Making a diff erence in our community…
2009 Annual Report
“Come forth into the light of things, Let Nature be your teacher.” — William Wordsworth
DEAR FOSANC MEMBERS AND FRIENDS,
The Fiscal Year 2008 /2009 was one of the more challenging in our 38 years, largely due to the economic times. SANC revenues, like most non-profi ts, were reduced. However, due to several management decisions that did not include laying off members of our staff , we fi nished the year with a balanced budget. This could not have been achieved without the great support of our board members and staff .
In addition, we raised specifi c funds for the expansion of our preschool. The renovation of two classrooms into one larger room provided us with the opportunity to accommodate an increasing number of younger children wanting to attend our summer camps. This past summer we served over 930 children compared to last year’s campers which were 680. This new preschool room will also provide classroom space for urban preschool partnerships, helping us to make even more of a diff erence in our community. We thank the individuals and foundations who funded this project, especially in this diffi cult economy.
SANC and its 185 acre site are many things to many people. It continues to be a place for recreation, a place to learn about the natural world, an outdoor classroom to learn natural science, and a nationally designated Important Bird Area (IBA). Our land stewardship staff and their very dedicated volunteers are responsible for maintaining and restoring the Center’s native plant
communities. In this past year, we had more than 17,000 volunteer hours at the Center.
The Center is a classroom to more than 35,000 school children from throughout the seven counties in South-eastern Wisconsin. We provide “quality, relevant, exciting and inspiring” programs that enrich and enhance programs at individual schools. Many of these children have never seen Lake Michigan or been in a natural area. The opportunity to see a ten point buck, wild turkeys and a great blue heron will always be a positive and memorable experience.
Our raptor program continues to grow and our 15raptors include two bald eagles. We continue to use these non-releasable birds as environmental educational ambassadors through on-site and outreach programs.
The Center is truly something special; an asset to Southeast Wisconsin and a fun place to visit and learn. A special thanks to all of our members, donors, volunteers and staff who are important to our continued success in connecting people to nature.
John S. McGregor Elizabeth B. CheekBoard President Executive Director

WHAT OTHERS ARE SAYING ABOUT THE SCHLITZ AUDUBON NATURE CENTER
2
“I am so appreciative of her Nature School beginnings. They’ve had show and tell several times, and while all of the other children are bringing in their favorite toys, Margaret has brought in her favorite leaves, some seed pods and dug some things out of the garden to show diff erent types of root systems.” — Mother of a preschool alumnus
“I am reading Last Child in the Woods, about nature defi cit, and am so glad we had this chance to take our kids out. Your program was very eff ective and presented exactly to our level.”— First grade teacher, Parkway School
“Thank you for the hike yesterday, I had a blast. The lake sounds really relax me a lot. It took some stress off my chest and mind.”— Eighth grade student, Blessed Savior South Campus
“The teachers did an outstanding job with the use of materials, pictures and live plants. I don’t think the children had any idea the problems that invasive species cause to our forests.” — Fourth grade teacher, Our Lady Queen of Peace
When a father asked his daughter what she wanted him to bring home to her from his trip to Scotland, she replied, “Grass and leaves – to see what they look like from another country.”— Parent of preschool student
“Thank you for continually providing quality, relevant, exciting and inspiring school trips at your facility. Your off erings coincide fl awlessly with our curriculum and we continue to fi nd ways in which your programs can enrich, enhance, and extend ours.”— Second grade teacher, Swallow School
“Thank you for letting us come for our fi eld trip. I loved holding the rat and seeing all the animals in the woods.”— Tenth grade student, Milwaukee Academy
“I can always tell which of my students went to the Schlitz Audubon Nature Center Preschool. These children are in tune with nature, are extremely creative and good problem solvers.”— Teacher, Stormonth School
An endowment fund, owned by the National Audubon Society and managed by the Marshall & Ilsley Trust Co., was initiated in 1971 by a local donor. As of June 30, 2009, the endowment fund had an approximate market value of $2,825,651. Schlitz Audubon Nature Center draws a fraction of the average market value of the endowment to partially cover operating expenses of the Center.
An endowment fund owned by Friends of Schlitz Audubon Nature Center and managed by Marshall & Ilsley Trust Co. was established in 2004 from funds contributed to the capital campaign in excess of building costs. Funds contributed through bequests and special gifts are also included in this fund. These funds may or may not be donor restricted. The FOSANC Board of Directors approves all uses of these funds except those that are donor restricted. Schlitz Audubon Nature Center draws a fraction of the average market value of the endowment to partially cover operating expenses of the Center. As of June 30, 2009, the approximate market value of the fund was $1,503,833.
A cash reserve fund owned by Friends of Schlitz Audubon Nature Center and managed by Marshall & Ilsley Trust Co. was established in 2008. As of June 30, 2009, the value of the fund was $496,120.
Friends of Schlitz Audubon Nature Center is an income benefi ciary of money owned and managed by the Greater Milwaukee Foundation. These funds partially cover operating expenses of the Center.

In Memory of MonnieOn August 12, 2009, the Schlitz
Audubon Nature Center said good
bye to Mary D. “Monnie” Messinger,
a remarkable woman and dear
friend. Her leadership as one of the
Center’s founders, as a member of
the original Board of Directors, as
a volunteer and as an enthusiastic
fundraiser for the Center will be
sorely missed.
In 1977, Monnie received the Pro
Urbe award from Mount Mary
College, and in 1986 she was the
recipient of the William C. Frye
Award from the Greater Milwaukee
Foundation; both awards were in
recognition of her volunteer service
to the Milwaukee community
and bestowed, in part, because
of Monnie’s tireless and successful
eff orts to create awareness and
support for the Schlitz Audubon
Nature Center.
