbrella of an agre-ement between the Lombardy Region and fLA (Lombardy foundation for the Environment), research activities, in se-veral environmental topics, were per-formed in Stelvio National Park to help understand the complex relationship between climate and glacier (with fo-cus on forni glacier) and to describe the freshwater features and ecology and its interaction with atmosphere. during summer 2012 (july – Septem-ber), a field campaign for atmospheric composition measurements has been carried out at the “guasti” hut (3,265 m a.s.l.) near the Cevedale glacier. in-stallation of ozone analyzer, optical particle counter, swam dual channel monitor, multi angle absorption pho-tometer and a meteorological station permitted to carried out measure-ments of surface ozone, aerosol size distribution (from 280 nm to 10 nm), PM1 and PM10, black carbon and me-

teo parameters. The analyses of atmo-spheric, meteorological and radiative data, allowed to study and describe atmospheric composition and its va-riability in the Stelvio National Park; in addition, cryosphere and atmospheric data analysis permitted to study gla-cier albedo and evaluate the effect of bC deposition in albedo reduction. digital imagines, albedo and ablation data were acquired in order to descri-be the features of the fine and sparse debris on the glacier surfaces and to evaluate the impacts on ice albedo and melting processes. Lake surface, geometry and morpho-logical changes were evaluated by analyzing aerial photos and ortho-photos in the time window 1954-2007 and a lake inventory for the Lombardy sector of the Stelvio National Park was developed. Moreover several field campaigns were performed to describe freshwa-ter features and ecology. The ShARE STELViO project, coordina-ted by giglielmina diolaiuti (University of Milan), ended in december 2012.

Installation of a hydrological station along the glacial stream on Changri Nup Glacier

1.2 Glaciology in Himalaya, Nepal, activities of measuring of

annual snow thickness variation con-tinued on Changri Nup, Mera-Naulek and Pokalde glaciers in order to ela-borate energy and mass balance me-asurements and to assess the glacier contribution to local and regional water supply in the context of climate warming. On Changri Nup glacier, the activities were focused both on the white part and on the debris-covered part of the glacier where analysis of stake measurements, dgPS profiles and mapping around the glacier were carried out. Moreover, in order to im-prove knowledge on hydrological con-ditions, discharge measurements in mountain basins were guaranteed by french researchers (iRd, LThE-LggE). in spring a hydrological station was in-stalled within the glacial stream, inclu-ding stage discharge evaluation and a hydrological modelling of the glacier is being set up by italian researchers (Politecnico di Milano and University of Milan). in Karakorum, Pakistan, field measu-rements were performed on baltoro glacier and in upper indus basin to study the effects of atmospheric ae-rosols, particularly absorbing aerosol (e.g. black carbon and mineral dust), on glacier dynamics, on hydrologic cycle and on water availability. in sum-mer a few field missions were carried out by different national and interna-

tional researchers, in selected areas, in order to evaluate ice ablation in the baltoro and to estimate water dischar-ge in different sections of braldo River (baltoro valley). As reported in the wp1.1, measurements of pollutant/climate-altering compounds (ozone, carbon dioxide, total particle number concentrations) were performed at Askole from August to November al-lowing a first direct characterisation of atmospheric composition variability (including aerosol) in this mountain region. The EC-Earth gCM simulations run under the RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 iPCC scenarios have been analysed to study the future evolution of precipitation in the hKKh (hindu Kush - Karakorum - himalaya). Regional scenarios with the RegCM model from iCTP, for the de-cade 2000-2009 have been produced. high-resolution (3.5 km) simulations with the non-hydrostatic model wRf have been performed to simulate the flood occurred in Pakistan in july 2010. A stochastic rainfall downscaling pro-cedure was implemented which ge-nerates high-resolution precipitation fields from the output of regional cli-mate models. Simulations of hydrolo-gical scenarios were carried out using the climatic inputs from the gCM CCSM3. data from the regional RegCM model are being downloaded to con-duct new hydrological simulations. The ShARE PAPRiKA Karakorum activi-ties are coordinated by Antonello Pro-venzale and Elisa Palazzi (iSAC-CNR).

1.3 water Resources

i n order to improve knowledge on wa-ter quality and quantity in Sagarma-

tha National Park, different research activities were performed. These research activities aim to study the interaction among lakes, wetland and stream habitats at a catchment scale and focus on the key drivers of aquatic system change and their in-teraction with global drivers such as climate using time-series analysis and process modelling at different time scales. At the Pyramid Laboratory-Observatory are continuing the sam-pling activities in the framework of the world data Centre for Precipitation

Chemistry (wdCPC), in synergy with the AbC activities. in order to achieve the final purpose of this programme during the year several activities were begun. in particular, near the Pyramid Laboratory-Observatory an evapori-meter was installed in order to allow a direct measurement of the amount of evaporation at high elevation. A long term monitoring of quality and quantity of rivers and lakes also was performed and data analysis will per-mit to study the hydrochemical and biological variability. These activities are coordinated by Ric-cardo de bernardi (Ev-K2-CNR).

The project was carried out in strong synergy

with the project “Conservation of wild plant biodiversity in the himalaya (Ne-pal)” co-funded by the Municipality of Milan. The first establishment phase of

himalayan Seed bank for basic conser-vation activities of seeds was finalized and the collaboration with local insti-tutes and research centers was streng-thened. This activity is coordinated by grazia-no Rossi (University of Pavia).

The present increase in global tem-peratures is causing vast ecologi-

cal changes, with effects on plant and animal communities. high mountain ecosystems are particularly vulnera-ble to climatic changes. because of growing temperatures, plant species responding to higher temperatures

may shift upwards, altering herbivore habitats, with probable consequen-ces on distribution and numbers of mountain ungulates and, in turn, of carnivores. in this context, the main ShARE activities to monitor the effects of global warming on mammal and plant biodiversity are reported below.

in Nepal, data collected in Sa-garmatha Na-

tional Park on Snow Leopard and Com-mon Leopard were analyzed showing an evident impact of climate change on competition between Snow Leo-pard and Common Leopard. Moreover, the predator-prey system was studied.

in Pakistan, field activities were carri-ed out with the involvement of local students and technicians in order to collect information on numbers/distri-bution of snow leopard, wolf and prey (ibex), at different altitudes, in Central Karakorum National Park (CKNP) and in an intensive sample area (hushey). This activity is coordinated by Sandro Lovari (University of Siena).

NANO-ShARE was installed in Askole, braldo

valley (Northern Areas of Pakistan), in summer, in order to perform field me-asurements on atmospheric composi-tion. A preliminary analysis of the data ac-quired through this system in Askole showed a behaviour of monitored

atmospheric compounds in line with the concentrations observed in other areas of high altitude. however, du-ring the day, the trends of ozone, car-bon dioxide and aerosols show con-centrations exceeding the values of background pollution probably rela-ted to emissions from Askole or from other countries, produced by the fires used for cooking.

The objective difficulties for the start and maintenance of conti-

nuous measurements is a major cau-se of limited knowledge of climate and environmental processes in re-mote, rural and high altitude regions, particularly in developing countries.

in the context, this development of an innovative, technological, integra-ted and portable monitoring system is necessary to obtain qualitative and representative data of climate condi-tions in these areas.

2012 RESULTS

d uring the workshop, “Contribution of science and cooperation to the

sustainable development of the Cen-tral Karakorum National Park”, arran-ged in the framework of SEEd Project, and held in islamabad on june 4-7 2012, a meeting with local stakehol-der involved in water Quality Manage-ment in gilgit-baltistan has been held. Moreover the workshop has been the occasion for sharing project aims and activities with the local communities representatives, who were participa-ting at the meeting.

in order to promote the efficient ma-nagement of freshwater biodiversity and eventually inverse its decline, the project activities aim at improving water quality in the area through two steps: an assessment (and tracking) of the situation and problem areas through the establishment of a water quality monitoring scheme and bu-ilding of capacity to implement it in conjunction with water quality rese-arch; based on this assessment and on the analysis of the data, identification and establishment of effective means to address water quality-related pro-blems in the CKNP region. To reach the above objective, two major action lines have been identified: installation of the water quality laboratory at KiU campus; a survey in basha valley to as-sess the water quality. The action lines have been carried out in tight synergy with SEEd Project.

in order to define the list of the equipment to purchase for the KiU wa-ter Lab, the definition of the parame-ters to be analyzed has been assessed and the chemical and microbiological variables identified. The scientific in-strumentation and consumables nee-ded have been purchased and instal-led during the mission in gilgit of the researchers Andrea Lami (of CNR-iSE) and giacomo Archetti (of Arpa Pie-monte).

Mr. Maisoor Nafees, KiU Phd student in water management, visited italy from february 6 to March 22, for a training course on water quality analysis within the laboratories of CNR-iSE and Arpa Piemonte.

in june, through field works expedi-tion in basha Valley, water samples for chemical and microbiological analysis have been collected. Samples have been collected from water tanks, water taps, streams and springs. 16 sites have been sampled. The analysis of these samples is going to guaranteeing the identification of possible polluting agents and which waters can be con-sidered drinkable.

dried fruits like apricots, apples and grapes, or nuts like almonds and wal-nuts have been the main source of nu-trition for the gilgit-baltistan popula-tion, mainly during the winter season when there is a natural shortage

PiTAM and STigEAC projects

The PiTAM and STigEAC projects started their industrial Research

and Experimental development activi-ties on july 1st, 2012. The beginning of both the PiTAM and STigEAC Staff Trai-ning projects will be on October 1st, 2013. The TESSA project started the industrial Research and Experimental development activities on january 1st 2012, while the AMiCUS project’s ones began on April 30st, 2011.

during the reference year, PiTAM and STigEAC projects have been reformu-lated by the projects team.

The PiTAM project reformulation has been structured in order to allow both the maintenance of the initial scientific objectives, such as those ones deriving from the design of the marine research platforms, and a further strengthe-ning of these goals related not only to the research activities in coastal envi-ronments, but even in shallow coastal aquatic environments (lagoon ecosy-stems, transitional waters, rivers), en-compassing remote and hostile areas.

within the STigEAC project minor changes have been made by the team

of the project proponents and third-party contractors; this project foresees to preserve its main goal related to the development of advanced monitoring and detection systems and integra-ted technologies for studying marine environmental parameters. These in-struments could be installed on the platforms provided by PiTAM project. The strategic objectives identified in the implementation of PiTAM and STi-gEAC projects, and in particular in the industrial Research, Experimental de-velopment and Staff Training activities have been maintained and enhanced. The interaction between these two projects has been strengthened; the advanced monitoring and detection systems and integrated technologies for studying geophysical parameters and environmental conditions of sea, provided by the STigEAC project, will support the the PiTAM project, where a system of integrated platforms will be developed. The integrated platform systems will include the following A+b components:

A) A mother-platform, composed of three sub-platforms (as reported be-low), that could work both synergic way among them or separately, en-hancing their operational capabilities:

a1) Naval sub-platforms: existing units, made available by the Project propo-nents will undergo the appropriate adjustments according to new opera-tional needs of the project. furthermo-

re, these platforms will show innovati-ve features to support the other two platforms, that are part of the mother-platform, in terms of transport, assi-stance and synergistic work.

a2) Modular floating sub-platform (Jack-Up): a self-elevating unit which allows the mechanical coupling of the worktop and the sea bed, up to a head of water in the order of 10/20 meters, which is self-leveling and able to work as an autonomous integrated laboratory. This platform will allow to carry out research activities and tech-nical operations concerning various fields (geophysical, geotechnical and geochemical activities, measurements of the water column parameters, air, etc..), through the assembly of specific mobile and modular laboratories, hou-sed in special containers with sophisti-cated design features.

a3) Integrated modular laboratory sub-platform: the set of modular laborato-ries, that are part of the jack-up, will be able to work independently both abo-ard the naval platform (point a1), inclu-ded in the jack-up structure (point a2), and on the mainland.in particular, we will foresee to realize the following modules:

• Geotechnical module/s• Geophysical module/s • Environmental module/s• Atmospheric module/s• Support, energy, housing and tran-sport module/s.

AMiCUS project

T he AMiCUS project encompasses three main goals:

1) detecting the presence of asbestos and asbestos-cement in Crotone indu-strial area and studying their impacts in waters and coastal sediments. in this framework, the project aims at gradually eliminating this type of pol-lution, with positive effects on the hu-man health, also through the realiza-tion of a pilot project, which has been designed to neutralize these hazar-dous materials promoting innovative techniques of carbonation;

2) creating a monitoring system to as-sess the phenomenon of salinisation of coastal aquifers and the resulting land degradation, with particular focus on the degenerative effect of deserti-fication.This project aims at evaluating the

interactions between marine and co-astal environments and their impacts on the Calabrian coast. Several survey methodologies, sup-ported by the use of giS technology 2.0. specifically created for the project, were carried out to better understand the dynamics of these phenomena.

3) developing modern systems and methods to recycle and to dispose the hazardous wastes (bilge waters, food wastes, wastes from laundry, medical wastes on board, etc.), produced on shipboard, in order to minimize the risk of contamination of coastal wa-ters, particularly in the Calabrian ports of gioia Tauro, Sybaris, and Cetraro. Moreover, an analysis of the state of the art on the existing treatment technologies (high pressure and high temperature systems, chemical tre-atment systems, etc.) is foreseen.

Example of a treatment plant for the wastewater resulting from the dock operations, when it is installed in marinas and shipyards, it provides effluents which can be discharged into the sea or used in the sub-irrigation

2012 RESULTS

R esearch activities have been con-ducted on the glaciers San franci-

sco, Exploradores, Pirámide, San Ra-fael, Tyndall and the main results are reported below:

• glaciological campaigns jointly with the UgN staff in the Maipo’s Lap (gla-ciers Echaurren and San francisco, rock glacier Pirámide and debris cove-red Pirámide), Campo de hielo Norte (Exploradores glacier) and Campo de hielo Sur (Tyndall glacier) were carried out. in these occasion measurement of ablation, superficial speed and ice thickness and measurements by gNSS and georadar were performed.

• The changes in the elevation in the Zona Central and Campos de hielo glaciers were defined through the previous monitoring activity carried out by UgN and through comparison between satellite data, LidAR and dgPS data taken on the ground

• Energy balance for all the glaciers was calculated.

• Snow thickness and SwE (snow wa-ter equivalent) distributed on San Ra-fael glacier were estimated through the acquisition and processing of the

georadar data.

• A National digital database of snow cover was created.

• Pilot areas and locations for the moni-toring of the lap in the central area for the Country were identified and flu-viometric and weather stations were designed and planned. in this frame, all basis information for the definition of a bill of quantities for public tende-ring finalized to realized meteorolo-gical observing instruments were col-lected. Moreover, the guidelines (best prac-tices) for setting up the supraglacial observing network according to the standard ShARE and operation gEUS protocols were identified.

• Capacity building actions of the UgN personnel both on the field and in of-fice about glaciology, meteorology, climatology, remote sensing and topo-graphic measurements were promo-ted.

On december 2012, Ev-K2-CNR delive-red to the dgA the final comprehen-sive report and all the data collected from the abovementioned research activities and studies.

These applications are devoted to identify, define and quantify the con-tributions that natural and anthropic processes (e.g. wildfires, desert dust transport, salt wedge introgression, biosphere-atmosphere and biosphe-re-hydrosphere exchanges, etc.) have in affecting the environmental-clima-tic conditions in the italian Convergen-ce Regions.

in particular, advanced techniques and methodologies (based both on obser-vations and models) have been imple-mented to gather the assessment of the natural and anthropic contribu-tions to the air quality variability in the Convergence Regions, according to the UE directive 2008/50/EC.

Preliminary information on land-water interactions were collected in order to solve important problems in the Convergence Regions such as the in-trogression of the salt wedge affecting the lives of agro-forest ecosystems

especially near the coasts.

A station network for studying the bio-sphere-atmosphere exchanges of pol-lutant and climate-altering trace gases has been designed.

Preliminary activities has been carried out for improving of knowledge on the biosphere-hydrosphere proces-ses occurring along the coast-lines of the Convergence Regions. interaction between natural climatic system/ex-treme events meteo-sea and historical anthropic impacts along the coastal area land-sea, near the mouth of the Volturno River was promoted. tions in the Alps, Apennines, himala-ya-Karakoram, Rwenzori and Andes continued, thanks also to the support of specifically trained local personnel. Studies concerning the installation of new infrastructures and/or the upgra-de of existing stations for climate and environmental monitoring were also performed. This activity is coordinated by URT Ev-K2-CNR.

Measurements of trace gases (green-house and reactive), atmospheric ae-rosol (chemistry and physics) and me-teorological parameters were carried out at the gAw-wMO global stations “O. Vittori” (gAw id: CMN) and “Nepal Climate Observatory – Pyramid” (gAw id: PyR), as a continuation of the activi-ties started within the ShARE project. This activity is coordinated by iSAC-CNR.

A feasibility study and the design of a Reconstruction/Reanalysis (RR) of the past hundred years of the Mediterra-nean Sea climate variability was star-ted. The Mediterranean reanalysis will start in 1958 and other efforts will be

invested in the implementation of cli-mate reconstruction for the previous fifty years. This activity is coordinated by iNgV. An ice core drilling of 32 m was per-formed on the Lys glacier at the Lys Col (Aosta Valley, italy) during the mis-sion carried out in May. The ice core was processed on the Eurocold Lab in diSAT-UNiMib, obtaining the stra-tigraphy and the density profile. Two sites for new ice core drillings were defined (Colle gnifetti, italian Alps and South gasherbrum glacier, Karakorum, Pakistan). This activity is coordinated by diSAT-UNiMib.

five potential key sites in the Central-western Mediterranean basin, able to preserve the marine records for the last 2000 years, were identified. The analysis of the numerical data availa-ble for the gulf of Salerno allowed for identifying the main climatic oscilla-tion for the last 2000 years (Roman Period, Medieval Period, Little ice Age, Modern warm Period). This activity is coordinated by the department of Earth System Science and Envi-ronmental Technologies – CNR and by iAMC-CNR.

T he ShARE geoNetwork platform has been identified as archiving sy-

stem to collect ground based data of Nextdata Project. The access to the information is provi-ded by the metadata catalogue with its upgrades, and the data are stored in dedicated databases. This activity is coordinated by URT Ev-K2-CNR.

Creation and organization of the re-ference database of historical marine and atmospheric data needed to pro-duce the “Reconstruction-Reanalysis” of the Mediterranean Sea for last 100 years begun. This activity is coordina-ted by iNgV.

A specific geodatabase for spatial and non spatial data on drillable glaciers and ice core drillings was created. This activity is coordinated by diSAT-UNi-Mib. An exhaustive archival research on sedimentary cores, drilled in the Me-diterranean basin, was carried out. The comparison between the data collected for the 1517 drilling sites and the information recovered in the scientific literature have allowed for defining the strategy for metadata pu-blishing and the geodatabase for the recording of marine sediments data.

This activity is coordinated by URT Ev-K2-CNR and iAMC-CNR.

The census of the climate data (nu-merical simulations and analysis) that will be made available to the scientific community and users (stakeholders and decision makers) was completed and the construction of the network of numerical data and metadata portals was started. This activity is coordina-ted by CMCC.

The structure and characteristics of the general Portal were defined. in this framework, the establishment of a Center for Numerical Modelling and Earth Observation was started in Kath-mandu, in collaboration with the ShA-RE project. Modelling elaborations will permit to support stakeholders and local go-vernment in the promotion of proper environmental policies. A feasibility study was carried out also in Pakistan in order to establish ano-ther modelling data centre. This activi-ty is coordinated by iSAC-CNR.during the first year, four pilot stu-dies were started: water resources in the himalaya-Karakoram; Changes in terrestrial biodiversity in the north-western italian Alps; Changes in snow cover and the hydrological cycle in the

Biodiversity in the Himalaya

Traditional greenhouse at Chaurikharka village

Particular attention is paid to wild me-dicinal, alpine, subalpine plants and spontaneous relatives of cultivated species (Crop wild Relatives CwR) and landraces, the local varieties cultiva-ted in the Sagarmatha National Park (Everest area), especially if they have peculiar nutritional properties and health benefits.

The conservation of these species will also ensure greater food security and human health for future local gene-rations, while protecting biodiversity, and with the prospect of achieving an eco-sustainable development. This is also in line with one of the main themes of EXPO2015. in particular, the project Conservation of wild plant biodiversity in the himalaya (Nepal) intends to follow these objectives:

• Conservation at the himalayan Seed bank (hSb) of seeds of at least 200 species of useful wildplants as medici-nal species (MAPs), alpine plants, CwR, landraces, agricultural or useful plants. Among these at least 5 should be cul-tivated in agreement with the heads of the villages in Sagarmatha National Park (SNP) and local communities.

• Promotion of village seed banks (fa-mily Seed banks), in order to increase and improve the conservation of the seeds used in farming actions by local people, in order to ensure food safety and to safeguard local agro-biodiver-sity for the future (landraces).

• Transfer to local people of rural areas in SNP of down market techniques and basic instrumentation for long-term storage of seeds of agricultural species and varieties of wild plants used for food, through meetings and demonstrations.

• Promotion of capacity building ac-tions for local institutions and courses for technicians and researchers in Ne-pal and italy in order to provide them the most modern ex situ conserva-tion techniques and to implement sustainable management of natural resources, particularly in mountain and alpine areas.

• Promotion of scientific activities, in order to depth the knowledge on germination ecology of those species collected in SNP, Everest valley, in order to reproduce and cultivate the species of interest.

• Communication actions, locally and at scientific institutions, public opi-nion and young people, with particu-lar focus on high schools and uni-versities, by issuing of press releases, creation of project web pages on the websites of the institutions involved, both in English, italian and Nepalese. The aim is to help people to under-stand the importance of the hSb implementation in Nepal for wild and useful plants long term preservation.

himalayan Seed bank was imple-mented and was realized a mixed

system (photovoltaic, standard and emergency generator) for energy po-wer supplies and energetic indepen-dence of hSb from NAST.

first seed conservation activities, at basic level, were started at himalayan Seed bank, according to the interna-tional standards requested by Mille-nium Seed bank (UK). in particular, 100 samples of seeds of endemic species and medicinal plants, with relative herbarium samples and leaves, were collected during the autumn field mis-sion, carried out by Nepalese resear-chers, and ex situ conservationactions were promoted.

Training course of local staff at NAST, Tribhuvan University and local institu-tions SNP (Ministry of forest and Soil Conservation) on seed collection tech-niques were organized. in particular, for hSb researchers, the cleaning and storage techniques were transmitted,

both in situ and from remote (e-lear-ning) and by study trips at the Univer-sity of Pavia, improving their knowled-ge on seed conservation practices.

A village seed bank, at Chaurikharka, was realized in order to improve agro-biodiversity conservation (landraces varieties) strategies in SNP buffer zone. This activity is focused on the action of single families (about 30) to which the necessary equipments (drum and silica gel) were delivered and the right information about their use were transmitted (September and October 2012). in this framework a young per-son of Chaurikharka Village visited the Lombardy Seed bank, Pavia (italy) in September.

Realization of experimental greenhou-ses for the inhabitants of Chaurikharka Village (equipments given to further 30 families) to improve the cultiva-tion techniques and sustainable use of wildlife medicinal and aromatic plants (MAPs), as well as local vegetables.
