Building Futures Together for 50 yearsAs we report fiscal year 2009, we proudly celebrate Aspire’s 50th anniversary. In doing so, we reflect on our past and look to our future.

In 1960, ten young families rejected the advice of doctors and views of society to believe their children, all with a developmental disability, deserved to live, learn and grow in the community. In a time when parents were encouraged to place children with disabilities in an institution and move on with their lives, these families founded our agency with a unique, pioneering spirit.

It’s been a remarkable journey over the past 50 years. We’ve gone from ten families meeting in a church basement to a comprehensive nonprofit serving more than 1,000 children, adults and their families with a wide range of caring programs changing 50 Chicagoland communities. At times, this growth has come with challenges. But with the support of our family and friends, Aspire has always focused on building futures together and thrived.

The pioneering spirit of our founders lives on in our innovative programs, the continual growth of our agency and our drive to become more independent from state funding. Our new earned income venture Aspire CoffeeWorks begins that work by expanding our vocational training programs, allowing us to rely less on the state and positioning us as a leader in our industry and a model for businesses nationwide.

We are still a living testament to our name and the spirit of our founders — aspiring to assist people of all abilities to reach a little farther, a little higher. Join us in celebrating the past 50 years and looking forward to the next 50 through the stories of Michelle, Ashley, Bruce, Nolan and Eugene — their challenges, successes and dreams.

Now that I’m getting my own place, I am on cloud nine!

Michelle DreamsMichelle always wanted to live in a ranch house just like the home she grew up in. She smiles broadly as she tells friends, family and even strangers about her lifelong wish.

After Michelle finished high school ten years ago, she moved into an Aspire community home with six other women. Recently, she decided she was ready to find a new place to live. Michelle presented Aspire staff with the idea in a booklet she illustrated with pictures of her goals and dreams. Aspire has been working with Michelle on her move to a one-story home ever since. Soon she will live with a roommate and a companion who will teach both women how to run their household. Michelle’s dreams don’t stop there. She has plans to get a job in her community someday.

“I am reaching my goals one step at a time,”

Michelle says with joy. “First, I will learn

how to do chores in my new house. Then

I will find out how to get around my

neighborhood. Aspire is helping me have

my own life.”

Ashley GrowsAshley is on the go. The busy two-year-old walks, runs, climbs the stairs and stands on her tiptoes to reach her favorite toys, the telephone and the remote. She never stops talking. Typical milestones for a child her age, but so much more than her mother, Milea, expected when Ashley was born a “micropreemie,” weighing only 22 ounces and measuring 12 inches long.

When Ashley went home after four months in an intensive care nursery, the hospital recommended the services of Aspire. From the beginning, Aspire specialists have visited Ashley’s home regularly to work with her on movement, gross and fine motor skills, communication and health concerns. The team of pediatric therapists teaches Ashley’s family members to adapt therapy into her playtime and other activities that are part of their daily lives. Ashley is making great strides and Milea beams when she says that the possibilities for her healthy toddler are boundless.

“The people from Aspire are like part

of our family. They inspire us and raise

our expectations,” explains Milea.

“The best is yet to come.”

I’m working hard to make Aspire CoffeeWorks even greater.

Bruce StrivesBruce takes his coffee with a little cream and a lot of pride. This Aspire CoffeeWorks employee is looking forward to the big stuff — training future employees and experiencing business success.

Last summer Bruce applied for a job at Aspire CoffeeWorks, Aspire’s new venture marketing fresh-roasted coffees while providing vocational training to adults with disabilities. As one of the production staff, he fills orders, labels bags and grinds coffee. Bruce excels at improving his focus at work and getting to know his coworkers during breaks. According to Bruce, the most rewarding part of his job is helping Aspire. The profits from Aspire CoffeeWorks allow Aspire to rely less on state funding, making the business a vital component of Aspire’s future. Bruce is proud to be a part of it.

just keep smiling,” says Bruce. “I can see

top coffee companies.”

Nolan ReachesNolan wants to be Spiderman, his favorite superhero, when he grows up. Thanks partly to Aspire, the kindergartener is well on his way to gaining the super strength and agility needed. When Nolan was first diagnosed with cerebral palsy, doctors could not predict if he would ever be able to sit independently or hold his head up. Nolan’s parents, Kara and Dave, turned to Aspire for help.

Since Nolan was six months old, the staff and therapists at Aspire have teamed up with Kara and Dave to set goals for their son. Each time, Nolan has exceeded the bar they set. He crawled before he was two. He walked first with a walker and then without one. He learned to jump. At six and a half, Nolan plays basketball and soccer, rides a bicycle, enjoys gymnastics class and is choosing his own goals. This year he hopes to run faster.

“Aspire taught us there are no

restrictions on Nolan’s potential

and no end point,” says Kara.

“We have very high hopes for

his future.”

Being independent makes me so happy!

Eugene AchievesEugene is moving forward and aiming high. A quiet and reserved man, he proudly explains he is ready to hold two jobs, live in a smaller home and manage his own schedule.

Eugene asked Aspire staff to help him achieve his goal of being more independent. This year, in addition to working at a nearby restaurant, he started cleaning his church once a week. He recently moved from a large community home into an Aspire apartment with two other men. He appreciates having a private bedroom and is learning to do household chores. He arranges his activities, which include attending church, going to the library, volunteering and taking karate lessons. Eugene likes being more self-sufficient, but also knows he can go to his roommates and to Aspire whenever he needs guidance. What’s next on his list of aspirations? Writing his life story.

“My mother always told me ‘you have to

do things for yourself.’ She made me believe

that I could,” says Eugene with confidence.

“Aspire encourages me to continue reaching

for that goal. They make things happen.”

Our ServicesAspire provides award-winning services to more than 1,000 children, adults and their families. Whether we help a child take her first steps or assist an adult to find his first job our goal is always the same—helping people with developmental disabilities to reach a little farther, a little higher and aspire to new possibilities.

Aspire Children’s Services assists children with developmental delays and disabilities to aspire and reach their unique potential. Our family-centered services help infants and children improve their functioning in order to reach important developmental milestones. Our services for children are: Pediatric Therapies, Specialized Services, and Family Support.

Aspire Adult Services provides a range of programs which help adults with disabilities to realize their goals and dreams. We work with all individuals to discover their strengths and interests, and then provide the individualized services that help them to live full and meaningful lives. Our services for adults are: Residential Choices, Life Skills Training, Employment Options and Senior Care.
