PRESIDENT’S REPORT It is with pleasure that I write this report at the completion of my first year acting as your President in 2018-19. With Bob Wigley stepping down from the role after nine seasons I felt most humble in accepting the position, and would personally like to thank Bob for the time he spent with me after the AGM passing on his experience and knowledge of the workings of the association. Having been involved in the ATCA since 1975, firstly as a player then later at club administration level I have witnessed and played in many great games of cricket and seen some wonderfully talented and not so talented players and administrators come and go, but that is the beauty of our great organization, it caters for all, not just the talented elite few. Having attended all Board of Management meetings since being elected and having observed first-hand how all things operate and are dealt with, I can assure all member clubs of the ATCA that they are in very safe, honest and capable hands run by our Chairman Ron Barber and his eight committee members plus our very hard working EO David Heyzer who puts in way above and beyond his call of duty. Thanks David, your efforts are much appreciated by many. Many thanks also to the ATCUSA for their untiring efforts in what has sometimes been a challenging season (lots of unavailabilities) for them trying to provide quality umpires for our top three grades each week. With an ageing panel to choose from we have many challenges ahead in trying to entice and recruit younger people into the fold. Congratulations to our Association coaches Steve Sykes, Gordon Smith, Ian Barnes, Tony Adams, Wayne Hutchinson, Chris Crosby and Allan Sandery plus all the players who represented the ATCA across the five sections of the SAMCA Cup where we produced outstanding results, winning every available grade- a truly amazing performance indeed! Special commendations to all teams that won premierships, players that won individual high performance trophies, clubs that were rewarded for excellent governance, individuals who received 15, 25 and 40 years’ service awards for their longevity in playing/umpiring and administration roles plus players who were selected in our prestigious ATCA Team of the Year. One must also mention and encourage our fine junior programme, which is the association’s lifeblood as we look into the future. Club coaches, officials, participants and parents are to be thanked most sincerely for their efforts and perseverance, while our embryonic women's grade also has lots of scope for growth with more hard and challenging work. Countless hours have been spent around various meeting tables wrestling with numerous challenges and grasping new opportunities that have been placed in front of us, and I have witnessed many acts of unsung service. We have family, friends and cricket networks and sometimes these are all connected as we volunteer our time. Networks function at their best when teamwork is involved. The investment or commitment in what we do leads to success and satisfaction. The ATCA were an active participant along with many other interested representatives from all sectors of cricket in South Australia with seminars run by SACA called “Cricket Connect” and at the end of the gatherings they have produced a mission statement which reads: - "We will work and communicate honestly with each other to develop and implement an Innovative Action Plan to make South Australian Cricket, through its clubs and stakeholders, the most fun, inclusive and community connected of any sport in Australia". One will watch with interest how this develops in the immediate years. We ALL have an obligation to make South Australian cricket "great" again. I look forward to another great season of cricket ahead in 2019-20, watching games and appreciating the individual skills of many players plus meeting up lots of passionate supporters of Community Cricket once again. All that remains for me to do is to wish you an enjoyable summer of cricket ahead as we embark on another exciting six months, play hard but fair and with respect to opposition and umpires alike. Richard Haby

CHAIRMAN’S REPORT

The Adelaide Turf Cricket Association enjoyed a very successful 2018-19 season. All senior and junior teams competing in the SAMCA competition, created what is thought to be a record by winning all the finals. A great effort! Congratulations and thank you to all players, coaches and officials who participated in this competition. Despite some weather interruptions, both senior and junior finals were keenly contested with some good individual performances. Congratulations to all premiership winners. Special mention must go to the Adelaide Lions Cricket Club, who in their first season in Adelaide Turf, won the B1 Premiership. The Twenty/20 competition was again well supported, with the final played at the Adelaide Oval. Congratulations to PAOC on their win against Pooraka. It is pleasing to see the Women’s competition continuing to expand. Some keenly contested games were played during the season. Congratulations to Reynella on winning the 1st Grade Grand Final by defeating Payneham in a close finish at Devitt Oval. The Association remains in a strong financial position and further sponsorships are being sought in order to stem the ever rising costs to clubs. Thank you to all of our generous sponsors, and again I urge all clubs to keep supporting them. Compliance issues are still a concern for the Board. I ask all team captains, coaches, players and officials in all grades to observe the Spirit of Cricket Policy, which will continue to strongly be reinforced. Although umpire training and appointments are carried out by SACA, our working relationship with the Umpires and Scorers Association remains strong. I thank the President, Doug French and the Executive Committee for their support. The combined ATCA and ATCUSA Presentation Night was held at the Arkaba Hotel on the 26th of March. Thank you to all who organised this successful evening. Apologies were received from our Patron, the Lord Mayor of the City of Adelaide, Sandy Verischoor and Greg Mitchell. Wayne Phillips was Master of Ceremonies for the evening. Thank you Wayne, for a job well done. Congratulations to all award winners and to the players selected in the ATCA Team of the Year. The Junior Presentation Night was held on the 16th of April at the Northgate Community and Sports Club. Thanks to all players, coaches, team managers and parents for the time you have devoted to the junior competition. Congratulations to all premiership and award winners. Congratulations also to Nick Behrendt from the Woodville Rechabite Cricket Club on winning the Bill Alchin award for the under 17 Player of the Year. This was presented by Konrad Date, Secretary of the ATCUSA. Thank you to David Heyzer, Raj Singh and the Northgate Community and Sports Club for contributing to a successful evening. My thanks to the ATCA Executive Officer, David Heyzer for your valued administration of the Association. Your liaison with SACA, SAMCA and other Community Cricket Associations ensures a sound rapport with the cricket community. We also appreciate the capable support of our Administration Assistant, Larraine Markesinis. In closing, I thank the President, Vice President, Board Members and all in the ATCA, for your support and excellent contributions during season 2018-19. We will continue to encourage and promote all forms of Senior, Junior and Women’s cricket, while welcoming new clubs to our Association. Best wishes to all, for season 2019-20.

Ron Barber Chairman

EXECUTIVE OFFICER’S REPORT

I submit for consideration the 2019 Adelaide Turf Cricket Association’s Annual Report, which summarises the season. My role as Executive Officer over the last 9 years has continued to grow with new challenges faced on a consistent basis, proving to be a testing but rewarding experience. In-season challenges, dealing with player behaviour, continues to make the role of the Executive Officer demanding with too much of my resources used in dealing with such matters, resources which could be better utilized dealing with to day to day matters of the Association. A total of 53 Clubs participated, fielding 155 senior men’s teams, 40 junior and 42 sub junior teams. The introduction of the sub junior competition in 2016/17 is proving to be a successful experiment with player numbers increasing each year. The Association has also seen the Twenty/20 competition continue to prosper with 68 teams participating. The Association continues to grow women’s cricket with the introduction of a Girls Strikers League with 8 teams participating in the inaugural competition. The Associations concedes this competition requires more resources and will be looking to improve on last year’s effort. The senior women’s competition in its second year saw 6 clubs represented. To those 6 clubs I thank you for your efforts and expect those clubs to reap the benefits in years to come. Reynella Cricket Club defeating Payneham Cricket Club in a closely fought grand final. Junior cricket has seen a major restructure with Cricket Australia’s Junior Format 1 and 2 introduced over the last 2 years. While the Association has fully accepted Format 1 for the U10 competition, it has chosen to reject the U12 Format 2 rules and will continue to play off the standard pitch length and not the recommend 18 metre pitch length. The Association continues to have a strong and constant Board of Management consisting of 11 dedicated people that continue to support me in the advancement of the Association. I would like to thank Mr Ron Barber, Chairman, Mr Richard Haby, President, Mr Peter Smith, Treasurer and Mr Jeff Emmel, Vice President for their continued guidance on the direction the Association is taking. I feel further comment is required on what is the most unpleasant of duties as Executive Officer, in dealing with players and clubs that continue to breach the ATCA Code of Conduct, resulting in a record number of incidents (44) investigated this season. CAPTAINS NEED TO SERIOUSLY TAKE RESPONSIBILITY to curb player behaviour within the lower grades of our competition. My sincere thanks go to Greg Gade and his Compliance Committee for their assistance in this area. The volunteers who presided over these often complex and challenging matters should receive far more commendation, simple words cannot justify their dedication shown in dealing with such matters. The Association continues its successful relationship with SACA, whose responsibility for the coordination and management of ATCUSA umpires is now in its fifth year, and continues to see an improved outcome in the management of the day to day umpiring function. While the task to produce umpires for the entire top 4 grades continues to prove challenging it is the clubs support we seek to improve umpiring numbers. Most clubs would have players that have recently retired that could make the transition to umpiring a simple process. My thanks go out to Sarah Fry, State Umpiring Leader who is responsible for carrying out this very challenging task. Although somewhat of a challenging year where both Associations were confronted with a difference of opinion over what is best for junior cricket, the Association continues to acknowledge the support it has received from the South Australian Cricket Association. The two Associations have formed an excellent working relationship over many years and I look forward to continuing to build a stronger link between both Associations. I would particularly like to thank SACA General Manager of Community Cricket, Mr Shane Bernhardt and his team for their guidance throughout the season. My role of Executive Officer finds me travelling to various games of cricket where I have the pleasure of watching some fabulous games. What a Job! The highlight of the season saw PAOC break the 3-year stranglehold Pooraka have had on the A1 Premier Competition with a convincing victory at Park 9 to claims its 4th title in the last 10 years. PAOC not satisfied with the A1 Premier Grade Premiership took out the “City Holden” T/20 Division 1 Grand-Final once again defeating Pooraka Cricket Club at the magnificent Adelaide Oval. Congratulations to Prince Alfred Old Collegians Cricket Club on achieving a rare feat. Congratulations to all other teams in all Senior and Junior grades who have been recognised with Premierships. The Annual Senior Presentation night was once again held at the Arkaba Hotel with a record attendance of 304 people with some of the major award winners being:

Jeff Emmel Spirit of Cricket Award – Brighton Cricket Club

A1 Player of the Year Joint Winners – Nathan Fox – Old Scotch CA, Mark Hanson – Pooraka CC and Jarrad Sykes – Hope Valley CC

ATCA Club of the Year – Goodwood Cricket Club

Club Secretary of the Year – Timothy Keen – Goodwood Cricket Club Congratulations must go to all other award winners recognised on the night.

The Association created history with all teams representing the Association successful in the various SAMCA Cup competitions with all teams undefeated over the entire tournament. My personal thanks go out to the senior coach Steve Sykes, U/21 coach Gordon Smith and U/16 coaches Ian Barnes and Allan Sandery, U/14 coach Tony Adams and U/12 coach Wayne Hutchinson and assistant coach Chris Crosby. Volunteers are the life blood of the Association and need to be appreciated and recognised. Sponsorship continues to be a focus for the Association with the Association continuing to source additional income from this sector. Results from this season saw an uplift of $8,800 in Sponsorship. The Association values our sponsors and would like to thank Kookaburra Sports, Fullhammer, JS Sports, Sports Centre, Mega Courts Indoor Sports and City Holden for their support during the year. The Association will be striving to further improve our returns from this avenue. I trust that clubs appreciate and support our sponsors. It needs to be noted that the ATCA is currently seeking legal action against of our apparel sponsors in Beastwear for breach of contract. I also acknowledge the quality administrative assistance I received from Larraine Markesinis, her performance often extends beyond the scope of her duty statement and for that I am most grateful. In closing, I thank all the club officials for their contributions to cricket. I particularly thank the club secretaries for their efforts and I look forward to working with clubs again in season 2019/20. Thanks to all club personnel and Board Members that form the various ATCA sub-committees, your efforts are truly appreciated.

David Heyzer Executive Officer

UMPIRE DIRECTOR’S REPORT

During the 2018-19 season we had great success with many stories and achievements to reflect on. I offer my congratulations to everyone who excelled, accomplished their goals and contributed to the success of umpiring and scoring on and off the field. It was another busy season for all involved where we embraced SACA’s inaugural spirit of cricket round and new umpires joined our ranks while others took up the opportunity to update or take the next step with their accreditation. A large number of appointments were covered across many different competitions and carnivals. Both associations continued to work together to provide umpires with opportunities to officiate in the various carnivals held throughout the season and a selection of umpires were provided with the opportunity to officiate in matches on Adelaide Oval. There was an increase in training and development opportunities offered. This included the season launch, annual seminar, laws study nights, specific panel training nights and the Behind the Bails evening where ICC Match Officials, Ranjan Madugalle, Kumar Dharmasena, Chris Gaffaney and Gerard Abood joined us to share their experiences and stories. Congratulations to Chris Hollard who was recognised for 50 Years of Service to cricket at the SACA Community Cricket Awards. Our Umpire Coaches were also kept busy and again completed an excessive number of assessments, providing quality feedback which contributes to further developing our umpires. The knowledge and experience that they bring to this group and share with all umpires is very valuable and we thank them for all their efforts. Thanks must also go to Daniel Goodwin and Catherine Brown, both Catherine and Daniel worked tirelessly throughout the season to ensure we can sufficiently service all umpires and scorers. We are looking forward to continuing to deliver more training and development opportunities and providing quality support to both ATCA and ATCUSA in the coming season.

Sarah Fry SACA State Umpiring Leader

COMPLIANCE REPORT

At seasons end when I have to sit down to write this report I cannot help but despair that despite continuous monitoring of player and club behaviour the number of reports continues to reach unacceptable levels. It’s an indictment on cricket that this Association spends so much time dealing with player behaviour in particular when there are more pressing issues involving the administration of cricket. Cricket is a game that lends itself to be played in a competitive spirit but there is no place for bad sportsmanship. Maybe the ATCA needs to direct their attention, in this regard, at club captains by holding them in all instances equally responsible for their team’s behaviour and any penalty handed out to recalcitrant players automatically flows to them. That said the Compliance Committee dealt with some forty four (44) compliances issues. A breakdown of those matters included the suspension of a junior coordinator and a scorer/life member for misconduct at junior matches. We had players continuing to play under assumed names, unqualified players in a T20 match resulting in a match reversal, a batsman who was not out overnight and not present when the innings resumed but decided to come in at the fall of the next wicket. This resulted in outright points being taken off the team. We had breaches of both the Media and Match Day Consumption of Alcohol Policies, the latter will have its fines structure reviewed as the current financial penalty does not appear to be a sufficient deterrent. Umpires deliberately flouting the Bylaws resulting in a whole second days play being declared null and void and the match result having to be amended to a draw. Numerous player behaviour reports with penalties ranging from reprimands through to a game high eight (8) match ban. In closing I would like to thank two of my fellow Board Members Rajesh Singh and Don Von Einem for their efforts as panel members along with Mark Wishart who I entrust with the more difficult matters. To the Commissioners Anthony Crocker, Mark Twiggs and Adam Crichton who all play a pivotal role in adjudicating on appeals and who are relied upon on occasions to provide an opinion from a legal perspective as they pertain to interpretation of the Bylaws. As always, a lot of this is not possible without the tireless efforts of the Executive Officer, David Heyzer.

ADELAIDE TURF CRICKET ASSOCIATION INCORPORATED

TREASURERS REPORT FOR THE YEAR ENDED 30 JUNE 2019

Please find accompanying this report the financial statements for the ATCA to the 30 June 2019 The following comments are made in relation to the financial statements:-

The 2018-2019 financial year has resulted in a net loss of $3,377 in comparison to the 12 months to the

end of June 2018 of $5,023.

The ATCA is registered for GST and the results reflect returns after this is accounted for. The Board will

be considering an increase in affiliation fees for 2019-2020, but will continue to be mindful of keeping

them at reasonable levels.

Bank interest received on our investment was similar to last year. The ATCA continues to have $80,000

of ATCA funds invested in a 6 month NAB term deposit account. The current term matures on 23rd

August 2019, when a further $865 interest will be credited to the ATCA cheque account. The ATCA

chose to invest a further $15,000 in a 3 month term deposit which will result in further $85 interest

credited into the cheque account on the 13th August 2019.

Management of debtors resulted in $11,000 outstanding from Beastwear. The ATCA is currently seeking

legal action against Beastwear for breach of contract. Due to the uncertainty of this action this amount

has been listed as a Doubtful Debt, with an Allowance in the Balance Sheet. The ATCA received Marriott

repayments, which resulted in $2,990 paid for this financial year. The ATCA has received a total of

$16,995 from the Fines Enforcement Unit.

The association values our sponsors and would like to thank Kookaburra Sports, Fullhammer, JS Sports,

Sports Centre, Mega Courts Indoor Sports and City Holden for their support during the year. The Board

will be striving to ensure funding from this avenue, continues to benefit the organisation. Support was

also received from SACA to assist with the costs associated with the SAMCA junior inter association

competition.

Expenditure increased by $20,871 to last year. This can be mainly attributed to the doubtful Beastwear

debt and the legal costs associated. Salaries & wages increased as budgeted. Increase in the

Association Matches expense was due to all Association teams progressing to the grand finals. The

control of expenditure remains an important focus for the Board & Administration.

The Association continued to support our exposure to the community, particularly in conjunction with The

Messenger Press.

The ATCA continues its long association with the ATCU&SA. Expenditure on Umpires in the accounts

now refers to the agreement with SACA for providing the support for the training, direction and

management of the umpiring functions.

Rent for the use of the ATCA office at Memorial Drive was paid to the South Australian Tennis

Association until the end of March. The ATCA now has its office located at Thebarton Oval; thanks to the

support of the Adelaide Football League, to which rent is now paid.

As at the 30 June 2019, the board considers that the Associations Funds are adequate in order to allow the

association to: Operate during the off season

Operate with an appropriate level of Financial Security; and

Take advantage of any opportunities that may arise.
