SOLIDARITY FOR DEVELOPING COMMUNITIES (SFDC) ANNUAL REPORT FOR THE YEAR – 2019-2020

Introduction: For last 27 years Solidarity For Developing Communities (SFDC) have been working more intensively in the remote and mountainous districts i.e. Kandhamal, Gajapati, Ganjam and Rayagada of Southern Odisha for the holistic development of the underprivileged, poor, marginalized and deprived Adivasi, Dalit and OBC communities. The main focus is to strengthen the socio-economic condition of these communities by providing them quality education starting from pre-school to higher professional education level and further leading them to flare out successfully as professionals to contribute towards their families and communities as Human Harmonisers and actualizing the Vision and Mission of the organization. During the past years the organizations has dealt with much difficult situations and have overcome it by developing new strategic plans and strong monitoring process. Despite these difficulties, it has never looked behind but has moved forward to achieve the objectives and goals of the programme with a slogan “A Journey of Education for Peace and Spirituality”. Our Vision We want a peaceful and progressive society to evolve where there is solidarity for all human beings and there is ecological balance that ensures Physical, Mental and Spiritual Growth of everybody by sharing the Earth equally now and keeping it sustained for eternity. Our Mission Solidarity for Developing Communities endeavours to build peace, communal harmony and spirituality among the men and women of Adivasi, Dalit and other communities through a process of development intervention and non-violent conflict transformation within a broad framework of sustainable community development approach. Our Belief We strongly believe that Peace and Development are closely interlinked and cannot exist without each other. We need lasting Peace for which one needs Sustainable Development with Justice. We know that if development fails conflict happens where poor and marginalized communities especially from Adivasis and Dalit communities suffer most. We also believe that Spirituality generates virtues to lessen sufferings which help bring Peace and Development. Our Core Values

Target Group

The focus groups are the inhabitants especially belonging to Adivasi, Dalit and OBC communities of 4

districts of Southern Odisha i.e. Gajapati, Kandhamal, Rayagada and Ganjam. Among these

communities the poorest of the poor are given much priority. The poor bright and not so bright

students, their parents, teachers, AWWs, AWHs, and the CBOs headed by people belonging to these

communities are given more importance.

Programme coverage area

SFDC is presently working in 55 Gram Panchayats in 15 Blocks of Kandhamal, Gajapati, Rayagada and

Ganjam districts of Southern Orissa.

Institution Based Programme reached 43 Panchayats of 13 blocks from 4 Southern District- Ganjam, Gajapati, Kandhamal and Rayagada)

Community Based Programme reached 220 villages of 12 Panchayats of 3 blocks (Mohana, Soroda and Daringbadi) from 3 districts of Southern Odisha- Gajapati, Ganjam and Kandhamal respectively.

MAJOR PROGRAMME ACTIVITIES

SFDC has divided its programme intervention into two categories i.e. Institution Based Programme and Community Based Programme.

INSTITUTION BASED PROGRAMME:

The developmental intervention made through the institution based programme is mentioned as below:

Project Name – Higher Education For Adivasi and Dalit Students in Orissa (HEADSO)

Project Supported By – KZE/Misereor, Germany (321-914-1107 ZG)

Overall Goal – The goal of this project is to provide access to quality education for children and youth from marginalised groups (Adivasis, Dalits and OBC communities) enabling them to gain employment, thus contributing towards increased presence of these communities in the mainstream of society with peace and compassion values. Specific Objectives –

At least 70% of the children (aged 3-6) of 32 out of 41 targeted Anganwadi Centres

(AWCs) have improved school preparedness, by having access to inclusive and quality

early childhood education (ECE) and due entitlements.

Children of at least 30 out of 40 targeted primary schools have access to inclusive and

quality education and their entitlements; as a result 70% of the children improve their

learning level.

At least 60% of 200 students will pass 10' grade, among them 100 former drop-outs.

843 students — Dalit, Adivasi and OBC youths — have pursued education in Science,

Humanities and Commerce at +2 college level.

The major activities and the achievements of major Institution Based Programmes is mentioned as below:

Every year more than 350 poor bright and not so bright students from remote and mountainous areas, from Adivasi, Dalit and OBC communities from Kandhamal, Gajapati, Rayagada and Ganjam districts of Southern Odisha got an opportunity to pursue higher education in +2 and +3 Science in a residential setting. Almost 46% girls get an opportunity to pursue higher education in a residential setting.

The KarunaShanti +2 Science Residential Higher Secondary School managed by SFDC have received the affiliation renewal for the year 2018-2019 after complying with all the rules and regulations of the DHE, Odisha for the smooth functioning of the residential colleges with the support and guidance of SFDC management.

The +3 Science residential colleges managed by SFDC have received the temporary recognition for the year 2019-2020 with 64 seats (PCM & CBZ-32 seats each, Honours in Physics, Chemistry, Botany and Zoology with 16 seats each) after complying with all the rules and regulations of the DHE, Odisha for the smooth functioning of the residential colleges with the support and guidance of SFDC management.

Out of 108 students from +2 Science 2nd year of 15th batch, 105 students appeared their final CHSE board examination and 95 students (Girls-42, Boys-53) passed out the Annual CHSE board examination successfully. Out of 95 passed out students, 9 students got 1st division (Girls-1, boys-8), 46 students got 2nd division (Girls-15, Boys-31) and 40 students got 3rd division (Girls-26, Boys-14). The overall pass percentage result was 90%.

Out of 110 students enrolled (48-girls, 62-boys) all 110 poor students belonging to Adivasi, Dalit, OBC communities are pursuing higher education in +2 1st year Science as 17th batch students (for the session 2019-2021).

Total 110 students of (17th batch – 48 Girls, 62 Boys) enrolled for +2 Science 1st year and 29 new students (5th batch- 8 Girls, 21 boys) for +3 Science 1st year in the KarunaShanti Residential College (KSRC) and were welcomed by the senior batch students by welcome ceremony showing a gesture of love and compassion towards their juniors.

Orientation on HH programme and envisioning of HH was conducted for students +2 and +3 Science students on 30th July 2019. In the orientation programme all the students actively took active part and shared their experiences and learning with the new batch students with much eagerness.

The KarunaShanti +2 and +3 Science Residential College has provided quality teaching by recruiting very experienced lecturers from different field of science to teach the students to achieve better results in their examinations. 20 qualified, experienced and dedicated lecturers and the 4 laboratory demonstrators have imparted quality education to the Human Harmonisers by completing the courses on time as per the syllabus, cleared the doubts of the Human Harmonisers, and conducted periodic examinations (DAT, MAT, PTS) that has helped the HH to perform well in their final examinations.

105 students (Girls – 46, Boys-59) from +2 Science 2nd year of 16th batch have successfully appeared both their practical and theory CHSE Board examination and are confident that they will complete their annual examination successfully with good marks.

Out of 110 students (Girls-48, Boys-62) of 17th batch, 109 students appeared their Annual Internal promotion examination held in the month of February 2020 and out of 109 students 104 students had appeared the examination and out of it 38 students got 1st division, 26 got 2nd division, 15 got 3rd division, 26 got failed and 5 remained absent. As this was an internal promotion examination, all those who got failed and were absent again were given opportunity to improve themselves and repeat the examination and then got promoted to 2nd year.

Out of 113 students, 110 students (49 Girls, 61 Boys) from 16th batch 2nd year, got an opportunity to go for exposure visit and studied different social-economic, religious and cultural conditions of different communities of our project areas and got an opportunity to learn the socio-economic, religion, culture and traditional values of those communities who are different from their own community. After the exposure visit, students shared their feelings that they have experienced the values of inclusiveness and compassion taught to them that has helped them to live together and create a discrimination free atmosphere within themselves and other communities and these values will help them to be better human beings in the future.

All the 108 students (47 Girls and 61 Boys) from 2nd year (16th batch) got an opportunity to attend a training programme conducted for them on Youth Motivational and Leadership Development that has motivated them to take leadership position to work for the development of their own communities and also to initiate and continue developmental activities in their own villages.

The Personality development and training courses such as NVC, Self Management and Leadership development, and Exposure Visit has helped the students to be bold and smart enough to grow together with their urban friends.

The socio-cultural and religious barrier was observe to be narrowed down between the Adivasi, Dalit and OBC students as they celebrate their cultural and religious festivals by being together.

The adolescent health care training for girls has helped them to learn on taking good care of themselves and now they have continued to handle their own hygiene related issues without any problem.

After the gender sensitivity training, all the students have developed respect towards each other and have broken down the barrier of gender discrimination and violence existing within them. All the boys and girls have taken decision to respect each other and to play an importance role in building a discrimination and violence free just and harmonious society for peaceful co-existence.

Total 100 students (Girls-42 and Boys-58) from 16th batch (+2 Sc 2nd year) got an opportunity to conduct Village Development Initiative Programme in their own village during their summer vacation holidays and could internalize their social responsibilities towards the development of their own communities.

All the 110 students (48 girls, 62 boys) from +2 1st year science (17th batch) got an opportunity to develop their confidence of effective communication after participating and learning from the Public Speaking Training programme and are now able to participate fearlessly and with confidence in debate and seminars conducted within and outside the school campus.

Every year all the +2 and +3 students participated during the celebrations of festivals and important days in an inclusive and participating manner thus resulting in breaking the barrier of caste, religion and gender discrimination prevailed in them. This has contributed in developing a harmonious living condition within the premises they reside and pursue their higher education. These values have helped them to be better persons in their lives.

Students of +2 and +3 batch regularly participated in different indoor and outdoor sports and games conducted for them and learnt to play with each other in an inclusive manner and connect with each other by breaking all sorts of discrimination prevailed in them.

The extra-curricular activities conducted for the students such as plantation of trees, sports, games, cleaning the ashram surrounding, etc, have given an opportunity to the students to come closer to each other by breaking down all sorts of discriminations, and barriers prevailed in their communities.

Every day all +2 and +3 students regularly practice meditation, write gratitude journal, read from speaking tree, practice prayer, sing spiritual songs, etc. These daily practices have helped them to develop peaceful and compassionate values, and a heart filled with love and respect for all.

All the +2 and +3 students continue to practice Non-violence Communication methods in their day-to-day life to develop a non-violent, compassionate, inclusive, harmonious, and violence free environment in the residential college they stay and study.

All the +2 Sc. and +3 students participated during the celebrations of festivals and important days in an inclusive and participating manner thus resulting in breaking the barrier of caste, religion and gender discrimination prevailed in them. This has contributed in developing a harmonious living condition within the premises they reside and pursue their higher education.

Students were encouraged to appear different professional entrance examinations such as NTA-NEET-2019, OUAT, JEE, to qualify and join in MBBS, Engineering, MBA, Nursing, Pharmacy, IT, etc. courses. In the year 2019-20 total 37 new students (18 girls and 19 boys) from KSRHSS had registered for NEET-2019.

33 students (18 girls, 15-boys) appeared the NEET (MBBS entrance exam), Out of 33 students

appeared, 26 students (13 girls and 13 boys) have qualified NEET-2019 entrance examination this year,

out of which 7 student (4 girls and 3 boys) were in the merit list different medical college to pursue

MBBS and BDS courses. But out of 7, only two of them i.e. Tofan Nayak and Suprava Bhoi joined MBBS

course and 3 students i.e. Menakshi Padra, Tabitha Digal and Loparani Paraseth joined in B.Sc. Nursing

professional courses. Also 4 students had applied and appeared OUAT-2019 examination and out of

them 1 girl student Menakshi Deshmajhi joined in OUAT (Orissa University of Agriculture and

Technology).

6 nos. of lecturers in Biology(2), Physics(2) and Chemistry(2) provide entrance coaching to

the HH, conducts regular classes and periodic examinations and guide them to prepare well

to appear and get success in the entrance examinations.

33 HH have received 50% loan scholarship towards their applicant fees for appearing

different entrance examination respectively NTA-NEET, CMC Vellore, St. John, OUAT, ICAR

and AIIMS.

5 HH (4 girls and 1 boy) have received loan scholarship between Rs. 50000-Rs. 1,00,000 each

towards joining first year professional course fees for the session 2019-20. COMMUNITY BASED PROGRAMME: The developmental interventions through the major community based programmes are as below: Project Name – Higher Education For Adivasi and Dalit Students in Orissa (HEADSO)

Specific Objectives –

In all the 41 AWCs innovative TLMs with joyful method of teaching have been implemented

and the AWWs are using the TLMs during the classroom transactions.

All 41 AWCs are regularly providing hot cook food as per menu chart, safe drinking water to

children and take home ration under SNP programme.

Out of 41 AWCs, in 32 AWCs 413 children is school prepared.

The JCs members of 41 AWCs are regularly monitoring hot cook food provided to the

children as per menu.

41 JCs are regularly monitoring classroom transactions, cleanliness of children in the

classroom and children attendance.

Out of 41 AWCs, in 32 AWCs, 15 nos of TLMs are used during classroom transactions and

children are able to access the TLMs easily.

AWW of 25 AWCs (15 AWWs of Daringbadi and 10 AWWs of Soroda) were given onsite

training for development of TLM corners and ID card placements and the AWW have

prepared the TLMs and ID card placement corners for the use by children. Now the children

themselves are able to access their ID cards, TLMs, use it as well as place the same in order

in their proper places.

1166 no. of children from class 1 to 5 of 40 primary schools have increased their learning level.

Out of 40 primary schools, in 15 primary schools 21 lessons of class 1 and 2 were translated

in KUI and Soura language from Odia and have been implemented by the teachers during

classroom transaction. The MTB-MLE based teaching in the classroom has helped the

children to learn their lessons easily and further helped to increase their learning level.

SMC members of 40 schools are regularly monitoring MDM, teacher and student

attendance, classroom transaction and hygiene in the schools.

Play for Peace is conducted two days in a week in all the 40 schools for the children that has

motivated the school children to play together inclusively without fear and hesitation,

irrespective of their caste, creed, sex and religion to create a discrimination free

environment. All the teachers support for play for peace activities in the schools.

All the students (1353 students) of 40 schools (1 to 5th class students) have received text

books, uniforms and shoes.

In 40 primary schools of Goudogotha and Daringbadi Blocks, peace and non-violence

fortnight was celebrated to spread the message of peace and non-violence for peaceful co-

existence and to reduce the practice of discrimination.

Out of 96 students those who appeared AHSC examination 80 students have passed out 10th

class for the session 2018-2019 undertaking coaching in our supplementary coaching

centers.

Five remedial coaching centres are operational in the project areas where 10 no. of teachers,

2 in each coaching centres, are working regularly to impart coaching to students.

The Committee members of all the five respective coaching centers conducts meetings

regularly and discuss regarding the functioning of coaching centre, teacher-students’

regularity and raising local funds for managing the coaching centre in a sustainable manner.

Project Name: Unnati Sikhya Se Project No: NEG-FIRE/OD-02/1651/2017-18 Project supported by: NEG-FIRE, New Delhi. Overall Goal: Ensuring foundational learning among children of marginalized communities. Specific Objectives

80% of 77 AWCs of new intervention areas are ICDS norm compliant and 80% of marginalized

children aged 3-6 years of 15 preschools of old intervention areas are school ready in Mohona

Block by the end of 3 years.

80% of 40 primary schools of new intervention areas are RTE rules compliant and 70% of

marginalized children from 1-3 standard of 15 schools of old intervention areas have enhanced

learning level by the end of three years.

70% of JC, MC and SMCs of new intervention areas have influenced AWCs and Primary schools and 80% of JC, MC and SMCs of old intervention areas have influenced AWCs and Primary schools for ICDS norms and RTE compliance by the end of three years.

Permission from block and ICDS authorities are obtained for replication of MTB MLE and Joyful learning skills modules in other education clusters of the block by the end of three years.

The major activities and the achievements of Community Based Programmes are as below:

Out of 40 AWCs, 35 are functional. The AWCs are functioning properly and opens and closes on

time, AWW & AWH are regular to the AWC, conduct joyful learning activities for children and

visit houses for THR and motivating parents to send their children to AWC.

As per ICDS norms 657 children (307 girls and 350 boys) of 40 AWCs have received entitlements

like hot cook meal, play materials, drinking water facilities, SNP, uniform, picture books and

writing materials.

11 step methodologies are implemented in 10 AWCs i.e. Nijuma, Kumbimera, Kunkuni,

Bandhaguda, Marchima, Ludru, Ptratapur, Tutuguda, Dhepapadar and Padaambo. Children

easily access and use different TLM materials which helped them to be school ready.

By the end of this quarter 42 children (Girls-19, Boys-23) of 20 AWCs have acquired language and

numeracy competencies and are made school ready. Out of total 334 children of 20 old AWCs

215(Girls-97 and Boys-118) children have acquired language and numeracy competencies and

are school prepared.

Out of total 334 children of 20 old AWCs 195(Girls-86 and Boys-109) children have acquired

physical and socio-emotional competencies and are school prepared.

All the 36 schools are functioning properly complying to RTE norms. 83 teachers regularly goes

to schools and classes are conducted regularly, students are regular to their classes, SMCs also

visit regularly to monitor different school related activities, teacher and parents meetings are

conducted regularly.

Complying to RTE norms in all 40 primary schools (20 old schools and 20 new schools) 1814

students (Girls-904 and Boys-910) of (class 1 to 5) have received entitlements like uniform,

MDM, play materials, MTB-MLE TLMs, shoes and safe drinking water facilities due to which

children are able to attend schools regularly and students retention in school has increased.

10 Treasure House are regularly opening and was facilitated by the village volunteer. Regular

activities such as (1) play for peace (2) Art and music (3) story telling by the village elders (4)

supplementary classes are conducted. This has helped the students to improve their extra-

curricular activities.

Khel se Mel implemented in 40 primary Schools which has created Effective Inclusion and

increased student participation in classroom activities.

19 teachers of 16 schools are able to use big book related TLMs in their language.

Total 714 students (Girls- 317, Boys-397) out of 1089 children (Girls-556 and Boys-533) of (class 1

to 5) of 20 old schools (class 1 to 5)have acquired grade appropriate learning level on language.

Total 621 children (Girls- 268, Boys-353) out of 1089 children (Girls-556 and Boys-533) of (class 1

to 5) of 20 old schools (class 1 to 5)have acquired grade appropriate learning level on numeracy.

Out of 40 JCs and MCs, 29 JCs and MCs were fully functional and other new 11 JCs and MCs have

started functioning. The Janch Committees and Matru Committees were regularly monitoring

proper distribution of hot cook food, THR, uniforms, playing materials, safe drinking water

facilities, TLMs, visiting AWCs during preschool activities, Identification of issues related to AWCs

and have raised issues in Gram Sabha like renovation and repairing of AWC building, kitchen

room, toilets, road to AWCs and Boundary wall.

In all the 40 AWCs of old and new intervention areas 657children were provided uniforms and

pictorial writing books.

Out of 40 SMCs, 32 SMCs were functional like monitoring the MDM, distribution of uniforms,

text books, games materials, drinking water facilities, separate toilets for girls and boys, TLMs,

visit school activities, conducting monthly meetings, learning level aspects, discrimination free

schools, monitoring during classroom transactions, preparation of School Development Plans,

Identification of issues related to schools and resolve it.

Out of 40 JCs and MCs 20 have created model AWCs with compliance of ICDS norms.

Out of 40 SMCs 20 SMCs have created model primary schools with RTE rules compliance.

MTB-MLE and joyful learning skill modules are developed and the ICDS supervisor and BDO have

supported us to conduct various trainings related to preschool activities.

MTB-MLE based big-book of class 1 & 2 is completed and it is used during the classroom

transactions. The ABEO and CRCC also visited the schools and encouraged the teachers to use

big books and its related TLMs and they have also showed their interest by attending different

training programmes conducted by SFDC with the support of NEG-FIRE.

All teachers use multilingual teaching to overcome the language barriers in the classroom.

District Resource Group (DRG) is active in adopting the pedagogy developed by SFDC in local

Primary Schools.

Interface meeting between PRI members, SMC, Teachers and schools cabinets were facilitated

to resolve the village school issues like drinking water, functional toilets, school boundary etc.

Peace and non-violence day was celebrated in program village schools and Anganwadi centres.

Block Authorities invite our staff to go beyond project area for classroom transaction.

Project Name: Preventing trafficking of women and girls and empowerment of domestic workers.

Project supported by: NAWO, Bhubaneswar.

Specific Objective:

Preventing trafficking of women and girls in India through empowerment and organisation of domestic workers.

The major activities and the achievements are as below:

1780 domestic workers from Gajapati and Ganjam became members and got associated with SEWA union.

590 domestic workers have renewed their membership with SEWA union. 170 women from different villages like Tiama, K.gani, Bandhapad, Tutuguda, Gochaguda

and Ludru worked in MGNRGS programme and each individual have received Rs 2400/ wages.

7 villages were sanctioned money from the Gram Panchyat on MGNREGS for construction of new roads, renovation or ponds, land leveling, stone bonding etc, sanctioned programme were carried out by the village PRI members and SEWA member and village youth .

21 women received benefit from the social security schemes from the construction board.

47 SEWA members were linkaged with Pradhana Mantri Shrama dhana Yojana insurance schemes from the Labour department of India .

31 SEWA members from different villages like madhuramba, Kgani, Tuaguda, Kbandhaguda are doing organic vegetable cultivation of Brinjal, tomato, ladies finger, pumpkin, lentil, etc .

80% SEWA women are engaged in maize cultivation and pulses, bean, ragi etc . 4 new SHG have received OLM fund from the Block department (each received Rs

15000/)

4 domestic violence solved in two different villages like Chotbori and Hundi padar .

34 farmers received 2000 cashew plants from the ITDA and OTELP) each farmers received 50 to 100 plants for plantation in their own land.

Interface meetings between victim families and Govt. authorities were facilitated. Members were given livelihood and entrepreneurship development training. All union members participated in the palisabha and gramsabha for solving their

village level issues like water scarcity, road damage, delay payment of MGNREGS work.

Families migrating to cities are getting benefits of better working condition.

Project Name: Peace Building initiative in Berhampur Diocese/Peace Building & Conflict Transformation initiative Gajapati district.

Specific Objective:

Communities in two districts of South Odisha establish sustainable peaceful coexistence through vibrant Civil Society Organizations.

The major activities and the achievements are as below:

1. 85 nos. of VPDCs & PPDC leaders have received Conflict Transformation and Peace Building Training ( CTPB)

2. 23no.of domestic violence, 5 nos. of resource based conflicts, 1 no. of communal conflict were solved by the VPDCs.

3. 2 nos.of Political conflicts were solved by the PPDCs.

Project Name: Construction of a Meditation Centre for the students of KarunaShanti Ashram &

Centenary Celebration and Centenary Hall for Fr. Pascal Singh at Allanjuri.

Specific Objectives:

To complete the construction of an Interspiritual Action and Meditation/Contemplation

Centre for 500 inmates of KarunaShanti Ashram (KSA) consisting of Dalit, Adivasi and OBC

students, their teachers and parents for the spiritual transformation to build discrimination

free and peace loving communities.

To conduct meditation and contemplation everyday and conduct different spiritual

transformation activities to develop an attitude of Peace, Non-violence, compassion and

harmony of 500 students, teachers and parents which will reduce the inferiority complex

and increase the dignity of the students and their communities.

The major activities and the achievements are as below:

The pillars laid were completed with up to 14 feet with 8 pillars of 1’ x 2’ each.

The basement surrounding brick walls of 14 feet are also completed.

Concrete work by filling up of metal, cement and sand of flooring is completed and the tile

work is yet to be complete.

Water curing work of brick walls and flooring was regularly done and completed.

Part construction of the meditation hall is completed as per the designed and blue print

approved by Missio with a total cost of Rs 7,45,385.

Now more than 350 students are pursuing higher education in +2 and +3 Science in the

KarunaShanti Science Residential College located within the KarunaShanti Ashram.

Every day students, teachers and staffs practices meditation twice (morning and evening) to

develop spiritually strong and maintain a balanced life but due to Corona pandemic it was

stopped.

Majority of the students and teacher have internalized the importance of meditation which

helped them in their spiritual growth.

A vibrant meditation and contemplation team comprising of students, teachers, and staffs

have emerged with a strong focus on practicing spirituality.

Most of the students have expressed that meditation practice has help them to increase

their concentration during their study hours and they are able to study for long hours.

Students also write and share their gratitude journal with their fellow mates and have

increased their sharing attitude.

All the students are practicing Non-violent Communication in day to day life and are able to

maintain a peaceful environment with their family and friends by sharing their needs and

feelings among themselves.

Majority of the students have developed some understanding on contemplative prayer and

the need of daily meditation.

the vision, mission and goal of the organization; makes new strategies and policies for the smooth

functioning of the organization and has provided moral support and guidance to the staffs and
