Annual Report 2014 - 15 (2)

Deepshikha is now 27 years old!! And there is a lot to report too….

The year gone by was an extremely busy one, the major achievement being the the 22nd National Parents’ Meet! The Parents’ Association of Deepshikha, Mitra, shared responsibilities and was fully involved from the very beginning! We had a record 600 delegates attending the Meet and it was so good to have parents from all over the country to listen to the experts! With such enthusiasm, we hope to see many more events coming up in future!

This year Deepshikha introduced the Comm Deall program, conceptualized by Dr. Pratibha Karanth in Bangalore. It is an early intervention program for children with Autism, aiming at inclusion. The Com Deall Unit was formally inaugurated by the Chief Commissioner of Disabilities, Shri Prasanna Pincha, Mrs Poonam Natarajan and Dr. D.K. Menon! What an honour for us! We are all looking forward to the positive results which we hope this Unit will bring.

Under the dynamic leadership of the Social Welfare Secretary, Smt. Mridula Sinha, Deepshikha also organized “Way Forward…….A State Level Workshop on Disability”, paving the way for a better Jharkhand. The State Disability Policy which had been ready for the last 3-4 years, complete with all the legal formalities, was also launched in this programme.

This year we had a number of volunteers. Liz, who was a VSO volunteer last year, came all the way from UK to work with us for almost 10 weeks! Her contribution will be remembered and missed by all of us. We also had Suchita, a NIIFT graduate. She helped to design the products made in the vocational unit. Small groups of students from Xavier College also came to volunteer for short periods.

The pilot project of Special Olympic Bharat, that is, “Rehabilitation of PWDs through Sports” completed two years. Children, who have never been away from their homes without their families, are learning to live in camps, are participating in numerous game, and are getting selected to represent their State! The credit for the success of this program goes, undoubtedly, to the JEPC for sending children with special needs from neighboring blocks. Children, also, look forward to these camps, getting new T Shirts, Shoes and the thrill and pleasure of living with their peers. No wonder the participation which used to be barely 100 is now over 400 students!

As always, the donors from the community stood by us. We had the Chacha Nehru Vidyapith Trustees visit us. Impressed by the work, they supported us wholeheartedly. They even filled up the shortfall that we had, to buy a bus! The Priyadarshini Charity Trust is building a new Auditorium for Deepshikha!

Thank You!

Sudha Lhila

His speech is very clear. He went back home with self confidence and high self esteem. He expresses how he wants things to be, and shared his thoughts with teachers and parents.

Internships & VolunteersStudents from St. Xavier’s College, Ranchi, IGNOU (BSW Dept.) and TISS are regularly coming to Deepshikha for internship.

They are given an orientation on disability and about Deepshikha. Even though their placement is of a short duration, they are a big help in making TLMs, giving finishing touches to the products made by the students of vocational unit, organizing Special Olympic events and assisting the teachers in the classrooms.

Volunteers at Deepshikha help create an energy into the atmosphere!

Elizabeth Hannah (Liz) was one such person. Always on the go, any teacher could ask her help, be it any guidance on autism or simply making a TLM. Deepshikha has indeed been lucky to have such a volunteer. Liz, has to her credit, a couple of books on Autism.

Suchita Modi, a fashion designer by profession, came to Deepshikha for just a few months. However, she made a great impact in the vocational unit with her talent for product designing. With the same product that the students were making earlier, we now have better designs.

Minu Jejani, an artist, is now a regular at Deepshikha. She has a flair for Art and Craft. Her talent is visible through out the school walls.

Parents as volunteers :We have a few parents also coming as volunteers.

1. 1st July 2014

Meeting of all LLC members (District Collectors, PWD members, LLC Registered Organization)

17 Deepshikha, Ranchi

NGO’s should positively send the quarterly report for the work done for National Trust Disabilities.

Suggestion for change in PWD members in LLC should be reported in the prescribed format and should be sent to National Trust and SNAC.

All LLC-NGO members are to designate a person specifically for looking after the LLC activities for better monitoring and coordination and should inform National Trust & SNAC.

For initiating LLC activities in districts other than their own, they would find a suitable NGO (Not yet registered with NT) willing to take up the responsibilities on their behalf till they get registered with National Trust.

SNAC will coordinate with the Secretary, Social Welfare at the State Level to have a meeting with DSWOs of various districts to regularize LLC meetings in their district.

SNAC will also coordinate with National Trust for various issues reported by NGOs.
