Presidents Report
It is with great honour that I present to you the Annual Report for Southport Surf Life Saving Club season 2019‐2020. Our thoughts and prayers go to the families who have experienced hardship or the passing of someone they love. Season 2019‐2020 will always be remembered as the season of “unprecedented mes.” The drama c shutdown of our opera ons and ac vi es due to the COVID‐19 pandemic response prohibited the usual celebra ons of lifesaving that we an cipate and prepare for each year. Despite this dominant memory, season 2019‐2020 was one of our most successful as a lifesaving club. For me, the publica on of our club
values signals the most important achievement this season. Other successes included but are not limited to; Club wide consulta on on a core set of values Largest junior ac vi es enrolment in our history 2nd largest ac ve (patrolling) membership in South Coast branch 2nd largest nipper membership in South Coast branch Largest overall membership in South Coast branch 3rd largest increase in ac ve membership 2nd highest amount of preventa ve ac ons across the south coast (South Coast branch + Point
Danger branch) All management commi ee members trained in governance Sub‐lease to Supporters Club dra ed Selected as one of two clubs to trial the new Bronze Medallion course Southport Masters Carnival Ending season ahead of budget and contribu ng more cash to bank than last season
This long list of successes will be added to in further reports within this annual report. Thank you to the management commi ee who con nue to lead our club into the future with strength. This past season the President’s commi ee has been ac vely involved in the review of strategic planning. Thank you to the members of the President’s commi ee for your though ulness in this endeavor; Grace Champion Freya Brown Ethan Wentworth Archie Fenton Maeka Free Carol Templeton Jazmin Lewsam Helen Williams
9 Southport Surf Life Saving Annual Report 2019‐2020
The commitment of our staff to Southport SLSC was demonstrated through the recent COVID shutdowns. Each staff member provides valuable insight into the tasks relevant to their role and without their work we simply could not lead or manage our club. All staff were engaged in a plan to reduce hours and subsequently wage earned, during the difficult period. Despite the subsidisa on of the jobkeeper payment, Pierce, Amanda, Emma and Brooke voluntarily agreed to wage reduc ons to support our cub through a difficult me. For that we cannot thank them enough. Thank you to Michael Wood, Deputy President, who has shown consistent support and caring to me throughout this season. Thank you also to Amanda Burrows for her diligence and commitment behind the scenes, enabling my performance in this role.

Building
Maintenance of the buildings is an ongoing process and the ques on
of maintenance verse improvements is regularly debated when looking
at expenditure on our buildings. We con nue to be careful in making
decisions on spending funds on buildings or parts of buildings that are
ageing. The recent Covid‐19 challenge has meant we have been even
more diligent in making these decisions. The focus has been on urgent
maintenance only. Projects on hold or deferred for the immediate
future include.
Sound baffling on the upper walls and ceiling of the Pavilion and
Maintenance to the southern end of the Surf Club building
In April we had a visit from an Engineer looking at the structural integrity of our buildings. Arranged by
the Council this independent contractor was part of process the Council has underway visi ng buildings
around the Coast. No immediate issues were noted.
Recently we have been in discussion with Council to have the paths around the western and northern
sides of the Pavilion looked at. The concrete here is chipped badly and is a poten al trip hazard. Council
have again replaced an area of grass in front of the surf club building. This wears badly and in conjunc on
with Surf Sports we are looking at some different op ons for members to to wash down cra and take
some pressure off this area.
Members Change Rooms. The closing of the members change rooms provided an opportunity for
maintenance and through some very generous offers of me and exper se from club members both the
ladies and men’s change areas are having some much needed maintenance completed.
The roller doors have been replaced on the IRB Shed and ongoing maintenance con nues on smaller
issues around the Club.
Thanks to Sco Cooke as Building Officer who has provided me, guidance and exper se with building
issues around the Club.

11 Southport Surf Life Saving Annual Report 2019‐2020
A significance of our Annual Report is that it is not only for the current
members, but it also forms the basis of the historical record, enabling
future members to look back at the history of the club.
With this in mind, the situa on we find ourselves in is unique in the
club’s history.
Currently, over 6 million people, half of Australia’s workforce, are on
government support. Tourists, the lifeblood of the Gold Coast, banned
from travelling and our Supporters Club is returning from reduced
opera ons. In this environment financial planning is complex..
On the posi ve side though, we see restric ons star ng to ease and we hope to be fully func oning as a
club again in August. Also posi ve is the financial posi on we are in at this point.
The club was travelling well at the point of the closedown, well ahead of the budget targets with sufficient
cash on hand and no bank debt.
As we rely on the supporter’s club for 70% of our income, it was essen al that the two clubs come to an
agreement on rental payments, to secure the interests of both clubs. This resulted in an agreement of
50% rental payment from the supporter’s club, a figure that is able to be managed by both clubs for an
extended period.
Both clubs also went through the shutdown process reducing ac vi es and pu ng areas of the club into
hiberna on in line with government restric ons.
While we don’t yet know what the Post‐COVID period will bring, we know there will be challenges. The
management of both clubs will work together to ensure the best possible outcome, so that we can
con nue to support our members, our employees and most importantly carry out our role keeping
beachgoers safe.
2019/20 Financials
1. Surplus/Deficit
The club recorded a net Surplus before deprecia on of $176817 for the year.
Subtrac ng deprecia on of $351,195 leaves us a Net deficit of ($174,738)
While this is a good result, $135,891 ahead of budget and some $82,576 be er than last year, we should
keep in mind the age of our buildings and need to con nue to maintain and improve those assets.
Treasurers Report
12 Southport Surf Life Saving Annual Report 2019‐2020
2. Net results by area
Notes (a) Grants were higher than budgeted. April’s wages offset by Job keeper allowance.
(b) Strong membership numbers in Nippers and good work from the Nippers Commi ee
con nues to provide a great base for the future of the club financially.
(c) All areas of the club were diligent in reducing costs and mee ng budgets.
3. Summary of Cashflow
Net Cash in bank: $548,729 an increase of $118,725 on last year.
No Borrowings
Budget projec ons for 2020/2021 Financial Year
In a year when even the federal government delayed its budget because of the impact of COVID ‐19
we also will have difficulty making accurate forecasts.
In order to overcome this, we have presented members with a forecast budget with best es mates as
we see them at this me. We then will undertake two reviews of the forecast as we progress through
the year and adjust forecast as events unfold.
These reviews are projected to be August and November allowing us to gauge effects of expected
return to normal ac vi es and also effects of decreasing government subsidies med for the end of
September which will impact October onwards.
In line with our reviews of the forecast budgets, if the management commi ee sees the need to make
changes to the budget these will be presented to the members at a general mee ng for
considera on.

14 Southport Surf Life Saving Annual Report 2019‐2020
My first year as Supporters Club President has been an enriching experience and has opened my eyes to the machina ons of a business and the important mesh between two clubs as they work together to provide our community with a safe environment coupled with a wonderful dining experience. My thanks go to my fellow commi ee members who provide great support but, more importantly, informa ve, and robust discussion that focuses on moving the Supporters Club into the future. A special thanks to Julia Allison, my vice president, who is standing down this year – Julia has been the backbone of the commi ee and has provided great input and direc on into environmental, strategic
and employment planning. “Support of the lifesaving club is our key focus” ‐ this has always been the commi ee’s strategy and focus and remains so. 2019–2020 has been a great year for the Club and we con nue to provide that essen al support to the Surf Lifesaving Club in their essen al role as guardians of our beach. Our key management staff con nue to provide a facility that is highly regarded on the Gold Coast as a top‐class club experience. A recent anonymous Clubs Queensland review of our venue for the Keno and Clubs QLD Excellence Awards 2020 ended with the following comment, along with a 4 out of 4 ra ng when asked if the reviewer would recommend the Club and/or return: “I would revisit it (the Club) and recommend others to visit this venue. The atmosphere is very enjoyable, and the majority of the food was excellent. I felt that the meals were reasonably priced and the quality, on the whole, was good. The views are pleasant, and the furnishings encourage the relaxed beach feel. I enjoyed my visit and others would feel the same” Reviews like this show that General Manager Mar n Scanlan and his team are ge ng it right, providing a quality restaurant and café, and the result of that is solid support for our Surf Club and its members. Unfortunately, along with the rest of the world, we have had to deal with COVID 19. Our Club facili es have been reduced for some me, but Mar n and the team ba led on with the Pavilion remaining open and providing a great source of take away for members and locals. Thanks to a spirited social media promo on and members helping distribu ng flyers, the Pav has done quite well, considering its inability to allow patrons to sit down. Our intent was to keep a footprint in the area for members and others and we have achieved that where others could not. First and foremost in our mind at the me of closing the Club was our staff. Management has remained in constant contact with them, providing advice and support, ensuring all those that could received the Job Keeper allowance. Needless to say, most staff will be returning to work when the Club reopens. The closure allowed the management team me to review and assess our equipment and fix up where things needed fixing. Crucial to reopening was to ensure a safe workplace and dining environment.
Supporters Club Report
15 Southport Surf Life Saving Annual Report 2019‐2020
During 2019‐2020, the Club has:
Purchased updated poker machines Con nued improving and upda ng facili es, such as the Pavilion wooden floors, furniture etc. New beer lines in the club bar along with an ‐slip floors New commercial dishwasher upstairs Con nua on of the development of a new strategic plan
Financially, we remain in a great posi on. Of course, the coming set of financials for 2020‐2021 will be nega vely affected, brought about by COVID 19. Our solid financial posi on at the start of 2020 meant that we were able to weather the pandemic storm, retain most of our staff and reopen on 27 June. Our treasurer’s report outlines the posi on as at the end of our financial repor ng year – that is, 30 April 2020. However, our planning for 2020‐21 will necessarily consider the loss suffered during the pandemic and the need for restraint and careful planning. We are not alone in this respect. Gaming machines con nue to be a big source of income. Our plan is to include a program of con nual renewal of machines to ensure we have the latest on the market, that provide the best financial benefit to the Club. From an income perspec ve we are fortunate to have a license allowing us to operate up to 45 gaming machines. We have had an increase in a rac ng func ons to our facili es – weddings, 21st’s, company mee ngs – it is a great source of income, but the capacity exists to increase this poten al. So, management aims to promote the Clubs func ons capacity and in par cular, encourage members to book – we see nothing more sa sfying than members and their children holding memorable events at the Club. The Spit Master Plan con nues to be considered with our plans. Significant roadworks outside the Club have meant improved footpaths to the front of the Pavilion. It is hoped that as that Plan develops, people discover and u lise the Surf Club as venue on the doorstep of what promises to be a significant project. We have challenges for 2020‐2021 but no doubt with a commi ed management team and staff along with a great working rela onship with the Surf Club commi ee, we will meet these challenges and con nue to grow.

Supporters Treasurer Report
A comprehensive profit & loss report and balance sheet is within this annual report and will be available for members for adop on at the Annual General Mee ng.
On the most part, for our financial year ended 30 April 2020, it was business as usual. However, 2020 will be long remembered for COVD‐19 and the dras c measures our club, our state and our country implemented in order to avoid a na onal disaster. The impact to the financial statements of the measures implemented due to COVID‐19, was predominantly seen over the months of March and April for the year under review, where a significantly reduced opera on of ac vi es was undertaken.
However, despite this reduc on, the Club s ll produced a good set of results. The prudent manner in which the Club has been managed, along with Management and the Commi ee’s strict adherence to Corporate Governance principals has seen the preserva on of profits and a s ll healthy looking Balance Sheet, which are key drivers to the sustainability and longevity of our Club.
Revenue for 2020 was down approximately 10.7% compared to the same me last year. This is in line with the complete loss of 2 months trading due to COVID‐19. However a drop in expenses was also seen resul ng in an improvement of profit, year on year. For the year ended 30 April 2020, profit was $311k which compares favourably to 2019 profit of $272k.
Our cash posi on remains strong, although cash is down on 2019. Cash and cash equivalents for 2020 is $852k, compared with $1,046k at April 2019. At 30 April 2020 the current ra o is $1.83, meaning that our current assets cover our current liabili es by almost 2 to 1. This is an indica on of our ability to meet our short‐term liabili es and this is only achieved by a sound cash management strategy.
While at the me of wri ng this report, COVID‐19 restric ons are being eased for Queensland, the members of the Club can rest assured that the strategy towards the preserva on of the Club’s strong financial standing is at the forefront of Management and the Commi ee’s agenda. We look to 2021 as an opportunity to regroup and realign our financial goals.

17 Southport Surf Life Saving Annual Report 2019‐2020
Member numbers at Southport Surf Club have been stable this year
compared to last. We have had significant growth in Cadet numbers,
with a 50% increase this year compared to last. This reflects the ever‐
increasing number of juniors doing their Surf Rescue Cer ficates &
Bronze Medallions recently. Most of us at the beach would have
no ced the increasing number of younger members eagerly a ending
Patrols. This will be fantas c for helping with growth of ac ve
members in the coming years.
In January, this year Southport’s members were called upon to be
involved in the Clubs SWOT analysis to determine ways of improving
every area of the club and its support to the community. We had a great turnout in mee ng and online.
Many great ideas were put forth, our President and his team will have a big job ahead making working
plans to achieve some great results.
Sue Macdonald (OAM, Life Member) our Member Liaison Officer again this year has been extraordinarily
ac ve in local community support for our club. In November, Sue visited Southport Guides with Brianna
and Maeka Free. They were wonderful helpers and assisted with the delivery of a Surf Awareness and Sun
Safety program. A big thank you to Martha Stumer who addressed our Nippers and cleaned our precinct
on our “Clean Up Australia”
Sue also provided to a local community group a tour of our club on two separate occasions. Before they
enjoyed lunch at our Supporters Club lunch there was an inspec on of Nippers, our Lifesaving equipment,
the IRB shed and Surf Sports sec on. Many of the visitors had previously been in surf lifesaving and their
visit recalled wonderful memories.
Unfortunately, the Australian Cancer Council’s “Biggest Morning Tea” fundraiser to be held at Labrador
on the 21st May was cancelled. As guest speaker Sue’s talk included Sun Safety and Youth Pathways in
Surf Lifesaving and will be rescheduled for 2021.
Kim Free our Youth Development Officer has provided great ac vi es for our Southport Youth who have
par cipated in Youth Excellence & Development Camps and SCB YIP’s program.
Another great night was had by junior members at Movie World’s Fright night arranged by Kim and James Harwood, our Cadet Officer. A camp at the Point Lookout SLSC was arranged however had to be put off. Also, unfortunately the Annual Youth Ball has had to be cancelled. This season Kim was instrumental in developing and training of our young members in the Champion Life Saver, SCB Patrol, First Aid Rescue & Resuscita on compe on and March past compe on with some great results, achieving Branch level medals in all. Our sincere thanks to the Gold Coast Private Hospital for their con nued support and fantas c sponsorship of our Youth Development Program.
Membership Officer Report
18 Southport Surf Life Saving Annual Report 2019‐2020
Our “Life a er Nippers” booklet has been forwarded to our U14’s and our SSLSC Pathways Poster is assis ng Youth and all members with their direc on in Surf Life Saving. Thank you, Richard and all trainers/assessors/facilitators, for your encouragement and support of all members a ending skills maintenance, Bronze Course training and during the school holiday SRC/BM course in September 2019. Patrol Inspec ons by current Life Members proceeded as part of the Professional Development and Succession Program. Unfortunately, Patrol Inspec ons by Ac ve Life Members were cancelled in March and will return next season. The Membership Commi ee is designed to ensure con nued membership reten on and growth. If any members have ideas to improve membership or any member related are of the club please reach out to any of us on the Membership Commi ee. We con nue to have a very strong membership community at Southport Surf Club. Not only in member numbers but the willingness and depth of commitment our members provide. Thank you to all of you who have put in effort everywhere behind the scenes to make the club a be er place. Thank you to Sue Macdonald OAM, Julia Allison, James Harwood and Shane Roberts who par cipated in the Awards sub‐commi ee. The number of nomina ons received from our members this year was quite low which was to be expected. Thank you to our members who did submit a nomina on. Thank you also to Brooke, Emma and Amanda for your wonderful assistance. Congratula ons and thank you to the following members for your outstanding contribu on to our Club, Surf Life Saving and our Community during the 2019‐20 Season.

It is with great pride that I would like to take this opportunity to thank all patrolling members for their vigilance and service in keeping Main Beach safe for the beach going public for season 2019/20. With this being my first year in the role of Club Captain, I am thankful for the support and hard work by the members of the Lifesaving and Management Commi ees. My thanks and gra tude extend to the Patrol Captains and Vice Patrol Captains whose commitment in ensuring the delivery of the highest quality of service during patrols has allowed the Club to maintain Surf Life Saving Australia’s vision of ‘zero preventable deaths in Australian waters’. Special men on to all patrolling members for maintaining flexibility and a willingness to
adapt during the final stages of the season when the COVID ‐19 restric ons were ini ated. Even with the COVID‐19 restric ons in place 232 ac ve members logged 9562.67 patrol hours across 148 individual patrols. This season across all 14 Patrols teams averaged 19.64 members, with the average of 9.4 Bronze Medallion members per patrol. A further 24 members where granted roving patrol status. SSLSC members completed 15145 preventa ve ac ons for the 79246 visitors to Main Beach. Club members performed 40 rescues throughout the season, of par cular note where the efforts of Patrol 5 (3/11/2019) and Carol Templeton’s individual rescue (19/2/2020). Both rescues occurred outside of SSLSC’s patrol hours and each rescue was nominated to SLSQ as candidates for ‘Rescue of the Month’ award. Patrol Members responded to 277 first aid incidents for the season, these incidents required the treatment for

Sue Macdonald has once again shown considerable commitment to her role as First Aid Officer. Sue’s weekly inspec on ensures the First Aid Room is clean and dy, checking serviceability of all Emergency Care equipment and First Aid supplies are restocked. Both Sue and I congratulate Patrol 14 for their efforts in winning the GCPH Emergency Care Award for season 19/20. The Club wishes to thank the Gold Coast Private Hospital and their Emergency Department for their con nued support and wonderful dona on of First Aid supplies and use of blankets. Our thanks also to ‘Chempro Pharmacy’ at Arundel Plaza for supplying discounted Asmol Inhalers and Spacers. The con nued hard work and dedica on by Dale McVeigh (Mechanical Officer) has once again ensured

that the Club’s equipment and vehicles where fully opera onal throughout the season. The SSV has only now completed two seasons but is showing signs of severe deteriora on. The Club proposes to replace the SSV this season if grant funding becomes available, however it is likely that the vehicle will be in service for another season with a major overhaul proposed. Modifica ons to the patrol trailer has greatly improved the unit’s ease of use. The development of the lightweight sign trailer has further improved the speed and efficiency of patrol ‘set up’ and ‘pack down’. Both the tractor and the Toyota Prado require only annual servicing and minor modifica on work and will con nue to be highly valued assets to the Club. The IRBs have been maintained methodically with no issues to report during their performances on patrol. The Club has been successful in obtaining a grant for the purchase of a new IRB and motor, the boat is expected to be delivered in October 2020. To create space for this new IRB, the Club reduced the IRB fleet by selling one complete boat and re ring three motors. The three motors were gi ed to TAFE Qld (Coomera) for the training of appren ces in the marine industry. The Club’s vehicles and equipment are u lised in the harshest of condi ons and in order to maximise their opera onal lifespan it is impera ve that members con nue to show diligence in caring for our club assets. I thank members for their con nued efforts in caring for the equipment throughout the season and request members to no fy their Patrol Captain or myself if they have any concerns or the repor ng of faults. Overall my personal highlights for the 19/20 season have firstly been the honour I have experienced in represen ng the Club whose members have displayed selfless volunteer efforts to keep the beach safe. Secondly, joining a group of youth members welcoming Annastacia Palaszczuk (Queensland Premier) to our Club in December to launch SLSQ ‘Summer Surf Safety’. Thirdly, gaining approval from City of Gold Coast Lifeguard Service to access Lifeguard Tower 40 has undoubtedly improved the surveillance capacity of patrols. Finally, the deployment of the new sign trailer has led to improvements in enabling patrols to be ‘set up’ and ‘packed down’ with greater efficiency and safety. In conjunc on with my regular du es of Club Captain, this coming season I will con nue to work closely with Chief Training Officer regarding targe ng training of members on patrols to bolster the opera onal capacity across all patrol teams. I propose to review the By‐Laws, firstly as they relate to the Club’s patrol obliga on to include more roles within the club that can account for patrol hours and secondly review the Patrol Rewards Program to make it clearer and simpler to calculate. In closing I would like to thank Rod Goodall (Vice Club Captain) for his efforts during the week of the season to ensure that all equipment is opera onally ready for the coming weekend, I truly appreciate your efforts and support. I also would like to take this opportunity to thank the work of the office staff, in par cular Brooke as she has provided me with valuable support throughout the season. To all patrolling members I wish you the very best during the break and will welcome you back for the return of season 20/21 later this year.

30 Southport Surf Life Saving Annual Report 2019‐2020
The delivery of new Awards and Skills Maintenance sessions cannot be achieved without a mul tude of Club members pitching in to support including trainers, assessors, water safety, nipper educa on and general helpers. Ten years ago, I started keeping a record of this commitment and although 2011/12 records are a li le sketchy, over 164 Club members have commi ed over 18,353 hours. During this season, 54 Club members have assisted with Educa on, with 2,332.5 hours commi ed, which is a massive achievement considering the season was seriously disrupted in March due to the Coronavirus Pandemic, with a number of courses suspended or cancelled. It should also be noted, the me commi ed does not
include me trainers and assessors have spent achieving their trainers and assessor awards, and keeping these current, through Branch run trainer proficiencies. As in previous years, I trust the membership will join me and express the apprecia on of the Educa on Team for their commitment, dedica on and quality of service provided to our members year a er year. Bronze Courses have been interes ng this season, with a number of changes during the season, including Neill Dudley stepping down as the Senior Training Officer ‐ Bronze. I would like to personally thank Neill, as I am sure all members will and express my appreciate with the quality of his training, his professionalism, knowledge and humour he introduces to sessions. Although Neill is not lost to Educa on, he handed the reins over to Rod Goodall, who has always been that solid leader, providing strong support when some difficult decisions had to be made, his dedica on to Board & WHS Training and for fixing all the Educa on Boards, as these o en become damaged during the early weeks as new recruits begin their training in the Southport surf. During the season, the Club ran three combined Bronze and Surf Rescue Cer ficate (SRC) courses, with 26 new Bronze members and 36 new SRC members adding to our healthy patrolling numbers. It should also be noted that one of these courses was part of a na onal trial for a new Bronze/SRC Course. Southport was one of only two Queensland Clubs asked to par cipate in this trial, which demonstrates how highly Southport Educa on is viewed within the Branch and State Centre. Sue Macdonald OAM, Senior Training Officer – Emergency Care has once again been busy with Emergency Care training and is encouraged by the large number of members who are showing a greater interest in these important skills. First Aid and Advanced Resuscita on is not only required on Patrol, at Nippers or at Carnivals they are important life skills for the home, workplace, our wider community and have also given many members the opportunity for employment and Ter ary Educa on placement. There have been many important Emergency Care incidences performed by our members at our club and at home this season. This is why our training is so important, knowing we all can make a difference in an emergency. Over the first half of this season Sue conducted three First Aid courses and one Advanced Resuscita on course at our club, with 43 members all deemed competent and will be a wonderful asset on their patrol. The delivery of advanced resuscita on will take a greater emphasis over the coming seasons, as oxygen delivery is being removed from the new Bronze/SRC courses. A further eight Club members a ended Branch run courses to achieve their Emergency Care Awards.

31 Southport Surf Life Saving Annual Report 2019‐2020
Sue also assists with Emergency Care training with the Bronze/SRC courses, training of new Bronze and SRC recruits on a Wednesday night is always a good introduc on to First Aid. Sue also helps every season with the September school holiday Bronze/SRC course and enjoys the opportunity to assist with beach skills, First Aid, CPR training and assessment of our U14’s. This course is a clear indica on of the high Nipper membership and member reten on with ever increasing number of par cipants on this course, which is looking somewhat daun ng for trainers and assessors based on current Nipper membership numbers. During Skills Maintenance, Sue covered pa ent assessment, incident repor ng, asthma, anaphylaxis, arterial bleeding, tourniquets and the new snakebite pressure bandages during the Skills Maintenance sessions and worked with Neill Dudley providing the skill updates in Advanced Resuscita on. On top of Sue’s other commitments, Sue takes great pleasure having fun on Sunday mornings with the U9’s to U13’s teaching Surf Safety, Surf Awareness, Signals, CPR and Basic First Aid. With the introduc on of “Bob the manikin” to the U10’s, Sue is always amazed by their interest and reten on of anatomy and physiology at such a young age. Sue thanks all Age Managers who assisted her and the amazing amount of me Jo Feltham (Nipper Educa on Officer) has spent processing all Age Awards. The IRB’s have also had a busy season, with Paul Phillips, Senior Training Officer – IRB running two combined IRB Driver and IRB Crew courses, and Dale McVeigh also assis ng with a Mermaid Course, with the Mermaid Club hos ng nine Southport members giving us a total of 3 and 16 members gaining their Driver and Crew Awards respec ully. As with last season, Paul is encouraged by the younger members obtaining their IRB Awards, with the exclusion of two members over 40, the average age for the rest was 19. 2020 will also be a season of change with Paul confirming he will be stepping down as the Senior Training Officer – IRB and will focus his me on the IRB Captain role and running the IRB Racing Team, a passion he has held for a number of season. Paul has worked relessly in expanding the interest and passion for IRB’s and has provided five years in the role and it is somewhat sad to see him step aside. I trust members will take their me to thank Paul for his service, and it is to his credit that four eligible IRB Trainers have all expressed an interest in stepping into the role. It will be an interes ng decision at the AGM. During the season, Southport held five Skills Maintenance days with 556 Awards assessed. These days were blessed with perfect weather and calm waters allowing for measured distances for the run‐swim‐runs and members will reflect on the opportunity to truly appreciate their level of fitness to undertake this component with a number realising their fitness was not where it needed to be. Members need to be reminded that without the need to undertake an annual med pool swim each year, if they do not get into the pool on a regular basis, their swimming ability will deteriorate rapidly. One change introduced during the season was the opportunity for those members whose swimming ability falls short of the Bronze requirement, then members can now be assessed against the SRC standard and con nue to provide patrols as an SRC Award member. This allows for some con nuity of service, and the me to pick up the swimming skills and re‐ac vate their Bronze Award. It is acknowledged that the role of Community Educa on Officer, held by Julien Grignon has remained dormant this season, although there may be an opportunity during 2020/21 to develop this role and seek to provide some external training within the Community.
32 Southport Surf Life Saving Annual Report 2019‐2020
Finally, I would like to offer my personal apprecia on to the support provided by the Club Trainers and Assessors, too many to men on individually, however, I would like to men on Brianna Free and Spiro Livanes for stepping up and obtaining their Training Officer Award and will seek to become Bronze Trainers during 2020/21. It should also be noted that Shane Roberts, on top of his other significant du es within the Club, also stepped up to the role of Bronze Assessor and was also approved as a Bronze Facilitator. We also have another five members wai ng in the wings for a suitable Branch Training Officers course to become Bronze and IRB Trainers. There is also further poten al for the Club to be involved with the development of a Tri‐party Training Agreement, between the Club, South Coast Branch and SLSQ. If this agreement develops as currently proposed, the Club may be able to develop a new pathway for developing Emergency Care Trainers and Assessors. The Educa on service is very well supported by the Club Management and the Administra ve staff. I would like to take this opportunity to thank them for this support and long may it con nue. Many thanks, good luck and best wishes for 2020/21

39 Southport Surf Life Saving Annual Report 2019‐2020
The Southport SLSC strategy of developing our Surf Sports program internally con nued this past year, with real growth being realised both in numbers at training across the club as well as results gained by our SSLSC compe tors at carnivals. A tangible example of this is the numbers at board training on Thursday a ernoons with the combina on of junior, cadet, seniors, masters and general member training providing a kaleidoscope of colour, energy and ac vity in front of the club house and on Main Beach. It is a huge credit to all involved to make this possible, from the Coaching Team‐ Pierce, Shane, Jake and Russall through to all the parents and general members offering Water Safety support. A truly
club wide combined effort crea ng a safe, fun and construc ve training experience for all members. Huge thank you and congratula ons to all involved! Par cipa on numbers are also up from the pool training sessions, the general member ski training sessions, the Iron sessions on Saturday mornings in front of the club and extends to our very ac ve IRB racing team and their hugely enthusias c, energe c training sessions. Although the season was cut short with the tragic intrusion of Covid‐19 into society, Surf Sports went online to keep our community connected, as well as provide fun and effec ve training for our members. Congratula ons to Emma, Pierce and Shane for pulling this off so successfully, I have no doubt we as a club will con nue to benefit from this uptake of technological delivery of services moving forward. Results highlights for the year include: Jazmin Lewsam being selected to compete in the Kellogg’s Nutrigrain Iron Series at the Coolanga a
Gold, which was an official leg of the Nutri‐Grain Iron Women Series. A Gold medal for our Coolanga a Gold Mixed Open Long Course team‐ Corey Geoghegan, Erin
Trinca and Isabella Woelfle‐Davies. A Silver medal for our Coolanga a Gold Open Men’s Long Course team‐ Sam Fuller, Harrison Jones,
David Mainwaring and David Morgan. Fourteen of our junior members taking on the challenge and compe ng in the Youth Coolanga a
Gold compe on, many for the first me. Brodee Trinca being selected for the Super Surf Teams League and finishing 2nd overall in the Open
Female Board across the three rounds of the Summer of Surf series, while s ll only an Under 19 compe tor.
Eliza Bethe, Ethan Wentworth, Morgan Trinca and Isabella Woelfle‐Davies being selected for the South Coast InterBranch team.
Ethan Wentworth and Brodee Trinca being selected for the Queensland Cyclones State Team which raced at Alexandra Headlands.

40 Southport Surf Life Saving Annual Report 2019‐2020
Our Pool Rescue team competed at both the Queensland and Australian Championships at the Gold Coast Aqua c Centre. A total of 19 members competed at the Australian Championships, David Morgan taking home 1 gold and 1 bronze, Morgan Trinca and Jordan Billing taking home gold and Mikayla Messer taking home a bronze. 45 Southport Surf Life Saving Annual Report 2019‐2020
Southport SLSC Nippers – We teach children surf safety and lifesaving skills, in a fun and safe environment, so that they may progress to be patrolling members, and be capable of saving their own life, or that of someone else.
A er dusk on the evening of March 23 last year, a former Nipper (Josh Shannon), along with 2 of our the Under 14 parents (Glenn Mackenzie and Jason Free) responded to calls for help from the beach, while on their way to the nipper gradua on dinner. A family of 3, including a ten‐year‐old girl, were caught in a rip, and were heading out to sea and out of sight in the failing light. Without hesita on, our members drew
upon their training and skills to respond swi ly, and eventually to bring the family safely to shore ‐ aver ng a certain tragedy.
One of key successes this year was the prepara on of our U14 nippers for the transi on to the senior club as cadets. With thanks to Richard Morgan (Chief Training officer) and the educa on team we again exceeded previous records in seeing 30 Under 14 qualify for their Surf Rescue Cer ficate. Six of this cohort succeeded in a aining this award with less than 2 years nipper experience. It is the prepara on for and a ainment of this award that helps build confidence and ability to perform rescues such as the one men oned above.
Engagement
Building upon the success of last season, our numbers remain at the high levels of a decade ago with 421 registered nippers at the end of the season. Matching last year this places our club as the second largest in the South Coast branch. Our reten on of nippers moving into the senior club is also the highest in the branch at 60%. Many factors contribute to this partly due to higher integra on of training sessions with the senior club, the work of the special cadet officer and higher par cipa on of SRCs in patrols.
With the high level of Nipper numbers comes a commensurate need for more assistance with delivering the program. Each Sunday requires the assistance of around 90 people to ensure our Program runs smoothly, safely, and delivers the best possible outcomes for our Nippers.

In addi on, we also rely upon the assistance of Lifesaving Patrol and Office Admin staff.
Development
Age managers are our front‐line force in running nippers, they manage the ac vi es, keep nipper interest and know their charges so our support services such as water safety can be be er deployed. This year we focused on ensuring all Age Managers were cer fied, a process requiring online learning, a recognised surf lifesaving award and an assessment of skill deployment. Mentors assist the new age manager in reviewing their efforts and confirm their assessment. We are pleased to see that all 31 age managers have completed their online qualifica on with only 2 to complete their mentoring task.
The need for age managers, officials and water safety are constant. We encourage all parents to get involved and now train age managers to recruit help for small tasks such as coun ng returning swimmers or star ng nipper races or marshalling nippers for the next event. Each small step is cri cal to building par cipa on and support, so nippers con nues to run when carnivals deplete our support staff.
Our preseason ac vi es included the age manager workshop and the orienta on day for parents and nippers new to the club. Input and assistance from the senior club (Educa on, Surf Sports, Patrols and Commi ee) as well experienced age managers to both events were key to both events were a success.
Our Junior Ac vi es Club audit by South coast Branch occurred in February. We received a very posi ve report, with men on for how well our program was organised, including a new change to shorten the program for the U6 to U8 and the impressive number of Water Safety personnel.
With good condi ons throughout most of the season we only had two cancella ons due to poor weather, rough surf and lack of beach. A significant improvement on the previous season. Congratula ons to our new water safety officer who managed to assess over 80% of the nipper members for preliminary and compe on proficiency swims within the first month of nipper Sundays. It is a significant benefit to all nippers to be able to swim unaided in the surf, these assessments give us a measure of how the nipper is progressing and their confidence and allow us to appropriately allocate water safety personnel.
The challenges of scheduling educa on, beach and water nipper ac vi es on a nipper fun day were handled successfully by our new Educa on officer. Educa on in surf safety and life skills is an essen al part of nipper development. This program covers Sun safety, Signals, Wave types, Rips & Sweeps, basic First Aid and Resuscita on. Sue (Awards officer) is “always amazed at the interest nippers show (especially in “Bob” the manikin), their ability to retain informa on, perform CPR and First Aid all to a high standard”. Thanks to the effort and diligence of our Age Managers, Educa on and Awards Officers, and the broader Educa on Team we reached our goal of 90% (349) of all Junior members achieving their Age Awards this season.

47 Southport Surf Life Saving Annual Report 2019‐2020
Thanks to the Surf Sports Coaches, this year saw a greater level of par cipa on in training sessions – par cularly the a ernoon Development squads. Integrated [with senior member] training sessions have provided increased opportuni es for Junior members to develop their skills and mo va on, and the emergence of a “One Club” mentality has seen improved compe ve success across the whole Club this season, from Pool Rescue, to Surf Rescue Championships, to Branch, State and Australian Championships.
Leading up to state championship (cancelled due to COVID‐19 restric ons) saw good par cipa on in all age groups from Under 8 through to Under 14. Southport placed 5th in Branch Junior Championships an improvement of one place over last year.
Congratula ons to Eliza Bethe and Ethan Wentworth who represented South Coast Branch at State Inter‐Branch Titles, with Ethan going on to represent Queensland for the Interstate Championships.
Strategy
In responding to parent feedback, we have streamlined the Nipper Funday program. We now operate U6, U7 and U8 on three 30‐minute rota ons whilst retaining 45min rota ons for the remaining age groups. Responses from parents and age managers have been very posi ve to this ac on and this will be carried into the next season.
This year we have been fortunate to enlist the help of an IRB driver and crew to help on most nipper weekends. This has helped to increase overall safety, as well as provide a speedier water area setup. Our water safety officer adds his thanks to those who donated their me to enable par cipa on in water ac vi es in a wide range of condi ons over the 18 nipper days we have this season, plus a thanks to Alex Modlich as backup water safety officer.
There will again be a conscious focus on increasing Family Par cipa on via a day to day small jobs recruitment by age managers. We will also be working on how best to engage the new Junior Ac vi es Club captains in the nipper program.
Off‐season working bees have focussed on improving facili es and equipment, and we have begun a systema c upgrade program for Club nipper boards.
Service
This season we again hosted the Albatross Nipper program in March, and the a endance and enjoyment by both Albatross kids and our own Nippers was fantas c. It is not o en that you see genuine delight in both the Albatross kids and their volunteer water safety, for me this was remarkable to see our U14s relaxed but focused commi ed to their water task. We will con nue to work with the Albatross organisa on again next season.
48 Southport Surf Life Saving Annual Report 2019‐2020
Junior members and family also represented our Club in recognising and paying respect to others who have served, as part of local ANZAC Day commemora ons this year.
Apprecia on
In my first year as, Junior Ac vi es Chair I would like to thank all who helped to make this a working opera on. I have relied heavily on the Junior Ac vity Commi ee who have expanded their roles to share the workload and the Office support staff (Emma, Brooke and Amanda) who are excep onal in dealing with my requests. Nippers cannot func on without their support , facili es, and resources of the greater Club family, the Club Management Commi ee, the club and Lifesaving Patrol Captains and the Educa on team.
Special thanks to club members who consistently and regularly contribute to the nipper effort despite not having nipper children. The individual contribu ons span many years, some taking annual leave to complete the tasks.

On behalf of the JAC, I would also like to thank the previous chair Tom Barret for the founda on work he laid for me to transi on into this role with minor sufferance.
Finally, for the volunteers, the parents and the nipper’s thanks for the season.
