Message from President, MUKTI
As we approach the year 2011, we reflect back and see a year of
great significance has passed. From MUKTI’s perspective, unfortu-
nately the year 2009-10 will be remembered as ‘the year of Aila’,
the cyclone that wreaked havoc on the coastal South and North 24
Parganas districts of West Bengal on May 25, 2009. The cyclone
washed away a diameter as huge as 250-350 km of land, flooded
most of the Sunderbans, and left 10,00,000 helpless people with
little or no access to food, safe drinking water, shelter or medi-
cine.
MUKTI immediately joined the
disaster relief effort. We have
been engaged in relief and
rehabilitation programs. We
provided immediate relief in
the form of cooked/dry food,
water, shelter, utensils, mos-
quito nets, and medical
camps. We followed it up by
long term rehabilitation pro-
grams like the organic agri-
culture movement to restore
fertility of the land and the
community kitchen program
to provide support to the peo-
ple who found themselves on
the verge of a famine–like
situation. In short, MUKTI pro-
vided all the essentials to pre-
vent further human fallout that
usually follows great catastro-
phic disasters similar to the
magnitude of Aila.
Scientists studying the effects
of climate change have pre-
dicted that extreme weather,
along with just a 45 cm rise in
sea levels would submerge 75
percent of the Sunderbans.
The sinking Sunderban islands
are one of the first climate
hotspots in India. It sets a
precedent for the impacts of
sea level rise which poor
populations in low lying
coastal India will face in coming years. Increased displacement of
people due to loss of habitation and land will increase India's
count of climate refugees and add to the burden of poverty under
which we are already reeling. At this critical
juncture where we only have eight years to
act, strong and time bound mitigation meas-
ures must accompany measures for adapta-
tion.
Lack of access to electricity is a great chal-
lenge to India’s rural economy. The need for
increased production of electricity in a growing economy often
stands in conflict with the need for measures to mitigate global
warming. An environmentally friendly way to electrify and boost
the rural economy like that of alternative renewable would pro-
vide a way out of this deadlock.
MUKTI’s Project GrEEN (Green Energy for Ecology and Nature)
addresses this issue by promoting solar and other renewable en-
ergy sources for village livelihoods. In collaboration with organi-
zations like TERI (The Energy Research Institute headed by Dr. R K
Pachauri), Cosmos Ignite of Delhi, and One Million Lights of USA,
MUKTI is all set to address the issue of electricity in the Sunder-
bans, and to fight global warming in the process.
The year 2009-10 will be also known for MUKTI family’s growth in
the form of Mukti Qatar. Recently a significant number of dedi-
cated volunteers from Qatar came forward and formed the MUKTI
Qatar chapter. MUKTI Qatar is committed to a focus on Indian
socio-economic issues with a prominent vision-defined mission.
MUKTI Qatar partnered with MUKTI India and TERI to make pro-
ject GrEEN a success.
I must mention our continuation with well-known and appreciated
projects like Book Bank, Coaching program, Village Computer
Literacy Program (VCLP), Talented Student Sponsorship (TSS) and
other projects in even larger scale than before, with great help
and support from more than 500 volunteers and 11 collaborating
organizations from around the world.
Thank you very much for all of your great help, and congratula-
tions to all the dedicated activists for the success achieved so far.
Let us continue to work together, so that we can continue to bring
positive change to the silently suffering sections of society.

Dry Food Help:
MUKTI immediately joined the disaster
relief effort. They started moving the
stranded people in affected areas to higher
grounds. MUKTI distributed dry food and
medicines to thousands of people in Braja-
ballavpur, Namkhana, Haripur, Brajabal-
lavpur GP, Kultali Block 19 Number Bhasa
(Bhubaneswari) and Amtala GP. They also
distributed milk powder to approximately
350 mothers with children ages between 0
to 12 months.
Cooked Food Help:
They started running food kitchen at differ-
ent centers spread out throughout the dis-
aster affected region. They provided
cooked food to 3500 affected villagers on a
daily basis. MUKTI also provided some
relief work at the Amtala GP. The spon-
sored one day food and meal for approxi-
mately 250 villagers.
Medicines, Clothes, Tarpaulin:
MUKTI donated medicines for 200 persons
to a government run medical center and
also donated clothes for 50 persons and
distributed to the needy people in the af-
fected villages. They organized camps in
19 number and Bhasa villages
and distributed clothes to the
villagers. More than 1700 peo-
ple were benefited with this
program.
MUKTI distributed 300 canvas
sheets in Samanta Para and
Damkal villages in Nagen-
drapur. They encouraged peo-
ple who were staying in the
temporary relief centers for
more than a week to return to
their own land and build tempo-
rary shelters with the tripals provided.
They tried to help displaced people back
to their home with food for few days. 200
mosquito nets were given to victims in
Nandakumarpur, Mathurapur-II.
‘Food for Work’ Drive:
MUKTI successfully finished
‘Food for work’ program. They
reconstructed river embank-
ment at Dakhin Kashi Nagar in
Herabagopalpur GP, Kuyamuri,
Purba Chintamonipur, Damakal
Ganga Ghat in Nagendraopur
GP, Banashyamnagar GP and
Amtali GP.
Cyclonic Storm Aila wrecked havoc on the coastal South 24 Parganas district of West Bengal on May 25, 2009. Aila was the second tropi-
cal storm formed in Northern Indian Ocean in 2009.
Facts:
According to an IANS report, as
many as 5.3 million people have
been affected by Cyclone Aila.
In state West Bengal, an
estimated 40,000 homes
were destroyed and
132,000 others were
damaged.
In India, nearly 50,000
hectares of agricultural
land was lost during the
storm, costing an
estimated Rs. 125 crore
(US$26.3 million).

MUKTI arranged few medical camps to help people to fight with different illness. These water bornes diseases usually provide more
hardship to the already affected people following a great disaster like Aila. They also executed rehabilitation program for restoration of
local water bodies to provide sweet water and to restrict spreading of diseases. MUKTI helped farmers by distributing cultivated Paddy
Seedling, teaching different agricultural practices that are economically viable, environmentally sound. They also provided educational
materials to many helpless students.
Sustainable Agricultural Project:
MUKTI and BTS jointly finished a pilot Sus-
tainable Agricultural project with the help
of AID. They helped farmers to adopt agri-
cultural practices that are economically
viable, environmentally sound. They were
trained to prepare seed bed like how to
raise crops in their home gardens, contain-
ers and community fields. They are also
trained to prepare Bio-Inputs like Amrit,
Fish, Coconut and Herbal Tonic. These
microbial rich bio solutions are the main
component of soil reclamation process.
It will drastically reduce the cost of cultiva-
tion and improve the soil fertility. Practical
demonstrations are given to the farmers.
Main area of work was Kultali, Patharpra-
tima and Mathurapur CD Block. Each
farmer is supplied 50gm Bin, 100gm Palon,
25gm Mula, 12.5 gm Piring and 12.5 grm
Kolmi to start their work. Women self help
groups already functioning in the villages.
MUKTI is encouraging them for a large

Medical Camps:
MUKTI arranged few medical camps in
different places to help flood affected peo-
ple to fight with different illness. They
treated around 450-500 patients in Kumir-
mari, 200 patients in Gosaba Block 2
(Chowrasta), 300 patients in Haripur, Ma-
danganj and Chandanpiri under Namkhana
Block. All patients were provided proper
treatment as well as medical counseling.
Most of the people were suffering from
stomach upset, dysentery, skin disease
and other water borne diseases. ORS was
also distributed among patients.
Sweet Water Projects:
MUKTI started their rehabilitation program
for restoration of local Water bodies to
provide Sweet Water among Aila victims
and restricting spreading diseases. MUKTI
cleaned nearly 12 ponds in G-plot area
comprising 7 villages and 10 big commu-
nity ponds in K Plot GP of Pathar Pratima
Block.
MUKTI Educational Rehabilita-
tion Program (MERP):
MUKTI provided educational materials like
books, white paper, pen, school bag etc to
Aila affected students who have lost their
house and all belongings and not able to
continue their studies.
500 students in each GP from class V to X
got books from MUKTI. Besides this MUKTI
distributed school books for all classes
from 5 to 12 in 3 schools and educational
materials to 167 students in Dakhinkashi
Jana High School.
Paddy seedling to support Agri-
culture:
MUKTI team cultivated Paddy Seedling in
Kumrapara, Nandakumarpara, Kakandighi
and Nagendrapur and handed it over to
more than 100 farmers, who were helpless
as they could not germinate seeds as acres
of land were submerged under saline wa-
ter. MUKTI also joined hands with SUNDER-
BAN DEVELOPMENT
BOARD (SDB) and dis-
tributed paddy seed-
lings to 180 acre of land
in extra remote area
like Basanti.

On 7th December, 2009, a rally program
was conducted from Victoria Memorial
gate to Netaji Indoor Stadium not only to
raise a voice against the global warming
but also to create awareness about its fatal
impact on the delta region of Sunderban .
Almost 30,000 people including environ-
mental activist, journalists, common peo-
ple and school students from different re-
gions participated.
Activists of MUKTI participated to that rally
and spread their specific demands for sun-
derban at the program. They distributed
fliers and cards to the Honorable Minister
Kanti Ganguly, honourable deligates Mr. P.
K. Banerjee, Mr. Sailen Manna, Mr. Masdur
Rehman, Mr. Satipada Ganchowdhury and
others. The papers are also distributed
among participating people, students and
press journalists.
MUKTI attended the seminar inside Netaji
Indoor stadium and took initiative to launch
a common forum to save and work for Sun-
derban. They invited like minded people,
NGOs and associations to join the form and
work together.
The demands of MUKTI are:

speech. He mentioned how spending few
minutes on each of these elements can
enhance and maintain a comfortable state
of mind and its expressions.
The discussion also emphasized on main-
taining health, proper body weight, nutri-
tious food habits and regular exercise to
achieve happiness. The event did help the
youth of Sundarban to have a clear idea
regarding leading a healthy, successful
and happy life. The UN declared the year 2010 as the In-
ternational Year of Biodiversity and Inter-
national Year of youth. Keeping this and
worldwide events for youth in mind, MUKTI
India organized an event for the youth of
Sundarban on 10th January, 2010. Dr.
Siddhartha Ganguly, an Anatomist con-
ducted a discussion leading a successful
happy life through body and brain. The
event was organized by Judhisthir Halder,
Madhusudan Bairagi, Coaching centre
teacher and other members of MUKTI.
The event took place at Santosh Gorai
Balika Vidyalaya, Kankandighi, Sundarban,
West Bengal, where 100 students of class 8
and 9 from eight coaching centre par-
ticipated. The discussion encom-
passed issues relating achieving true
happiness without making others un-
happy.
Dr. Ganguly also clarified that a state
of unhappiness should not be ac-
cepted as destiny. He described how
brain controls all the elements of our
body and all the feelings of our mind.
He pointed out that everyone should
spend some time each day thinking
over the factors that brings happi-
ness. He lectured over six critical
elements of our body language –
walking, arm position, eye-contact,
posture, facial expressions and

On 23rd January 2010, on the 114th birth
anniversary of one of the greatest leaders
in the Indian independence movement,
Subhash Chandra Bose, MUKTI organized a
two day educational program aimed at
helping the students of Kankandighi Gram
Panchayat and Nagendrapur Gram Pancha-
yat to do well in the Madhyamik examina-
tion. The session was conducted by the
teachers of Dumdum K. K. Hindu Academy.
28 girls and 36 boys of Kankandighi Gram
Panchayat and 41 girls and 35 boys of Na-
gendrapur Gram Panchayat attended the
program. The students were from Jata Na-
gendrapur High School, Nagendrapur
Hetamkumari High School, Jata Jogen-
drapur High School, Babujan Sipai High
School and Panchanan Shikshaniketan.
On 23rd January the program started at 10
am with Mr. Probir Banerjee offering Floral
tribute to Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. This
was followed by flag hoisting after which
all the teachers of Dumdum Hindu Acad-
emy, teachers and volunteers of Mukti,
students and villagers offered their respect
and homage to Netaji. The first day's ses-
sion span 7 hours where the key points for
success in the Madhyamik examinations
were stressed. The teachers emphasized
on solving previous year's papers, com-
plete revision, proper time management
during exam, answering of full number of
questions, careful reading of the question
during exam, rechecking of answers and
proper organiza-
tion of thoughts. At
5-30 pm on the first
day after the edu-
cational session
MUKTI India did
arrange a cultural
show by the stu-
dents.
The show con-
cluded with a song
by Mr Nityananda
Pal, the Head Mas-
ter of Dumdum KK
Hindu Academy. The accommodation and
food for the students and teachers were
arranged by MUKTI.
On 24th January the program started at 8
am. Chemistry, History, Bengali and
Mathematics sessions were conducted by
respective teachers who stressed on tips
for scoring high marks in the examination
like writing practice, maintaining proper
time table etc. After the completion of the
teaching, Sri Barun Halder was awarded
for his success in the examination last year.
Panchanan Das and Mamoni Halder, two
students described how they got benefit-
ted by attending the educational camp.

event in the forms of pictures and videos.
The distribution ceremony was accompa-
nied with an interactive training session
aiming at imparting correct knowledge
regarding usage of the lamps instead of
kerosene lanterns for lighting purposes.
The audience response in the event and
planning for further progress in the solar
projects between the collaborators of the
event promised success for the future solar
projects.
Sundarban, the largest inter-tidal delta
region of the world, is formed by the
Ganges, Brahmaputra and Meghna rivers.
The unique landscape of marshlands,
dense forest of large mangroves and salt
water swamp lying along the Bay of Bengal
from the Hooghly River Estuary of India
and the Meghna River Estuary in Bangla-
desh is also the home of the famous Royal
Bengal Tiger along with many birds, croco-
diles and other forest animals and aquatic
creatures. Besides its characteristic flora
and fauna, Sundarban is also inhabited by
more than 4 million people of which ap-
proximately 60% fall below the poverty
level.
Due to disadvantageous geographical lo-
cation and non-availability of grid quality
power the residents
of Sundarban suffer
from chronic short-
age of electrical en-
ergy and have to
depend on expen-
sive and inconsis-
tently available kero-
sene oil for lighting
purposes.
On 25th December,
2009, MUKTI India, in
collaboration with MUKTI for Social
Development, USA and OneMil-
lionLights, USA distributed 40 solar
lamps among the talented but
needy students some underprivi-
leged villagers of Dakshin
Kankandighi, Sundarban, West
Bengal. This marked the initiation
of the partnership between MUKTI
for Social Development, USA, One-
MillionLights, USA and MUKTI In-
dia. MUKTI for Social Development,
USA is a California, USA based
NGO focused on fostering self reli-
ant and thriving communities
amongst low-income and under-privileged
and on creating nurturing environment
where every individual in the society can
reach their full potential. OneMillionLights,
USA is a USA based NGO trying o reach out
with their solar projects to people in parts
of the world where there is no electricity.
MUKTI for Social Development arranged
for the necessary funds, whereas OneMil-
lionLights matched three-fold for the initial
lot.
The event was organized by Mr. Judhistir
Halder, Coordinator of the Coaching Cen-
tre Project and other members of MUKTI
India. Mr. Himan Mukherjee, representa-
tive of MUKTI for Social Development and
OneMillionLights, Ms Koel Ghorai, Chief

Even though West Bengal Ex-
amination Board does not make
it compulsory to conduct exami-
nations in this subject, MUKTI
volunteers routinely made sur-
prise performance checks of the
students through examination,
informal queries and question-
naire to random students. Not to
our amazement and to our pleas-
ure, MUKTI evaluation of the
VCLP program at Kashinagar
High School was found to be
very progressive. One of their
main inputs was that it is indeed
true that the students were get-
ting well acquainted with the
subject which was not even heard of by
their parents a year back.
The same is the story at Guptipara at
Hooghly district which is primarily a com-
puter centre for the sole purpose to impart
training to the needy people free of cost by
providing them career oriented training.
The trainings are mostly on application
packages on topics related to Finance,
AutoCAD, and Tally etc. The trainings are
imparted by a computer learned person
along with two more local Guptipara volun-
teers using two computers.
A huge round of applause and thanks defi-
nitely goes to TCS since their computers
are key in shaping futures both for school
students as well as trained personnel who
otherwise would never have dreamt to
learn these important subjects amidst their
socio-economic hardships. VCLP has been
in past and will be in future, a very suc-
cessful program in creating a big and posi-
tive difference for this impoverished sec-
tion of society.
MUKTI Designed a grand project called
‘Village Computer Literacy Pro-
gram’ (VLCP) with the sole noble intention
of imparting free and needed computer
education to the poor and
interested students of the
Sunderban area. The pro-
gram was imparted with
the help of Tata Consul-
tancy Services Ltd. (TCS)
which donated total 19
computers to MUKTI. With
the much needed input,
MUKTI went on to set-up
four different labs; one
within the Kashinagar High
School situated in Kashina-
gar near Kakdwip in South
24 Parganas district; one at
Guptipara situated in the
Hooghly district of West
Bengal; one at Bankura
facilitated by MUKTI
Bankura chapter and the most recent one
at a Coaching centre at Gobindapur vil-
lage, near Kakdwip.
The Kashinagar High School is a mid to
large size school comprising of approxi-
mately 750 students. The students are stu-
dious, meritorious but unfortunately do not
possess the liberty of even having a com-
puter in reality in their lives. Four com-
puters from TCS were donated to this
school which set-up a computer room. The
teachings were impacted by computer
literate teachers from the school, trained
initially by two MUKTI volunteers who even
helped with the set-up of the computer
room. Not only the students but even their
parents were excited. The classes are or-
ganized twice a week. Since learning com-
puters is a huge subject in itself and that
these students were relatively unknown to
this subject, the training program was pri-
marily divided into two parts
The first was to impart Practical knowledge
(Microsoft Office software packages like
Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and MS Paint)
and the second part was to impart Theo-
retical knowledge (basics of computer
system, its architecture, numbering system
etc.). The main emphasis was for students
to have realized the knowledge of com-
puter system and its application which in
turn would help them in their higher stud-
ies. Keeping in mind the limitations in num-
ber of computers and training personnel (1
teacher and 4 computers), the computer
classes were not made compulsory to the
students. Only interested computer educa-
tion seekers between classes V to X were
entertained. MUKTI received wide support
from the school headmaster, Mr. Shyamal
Samanta, who has been very keen and
enthusiastic of the project. He is also happy
with the progress of his students’ education
in this subject. His idea aligns with ours in
the sense that if we can provide and ar-
range more computers in the future, more
and more students can facilitate from the
program and make a better living or
higher studies through it. Talking about
students, a classic example of one of the
brightest is Ms. Swagata Mandal of class
VI. She has already started showing confi-
dence not only in operating computers on
her own but also realizes that her dream to
become a doctor is not totally unrealistic
and it will come true through vigorous hard

MUKTI Extended its Book Bank help to 14
Aila Affected Schools of Sunderban. The
Book Bank is the student resource for all
the Course Books that a student may re-
quire for his academic pursuits from Class
5 to Class 12. The Book Bank offers issuing
of books and also provides all enrolled
students with all his course books for a
period of one year. Our books go to chil-
dren, the ill, and the indigent, in places
where there is no access to books.
MUKTI Stretched their hands to help 1500
students in 5 Block areas of the Aila af-
fected schools. MUKTI successfully organ-
ized MERP (MUKTI Education Rehabita-
tion Programme) in different school in the
area namely Kultali, Jharkhali, G plot & K
Plot. MUKTI Volunteers visited the individ-
ual School & distributed the book where
the student does not have access to books

routine basis through its network of volun-
teers. This activity will be coordinated by
MUKTI's regional Education Coordinator.
Performance indicators such as updated
school results will be gathered; feedback
from school teachers will be solicited as
necessary. MUKTI will track on-going
needs for each student and will communi-
cate this to sponsoring individuals/
agencies to ensure that there is no inter-
ruption in a child’s' education. MUKTI will
also elicit local feedback on the financial
situation of the families.
The TSS Project is a scholarship program
created by MUKTI through which individ-
ual students are provided with the support
required to get access to a structured edu-
cation. This proposal, prepared by the
board of MUKTI, outlines the financial sup-
port required for implementation of the
project. Additionally, MUKTI requests the
sponsor to consider extending financial
support over several years for the selected
student so that the targeted student can get
established in his/her life.
Total 110 students from 24 Parganas(South
& North), Bankura and Midnapure were
sponsored in this year.
The selection of students is based on both
means and merit. The following criteria are
used for selecting students for TSS funding:

feedback from their respective school
teachers are indicators of the student's
ability.

ized to appraise a family's financial
situation.
The approximate annual in-
come of the family is used an
indicator to determine the
family’s inability to provide
adequate financial support for
their child.
The assessed annual budget
per student is 5,000 INR in this
year. This amount takes care
of the following:
All required textbooks
will be purchased and
provided to students by MUKTI.
Other required expenses like school
fees, exercise books, pen, pencil etc
will be provided.
A school uniform will be provided to
each student.
A small amount is provided to each
student on a monthly basis to provide
for some basic necessities such as
