We are Constantly Looking at Ways to Improve the Services We Provide

The youth we serve at Bethany have all faced some level of trauma. Our dedicated staff focuses on teaching our youth the skills that will enhance their success in life while understanding and dealing with the trauma they’ve faced. Through your generous support and the hard work of our staff and volunteers, together we are changing the lives of children, one youth at a time.

Here are a few highlights from this past year:

• We are in the process of getting a nationally recognized accreditation (Joint Commission Certification) which will enhance the quality of our services in many ways. For example: improved safety procedures for youth and staff, enriched service planning and related documentation, enhanced internal policies, procedures and protocols, improved stakeholder communications, better positioning to manage organizational growth, and to fulfill regulatory requirements.

• Daniel Memorial Life Skills Assessment has been obtained and staff members have been trained in the process. This program provides the team with identified life skills deficits and a plan to work on those deficits with the youth.

• Our Emergency Shelter (Henning) has undergone numerous upgrades. The building has been modernized with a swipe card entry system which eliminates the use of keys; Our large open space has been divided into smaller rooms to allow staff to have the youth in smaller groups which resulted in better care and fewer incidents. Lastly, a new positive behavior intervention system and new clinical groups tailored to the shelter’s ever changing population were implemented.

• Our Health Clinic had a major renovation this past year. As one of our youth stated “Wow, this really looks like a doctor’s office!”. In addition to providing care for youth who are sick and injured, the health clinic provides a wide range of services including nutritional and weight loss coaching, sexual health, disease prevention and overall wellness.

• Staff training underwent upgrades as well. A new staff post-training evaluation and feedback program was initiated. Additional trauma informed training was added as well as boundaries and ethics training. Role play scenarios were added to give staff a more realistic cottage life experience.

• Our tutors in our Education Center held 826 individual tutoring sessions this past year. Through the work of our tutors, houseparents and staff as well as the teachers and staff at Conrad Weiser School District, we’ve averaged an amazing 22 youth who have made the honor roll per marking period.

• Recreation and Art Departments continue to offer our youth various groups based on a youth’s interest. In addition to pottery, mixed media, creative arts and acrylic pouring, we now offer Zentangle, which is an easy-to-learn, relaxing and fun way to create beautiful images by drawing structured patterns.

• Bethany’s Pastor Kim Kendrick continues to keep our youth engaged by having youth involved in the planning and leading of the services under her guidance. She also coordinated summer camps and special trips to places such as Sight and Sound Theater.

• This past year our Food Service Department began working with the Berks County Food Bank. Not only has this saved Bethany money, but it also gives us the opportunity to give our youth nutritious fresh fruits, vegetables and meat.

A Letter From our CEO, Kevin Snyder

Sincerely,

Kevin Snyder, CEO

We are thankful to all of the volunteers and community supporters who help to provide a brighter future to our kids. We could not continue without your generous support of time, talent and generous giving. Our Board of Directors, staff and especially our youth want to say THANK YOU. Our success is because of YOU!

Bethany’s Dairy Farm housed 70 cows and 78 heifers (all Holsteins) for the 17-18 Fiscal Year. The cows are milked twice

a day and each produces about 95 pounds of milk per day.

The farm produced approximately 2,000,000 pounds of milk for Clover Farms this past year. We have approximately 130

acres of growing fields to raise corn, hay, and soybeans as feed for the cows. Our oldest cow is 11 years old! The farm has

produced milk and raised crops since 1873.

Bethany’s Unique Programs

Bethany’s Therapeutic Services Team provides state of the art individual and group interventions for youth. Because not all youth respond to one specific therapeutic process, we present a multi-disciplinary approach.

Youth in our care are offered many opportunities to address physical, social, cognitive and psychological placement issues.

Bethany offers the following services: • Social Services & Case Management with licensed clinicians• Spiritual services with our campus chaplain• Art and recreation with dedicated, experienced staff

Youth Services at Bethany

Youth in Bethany’s Short Term Intensive Treatment and Residential programs reside in six cottages on campus. They combine to offer 54 beds to male and female youth. The Short Term Intensive Treatment program is a 90-day program. The Residential Treatment program is intended for youth who require support and services to obtain skills in order to move to a less structured setting or return home.

Independent Living offers 18 beds in two cottages and is geared towards youth age 16-20 who have maintained satisfactory educational progress (or may be working on their GED or college/higher education program), and have demonstrated the ability to function appropriately with a minimal level of supervision.

For Bethany youth who are between 18 and 21 years of age, we offer a Supervised Independent Living program in which they reside in an apartment on campus while receiving staff support. Youth in this program must be employed or in school 40 hours a week. This program prepares our youth for living independently in the community. Bethany also provides a 24 hour Emergency Shelter for youth who are in immediate need of a stable environment while a more permanent plan for their care is developed. This program has 32 beds available and is a co-ed facility.

To learn more about our services, please visit our website at bethanyhome.org/services

In 2012 Bethany Home formed Bethany Springs, LLC. Bethany Springs is a for-profit entity of Bethany Home. Bethany Springs sells fresh spring water from Bethany’s mountain property to DS Waters. The revenue generated from sales help support Bethany’s therapeutic services.

On a daily basis, an average of 12 tankers holding 8,000 gallons of water visit Bethany Springs. Our well currently is pumping 40 gallons per minute of fresh spring water. It takes 20 minutes to fill a tanker truck. We’ve pumped 21,600,000 gallons of water in the last year.

Bethany Children’s Home offers several programs to fit the needs of our youth in care.

Over a period of 5 months, Artist, Dustin Horne, had any youth who wanted to participate, paint and design three hundred 4”x 4” canvases which were used as favors at our 2018 Annual Tribute Breakfast in

September. The youth had a great time creating these unique, one of a kind paintings.
