Since 1965, WTVI has served the Charlotte-Mecklenburg area with high quality television that harnesses the incredible power of broadcast to benefit the community. The Federal Communications Commission has granted the license to use a reserved, educational, noncommercial channel to the board of this community station to serve the public interest.

In 1981, Mecklenburg County and the school system came together to form the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Public Broadcasting Authority, with continuous financial support from the County through last year. In FY ’11, the operating support was zeroed out and was not restored in FY ’12.

Although the station is also supported through contributions from the community and local businesses, and a grant from the federal government, the soft economy has caused considerable financial stress and the station ended the FY 10-11 fiscal year with a $300,000 loss and dipped into its small reserves.

TelevisionIn spite of financial challenges, WTVI broadcast 26,280 hours of quality television programming free, over-the-air, to 13 counties in the central Piedmont region of the Carolinas. Deploying three separate channels, WTVI offers its main high definition channel of traditional children’s and general audience programming, a second channel called Create with how-to and travel lifestyle programming, and a third WorldView channel with international news broadcasts targeted at Charlotte’s growing international community.

Because other state networks are also available in this community, WTVI only purchases 25% of PBS’ national program service and strategically places those program choices to not duplicate the other stations. Because of this strategy, WTVI can say that only 8% of its programming can be seen on other channels, or put another way, 92% of all of WTVI’s programming is non-duplicative! And audiences in this metropolitan area are obviously happy with WTVI’s choices as this station continues to lead in viewership.

LocalNot only are programming decisions made by and for localindividuals, WTVI is proud of the number of national programsproduced here. Four series, Everyday Edisons, Raggs Kids’ Club, the Chef’s Wife, and For Your Home were distributed all over the Country, as were specials Our Vanishing Americana, Blue Ridge Parkway: A Long and Winding Road, and The Peter Francisco Story. And WTVI continues to offer local series and specials such as United Way & You, Carolina Business Review, HealthWise, Daily Balance, Good Works, Pre-election debates, County Commission Meetings, Carolina Calling, Changing Places, Christmastown USA, Hometown Stories, How I Survived World War II, Sojourn of the Strings and Sudan: Suffering & Survival.

Community ServiceIn the FY 2010-11 year, WTVI has provided an outstanding complement of outreach and community service activities ranging from Raising Readers workshops for at-risk children, donations of hundreds of books to families, services to community partners such as Hands On Charlotte, the Public Library, the League of Women Voters, the Charlotte Chamber of Commerce, and many many others!

One of the year’s highlights was a visit from the Freedom Riders project which stopped in Charlotte specifically because of WTVI’s national reputation for outstanding community outreach. Standing-room-only crowds witnessed an emotional connection between 1961 Freedom Riders veterans and college-age students re-creating the historic ride.

AwardsWTVI was nominated for six regional Emmy awards, received a national PBS Development Inspiration Award, and is proud to have been accredited by the Better Business Bureau.

“After attending a WTVI workshop, I had my first mammogram, had the malignant lump removed, my doctor said early enough. Today I am cancer free…

Thank you WTVI”

“The workshop prepared us, both elderly, with questions for an investment seminar or we would have fallen victim to investment fraud”

Gladys and Frank

“I heard about the GED program when I first started participating in the Raising Readers program. I had found excuses when my kids asked me to read to them, and I ignored it when they received papers from school. Now that I have my GED and know the importance of reading and writing, my daughter’s grades have increased from C’s to A’s. I am a full partner in my children’s education” LaShonda

“Thank you for making possible an event that touched many people. Both the folks on the Freedom Riders bus and the attendees in the church that evening told us again and again how deeply they appreciated Charlotte’s commemoration of this history” Tom
