Executive Summary The Textile Engineering, Chemistry & Science Department continues to be a major contributor to the College of Textiles vision of being the global leader in textile education, research, and innovation. The high level of faculty and student honors and awards demonstrate the quality and success of TECS programs and the substantial research output indicates the impact of faculty and students on global textile knowledge. The attached appendix lists detailed information on faculty publications and presentations. Enhance the success of our students through educational innovation

Senior design course for TE/TT students incorporates academic and recurring industrial inputs

The NC State SACS accreditation resulted in the development of a quality enhancement plan (QEP), and the theme for the next 10 years is Creative and Critical Thinking, now called Th!nk. The TE program faculty has decided to be one of the pilot programs for vertically integrating creative and critical thinking throughout the curriculum. Six TE faculty went through training in May to implement in TE 105, TE 110, TE 303, TE 463, TE 404, TE/TT 401, TE/TT 402. This year George Hodge (TT 486) and Jon Rust are going through Think training.

Enhance scholarship and research by investing in faculty and infrastructure

Dr. Kevin Golovin hired as an Assistant Professor and will start in Fall 2018

New TE position approved and search committee formed to search for in the Fall.

The college invested in the new departmental office layouts to foster more interaction as well as additional offices as the departments grow.

Enhance interdisciplinary scholarship to address grand challenges of society

The University defines the Grand Challenges of Society to be health and well-being, educational innovation, energy and environment, and safety and security.

Health and well-being: TECS faculty (Emiel DenHartog) working with TATM, CNR, and CALS faculty to develop materials that provide mosquito bite proof function while being comfortable and/or functional in their use

Health and well-being: TE/TT Faculty member (Jess Jur) and his research term is developing products directly associated with 'Advancing Health Informatics'. They have employed low cost strategies toward vigilant health monitoring which provide a paradigm shift for the broad dissemination of the health care.

Energy and environment: TE/TT Faculty member (Jess Jur) has been involved with the NC State GRIP on Nanomaterials for Water Resource Improvement, for which his team has begun to worked with NC State and RTI researchers on new technologies for water purification (Provide access to clean water).

TE and ECE students developed a “smart shirt” to monitor dehydration

Health and well-being: TE and ECE students developed a canine “smart shirt” to monitor EKG, heart rate and breathing

Energy and environment: Erica Ford working with Terrence Gardner in Soil Science on the use of nonwovens to support water remediation

Energy and environment: PCC Faculty (Richard Kotek) working to develop a process that will allow to produce fuels by selective catalytic degradation of polyethylene (used for making grocery bags) and polyolefins.

Energy and environment: TE Faculty member (Xiangwu Zhang) is developing high-capacity, long-life lithium-sulfur batteries for high-performance energy storage.

Educational innovation: vertical integration of QEP critical and creative thinking into TE program

Educational innovation: TE faculty member (Warren Jasper) is using Raspberry Pis as a low-cost high-reliability tool for taking and acquiring data than can be later analyzed and visualized. He has been using this in several classes.

Dr. Jeffrey A. Joines became the permanent Department Head (01/03/2017).

Dr. Mellissa Pasquinelli was made Associate Department Head (Director of Graduate Programs) 08/25/2017)

Dr. Russell E. Gorga was made Associate Department Head (Director of Undergraduate Programs) 02/01/2017)

Geoffrey Scott became the TECS lab manager working closely with senior design.7/1/2016. Recommendations and concerns for the future of your unit These concerns were taken from the annual reports of the faculty except for the first one.

Concern of why Bill Oxenham and Harold Freeman’s salary was a $200k bridge loan for two years when those faculty are in the TECs department permanently. What will happen a year from now, TECS will lose $200K out of their budget hurting any chance of TAs and/or new hires? I still do not understand where their money is located and why it was not moved into the department.

Concern that traditional textile science knowledge will be lost due to faculty retirements in the immediate future. We are already in trouble if we cannot borrow some positions to search before they retire.

With three faculty going on phased retirement, they are not picking up anymore graduate students. Also, Tonelli and Michielsen (who will retire Jan or May of 2019) are no longer accepting graduate students.

Concern with high teaching loads (more TAs needed) if the college wants the TECS dept to continue to grow research funding.

Concern with recruitment and retention in PCC Program. The PCC numbers are down again this year. Hopefully with new faculty hires we can bolster the enrollment.

Concern with need for TE graduate courses due to loss of 1.5 FTE faculty and many of the TE faculty are in administration cutting their teaching down. Most of the TE faculty are not able to teach graduate level courses because of the burden of covering the undergraduate courses.

Concern of losing Kent Hester and what that might affect our recruitment and retention. This was concern that several faculty expressed in their annual reports.

Your proposed Unit’s Goals for the 2016/2017 academic year

Work on balancing the faculty workload and trying to reward those that are doing more than their share or rebalance.

Begin planning to replace expected faculty retirements with the help of the college and Provost.

Goal of changing the RPT process Recommendations on how the Dean can personally assist you and/or your unit more effectively

Continue to enhance the transparency from the college to the department.

Like to talk to the Provost about borrowing a couple of positions over the next two years to get people in place before they retire in textile science.
