OUR PROGRAMS
MISSION
TEEN ARTS PROGRAM (TAP)
Teens access NYC cultural institutions and explore the arts as a potential academic or professional goal through museum visits, internships, and portfolio mentorships.
ARTS MENTORING PROGRAM (AMP)
PARENTS AND CHILDREN TOGETHER WITH ART (PACT)
FREE ARTS DAYS (FAD)
Youth ages 6-13 are provided with regular opportunities to express themselves creatively and engage with positive adult role models.
Families with children 3+ are guided by volunteer mentors as they create art projects designed to increase parental involvement and positive forms of family communication.
Youth ages 6-13 pair with volunteer buddies at a “pop-up” arts festival for a day of art-making, exploring a variety of art projects with a supportive adult mentor.
CULTURAL ENRICHMENT
To enrich their involvement in other Free Arts programs, every child and family is offered complimentary opportunities to attend museums, live performances, and other cultural events.
Free Arts NYC provides underserved children with a unique combination of educational arts and mentoring programs that help them foster the self-confidence and resiliency needed to realize their fullest potential.
NEED
OUR SOLUTIONOur programs combine art and mentoring because research proves:
• Mentored youth are significantly less likely to engage in risky behaviors such as skipping school or abusing drugs
• Low-income youth involved in the arts are more likely to attend college, obtain employment, and give back to their communities
OUR IMPACT
98% of AMP youth believe when they grow up they’ll do something important
SELF ESTEEM
99% of students who attended a FAD felt pride in their work
VISUAL LITERACY & EDUCATION
100% of Portfolio Mentees were accepted to at least one high school of their choice
PROBLEM SOLVING
POSITIVE ATTITUDES
99% of PACT parents helped their children re-frame problems into opportunities
Mother & child explore an ‘Inspiration Image’ in PACT Early Years.

THE YEAR IN REVIEWROB PRUITT INSPIRES 2ND ANNUAL BRANT FOUNDATION FREE ARTS DAYIn September, The Brant Foundation welcomed 97 children from the Department of Homeless Services to Greenwich, CT for a remarkable day filled with fun and art inspired by Rob Pruitt and supported by Tory Burch.
ANNUAL ART AUCTIONOur 16th Annual Art Auction celebrated Rashid Johnson with Beats By Dre on April 29th, 2015. The exciting evening saw over 400 guests and raised a record-breaking $1.1 million in support of our mission.
ART FROM THE HEARTOur annual exhibition showcased the work of Free Arts children & families at the Bronx Museum of the Arts on June 10. Hundreds of projects created during the year were displayed.
NEW TRAINING PROGRAMAfter two years of working with The Robert Bowne Foundation’s Evaluation Institute, our staff produced a new training manual and set of core “best practice” trainings. Using these resources, we re-trained all Volunteers and Teaching Artists, developed a set of fee-for-service professional development workshops, and led workshops for organizations including the NYC Arts in Education Roundtable and National Guild for Community Arts Education.

SANDRA’S STORY: A DECADE IN FREE ARTSIt was 2006 when Sandra first joined Free Arts, enrolling in our Arts Mentoring Program. As a shy, yet curious 7 year old, Sandra learned to tap into her creative side and discovered an early affinity for fashion illustration.
Sensing her potential, the Teaching Artist who led her AMP group, and the Director of Educational Services at her program site, recommended she apply for Free Arts’ Portfolio Mentorship program. It was in Portfolio Mentorship that Sandra first met her mentor Angie, and the two quickly became inseparable. In Sandra’s words, “My mentor and I make the perfect pair. We’re definitely connected, I always love talking with her while we work.”
Prior to Portfolio Mentorship, Sandra planned on completing her current general academic track and continuing to pursue her artistic goals on the side, but with a mentor in her corner she decided to aim higher. Using the portfolio she had worked on throughout the year, Sandra applied and was accepted to the competitive arts program at her high school.
Now 17, eyeing graduation, Sandra remains eager to continue her artistic pursuits. With her sights set on attending an art school, she says, “I have a bunch of colleges that I want to go to. They’re very competitive, but I’m ready for that.”
