The Providence Center's fiscal year 2008 annual report.

TRANSCRIPT

Page 1: Annual Report FY2008
Page 2: Annual Report FY2008

This year’s annual report is a reflection on hope and re-covery. Each day hundreds of men, women and children come through The Providence Center’s doors in need of

help. Many of them are at a crisis point. They have lost hold of what has brought meaning to their lives; they have forgotten the dreams they had for themselves and the people they love. But even in times of desperation, people find the strength to attain recovery. At the Providence Center we help our clients identify their strengths and learn the tools they need to find their footing and reach their potential. Thirty-nine years of helping people from all walks of life man-age their emotional and physical symptoms has taught us that people with mental health and substance use problems need what we all need to live happy, productive lives—to believe in themselves, to be part of a community, to build strong and trusting relationships, to find hope. The four clients who share their stories with you in this year’s report are no exception. They have faced hard times and have found the strength within themselves to build a bright future.

Please join me in celebrating these four courageous people and the thousands of people who maintain recovery each year.

~ Dale K. Klatzker, PhD, President/CEO

When I was a senior in college, I was diagnosed with schizophrenia. I lost a lot of years before I came to The Providence Center and learned how to manage my illness.

It was the first time that anyone told me that I could have a normal life, that I had choices. I learned how to live independently and to get—and keep—a job.

Today, I live in a Providence Center supported-living apartment where I have many friends. We often eat together, watch television together and go to the movies and bowling together. After all these years, it feels good to have friends I can count on, friends who I know will be there for me whenever I need them.

I wanted to be the person in my family to break the cycle. I got good grades in school and earned a college degree. I got married and had a family. Every day I worked hard to keep it all together, but little by little, things started to

fall apart.

My husband died, and I was feeling sorry for myself. My daughter Sara and I had to move into a much smaller apartment because I couldn’t pay the bills. Sara’s grades went down. I started drinking to numb my pain. Then, one day Sara begged me to stop. She said she missed her “old mom—the one who didn’t drink and fall asleep all the time.” That’s when I called The Providence Center.

At The Providence Center’s Women’s Day Treatment Program, I learned to accept that I am an alcoholic and that I lose control when I drink. I also learned that my illness does not define me as a person. I discovered that I am a loving mom and a capable woman—a person that I can believe in and be proud of.

relationshipsThe truth is that we had lost hope. We wanted what was best

for our son Michael, but we didn’t know how to get it. Both Jovanna and I had to work full time just to make ends meet. It seemed like we spent most of our “family time” dealing with Michael’s behavior, which was affecting our daughter Lydia.

Before he came to The Providence Center, Michael had been in a number of treatment programs that just didn’t work. But The Providence Center’s Child and Family Services program was different—a team of clinicians didn’t just help Michael, they helped our whole family. They came into our home, helped us to understand Michael and taught us how to manage his behavior by managing our own. Today, Michael is a happy child. We have hope for a bright future for him and for our family.

hopeNearly three years ago, I walked through The Providence Center School doors for the

first time. Back then, I was more of a hollow shell than a person. I hadn’t been to school regularly in over a year, and I found myself facing a depression that seemed almost impossible to overcome. I hated myself, but even more so, I hated the fact that I could not discover a way to right myself and be happy again.

After just a few days at The Providence Center School, things began turning around. The students and staff welcomed me and made me feel like my life was worth living. My grades quickly improved and, for the first time in years, I felt accepted and happy.

Last June, I stood on the stage at The Providence Center School and accepted my high school diploma—something I never thought would happen. I had finally achieved my personal goals: I found friendship; I found love; I found real happiness. I found hope.

“I had finally achieved my personal goals: I found friendship; I found love;

I found real happiness. I found hope.”

The Providence Center received a grant from the Rhode Island Department of Corrections to help people discharged from prison with a mental health diagnosis transition successfully back into the community.

acute careIn partnership with MHCA/OASIS, The Providence Center established a WARM line, staffed by peer specialists, to provide support for people experi-encing mental health problems.

child and family services The Providence Center School implemented the Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) program, a statewide systems approach to establishing the social culture and behavioral supports needed for all children to achieve both social and academic success.

The Providence Center School celebrated its 20th anniversary at The Providence Center’s Annual

Meeting last December. Freddie Bettinger, Ha-ven Miles and Pamela Rubovits, whose vision and hard work helped The Providence Center School become a reality, were honored at the event.

The Providence Center’s Early Childhood Institute secured a contract with Head Start programs in the Providence area to provide consultation and education services for Head Start staff members.

Child and Family established a Multisystemic Therapy team, an intensive family- and commu-nity-based treatment service for youth with com-plex clinical, social and educational challenges.

Open access scheduling was established to pro-vide children who are Providence Center clients with a same-day psychiatric appointment. Open access reduces lapsed medication and improves treatment outcomes.

residential servicesThe Providence Center opened its first supportive recovery housing program. This program provides transitional housing for graduates of The Provi-dence Center’s substance use treatment programs with the goal of helping these clients to success-fully transition back into the community.

Despite drastic funding cuts to our programs and services, our dedicated staff touched the lives of over 10,000 people this fiscal year. As we reflect on Fiscal Year 2008, we see a year filled with innovation and creativity driven by one purpose—to provide exceptional care for our clients as we work to adjust to an ever-changing behavioral healthcare environment.

The Providence Center became a provider in the Access to Recovery program, which provides re-covery services for individuals released from the Rhode Island Adult Correctional Institution and the Rhode Island Training School, parents identified by the Department of Children Youth and Families Protective Services with substance use problems and homeless people recovering from addiction problems.
