Chair’s message
Over this past year, I have been proud to witness the National Health Co-op’s (NHC’s) rapid evolution into one of the most important primary health care delivery organisations in the country. The NHC is becoming, without question, a fantastic asset that will provide ongoing benefit for the entire community for generations to come.
In the past 12 months, with the support of Service One Alliance Bank, the NHC has opened three new clinics and is in the process of completing another clinic in Yass, NSW, its first outside the ACT. These four clinics represent a doubling in the number of sites and have contributed to the record number of treatments that are being delivered to members.
The organisation’s membership has continued to grow strongly with now over 33,000 patients drawn from all corners of the Canberra region. This growth trend will only continue as the organisation’s footprint expands and new members join.
Since last year’s AGM, the NHC’s clinical team has expanded significantly including the addition of five new general practitioners, three new practice nurses, four new psychologists and an exercise physiologist. Supporting the expansion of clinical services and sites, the NHC’s administrative team has also continued to develop with the addition of several key positions that lay the foundation for the organisation’s future success.
The NHC is currently in the process of building a standardised design model and financial mechanism that will not only enable its nationwide expansion, but also provide communities with the opportunity to invest in the physical assets the NHC requires for its expansion. The importance of the model and financial mechanism is critical to the NHC’s goal of providing affordable healthcare for all Australians.
The NHC has also begun to explore the power of data analytics for use in managing, and ultimately preventing, disease through targeted education and intervention
programs. As the NHC continues to grow and develop, it will increase its investment in these critical capabilities.
Advanced data and statistical analytics is one of the ways that the NHC is able to provide a significant benefit to its members within a cost constrained environment. The NHC will constantly analyse the results of this work to drive our continuous improvement.
In time, as its data analytics capability develops, the NHC intends to make high-level aggregated data available to the medical community for use as a benchmark population. This will enable other providers, Governments and clinical researchers to use the NHC’s aggregated data for their own purposes including comparisons with other privately held datasets. Through this, the NHC can contribute to the improved health of all Australians regardless of whether they are an NHC member or not.
I am very confident that the NHC has the ability to revolutionise the future of healthcare in Australia. The immense foundational work that has been accomplished over the past year is clearly positioning the organisation to deliver its ambitious expansion plans and provide affordable healthcare for all Australians.

Overview
The National Health Co-op (NHC) is a not-for-profit, member owned co-operative that provides affordable medical and healthcare services to the communities where it operates. Our overarching goal is to provide access to affordable healthcare for all Australians, significantly reducing instances of preventable diseases and lessening the personal and societal impact of chronic conditions.
Our beginningThe NHC was formed in response to a lack of General Practitioners in the northwest region of Canberra, West Belconnen, a suburban area of 20,000 people. This issue came about due to medical practices progressively closing in the area over the preceding years and an increasing shortage of General Practitioners in the region.
In the hope of addressing this issue, in September 2004 a number of community organisations and local residents convened a public meeting. Out of this meeting, a community representative committee was formed, which included a small executive committee. The executive committee was tasked with trying to find solutions to the situation.
In December 2006, the committee re-formed as a registered co-operative, the ‘West Belconnen Health Co-operative Ltd’. Eventually capital funding was found to enable the opening of its first GP clinic in the suburb of Charnwood in January 2010.
In September 2014, the name was changed to the ‘National Health Co-operative Ltd’ (NHC) in recognition that the Co-op had opened several clinics in the north and south of Canberra and was planning to further expand geographically in Canberra and beyond.
Our futureThe NHC currently employs over 80 medical and administrative staff across eight Canberra based clinics and services approximately 10 per cent of the ACT’s population, as well as a significant number of residents in the broader Canberra region.
The NHC is currently in the early stages of a national expansion which will see the establishment of clinics throughout Australia with a priority on areas that are under serviced, particularly in regional locations. The NHC expects that this will require in excess of 200 sites nationally.
