He is running toward me now withArms outstretched and wide open grin,The fog has finally lifted in my little boy of ten.

Atop the beautiful hill on that clear and sunny day,He jumps into my arms and hugs me tightAs I begin to pray,

“Thank you, Lord, for the miracle of this boy’s life,And for healing his distressed little mindThat has caused his mom, sister, and dad such indescribable strife.”

Suddenly I awaken, and it’s raining all around,My little boy with the clear-thinking mindIs nowhere to be found.

We do not know for how long, but the distress is with us still. Our hope and prayer is that we will soon meetThat wonderful little boy Atop the beautiful hill.

What a Blessing 2004 Has Been!I am pleased to report that 2004 was a very successful year in terms of services provided to children, youth, and families by the Louisiana United Methodist Children and Family Services. Our direct care services remained populated at operational capacity throughout the year. A total of 1,080 individual children were referred for residential services. We were able to care for 337 or 29% of the requests. In 2003, we had 1,038 referrals, and we were able to care for 385 or 37%.

During this past year a total of 1,518 individuals were served through the Family Counseling Center on the campus of the Children’s Home. This is an increase of 739 individuals served or 95% over the previous year.

The Family Plus Program continues to grow. During the year a total of 873 individuals were provided some level of direct care ranging from crisis intervention and counseling to parental education training. A total of 503 families received services. A total aggregate number of 1,637 persons were involved with the program throughout the year.

A total of 4,061 participants utilized the programs offered at the Outdoor Wilderness Learning (OWL) Center. These activities included the Challenge Course (Ropes), camping, fishing, hiking, biking, sports field, hothouse plants, equine therapy, and the Karen A. Vining Memorial Arbor Walk.

We received a total operating income of $7,477,902 and had expenditures of $7,117,467, leaving us with a positive balance of $360,435. The positive balance will help offset the shortfall of $117,691 we experienced during 2003. Detailed reports will be published once our Annual Audit is completed.

The increased support from our donors was truly a blessing, and that support is what kept us solvent this year. Our Board of Directors, our staff, and I-on behalf of the Children given new hope in life by experiencing God’s Love through our ministry-thank you for being on our team during 2004. May God bless all that we do in 2005!

Yours in Christ,

Terrel J. DeVillePresident/CEO

May 8 is that Special Day set aside each year to honor those ladies who have meant so much to each of us, whether our biological mothers or those who have filled that role-grandmothers, sisters, nieces, aunts, neighbors, teachers. It is also a special day

The ladies of the Public Relations, Development, and Marketing Department say “Thank You” for remembering those “special ladies” in your lives. L-R: Jane Ellen Boothe, Marcia Franz, Lynn Williams, and Katherine Ellis

This year we here in the Development Department of the Home want you to know who receives your gifts into our ministry. Mrs. Jane Ellen Boothe, our administrative aide, essentially keeps a pulse on all happenings of our department. Mrs. Lynn Williams welcomes visitors and guests, those who appear in person and those who telephone. She offers guidance and suggestions for our Local Church Representatives (LCR’s). Ms. Katherine Ellis is our information services (computer guru) consultant who also thanks our donors for their gifts that are not designated as honorariums or memorials. Mrs. Marcia Franz thanks those of you who pay tribute to your loved ones through honorariums or memorials.

We consider it quite a privilege to send our thanks for each gift. This year we humbly ask that all Mother’s Day envelopes be sent directly to us here in Ruston. We make this request whether the Mother’s Day Offering is sent through the Conference Office or is sent to us directly. Thank you!

here at Louisiana Methodist Children’s Home because the United Methodist churches in our state receive an offering for our ministry-the ONLY offering designated for us in the entire year. The following information about the two distribution options is for the local church treasurer: • Send the offering directly to us in Ruston at PO Box 929,

Ruston, LA 71273-0929, labeled clearly, Mother’s Day.• Send the money through the Conference Office in Baton

Rouge. [Any money sent by this method should: (1) use the Advance Special Report form and (2) clearly mark on the check Methodist Children’s Home Offering, RUSTON. Gifts sent throughout the year through the Conference Office for the Ruston Home also need to be earmarked clearly, Methodist Children’s Home, RUSTON. (The New Orleans Home has its special offering day in December.)]

Questions may be addressed to the Public Relations, Development, and Marketing Department, Toll Free 866-255-5830 or 318-255-5020.

The Luck of the Irish pervaded Squire Creek Country Club on March 17, 2005 when Louisiana Methodist Children’s Home and La Tech Athletics hosted a Garden Party with Kix Brooks (Half of the singing duo, Brooks and Dunn). Mr. Brooks engaged the guests through relating his involvement with the two organizations; conducting a live auction of concert tickets, an

autographed guitar, and a signed Brooks and Dunn jacket; and making himself available for pictures and autographs. Guests dined at buffet stations featuring scrumptious arrays of foods. Both organizations

conducted silent auctions of remarkably versatile items. One of the displays commanding attention was an assortment of suncatchers made by Mrs. Sandi Adams’ Emergency Shelter girls at the Children’s Home.

The Irish Luck carried over into the following day with a mutually successful golf tournament. Louisiana Methodist Children’s Home thanks Mr. Brooks for his willingness to give his time to these fundraising efforts-the focus always being CHILDREN.

Bunkhouse Project The Louisiana Tech fifth-year School of Architecture students, under the tutelage of Architecture Program Chair and Associate Professor Karl Puljak, presented their design for a bunkhouse on the property of the Outdoor Wilderness Learning (OWL) Center of

MCH to the Board of Directors in its Spring Meeting in early March. These fourteen students honed the design and concept of the bunkhouse from the overview offered by MCH administration. Their three premises were: to provide spaces for learning opportunities, to reflect the natural environment through the use of simple materials, and to meet basic physical needs of the occupants.

Keeping the nearly one hundred residents of the Children’s Home in mind at all times, the decision was to feature a simple rectangular building. It needed the capability to be able to open for cross-ventilation, so large overhangs and porches were employed with the enhancement of ceiling fans. However, the designers had to work with the criteria that no windows could be used as an entry point and that entry ways must be controllable. The facility also would need to accommodate inclement weather where possible.

The students ultimately decided on a 3000 square foot facility, 2500 of this conditioned. There are two 70’x70’ square bunk rooms adjoining a 30’x30’ common room. Each bunk room contains ten bunks, five on each side with the entry from the common room for controlled access. The common room can accommodate forty, and has storage closets for table, chairs, etc. near the entrances to the bunk rooms. A small stage is located in the common room.

Aesthetically, the bunkhouse will complement the nearby cabins and multipurpose building. The bunk room exteriors will have wood siding whereas the common room exterior will be corregated metal, thus differentiating their function. The foyer (entrance to the common room) will contain glass panels (plexiglass) that will be illuminated at night. All materials used will be highly durable.

This project is a cooperative effort of an involved community. Completion and occupancy are scheduled for May.

Monroe Breakfast Awareness-Upstages the Soothsayer!Contrary to Julius Caesar’s warning to beware the Ides of March, March 15, 2005 proved to be a tremendous blessing to Louisiana Methodist Children’s Home. More than 475 early risers attended an informational breakfast at the West Monroe Convention Center.

The emcee for the event, Rev. Warren Blakeman, masterfully moved the program with finesse so that the attendees were able to meet their business obligations of the day-on time. The Youth Choir of West Monroe’s First United Methodist Church, under the apt direction of Greg Oden, wowed the audience with their musical versatility of selections and their early morning energy. Jimmie “Chic” Childress, an alumnus of the Children’s Home from the 50’s, related some of the life lessons

of his years in the Home that enabled his success as a Hall of Fame football coach. Gary Rambin, Director of Residential Services, and Antonio Sims, CAB Supervisor, recounted stories of children in more recent years who had resisted placement in the Children’s Home, but who have returned to say “thank you” for the “tough love” they received. Mrs. Dianne Cage challenged the audience to remember the fond memories from their own childhoods as an impetus to insure that today’s children at the Home have similar opportunities.

The administration, staff, and children of the Home thank each sponsor, table captain, program participant, and attendee for their effort in making this Breakfast Awareness a tremendous success!

Dr. Robert W. Flournoy,Director of Major Gifts and Planned Giving

The Children’s Home receives over 1000 applications a year for treatment. Yes, 1000 or more! Currently we can only accommodate about 250-300 of those youth on our main campus. Where do the other 750 youth go for help? Probably nowhere and stay in the abuse and neglect situation that prompted the application. Think of those children who are being abused, neglected, or creating problems or crime. They need help or state agencies and parents would not be applying for assistance.

How then do we treat and help heal more children? Our main campus is always maxed out with 96 children. In the near future, we will be able to take 8 more youth in a state-approved, refurbished residence on campus. But that doesn’t make a big enough dent in the applications.

There is a better way...The Outdoor Wilderness Learning (OWL) Center

is an 800-acre campus located 12 miles northwest of Ruston. We have several programs currently in use at the OWL, but there is so much more to be done with the space and natural resources of this property. Projects being constructed this spring include a bunkhouse (housing 40 youth at a cost of $90,000) and a treated wood maze ($20,000 cost gratefully given by a generous donor.) Both projects will be ready for use this summer.

But, the most positive dream of the use of this property is a Multipurpose Center for Early Intervention. This center would provide space for seminars, a fellowship hall, and a dining room area. The Multipurpose Center will cost approximately $900,000. Family cabins are in the plans, and we have been given some funds, but need approximately $100,000 for 4 units. Families can arrange times to stay at the OWL while their children are housed in the cabins or bunkhouse and receive counseling together as a family unit. Early intervention to correct problems and behavior is a key to helping kids stay within their family unit and not needing our residential services.

Our plans for the OWL will alleviate a lot of waiting time for needy kids to receive the help they need in a timely fashion. The OWL offers this help in an outdoor, rural environment that promotes healing. In addition, costs for early intervention at the OWL will be greatly less than residential care, which costs an average of $200+ per day.

You can help by praying for us and making a donation for our Multipurpose Early Intervention Center. Please consider your best gift this year. We need your help to make this dream a reality.

THE BUZZ FROM DR. BOB

Our Latest LegacyMrs. Gerry Myers of Baton Rouge

recently prepared a Living Trust through the United Methodist Foundation in which she donated a tract of timberland in Mississippi to Louisiana Methodist Children’s Home upon her death. This bequest is given in memory of her only son, Dawson Monroe Corley, a writer by profession, who died of a brain tumor at age 44. Mrs. Myers has maintained a love for the work of the Children’s Home since she received her higher education at Louisiana Polytechnic Institute (as it was known then) in l940. While living here in Ruston, she attended Sunday school with a number of children who called Louisiana Methodist Orphanage their “home” and whose friendships helped her develop a life-long respect for the ministry. Mrs. Myers, we pledge to honor your commitment to Louisiana’s children of the future and your trust in our agency.

Please consider including your Children's Home in your will.

One of our dedicated employees of 21 years is Ms. Emma Ensley. However, most of the campus and the majority of the children with whom she works call her “Mama Ensley.” This is a completely voluntary title, since she introduces herself only as Ms. Ensley in the initial greeting of each child as he/she enters our care. To be called essentially MOTHER by children who are troubled by their circumstances speaks loudly that Ms. Ensley emulates all that a MOTHER should be to these children. She loves unconditionally, sharing her words of wisdom and her talents. Ms. Ensley has taught many of our children (both boys and girls) to crochet. Currently, she works with our Emergency Shelter girls. For Easter, she helped the girls to make teddy bears. These girls also made small quilts and are learning to embroider and counted cross stitch. What a blessing Mama Ensley is to this ministry.
