LITERACY & EVANGELISM, GHANA
REPORT FOR JANUARY –DECEMBER 2019.
1.0 Preamble:
For we do not write you anything you cannot read or understand 1 Cor 1: 13. NIV
2.0 Introduction
By God’s grace we have come this far by faith, leaning on the Lord and trusting in His Holy Word. This
report covers activities undertaken during the YEAR 2019 (Jan to Dec).
3.0 Monthly Operational Activities/Achievements:
January 2019:
We started the year with our Management meeting on January 16 and followed it up with our Board
meeting on January 25. For the rest of the month we spent time to strategize for the year basing our
strategies on our approved Action plans for the year.
February 2019:
Bible Week: As a result of our on-going partnership with the Bible Society of Ghana, our Country
Director, Rev Samuel Lawerteh and the Programs Manager, Nat Nunoo, joined the Bible Society in
observing the Bible Week Celebrations to talk about the importance of the Bible and create Adult
Literacy awareness in churches in the Eastern and Greater Accra Regions in the first and second
weeks of February.
TTW: Two (2) Literacy and Evangelism, Ghana (LE Ghana) Managers, Rev Samuel Lawerteh and
Nat Nunoo also conducted a five-day literacy Teacher Training Workshop (TTW) for twenty (20)
people from the Church of Pentecost congregations under the Gomoa Kyirem District from February
18 - 22. Due to the fact that majority of the participants were professional teachers living in
communities of about ten kilometers radius from the venue, and the fact that transportation from the
communities could not be relied upon, LE Ghana agreed to the request of the church to hold the
training in the evenings, the first of its kind in our history. Report from the District Pastor, Pastor
Kpalam, indicates that the participants have started literacy classes in their respective communities
and monitoring is on-going. A refresher program is planned for next year 2020.

COP Engagement: The Church of Pentecost (COP)
approached LE Ghana to partner the church in their
literacy program. The National Chairman of the Church’s
Evangelism and Discipleship Committee Apostle
Gakpetor and his assistant Pastor Henry Ako-Nai met
with the management of LE Ghana to study our system
and to discuss the possibility of implementing this
partnership.
They had earlier on had similar meetings with the
Managements of the University of Ghana’s Institute of
Adult Education, the Non-Formal Division of the Ministry of Education and then Ghana Institute of
Linguistics, Literacy and Bible Translators (GILLBT formerly SIL). During the meeting with LE Ghana,
we demonstrated our method of teaching to the COP team. Series of correspondences took place
between us and the team leader. Finally, the COP came to a conclusion that LE Ghana is the best
among the lot to partner with. The COP officially communicated this to us.
March 2019:
Primer Construction: LE Ghana Programs Manager, Nat
Nunoo led a team of translators, staff and volunteers from
the Bible Society of Ghana and LE Ghana to construct
Bible content primers for teaching and learning of the
Bono language. The primer construction took place from
March 5 – 21, in Accra and was sponsored by the Bible
Society.
TTW: From March 18 – 22, Rev Lawerteh also led a team from LE Ghana to organize a five-day TTW
at Dodowa. This TTW had a three-prong approach, Dangme, Twi and Ga. Fourteen participants from
different churches took part in this TTW.

TTW Firm Foundation: From March 18-16, our
Resource Mobilization Manager and also the Team
leader for our English Literacy Program, Ms.
Helena Awuah-Amoako, led a team to organize an
English TTW (Firm Foundations) for 23 Care-givers
of Compassion International at Adoagyiri in the
Eastern Region of the country. The care-givers
have started training 300 children under their care.
April 2019:
Primer Construction: The Programs
Manager led a LE Ghana team from April 13
– 18 to complete the final draft of the
Mfantse Primer Book 2. Once again Prof.
Mrs. Irene Odotei gave us a hooping fifty
percent discount on the cost of our stay at
her center. She also gave the meals to us
ex-gratia. We had a surprise cum pleasant
visit from our Board Chairman, Mr. David
Hammond and his dear wife Paulina on third
day of the primer construction workshop.
The visit really rejuvenated us.
TTW Firm Foundation: Ms. Helena Awuah-Amoako, led a team to organize an English TTW (Firm
Foundations) at Ayikuma in the Shai Area from April 22-24. Compassion International, Ghana Office
sponsored the training. There were 13 participants. The trained teachers, all Care-givers of
Compassion International have started teaching 110 children under their care.
TTW COP Pilot Project: On April 29, the COP in partnership with LE Ghana started a five-day TTW
for 43 people from the Anyaa-Ablekuma Area as a pilot project for the whole country.
May 2018:
The TTW pilot project for the COP continued to May 3. The TtW was held for the prospective teachers
in four languages concurrently: English (Firm Foundations), Asante Twi, Ga and Ewe. There were 23
participants for Twi, 11 for English, 4 for Ga and 5 for Ewe in Total 43 teachers. Initially the COP
Anyaa-Ablekuma Area had 700 registered learners ready for the classes in designated learning
centers. However, in the course of the training, Apostle Gakpetor, Head of the Area announced that
his office had received about 4,000 requests from congregants wishing to start learning in COP Anya-
Ablekuma Area churches alone when they heard about the Pilot project. There is therefore a huge
potential for Literacy Ministry in COP.

On May 24th and 25th profiling of all the potential learners from the various assemblies of COP in the
Anyaa-Ablekuma Area was undertaken by LE Ghana staff and volunteers at the COP Ablekuma
Central Assembly and the Oduman Assembly, respectively between 6pm and 9pm. The literacy
program was duly commenced and classes started in all the 7 centers on May 27th.
June 2019:
Supervision (M&E): In the Month of June we
made 5 supervision trips to cover all the 7
COP learning centers. All the teething
problems were discussed with the Co-
ordinators and corrective measures are
ongoing. Classes are ongoing for
588.registered and profiled learners on
Mondays and Thursdays 6-8pm. Out of 43
teachers we trained 36 are actively teaching,
2 are Co-ordinators. We will continue with
Class Inspections for the next 6 months after
which COP hope to graduate this first batch of
pilot learners.
TTW: In the Months of May & June 2019, we piloted a new approach to TTWs due to constraints on
time. TTW at Sra Presbyterian Church started for Literacy teachers in the Church auditorium. The
trainees meet two times a week form 4-6pm each evening. This is because they are government
workers who only have time after 4pm. Eight (8) trainees have enrolled. Rev. Sam Lawerteh assisted
by Abraham Boduwa and Rev. Joyce Nunoo run the workshop. Training was completed in July,
however, teachers are yet to be assisted to profile their students and start classes. This is because
Rev Nunoo their Co-ordinator was nursing a sick husband who has since died. Next year this will be
followed up.
Sra Pilot TTW Class Inspection
Supervision: In the Months of May and June, Rev. S Lawerteh inspected ongoing classes at
Dodowa, Ada and Odumase. The current statistics is attached.

Success Story:
On Sunday June 2nd, three learners from the Mount Zion Literacy class, Dodowa read the three Bible
Lessons in Dangme at the communion service. They enrolled in the class being run by Richard
Dadebo and Agnes Yoweh. The students read fluently to the admiration of all. For the first time, the
congregants affirmed the gesture with a round of applause at the end of each lesson.

July 2019:
Supervision: Management and staff of LE-Ghana continued to monitor the 15 literacy classes in the
7 centers across the Church of Pentecost’s Ablekuma-Anyaa Area. The monitoring takes place on
Mondays and Thursdays each week.
September 2019:
On September 23, 2019, LE-Ghana conducted a refresher course for 22 teachers from the Church of
Pentecost literacy program. This refresher course has enhanced teaching and learning in the
program.
October 2019:
Monitoring of the literacy classes in all the sectors continued in October. We have also started
planning for an African Literacy Training Institute in September 2020. We are at the preliminary stage.
We have also started planning for the Ga primer construction in early 2020.

November 2019: On November 10,
2019, Rev. S.B. Lawerteh (Country
Director), Mrs. Ellen Adjetey-Sowah
(Director of Administration) and Nathaniel
Nunoo (Director of Programs) attended
the graduation of 13 learners from the
Presbyterian Church of Ghana, St.
Andrews Congregation, Aklomuase
literacy class. Three members of the
graduating team read the scriptures for
the service that day.
On November 17, 2019, four learners were graduated at Trinity Congregation of the Presbyterian
Church of Ghana, Big Ada, after they have successfully passed their final test. They were members
of the pilot program sponsored by Compassion International Care givers group which the Presbyterian
Church is hosting. The Country Director, Rev. Samuel Lawerteh led the ceremony and issued out
certificates. All the four graduates were not from the Presbyterian Church. The Country Director urged
non-readers in the congregation to get enrolled and learn to read the Bible for life in fullness.
Mount Zion Graduating Class, 08 Dec 2019
December: On the 8th day of December 2019, fourteen members of the literacy class at the Mount
Zion Congregation of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Dodowa graduated. The Programs Director,
Mr. Nathaniel Nunoo and the Director of Administration, Mrs. Ellen Adjetey-Sowah joined the Country
Director, Rev. Samuel Lawerteh to officiate. The graduates read the Dangme lessons for the day,
displaying their reading skills to the admiration of all. They were issued with graduation certificates.
The occasion was used to recruit new members for Dangme, Twi and English classes.

On the 22nd day of December, Four learners
were graduated at the Apostolic Church
Ghana chapel at Dodowa. The Area Head,
Apostle Seth Gakpetor was full of praise for the
way the LEI teaching pattern helped his people
to learn reading with relative ease. The L&E
GH leadership was there to issue out
certificates of merit. New members were
recruited to start new classes in Dangme and
English.

4.0 Fund Raising
Tools: In the first half of the year, we designed and printed Brochures and Donation forms, registered
a Mobile Money Platform to receive funds and took opportunity to print Asante Twi and English
Primers. This was to ensure that we had adequate materials to start Literacy Ministries when we start
major promotions in the churches.
Promotional Meetings: We did our first Promotional and Fundraising at Trinity United Church on
Sunday 23rd June 2019, where our sister Ellen Adjetey-Sowah worships. It was a good and
encouraging start. In the coming months, we plan to visit more churches. September 8, Literacy Day
this year falls on Sunday, we plan to use this day to do multiple promotions in various churches that
day. Outcome: We concentrated on Dangme Tongu District this year and raised GHS1,000 in the
month of September.
We followed up a number of our Patrons for funds; however that did not go too well, a number of them
were affected by economic downturns. We are cultivating and recruiting more patrons, partners and
Institutional donors.

5.0 Finance & Administration
Volunteers: We had to let go of Bernard Djabletey to allow him to complete his exams to graduate
and pursue other interests. We however recruited Emmanuella Kpeli to assist in the office on a full-
time basis, she came in really handy for the Mfantse Primer construction workshop and the COP TTW
after quick orientation. We will need to replace Bernard at some point, someone with IT skills and
loves the ministry. In addition, we need more part-time volunteers to supplement the work of the full –
timers. As projects and funds become available we will recruit.
Reporting and Assessment Forms: We have designed Reporting Forms for Teachers and Co-
ordinators to ensure we are regularly monitoring and collecting statistics. We also designed Standard
Class Inspection Forms to guide everyone. We also designed Assessment Forms to assess the
Teachers and Students. This was used during the Refresher Training for COP Program, to gauge
progress made. The outcome provided useful information and a good opportunity for the teachers to
examine what they have achieved so far. The exercise is ongoing.
Annual Filing:
We have now filed our records up to 2017 with Registrar Generals’ Department as required by law.
Filing of 2018, 2019 will be concluded in 2020 delayed by lack of funds and arrears due our auditor.
Partnerships:
Our partnerships with Bible Society, Bible League, Ghana Evangelism Committee, and Church of
Pentecost are progressing sturdily. We are working towards partnerships with more of the churches,
and Compassion International.
Planning & Evaluation Meetings:
Management met monthly and as needs arose; we held two Board Meetings and final Board Meeting
came off December 13, 2019. Planning Retreat took place on 27th Nov 2019. Our plans for 2020 were
reviewed and approved for implementation by the board.
Finances:
Its been a tough year financially for our patrons and this affected us negatively. However the COP
Program was a great opportunity and the Church’s donation provided some respite. We thank the
Lord. The Good news though is we are beginning to court the churches. What is needed now is to
concentrate our efforts for results.
Highlights of our finances are as follows:
Item 2019 (GHS) 2018 (GHS)
Income 71,211 149,866
Net Surplus/Deficit (82,054) 12,989
Current Assets 50,329 19,764
Current Liabilities 51,000 6,000
We took the risks to order for books to keep unit costs low in anticipation of the scaling up of the COP
Program. This resulted in debts we need to clear. COVID has affected the program, we are praying
that things will improve and we can get back on track and raise funds to clear these out standings and
get ministries running.

6.0 International Responsibilities and Capacity Building
6.1 Bereavement: On the sad passing of our colleague Bro. Rev. Dr. Bangura, LEI, was represented
in Sierra Leone on 24-26th January by Rev. S.B. Lawerteh.
With the sad passing of Rev. Titus Turaki, we are informed LEI, donated USD1,000 to the family. Rev.
Titus was a member of the Member Nation Board. The Ghana team is planning to raise funds to
assist his family on his 1st Anniversary Remembrance.
6.2 Capacity Building: From June 10 to 29, 2019, Nat Nunoo, our Programs Director, participated in
the International Literacy Training Institute in Tulsa Oklahoma (The Head Office of LEI), as a
facilitator.
6.3 New Partnerships & Fundraising –
The LE-Ghana Country Director, Rev. Samuel B. Lawerteh, visited Canada in August at the invitation
of LEI-Canada for a period of two weeks. Together with Rev. Mrs. Carey Jo Johnston, they visited a
number of Ghanaian churches in Canada to promote the literacy ministry of both Canada and Ghana.
Rev. S.B Lawerteh’s visit to Canada culminated in the signing of an MOU between LE, Canada & LE,
Ghana to collaborate in raising funds and rolling out literacy ministries in Canada and Ghana. Rev.
Carey Jo has followed up with Promotional Meetings and Rev. S.B Lawerteh followed up on promised
commitments by telephone and emails. Indications are that results should start to trickle in from Jan
2020.
6.4 Capacity Building &Training: Our Sister, Hellena Amoako Awuah planned to go to Kenya in
August 2019 to assist Pat Lindsay in the regional ILTI and also get trained in Fund raising to boost our
efforts in that area. She unfortunately had to cancel at the last minute due to an injury to her ankle and
on crutches.
We encouraged and enrolled our Volunteers Emmanuella Kpelli, Rosemary Sackey and Dorothy
Konadu to take online courses. We are grateful to LEI, USA for their scholarships.

7.0 Conclusion and Recommendations:
We achieved much of our Action Plan for 2019 on the technical operations side. The area we need to
back up on is fund raising. Our statistics are attached on what has been achieved so far.
8.0 Key Actions for year 2020:
1. Primers: There are two local primers Ga & Ewe that we urgently need to work on and complete.
We are seeking for funding of GHS50,700 (Phase 1). We also have Mfanste Primer Ready for
Print and we need 35,000GHS to print first 2000 copies to start Ministries pending.
2. Partnerships: We look to deepen our relationship with COP with first set of graduates of the Pilot
Project. Look into formalized partnerships with Compassion International, Bible Society and
create new ones with other churches and organizations locally and internationally.
3. Capacity Building: We have a Volunteer mentoring program in place to sustain the organization as
we grow. As a result we are carefully recruiting and recommending volunteers to attend ILTIs and
online courses to be trained. Others will also be trained at the next Regional ALTI.
4. Preparations are underway for Regional Training Institute planned for Sept/Oct 2020 or 2021 to
train more Co-ordinators depending on how many will show interest. This is to fill the need to ramp
up Supervision, Monitoring and Evaluation in support to the churches as well as train more Trainer
of Trainers.
5. Member Nation collaborations: We are committed to collaborating with other member nations, and
so we are preparing to assist in primer construction and TTW in Nigeria and Liberia including our
collaboration with LE, Canada.
6. Fund raising to motivate and assist our teachers, Fundraising for our Volunteers, Projects and
office upkeep.
7. Community Outreach Projects - Start to develop literacy projects/programs that reach out to our
communities, and evangelize. A CONCEPT PAPER was brainstormed at our Retreat and will be
fine-tuned for piloting.
8. Engage on Member Nations decisions and activities.
Pag

For Praise & Prayer:
1. Thank God for the TTWs and Primer constructions organized so far.
2. We thank God for the Success stories of new learners at the various learning centers.

4. Thank God for the new partnership between LE Ghana and the COP and the churches we have started with. Pray that these partnerships will continue for a long time. Pray that the documentary on the literacy program to be aired on Pent TV, will produce the desired results and the first Graduates of the Pilot Project will be a shining example to motivate others to read and write and follow the Lord.
5. Thank God for the Management, staff and volunteers of LE Ghana and pray for our health, businesses and families to thrive.
6. Pray for good responses from the churches as LE Ghana knocks on their doors for funds and partnerships.
