What a fantastic and exciting end to what at Christmas was looking like a long and frustrating season. To think at the half way mark of the season the 1st XI had won only one and a half matches and that they would play a major role in the fi nals is an extraordinary effort and very pleasing.

On the fi eld the Club has had one of its most successful seasons since its inception. 4th in the Club Championship was a fantastic result which refl ected well on the changes in direction taken during the last pre-season.

Contributing factors were:

• Appointing Kevin Hannett as Captain of the 4th XI to make this eleven more competitive through the infl ux of senior players

• Appointment of Stuart Cann as the Captain of the 2nd XI

• Recruitment of Matthew Hayward

• Return from retirement of Aaron Kellett

• Appointment of Anthony Amalfi and Gerard Sleeman as Senior Coach and Assistant Coach.

The performance of the 1st XI since Christmas was absolutely fantastic and demonstrated the old saying that “a champion team is better than a team of champions”. Right from the fi rst ball that was bowled in Ballarat to the last ball of the Semi-fi nal the 1st XI players made their own mark on the competition, which nearly culminated in a Grand Final appearance.

Their effort in outplaying and easily beating the top team in the Qualifying Final was a great team effort. The Semi Final match was a great cricket contest thanks to the batting efforts of Matthew Elliott, Matthew Hayward and Dan Davies and the tireless bowling performances of Brad Knowles and Sean Pietersz.

The 3rd XI once again made the Finals after fi nishing the season on top of the ladder and they also made the one-day Grand Final again. The continued successful results of this team are a great tribute to Warren Roberts. Now closing in on 400 games with the Club, Warren does a fantastic job teaching, cajoling and mentoring all players who move into and out of the 3rd XI.

While the 2nd and 4th XI’s didn’t make the fi nals, they were certainly lot more competitive than previous seasons. The 4th XI started in a blaze and spent the whole season in the top six, until losing the last round. The 2nd XI was well led by Stuart Cann in his fi rst season as Captain and just missed the fi nals. By seasons end they were playing some terrifi c attacking cricket that will stand them all in good stead for next season.

One big hole that we need to fi ll next season is the loss of Matthew Elliott as a result of his decision to play cricket for South Australia next season. Matthew has been an outstanding player not only for Victoria but also Collingwood and Camberwell.I have personally been witness to some of the best batting seen in Premier/ District cricket by Matthew on a number of occasions, especially his 153 not out in the 1992/93 Grand Final and his unbelievable 201 in this years Semi Final. Melbourne CC certainly

brings out the best in Matthew.

Since arriving at Collingwood as a raw and shy sixteen year old, Matthew has let his bat do his talking and he will eventually be remembered as one of the great Victorian cricketers. It has been a privilege to have him play at the Camberwell Magpies.

On behalf of everyone at the Club, I wish Matthew, Megan and the boys all the best in their new and exciting life living in Adelaide. If or when they decide to return they know the door is always wide open at the CSG.

There is a lot of hard work and toil that goes into operating this cricket club and there are a number of people who have worked tirelessly in the last twelve months including:

• The Coaching Staff of Anthony Amalfi , Gerard Sleeman and Adrian Morrissey

• The Scorers and Team Managers including Tony Grace, John Hurse, Ric Pearson, Alex Roberts, David Sykes, Joe Carneli, Scoreboard Attendants (Andrew Coughlin, Tim Everist, Nick Trapani, Matt Delfi na, Nic Daish)

• Bev Sleeman and her family for continually producing high quality afternoon teas and rolls.

• Tom Reynolds for being our Club Patron.

• All members and team managers of the Junior Section, especially Lawrie McMahon who continues to do a fantastic job looking after the Juniors.

• All members of the Senior Committees & Sub- Committees.

Another change for this season was the appointment of Lisa Emrose as our Cricket Administration Manager. Lisa has done a fantastic job in her fi rst season. She has added much needed strategic insight at Committee level and has worked hard to re-establish a number of key sponsorship relationships as well as introducing a couple of new sponsors to the Club.

Added to this, Lisa along with Paul Jeffries and Anthony Hall have spent a lot of time improving our Web Site, Magpie Mail Newsletter and arranging for weekly articles and news to be published in the Local Newspapers as well as interviews in the electronic media.

Lisa also organised a very well attended Champers & Pampers Day for the females involved with the Club which was a raging success that included champagne, beauty therapy and lots of foot massages, thanks to Leanne Thomas and Anna Williams.

We continued our strong working partnership with the City of Boroondara and thanks to the tireless work of our curator Gordon McQueen we were once again able to enjoy and use high quality playing and training facilities.

Gordon has now retired and his curating skills and work will be greatly missed. He has set a high standard and we are currently working with the Council to fi nd a suitably qualifi ed replacement. Good Luck Gordon from everyone.

I would again like to acknowledge the work of Mark Juler and Nigel Fernando from Parks & Gardens for their ongoing assistance and involvement with the Club.

I would also like to thank both Judith Voce – Mayor and Coral Ross – Ward Councillor, for their contribution and attendance at several of our social functions and also their ongoing advice and guidance on Council matters.

Judith is now no longer involved with the Council and the Club wishes her well in the next chapter of her life. Added to this, John Nevins previously Director of Infrastructure, who has been a great help, has moved onto the City of Kingston and we wish John all the best in his new role.

The City of Boroondara is still working on the design and feasibility of the CSG Social Rooms redevelopment. In addition the CSG Master Plan has been re-approved by Council which will see new permanent netting erected to minimise the risk of cricket balls going into the surrounding roads. I would like to thank the Landscape & Design Division for all of their input and assistance with both of these projects.

On the sponsorship front, I would like to thank the following companies for their generous fi nancial contributions and assistance throughout the season including:

• The Beehive Hotel

• Glenferrie Hotel

• Cannon Toyota

• Jellis Craig

• Cyan Press

• INFOman P/L

• Peter Warner Marketing (now Primary Edge Marketing)

• Colin Thomas Painting

• LAUNCHTWO PEOPLE

• Beasley and Co.

• Hume & Hovell Cricket Ground

It takes a substantial amount of revenue for the Club to break even each year and this would not be possible without the generous support of these sponsors. We are always looking for new sponsors or supporters so any help in this area would be gratefully appreciated.

Once again the Match Day Ball Sponsorship and Jack Ryder Club also helped to raise and contribute revenue for the Club and I thank everyone involved for their ongoing support and involvement.

The highlight of the season from an off fi eld perspective was no doubt the Annual Ball & Auction, which this season was held at the MCG. All attendees had the wonderful opportunity to indulge in pre-dinner drinks on the hallowed MCG turf, which was a real buzz and great start to the night.

The success of the night can be attributed to the work and involvement of Peter Hannan and his Organising Committee cohorts

in Bridie Culhoun, Fiona Hunt, Sam Gavin and Lisa Emrose. Thanks guys, a great night was had by all and the Club really appreciated the time and effort you spent in organising and running this night.

Next season we celebrate ten years of the Camberwell Magpies Cricket Club and we have already commenced planning a number of activities to celebrate this milestone.

In closing, I am looking forward to the forth-coming season with a great deal of excitement given the way we fi nished this season. There is a great opportunity for everyone to build on the successes of this season to establish the CMCC as a strong Club in the Premier Cricket competition and this can only be achieved by everyone working together.

Thank you to everyone involved with the Club and “Go Pies” in 2005/2006!!

Sponsorship in Sport continues to be an increasingly competitive fi eld. Given these conditions, Camberwell Magpies Cricket Club are proud to retain the loyalty of a number of businesses who have chosen to continue their relationship with the Club via Sponsorship during the 2004/2005 season. We were also pleased to develop new relationships with businesses in the community this season. The Community Business attachments are vital to the successful operation of the Camberwell Magpies. We will continue to work solidly on building awareness of the value of our sponsors products and services throughout our community and ask for your ongoing support of the following valued businesses:

Cannon ToyotaJeff Halsall at Cannon Toyota joined us for another season as a major sponsor, continuing a relationship spanning more than 10 years. The association with the Camberwell Magpies has produced real business benefi ts for Cannon with our community benefi ting from the great service offered by Jeff’s staff.Their continuing loyalty to our Club is greatly appreciated.

Jellis CraigJellis Craig joined the Camberwell Magpies this season as a major sponsor. Damien Davis has been extremely supportive of the alliance and a genuine pleasure to deal with.Since its inception in 1992, Jellis Craig has maintained a strong commitment to the wider community, with a longstanding relationship with the National Breast Cancer Foundation and mutually benefi cial alliances with educational institutions and sporting clubs. The arrangement with Jellis Craig means that any Camberwell Magpies Cricket Club player/supporter, who sells a property through the Agency, also receives a fi nancial reward and an additional donation for the Club.

A big thankyou to Paul Williamson of Jellis Craig who acted as Auctioneer for our Annual Ball at the MCG. Paul’s obvious auctioneering talent and bursting enthusiasm ensured the Auction was both fun and profi table!

A huge thankyou to Damien Davis, Paul Williamson and Paul Keane (Director Glen Iris) for their support this season.

The Glenferrie HotelGlenferrie Hotel is now one of the CMCC’s major sponsors. The Club used this Hotel for a number of key functions including the Trophy Day and enjoyed many post match celebrations during the fi nals series.

The key contact is Stephen Beaumont and the partnership between the Club and the Hotel was established thanks to Mark Dwyer.

It is anticipated that the partnership will be enhanced for the forth coming season and the Club is looking forward to spending more time in the newly refurbished Glenferrie Hotel.

INFOMANRussell Thomas, through his business INFOMAN continued to sponsor the Club for a fi fth year. INFOMAN specialises in Information Project Management. The company is in its fi fth year and Russell has built it into a rapidly thriving business. We thank Russell for his investment in the Club again this season.

Peter Warner Marketing – now Primary Edge Marketing. Season 2003/04 marked 50 years of service to the Camberwell and Camberwell Magpies Cricket Clubs for Peter Warner. Peter also continues to service the Club through a generous Sponsorship by his Company Primary Edge Marketing.

The Club established two Development Squads during the season: – The Matthew Elliott Squad for CMCC Junior players and the elite Emerging Magpies Squad selected from talented U 15 & U 16 boys mainly from within the Inner East region.

Peter Knight who has Cricket Victoria Level 2 Coaching Accreditation, and Degrees in Human Movement and Sport Management, was chosen as Development Coach for these two groups.

Matthew Elliott Squad

The squad of twenty was formed to continue the development of each player’s skills over four sessions in November and December on turf wickets at CSG. With players aged from 10 to 16 participating, the sessions were structured to include drills incorporating the various aspects of the game and these were very well received by the players with distinct improvement being seen by the end of the period.

Assistant coaches and a number of parents helped during the program and a highlight was the fi nal session in which Matthew Elliott spoke to the players on the requirements of playing cricket and particularly the need to have fun and enjoyment in playing, as the good periods in a player’s life were often followed by times of very much less success.

We are indebted to Don & Anne McQueen of the Hume & Hovell Cricket Group who provided a scholarship for one squad member to attend a three day live in coaching camp at Strath Creek in January. The McQueens are very strong supporters of the CMCC and we thank them enormously for their generosity. Karl Wissell was chosen from the Group as the worthy recipient of the scholarship for his enthusiasm and attention to listening and learning from his time with the Matthew Elliott Squad.

Emerging Magpies Squad

A group of sixteen players was chosen in January mainly from the Inner East Pathway region U15 and U16 squads to join the Emerging Magpies to attend additional sessions for further development and honing of their skills.

Peter Knight fi lmed each player over the fi rst two sessions in batting, bowling and wicket keeping where appropriate with each player being taken through the fi lm clip and receiving individual attention with their own game. The players will receive their own individual CD which they can use to improve their skills at the end of the program.

Further indoor sessions are being held through June, July and August for this elite group in which particular advice is being provided to each player in a very practical sense. Peter and new Senior Coach Aaron Kellett are conducting the sessions with excellent assistance and advice from CV Regional Manager Rhys Miller and Inner East U16 Dowling Coach Terry Hahn. We thank these people very much for their input into helping the players improve their skills.

A highlight for this group will be the attendance of Bushranger Coach Greg Shipperd at a July session to talk about the way forward for players who are keen to prepare properly and progress to the optimum of their ability. A further highlight is a scheduled visit to the Victorian Institute of Sport (VIS) in August to have a look at their elite cricket development program.

At the end of the program it is hoped that this group of players will be very well prepared to continue their development to being able to compete well in senior ranks.

My personal thanks together with those of the Club to Peter Knight for his preparation, enthusiasm and attention to detail in establishing and subsequently running these two programs throughout 2004/05 on behalf of the CMCC. A job very well done.

Outstanding Club Service

Congratulations to Warren Roberts, the worthy recipient of the Vern Wilcox Award for season 2004/05.

A journey through Warren’s career shows a man of enormous dedication to the sport and a willingness to contribute well beyond what has ever been expected of him both as a player and an administrator.

CAREER HISTORY

380 Games Played

1968: Commenced cricket at North Balwyn Methodists under 14’s (when he was 9 years old).

Other non- district clubs he played at included North Balwyn Primary School, North Balwyn Cricket Club Seniors, and Wesley College.

1973/74: Commenced with Collingwood CC Dowling Shield side, being the last player Jack Ryder invited to play in the seniors before he died.

1977: At 18 years of age was invited to train with Hawthorn Football Club, but decided to concentrate on his cricketing career.

January 1978: Represented Victoria under 19’s at the Australasian carnival in New Zealand (captained that side in a practice match in Dec 1977 at the MCG)

1980: Selected in a State Second XI game (which was completely washed out without a ball being bowled and was never selected again!)

Late 70’s and 80’s: Played 80 First XI games

Mid 1980’s: Appointed to Collingwood CC Committee becoming the youngest ever club delegate to VCA. Warren remained as such for 12 years and was given VCA life membership in the late 1990’s.

1989-92: CCC Captain Second XI, including Premiership in 1990/91.

Early 1990’s: Youngest person ever appointed on the VCA Pennant Committee whilst also captaining the Seconds.

1993-95: CCC Captain Third XI

1995/96: Last President of CCC

1996/97: First President of CMCC.

1996-99: Ran Milo Have-a-Go program

1998: Left the CMCC committee to return to playing as Third XI captain.

Out of 12 years of captaining at both CCC and CMCC Warren’s teams have only once fi nished lower than 5th.

He has captained one two-day (1990/1991) and one one-day premiership (2003/2004) and been in four other grand fi nals. He has also participated in another two premierships as a player.

On refl ection, if Warren had the chance to play with any cricketer in the world he would have liked to have played with Ian Botham. He believes that with someone like Botham in his side you could be guaranteed there would be always something happening on the ground!

Congratulations to Warren, and our gratitude for his outstanding service to Cricket.

1st XI Captains Report

Season 2004/2005 was, in truth, split into two half’s. The fi rst half of the season was very ordinary for a side that had all the talent and experience to really make a statement to rest of the competition - that this side was a genuine fi nals chance! With one win and a tie vs Carlton we went into the Christmas break second last on the ladder.

A defi ning moment for the 1st XI came at the conclusion of the Essendon game where we saved an outright result to bat all day for a score of 300+. This day proved a lot to the lads that if you’re really willing to have a go, things can change. At the conclusion of play that night we, as a fi rst XI, got together on the ground and had a heart to heart talk about where we thought we could improve and how we could put words into action. The team went into the Christmas break with a chance to come back with a fresh start to the New Year.

The New Year was to prove the tonic for the team, with new team plans and goals in place and a spirit, that as captain, you would love to bottle and carry it around with you 24/7. We took on all before us. We beat everyone except the Saints and gave ourselves a fi nals chance with one game to go. Not only did we have to win our one day fi xture against North Melbourne in the last round, we had to rely on three other teams, who were ahead of us, to all lose. We certainly kept our end of the bargain with a Brad Knowles inspired spell of express pace to rip the Nth Melbourne batting line up out for just over 100. We then wiped their total off in no time, to get the six points to give us a chance of staying in the fi nals race. As the afternoon went on, we all sat around our change rooms, waiting by Russell Thomas’s mobile phone, getting update after update. One by one each side we needed to lose lost and all of a sudden we were in the fi nals! The feeling amongst the group who were there when the fi nal piece of the puzzle was put in place was irreplaceable. We had made it into sixth place and were a real chance to go all the way! The team was full of confi dence and form.

The fi rst fi nal was against University at their home ground. We played to our plans and bowled excellent to have Uni all out for less than 200. As with any fi nal, chasing can be hard, and we held our nerve to reach our target with 5 wickets in hand. We were into the Semi and loving it. We had in-form Melbourne at the Albert Ground to contend with to book a place into the Grand Final.

The Semi Final was one the most epic games I have been involved in. We took it up to Melbourne from the outset. We batted fi rst to set a big total in quick time to give ourselves every chance of bowling them out. We certainly did that with some brilliant batting from our top order and one of the best innings you could witness from Matthew Elliott (201). We made a massive 380+ score, with eight overs at Melbourne’s top order that night, to grab a wicket or two. As it turned out we were able to get one and were away on

our mission of ten wickets to win the game. Day two was to be the biggest roller coaster ride days play I have ever been involved in. At lunch on Day two, Melbourne were in total control. They were 2/200 with two full sessions to go to get the runs. But we had come to far to not fi ght back! By afternoon tea we were the team on top, as Melbourne lost a few wickets, had only four wickets remaining and a 100 runs to get. We made a couple of vital breakthroughs and all we needed was two more wickets and then we were a chance to win the premiership! We tried everything. Our own version of “brave heart” Knowlesy and Sean Pietersz gave everything at the bowling crease and so did the whole side in the fi eld. But to the heart break of the side we just couldn’t get those fi nal two wickets that were needed to win the game.

I would like to thank the entire senior playing group for their commitment to the team. To the coaching panel for their tireless work, with the up coming future stars of Magpie land. To the entire Committee for their thankless task of the day to day running of the Club, just to see all your faces when we made the fi nals was priceless. To all the Captains of the Club thank you for your support and efforts. To Tony Grace our scorer. Mate I cannot thank you enough for all stats and data you make my job so much easier. Also to John (Speedie) Hurst for being the Team Manager. Thank you for your commitment to the side week in week out.

Now some individual performances that need to be mentioned.Matt Hayward: Record breaking year for Haysy, most runs ever scored in a season for the club. Two scores of 180 vs Fitzroy Doncaster followed up the next week the same score against Ringwood. Truly a remarkable season.

Matt Elliott: 201 in the semi fi nal against Melbourne. Also joint Best Player of the fi nals. Simon Hill: Outstanding season with 600+ runs, batting at number three.Brad Knowles: Outstanding bowling performances on a number of occasions.103 not out vs Frankston. Joint Best Player of the fi nals. Sean Pietersz: Outstanding bowling performances. Leading wicket taker and winning the bowling average. These are all great rewards for the time you put into your body.

A special little note to our own David (Beardo) Beardsley. Beardo, at the end of season, announced his retirement from cricket. Mate you will be sorely missed by your teammates and club, you are a great mate to us all and will always be welcomed back with open arms. Thanks for your efforts.

2nd XI Captains Report

The seconds had an enjoyable year with improved personal and team performances Thanks to all the guys who played throughout the season - you’re a terrifi c bunch of blokes and you’re attitude and support certainly made my job a lot easier.

It would be remiss of me not to thank several people:Rick Pearson - scoring, team managing, playing and medical advice, thanks mate - keep bringing your whites, you’ll get a run.

Lisa Emrose - for your administrative and organisational support, thanks again.

Anthony “Malf” Amalfi - thanks for encouraging me to go around again and your support and friendship throughout the year - it was much appreciated.

Polly - what can I say, its been a pleasure.

Lloyd “Mongo” Devlin - thanks for you leadership.

Matthew “Patty” Rafter - for graciously stepping aside, you’re a terrifi c clubman.

The Committee and Support personnel.

Highlights:-

We set out with the objective of ensuring that we performed the “basics” consistently well and to that extent we were able to achieve this, marginally missing out on the fi nals - I hope this is incentive enough for the “magoos” to go one step further next year.

Team performances that stand out :-

• nail biting win against Melb. Uni (Tommy a ton and Dwp a dozen off the last over).

• losing 4 for 1 against Northcote and getting across the line.

• having the loss against Essendon where we risked it all to try and win - that’s what good teams / clubs do - we improved most after that game.

• outright against Hawthorn - sweet!

• winning in reduced overs against Frankston

• good team performances against Footscray and Nth Melb

• Brossy’s insightful comments and Bert’s aggression against Prahran - “Spirit of Cricket” and sledging lives on.

• Mark Hardy’s debut games - unbelievable fantastic cameo of hitting against Hawthorn, reporting to game injured courtesy of an errant elbow to the head in local swimming pool and forgetting gloves (keeping) and bat.

To “Dwp” and “Stewy” congratulations on winning the Inaugural Stuart Cann 2nd Eleven (can I say that Whale?) Best & Fairest. I hope you can establish and maintain a regular spot in the one’s.

Also to Mongo and Huddo who had outstanding years.

Will and Brossy - thanks for you’re match day senior support, keep pursuing playing good one’s cricket.

(Thommo - you’re still my favorite - I expect a big pre-season and bigger things from you next season.)

To all the other young blokes keep developing your game and work hard - the rewards are worth it!

Thanks again

Stuart Cann

3rd XI Captains Report

The third eleven was a bit older/more experienced this year and performed accordingly. The home and away season saw us record eleven wins (two of them outright) and three draws to fi nish on top of the ladder. (Two washouts on day two of games saw us robbed of achieving very gettable targets and, in the other draw, we had 21 overs to get the last two wickets but could only get one).

In the one day competition fi nal at the Albert Ground, with eight overs to go in both innings Melbourne were 4/138 and we were 4/148 chasing. However we were outplayed in the fi nal eight overs of each innings and lost by 29 runs.

In the fi rst fi nal of the two day competition we were dismissed for a disappointing 228 (the top eight batsmen each reached double fi gures but no one could reach 42). The bowlers were under pressure before the game with two out due to school commitments and Sleeman out of the fi nals for the second year running (this time after standing on a nail). This was compounded when Rafter injured himself whilst batting and was unable to bowl. Lancaster, Doyle and Hanley toiled manfully and at 8/194, with the new ball only four overs old, victory seemed possible. Ringwood gave us a chance soon afterwards, which we failed to grasp. Unfortunately they didn’t give us any more.

The semi fi nal against Melbourne was a high pressure, high standard game and we did extremely well to bowl out their experienced side for only 211 in 86 overs. The eleven overs before stumps proved disastrous as we slumped to 4/28. Day two saw us fi ght on admirably but fall short by 29 runs. This was the second time against the strong Melbourne team that we had outplayed them for all but a small portion of the game but still lost – a good albeit hard lesson to learn at the end of a season.

Highlights of the season were many and included:- • The CMCC all eleven all wicket partnership record of 271

(unbroken) by Coghlan (145 not out) and Hanley (105 not out) in round 3 against Fitzroy-Doncaster.

• The CMCC 3rd XI record opening partnership of 164 by Alex Thomson (101) and Julian Black (73) in round 11 against South Melbourne.

• Other centuries by Nick Hutton and Coghlan (unfortunately for the third eleven we had one of Matt Hutton, Nick Hutton or Alex Thomson in each of the home and away rounds but none of them played enough games in the thirds to qualify for the fi nals).

• The fi ve wicket haul by Matt Hutton.

• Mark Hardy’s efforts behind the stumps when we were without a wicketkeeper.

• The players willingness to not just play but play positively in the three rain affected matches (all of which we won).

The batting was generally consistent with different players performing when it was their turn (there wasn’t many two day games which were not rain affected this season). Matthew Coughlan was a worthy winner of the batting average and was unfortunate to miss 5 or 6 games through injury. Julian Black and Ben Hanley also performed consistently and the players down from the seconds often performed well in their few games for us.

The bowling was also generally consistent and hard working. The tireless Ben Doyle was a worthy winner of the bowling average. Mark Sleeman had an excellent season and Ben Hanley also performed well on most occasions. Matt Kremmer, Matt Hutton, Glenn Parker and Marcus Lancaster also bowled well in the games they played. Although generally lacking brilliance, the fi elding was solid and consistent most of the time.

Special thanks to :- • Coach Anthony Amalfi , his assistant “Polly” Sleeman and their assistants for their excellent seasons

• The captains of the other elevens, Chairman of Selectors Adrian Morrissey, scorer Alex Roberts and the Committee for your efforts during the season

• Bev Sleeman and her helpers for those wonderful afternoon teas.

• The parents, wives and supporters for their encouragement during the season

Finally thank you to all the players who played in the third eleven during the season for your support, assistance and friendship. I look forward to seeing many of you building next year on the foundations of 2004/2005 and progressing into the seconds next season (and also to seeing more of those who came up from the fourths for a few games).

The season started off brilliantly with the experienced players & the young guys working together well & winning our fi rst fi ve games was a great start.

Getting washed out in the sixth game when in an undeniable winning position against the eventual premiers Ringwood was a downer. Unfortunately work positions & family commitments changed & we lost three experienced players -our two opening batsmen & number three, this left us light on for batsmen & injuries to our other three sides also took a couple more away. We were then asking guys who bat 5,6 & 7 to bat at the top & they were not experienced enough as yet. We bowled & fi elded well the whole season. The bowling was won by our experienced bowler in Anthony Hall who bowled consistent line & length all season & was backed up by a couple of young guys in Rishton Mc Ardle & special mention to Sudesh Fernando & Nick Greenhalf - models of consistency- who just got better as the year went on & will yet further improve.

The batting was held together by no doubt the best batsman in the side Speros Beasley, who duly won the batting trophy & also

the experienced (Tonker) in Sumit Kapoor (Sunny) who when he hit them they stayed hit as his 117 against Ringwood in 80 balls proved. Also good performances by Julian Black & Angus Green who unfortunately for the 4th’s but good for the boys played in higher teams, which was rightly deserved. Many of the younger guys showed patches of brilliance during the season & will improve with coaching. We missed the fi nals by losing the last game by a few runs but we were never disgraced. It was a pleasure to captain a team of good young men.

Thanks to Speros (Vice Captain) for all his support & help, to David Sykes for Scoring all year, to John Carroll for his support & help at home games & fi nally to Joe Carnelli sponsor & supporter of the fourths & also a good friend

Kevin Hannett

Again, the Junior Division showed excellent results this season. Out of nine teams, four teams competed in the ‘fi nals’ and one team, won the fl ag. Personally, I cannot recall a happier nor more hassle-free year (from the players and parents at least). All thanks of course to the Committee, to the Managers and to the Coaches. Yet there is still much to be done to improve our performances as we look to the future.

The concept of the specialist coaches for each team worked well for many teams, however it is likely that next year we will ask Kelly Sports (with a new and very keen regional manager) to help at U10 and U12C levels as the young players really need basic and consistent training to get them to a level from where they can develop further. We will endeavor to provide the Coach/Manager structure again for the higher level teams.

We have come to an agreed position with the Senior Division regarding the importance of ‘transition’ and will look to welcome past junior players into the senior ranks – if they would like to play. The opportunities here are considerable on both sides and it will be the primary pathway for further development and general cricket enjoyment of our junior players.

We have consolidated the ‘Emerging Magpies’ and Matthew Elliott’ squads so that each will form an important part of the Junior Division training focus for the more skilled players.

Finally, we continue to uphold the importance of those players who simply enjoy the game, enjoy being with their friends and yet also wish to learn and improve. We hold these aspirations as fundamental and essential to the future of the club.

Teams

Under 16AThe Under 16 A team encountered a narrow loss in their semi fi nal against North Balwyn. In a competition that consisted of only six teams the boys had a reasonably good season under the leadership of Matthew Cosgrave. We defeated each team once, except the second placed Heatherdale, so we were able to match it with each side in the competition.

The highlight was an outstanding win against the previously undefeated North Balwyn in a tight and fi ercely contested encounter. Our bowling was fairly consistent all season although we bowled too many no balls and wides which in some cases probably cost us games. In general we were able to dismiss sides for reasonable scores. Tim Melville and Karl Wissell formed quite a potent opening attack in the latter part of the season. They were well supported by some enthusiastic fi elding and steady bowling from other members of the team.

Will Shute had the diffi cult task of wicket keeping throughout the season particularly when the bowlers strayed in line and length. In too many games we were not able to post a high enough score to put pressure on the opposition or chase relatively gettable scores.

Each boy demonstrated the ability to bat well but some loose shots and careless running between wickets often led to their downfall. Karl Wissell was by far the most productive batsman scoring 3 half centuries including a match winning 58 out of 88 in the game against North Balwyn. Matthew Cosgrave batted well in the early part of the season but was unable to convert starts into bigger scores. A disappointing statistic was the fact that Karl was the only player to score a half century.

Throughout the season the boys maintained their enthusiasm and enjoyment for the game. They worked hard in the nets to improve their skills and were a pleasure to manage.

My thanks goes to the parents who supported the boys during the season and were willing helpers when needed.

John Douglas(Chairman’s note: John has since moved on to be Club President at Carlton. We thank him for his years of outstanding service to the Junior Division and wish him all the best in his new portfolio. He will be missed.)

Under 16BCamberwell Magpies U16B Gold team endured a disappointing season in terms of results. For the majority of players, however, it appeared to be a very successful season from the point of view of enjoying their sport and each other’s company.

Individually many successes were achieved.Tom Lancashire showed great leadership as captain and had a good season with bat and ball, making a team top-score of 40 not out and generally bowling very economically.

Kate Down showed that when she gets fi red up she is a very effective bowler as well as being a highly competent juggler in the fi eld.

Monique Draycott played a wonderful innings against Eastern Willows to help Camberwell to bat for 56 overs, denying the opposition the opportunity to make us bat again.

James Flood batted at the very top of the order, generally against A grade standard bowlers and made valuable contributions to the score and to on-fi eld entertainment with his dry wit.

Angus Gillespie had a number of great innings. Unfortunately he failed to follow the “team tactic” with his bowling and was seen repeatedly pitching the ball up.

Nicholas Johns (aka Curtley Ambrose) delivered the ball from a great height and surprised batsmen with his pace and bounce. The odd defensive shot would have helped his batting early in the season but he really improved after Christmas.

Will McMahon will probably say he had a really ordinary season but he was one of very few batters to average double fi gures and his presence in the team was of far greater benefi t than his statistics.

Junior Division Report

Matt McLellan demonstrated the benefi t of having a very good ‘keeper, not just in taking eight catches and two stumpings, but in really holding the fi elding together.

The addition of Campbell Phillips to the team was of great benefi t. He made the second highest run aggregate, bowled capably, was stand-in ‘keeper and team Romeo.

Matt Robinson was really hitting the spot with his bowling late in the season, getting huge turn. His willingness to engage opponents in social banter provided entertainment for the umpires.

Lakshan Weerasinghe showed plenty of dash with the bat early in the season coming very close to hitting some big sixes. Unfortunately the opposition countered this with the unsporting tactic of placing fi elders who could catch on the mid-wicket boundary.

Thanks to Simon Draycott who performed a fantastic job as coach, umpire and, at the start of most games, stand-in team manager.

Thanks also to the parents who supported the team each week and who provided essential services like scoring and organisation of social activities.

Alex Down

Under 14B GreenThe U14’s had a terrifi c season just missing out on the fi nal. Each player contributed with bat and ball throughout the season and showed enormous improvement. The most pleasing aspect of the team was their appreciation of how to build a big total when batting, bowling good line and length and pressuring opposition teams when we fi elded. Over the season we scored in excess of 200 on fi ve occasions including 255 against the runners up, and regularly bowled teams out. With half the team still eligible to play U14, we look forward to next season with great expectation.

James Bett had a very successful season scoring 395 runs and taking 14 wickets. He was subsequently awarded the ECA Medal for the most Outstanding Player. Congratulation also to James, Matt Parker and Matt De Fina for being selected for various RM Hatch (U14) teams.

Bruce Richards

Under 14B GoldThe U14 team had a somewhat patchy season with some great wins and some disappointing losses, although they did suffi ciently well to produce a semi-fi nal berth. Unfortunately, they were undermanned in this game and could not produce the performance necessary to go on to the fi nal.

During the season, most players had their ‘day’ with several high scores and good bowling performances from various team members throughout the season. The added help from several players from the U12A team was much appreciated and helped to round off the team’s performances in most matches.

Special thanks to Tony Van Rensburg (and also John Flett), who covered both the training and the match days without any additional help. The loss of Tony’s son to the team through injury half way through the season and his persistence in both training and match-day appearances exemplifi es the commitment he showed.

(Chairman’s Report)

Under 14CThe Under 14C team had a diffi cult season in many ways: many of the teams they played seemed of a substantially higher caliber which resulted often in some disappointing losses. To their credit, the boys persevered throughout the season and the moments of satisfaction were worth the wait for them and for their stalwart supporters at every match. Thanks again to the various players from the U12A team who fi lled the breech at various times, and particular thanks to the diligent and committed coaching of Jack McNamara without whom the season for the boys would have been much the poorer.

(Chairman’s Report)

Under 12AThe U12A team has proven to be a very competitive side with a strong leadership group from the previous season blended with a group of players that have come through from the U12B and C teams from last year. The philosophy was to give all players an opportunity although being an A level team we have lead with our strengths on most occasions. The outcome during the normal season was seven wins, two losses and a washout resulting in a third place fi nish on percentage. The competition was so close that a win in the fi nal around against Canterbury would have resulted in a top of the ladder fi nish. On this occasion we were short of players due to school commitments.

As Team Manager it has been immensely rewarding watching the individual progress across this team. Each player has made major contributions to the team performance at times, even the substitutes from the different squads have performed well. The leadership group, namely Alastar McMahon, Andy Richards and Seb Evans were recognized for their efforts when named in leadership roles for representative teams of the ECA. They have provided a receptive and fun environment for the others to settle in at the A level and the team has prospered as a result. Watching the “mateship” develop has been a highlight.

Thanks to all, especially the boys for their enthusiasm, all the parents for their great support, and the numerous ‘coaches’ for their cameo roles.

Philip Everist

(Chairman’s note: Unfortunately, the U12A team was defeated by a strong and disciplined Canterbury team in the fi nal.)

Under 12BThe last game of the season was a refl ection of the teams approach for the year – having scored a convincing fi rst innings win (8/191 versus 10/97) the team decided to go for the outright to maximize their points if possible, knowing that they were second on the ladder at that time.

Junior Division Report cont...

31

This attitude of making every wicket and/or run count refl ected the spirit of the team throughout the year. The determination of the boys ultimately paid off, with a Premiership Shield being the fi nal result – the points being even for the top four teams with CMCC winning on percentage, only losing two games.

This was an outstanding achievement for a team comprising six players that were still eligible to play U10!!!, and at least three more senior players not being available all season due to either school sport commitments or fi lling in for the U12A’s.

All the team contributed in various ways and maintained excellent team spirit and support for each other. All this was achieved with an approach of rotating the batting and bowling order each week without bias, with all boys happily accepting the roles allocated each week. It would appear that the team is ready for an U12A challenge next season!

Thanks for the support of parents, particularly Roger Dray who was always happy to umpire and to attend more than his share of training sessions. Also, David Adams’ diligent scoring up until Christmas was always appreciated.

Wayne Tarrant & Bill Tyson

Under 12C (Black and White)This group of boys started the season on the back foot. Because many of last year’s victorious U10 side wished to play this year in the U12 (though they were still eligible for U10), we were unable to form an U10 team. Hence, those who were U10 had to learn at a higher level than they otherwise would have. (This of course is not all that unusual – the U10 concept has only been around for 3 years or so).

The U12 players therefore were in a diffi cult situation, probably compounded by the philosophy of the club to play ‘friends with friends’ so that each team had a fairly junior profi le and runs and wickets were, accordingly, hard to come by.

There is no doubt the rewards will start to show next season for both groups of teams.

Particular thanks should go to David Monkhouse and Costa Nomikoudis who showed signifi cant leadership by choosing to stay with the junior teams rather than opt for a 12B position.

Thanks also to the coaches from both teams (Tom Holyman, John Harris, Gareth Mellor, Prabhu Basoor and Phil Smith) for their forbearance, their persistence and their encouragement to the teams throughout the season.

Milo Have-A-Go Cricket at Camberwell Magpies

In February we concluded our eight week Milo cricket program for 5 to 10 year olds with the now customary sausage sizzle. Judging by the number of parents and children who expressed their thanks, I think it was another successful season. Or maybe it was the sausages that impressed them. There were 25 boys and 2 girls in our group, all enthusiastic and prepared to have a go (hence the name of the program). Happily, the same could be said of their parents, who provided valuable on fi eld assistance, coaching and encouragement.

A group of 10 children played on the MCG in the lunch break of the Bushrangers vs Tigers state match, and there were a couple of sixes hit over the fence! All the Milo cricketers on the ground that day formed a guard of honour for the returning players and received low 5’s from Warnie, Mattie Elliott and the rest.

Finally, several of this year’s Milo group will be eligible to play U10cricket next season and we are pleased to be able to provide a path from sub-junior to junior cricket and beyond.

Financial Report

A disappointing result with a defi cit of around $5,000, but the balance sheet remains strong with Members’ Funds of $142,255.

Expenses overall were up although this was pretty much in line with our budget. Last year our Cricket Expenses were lower than budgeted due to the unplanned change of coaching staff mid-season. With a new expanded coaching panel in place and signifi cant repairs to our sight screens required we knew that additional revenue must be found.

The plan was to increase our revenue through social income, but unfortunately the company through whom we had conducted our major fund raising raffl e over the last couple of seasons was unable to fi t us in to their schedule this year. This gap was partially offset by the generous bequest of $5,000 from the estate of the Hon. Vernon Wilcox and a terrifi c effort from Peter Hannan and his committee in organising a very successful Annual Ball and Auction night.

The revised draw and some inclement weather resulted in less cricket being played but this proved to have a neutral impact on the fi nancial result with lower match levy revenue being offset by decreased ground rental expenses.

The junior section of the club once again ran at a modest surplus.

As always, I wish to record the club’s appreciation to the following:

• Cricket Victoria. - for its dividend and bonus• City of Boroondara Council• Club Sponsors / Past Players• All the players of the Club

INDEPENDENT AUDIT REPORT TO THE MEMBERS OFCAMBERWELL MAGPIES CRICKET CLUB INC

Scope

I have audited the attached special purpose fi nancial report, the Balance Sheet and the Profi t and Loss Statement of Camberwell Magpies Cricket Club Inc for the year ended 30 June 2005. The Camberwell Magpies Cricket Club Inc Committee of Management is responsible for the fi nancial report and have determined that the accounting policies used are consistent with the fi nancial reporting requirements of the Camberwell Magpies Cricket Club Inc’s constitution and are appropriate to meet the needs of the members. I have conducted an independent audit of the fi nancial report in order to express an opinion on it to the members of Camberwell Magpies Cricket Club Inc. No opinion is expressed as to whether the accounting policies used are appropriate to the needs of the members.

The fi nancial report has been prepared for distribution to members for the purpose of fulfi lling the Committee of Management’s fi nancial reporting requirements under the Camberwell Magpies Cricket Club Inc’s constitution. I disclaim any assumption of responsibility for any reliance on this report or on the fi nancial report to which it relates to any person other than the members, or for any purpose other than that for which it was prepared.

My audit has been conducted in accordance with Australian Auditing Standards. My procedures included examination, on a test basis, of evidence supporting the amounts and other disclosures in the fi nancial report. These procedures have been undertaken to form an opinion whether, in all material respects, the fi nancial report is presented fairly in accordance with the cash basis of accounting whereby revenue is recorded when it is received, expenses are recorded when they are paid, and no assets or liabilities, other than cash and bank balances and fi xed assets already on hand are recorded. Accounting Standards and other professional reporting requirements are not applicable to the accounting policies adopted by Camberwell Magpies Cricket Club Inc.

The audit opinion expressed in this report has been formed on the above basis.

As is common for organisations of this type, it is not practicable for Camberwell Magpies Cricket Club Inc to maintain an effective system of internal control over donations, subscriptions and other fund raising activities until their initial entry in the accounting records. Accordingly, my audit in relation to fund raising was limited to amounts recorded.

Audit Opinion

In my opinion, except for the effects of such adjustments, if any, as might have been determined to be necessary had the limitation discussed in the qualifi cation paragraph not existed, the fi nancial report presents fairly in accordance with the accounting policies, as described above, the payments and receipts of Camberwell Magpies Cricket Club Inc for the year ended 30 June 2005 and its cash and bank balances as at that date.
