Our Leadership
“The connection between health and
dwelling is one of the most important that
exists.“ Florence Nightingale
What do we mean when we talk about a “Safe and Healthy Home?” For us, it is not just an abstract concept or statistics. (Although the statistics are compelling. For example, in San Mateo County, easily preventable falls account for 80% of accidental injury deaths in individu-als over 85.)
A safe and healthy home means installing laminate floor-ing and a furnace with a HEPA filter so that a 12-year-old girl with life-threatening asthma can leave the hospital and return home without fear. It means that a family no longer huddles around the oven to stay warm, an elderly woman can use her own bathroom instead of the McDonald’s across the street, trip hazards are eliminated, handrails installed, mold removed, locks replaced, and fences repaired. It means peace of mind.
Rebuilding Together Peninsula’s commitment to ensuring a safe and healthy home for everyone remains at the core of our work each April through National Rebuilding Day, but now we are tripling our impact through Safe at Home–our year-round minor home repair program. Through Safe at Home, we’ve increased the number of people we are able to serve as well as tackling simple repairs before they deteriorate into major problems.
Because of donors and volunteers like you, we are able to grow our programs, increase our impact, and focus on creative problem solving. Thank you for helping make our seniors and children safer and healthier in their own homes.

Safe at Home
When a bathroom leak caused water damage
in their garage ceiling, Sheldon and Annabell
B panicked. They had kept their Redwood
City home in excellent condition, but in their
retirement, they could no longer afford even
minor repairs. Annabell felt her stress melt
away after long-time Safe at Home volunteers
arrived to help: “[The volunteers] stopped
the leak from the bathroom. What a relief to
know that the ceiling in the garage will not fall
off and the whole floor will not keep getting
damaged and rotten. The two volunteers who
worked were excellent! Simply incredible!”
There is a large body of evidence (AARP,
San Mateo County Health Briefs, Center for
Healthy Housing, National Center for Injury
Prevention and Control, etc.) which reveals
multiple home repair hazards that pose
significant risks to homeowners’ health and
safety. These easily identifiable hazards add
billions to health care costs and dispropor-
tionately affect low-income families living in
older homes. Housing improvements and
repairs – like the ones provided by our
Safe at Home program, effectively reduce
these risks and prevent unnecessary ill-
ness, disease, and death. There is a broad
range of relatively simple measures that
make high-risk homes healthier and safer.
All homeowners deserve access to safe and
healthy housing. Through Safe at Home, we
are able to make this a reality for Sheldon
and Annabell and countless others.
Thanks to you all, we are much more comfortable in our home, dreams that we thought were impossible
came true and we will always remember your generous spirits.” - 2012 r e c i p i e n t

National Rebuilding Day National Rebuilding Day always occurs the last Saturday of April. It is the cul-mination of a year’s worth of planning that brings together 2000 volunteers to rebuild and restore the homes of low-income homeowners and nonprofit community facilities. Our partners include corporations, service leagues, community agencies, foundations, volunteer groups, hospital districts, municipalities, and individual donors. From landscaping to complete renovations, NRD revitalizes communities and helps individuals live independently in warmth and safety.
Team Build Team Build offers community-minded corporations and service organizations opportunities for volunteer participation that are scheduled to meet the needs of the sponsoring group. Team Build days are at least six hours long and take place June through October. The projects are similar in scope to those undertaken on National Rebuilding Day. Each project fosters goodwill and cooperation while also providing much-needed repairs for low-income homeowners and nonprofit community facilities.
Safe at Home The Safe at Home Minor Home Repair program addresses the minor repair needs of homeowners before the needs become serious deferred maintenance issues. Homeowners who cannot afford even small home repairs receive help with minor plumbing and electrical work, debris removal, home accessibility, fire safety measures, window, door, and gate repair, and more. To be responsive to the health and safety needs of our commu-nity, staff members and small teams of skilled volunteers complete these minor repairs on a year-round basis.
Mission Rebuilding Together Peninsula builds volunteer partnerships to rehabilitate homes and
community facilities for low-income homeowners and neighbors — seniors, people with
disabilities, or families — so they can live independently in warmth and safety.

Vision A safe and healthy home for every person.
Raise The Roof Rebuilding Together Peninsula is the only local agency that provides free roof repair and replacement services for low-income homeowners and nonprofit community facilities. Securing an ad-equate roof is critical to ongoing home and building maintenance. Since 1994, RTP has repaired or replaced 392 roofs. Our roof replacements average $12,000 per roof. However, because of the sup-port we receive from generous donors and roofers who contribute time and materials, we are able to do this work on average for half the actual cost.
Healthy Housing Challenge A new set of tools and training, called Healthy Housing Rehab and Repair, helps to prevent and reduce health and safety hazards in homes. This program will soon be implemented through the Healthy Housing Challenge, a joint venture of National Center for Healthy Housing and Rebuilding Together. RTP is one of the 50 Rebuilding Together affiliates across the nation to participate in the program. In doing so, the Healthy Housing Challenge will demonstrate practical ways to make our homes significantly healthier and safer, and begin to awaken Americans to the link between our homes and our health.
Youth Assisting Seniors (YAS) YAS is a designed to help low-income, elderly and disabled homeowners maintain the exterior of their homes through partnerships with local youth service organizations. The YAS program creates healthier, safer homes for seniors who are aging in place. The program reduces the chance of falls while also increasing accessibility for homeowners, healthcare professionals and emergency services personnel. Equally important, it encourages posi-tive intergenerational experiences and fosters compassion.5

Volunteer Captains work closely with Construction Captains to recruit and organize the volunteer labor
needed for their sites. Without their help in managing over 2000 volunteers annually, we would not be
able to complete the number of projects we do. Volunteer Captains are critical to the work we do and
we thank each and every one for their dedicated efforts and enthusiasm!

Wollenberg Award
South San Francisco ScavengerSouth San Francisco Scavenger Company has been serving the community of South San Francisco since 1914. In its 99-year history, the company has been a huge advocate for the city and residents of South San Francisco. “We try to be a part of the community we serve,” said Doug Button, president of the com-pany. “We work here, live here… you take care of where you work, live and breathe.”
In 1994, Rebuilding Together Peninsula worked on its first project in the city of South San Francisco and reached out to SSF Scav-enger for help. SSF Scavenger was very responsive and donated a dumpster for the project site, and has been very generous in its support to RTP ever since. For the past 18 years, SSF Scavenger has donated approximately 45 dumpsters to the various sites in South San Francisco that RTP has served.
“When people in the community you serve need
something, you just do it,” Doug said. “If you have
healthy homes and homeowners, you have a
healthy community – and we’re proud to be a
part of that.”
RTP is very proud to partner with South San Francisco Scavenger Company to create happy and healthy communities. We are also proud to partner with Allied Waste Services Daly City for the past 12 years. Since 2001, Allied Waste Services has donated 50 dump-sters for various project sites in Daly City. Thank you to South San Francisco Scavenger Company and Allied Waste Services Daly City for their commitment to the communities they serve and to RTP’s mission. We couldn’t do it without you.
Craig PrimCraig Prim is not the average Rebuilding Together Peninsula volun-teer. He is not someone who painted houses or built fences like so many others. For the past 14 years, Craig has supported RTP from behind-the-scenes helping as the organization’s financial adviser, ensuring RTP was always fiscally stable. Craig also served as a National Rebuilding Day runner for six years, running from project to project making sure every site had its supplies and materials. He has also helped at the last five Dreams Happen events, helping to set up and even sitting in as a proxy bidder. And 10 years ago, Craig persuaded Murray & Murray, the law firm he was a partner at, to sponsor a NRD project, which the firm has continued to do so since sponsoring that first home in 2002.
Craig first became familiar with RTP when his wife, Tracey, was involved in the organization as a board member and a Dreams Happen committee chair. He became interested in volunteering with RTP because of the organization’s mission to help others through volunteerism. “[RTP] is an organization doing great things in the lo-cal community mostly relying on volunteers,” Craig said. “You don’t really see that through other organizations.”
Craig feels the opportunity volunteers have to see first-hand how giving their time makes a difference in their community, is what makes National Rebuilding Day such a great day. “It’s the one day you can see you did tremendous good. It’s amazing how much work you can get done in one day…that changes the lives of people,” Craig said enthusiastically. “At the end of the day you feel like ‘I re-ally did something good today’ and you just feel good about it.”
It is volunteers like Craig that make such a huge difference for RTP. Dabbling in a little of this and a little of that within the organiza-tion has truly made him a superstar volunteer, and an irreplaceable member of the RTP family.
The Wollenberg Award is presented annually to those who provided extraordinary resources and leader-
ship to Rebuilding Together Peninsula. The 2011-2012 award is proudly presented to South San Francisco
Scavenger and Craig Prim
