The King David Schools’ Foundation is the fundraising arm of King David Schools. It is a separate legal entity from the South African Board of Jewish Education (SABJE) which governs the day to day running of the King David Schools and which has its own set of trustees and its own trust deed governing its actions. An extensive Service Level Agreement exists to govern the relationship between these two separate entities.

2018 was a seminal year as it marked the 70th anniversary of the King David Schools. The impact of this legacy is near impossible to
quantify – safe to say thousands of King David graduates have gone out into the world and assumed leadership roles in South Africa
and outside of it – guided and energised by their Jewish values. The King David Schools’ Foundation plays a critical role in enabling
this legacy. Over the past five years, the funds committed have grown to a massive R260 million, with the number of donors
expanding, and the number of Crown Donors (those committing in excess of R100,000) growing over three times to 315 donors.
This speaks to the focus of the King David Schools’ Foundation in ensuring a sustainable approach to reach and impact, with over
500 learners financially assisted each year; and to the generosity of our community. The spread of donors is also remarkable and
spans our local community, as well as donors from other countries.
Generous donations have enabled us to improve facilities across all our campuses, with King David Ariel being a highlight over the
2018 year. With this facility, we have ensured that Jewish children are included in a school system that caters for diverse learning
needs. The past year also saw the continued activity and meaningful events involving donors and alumni. This included Dynamic
Davidian events, school reunions, and facilitating the funding of PJ Library, South Africa. PJ Library is an international programme
of the Harold Grinspoon Foundation, which distributes high quality, Jewish themed, children’s books, free-of-charge to Jewish
children, aged 3-8 years every month.
On behalf of the Trustees, I would like to express my gratitude to Raelene Tradonsky and Elliot Wolf. They are testament to the
Pareto principle, that a few individuals can have a disproportionate impact on a system - their fundraising efforts are extraordinary
and ensure the long-term success of our schools. My sincere thanks also goes to my fellow Trustees of the Board and to our donors,
for their ongoing commitment, which ensures that our schools and scholars continue to stand for academic and leadership
excellence – lighthouses for the South African Jewish community.

MESSAGE FROM ADRIAN GORE
MESSAGE FROM RABBI CRAIG KACEVEvery educator knows that a good lesson needs a “hook”, a beginning that creates enough interest,
imagination and curiosity to grab an audience’s attention. At a Pesach Seder there are a lot of stimuli
to do just this and one of these is the reading of a paragraph in Aramaic, Ha lachma anyah, referring to
matzah as the bread of oppression. It goes on to extend an invitation, “may all who are hungry come and
eat…” At the moment when we have returned from shul, closed the front door and are about to sit down
we extend the invitation! Too late, many may say, and yet the message is clear, one that Jewish families
hold dear, even if we are in a comfortable position, we need to spread our circle of concern by asking
what others may need.
The needs of the community are many, yet the King David Schools’ Foundation is focused on the needs
of over 3300 current students in the King David Schools and the future sustainability of this communal
jewel. This can only be achieved when generous and numerous alumni, community members and
friends in South Africa and globally show their support through donations. Over 500 students are getting
some level of support and many very old buildings are being refurbished. King David Ariel is flourishing
and in its second year is already full to capacity from grades 1-4. Investment in teacher professional
development is at its highest levels. All of this, while a future-focused endowment is being built, ensures
the longevity of the school and, by implication, the Johannesburg Jewish Community.
We are deeply grateful to all of the donors and we thank you for your support and concern for our
schools. We express a deep sense of gratitude to Mr Adrian Gore and the Foundation Trustees for their
time, effort and expertise. Finally, we pay tribute to the tireless efforts of Raelene Tradonsky, Executive
Director, Mr Wolf and the professional staff of the Foundation.
RABBI CRAIG KACEVGeneral Director SABJE
MESSAGE FROM ELLIOT WOLF &RAELENE TRADONSKYIn a year of celebration to mark the 70th anniversary of the founding of the King David
Schools, it is inevitable that we look back with pride on the indispensable role that our
schools have played in the Jewish community of Johannesburg. Our celebratory dinner for
our very generous donors in Johannesburg, followed by the exciting reunions in New York
and London and the forthcoming reunion in Sydney bear testimony to the high regard in
which our schools are held both by its former students and the present members of the
Johannesburg Jewish community.
The King David Schools’ Foundation is proud to play a part in ensuring that our schools
maintain their renowned academic record and, in addition, show the benefits of the
various projects on the school campuses, all of which are made possible by the exceptional
generosity of our loyal donors. Unlike most exclusive private schools, our King David
schools have the cherished distinction of being community schools, and with that, the
responsibility for subsidising over five hundred deserving students. How proud we should
feel that with this inclusive policy we are playing a part in ensuring the continuity and future
of our people.
In a world beset with so many daunting challenges and momentous changes, we are
conscious of our role as the fundraisers who contribute to the equanimity of our schools,
both emotionally and physically. May the following wonderful words of Rabbi Lord Jonathan
Sacks continue to be our inspiration:
“Change is not threatening, so long as we keep hold of the values by which we live. We can
travel with confidence as long as we have a map. We can jump with safety, knowing there is
someone to catch us as we fall.”

SCHOOL UPGRADEPROJECTS
2018/2019
The King David Schools’ Foundation, together with the South African
Board of Jewish Education is committed to sustaining Jewish education
into the future. This includes continuous infrastructure upgrades and improvements on our campuses, as well as investment in teacher
development programmes.
Infrastructure Upgrades
King David High School Victory ParkThis project includes the removal of all prefabricated classrooms and
the building of ten new classrooms, a brand new art studio, extra offices,
bathrooms, storage spaces and a dedicated matric room, with the existing
art room being converted into a space for consumer studies.
Building commenced: December 2018
Anticipated completion: End August 2019
King David Victory Park Pre-PrimaryThis project includes the refurbishment of the existing classrooms,
enhancement of the covered walkway, improvements to the playground as
well as the building of a new entrance, lobby and administrative office area.
Anticipated completion: September 2019.
Teacher Development Programme
As part of the Teacher Development Programme, donations to the King David Schools’
Foundation, supported with funding from the Jewish Agency, have been allocated to Israel
trips for teachers across all five King David campuses. The teachers engaged in an online
study course on Israel followed by a 10 day planned trip to Israel. Following these trips there
have been tangible and very positive changes to education about Israel in the schools.
Over the last 5 years, teachers from the pre-primary schools, as well as both high schools,
Linksfield and Victory Park, have participated in the programme. Teachers from King David
Junior Primary and King David Senior Primary Linksfield will be participating in this wonderful
initiative during 2019.

KING DAVID JUNIOR PRIMARY LINKSFIELD
145 children from Bright Star Academy participated in mini cricket, cricket, ball skills and soccer
practices with students from King David Junior Primary Linksfield, under the capable direction of
King David sports coaches. In addition, staff members from Bright Stars Academy attended a series
of art workshops presented by King David talented art specialist Merle Maselle. The teachers then
successfully transferred the skills learnt at the workshops into their classrooms and presented
examples of beautiful art works completed by their children.
UBUNTU AFRICA SUMMER CAMP PROGRAMME
The Ubuntu Africa ‘Summer Camp’ took place for the fourth consecutive year and was run by the
Diller Teens Programme and King David schools. The camp began 4 years ago in response to the
horrifying statistics of child drownings that emerge in December each year, with a specific focus
on safety and fun in the water. The participants, aged 4-7, learn to swim, gain life skills, participate
in activities aimed at building self-esteem and have fun with a celebratory Christmas party and
nutritious daily meals.
OUTREACH PROGRAMMEOur schools quite naturally cater predominantly for the needs of Jewish students, and this
realisation prompted the need to provide an opportunity for our students to interact with
their disadvantaged counterparts in other schools, and in so doing give our students the
chance to transcend the differences in their socio-economic and cultural backgrounds. In
the past year, the following schools have participated in the important programme, with
the King David Schools’ Foundation assisting with funding for the projects.
KING DAVID HIGH SCHOOL LINKSFIELD
Thirty students from Waverley Girls’ High School are bussed to Linksfield for a Maths
enrichment programme. Mrs Katzenellenbogen, a Maths teacher at the school, teaches the
group, and this is followed by a reinforcement exercise with King David students tutoring
the girls on a one-to-one basis.
This project, in its second year, has proved successful with the Waverley girls finding the
tutoring extremely beneficial and the King David students enjoying the tutoring of and the
social interaction with their peers.
OUTREACHPROGRAMME
KING DAVID SENIOR PRIMARY LINKSFIELD
King David Senior Primary Linksfield shared a wonderful 2018 with their partnership school, Summerwood Primary, with many exciting events which gave the children the opportunity to bond and share ideas.
The Grade 7 pupils from King David Linksfield and Summerwood celebrated ‘The Sounds
of Celebration’ cultural event at Emperors Palace. Together with their teachers, they sang,
danced and celebrated their diversity. Grade 4 teachers and pupils celebrated a wonderful
Heritage Day at Summerwood Primary School. The Grade 7 King David Linksfield Hip Hop
dancers taught all the Grade 4’s a song and dance together which created great excitement
and unity.
The Hebrew teachers organised an Israeli breakfast and all the children joined in with Israeli
dancing. The Summerwood children were dressed in traditional clothing representing
different cultures. They sang, danced and acted, demonstrating their different cultures. It
was an exceptional celebration of tolerance, diversity, friendship and mutual respect.
Grade 5 King David and Summerwood pupils shared an ‘Integrated Literature Learning Day’
with activities centred around the Grade 5 Literature book, The Tall Giraffe. An integrated
approach was used which included tasks in different learning areas related to giraffes. It
was wonderful for the children to share ideas and gain new insights from one another.
The Grade 6 Summerwood pupils joined our Grade 6’s for a constructive Leadership
Day involving different activities, which encouraged teamwork, self-confidence and the
opportunity to explore different possibilities using critical thinking. The important message
of developing our future leaders together was strongly felt in the positive interaction.
On Women’s Day, Summerwood hosted an afternoon with speakers and entertainers
to celebrate women’s rights. They were extremely hospitable and they arranged gifts
for each visitor from their sponsors. The Grade 7 pupils danced and recited meaningful
poetry. Women’s Day symbolises hope for all societies. It was a privilege to be part of such
a significant occasion.
On our Cultural Day, children from Summerwood, Saheti, King David Linksfield, King David
Sandton and King David Victory Park participated in cultural activities. They took part in
debating, public speaking, chess and table tennis. It was a most successful event and one
which we will repeat.
The Grade 7 King David Councils shared a paired reading day with the Grade 4’s at
Summerwood. They collected books for the children and their aim was to encourage
reading. Led by the Grade 7’s, the students were reading together, telling stories and
discussing their ideas.
A highlight of the year was the combined King David Linksfield and Summerwood Choir,
which participated in the King David Schools’ Foundation 70th Anniversary Donor
Celebration and epitomised the essence of a valued partnership.
With the ongoing support and generosity of the King David Schools’ Foundation, King David
Senior Primary Linksfield have the privilege of enjoying and building a special bond with
Summerwood, and value the positive teamwork which includes Heads of Schools, staff
and pupils.

70TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATORY DONOR DINNER
A highlight of the 2018 year was a dinner in Johannesburg in August for all CROWN Donors to
celebrate 70 years of King David Schools and to thank them for their ongoing support, which
helps us to ensure that we can continue this legacy Dor le Dor, from Generation to Generation
The evening showcased the 7 core values that have sustained the schools and shaped thousands
of lives over 7 decades - Jewish Values, Zionism, Community, Networks, Relationships, Excellence
in Education and Potential for Greatness.
Each value was depicted as a narrative in story, music or dance, and was portrayed by talented
students and alumni. The night was a fitting tribute to King David schools and its 7-decade
legacy, to the Jewish values that keep Davidians connected to their community, the networks
that support them in their careers, and the friendships that carry them through life. It was also
a celebration of our generous donors, the true architects and builders of our schools, who
enable the King David Schools’ Foundation to look toward the future, and help guarantee the
sustainability of our beautiful community school, and the Johannesburg Jewish community.
WOMEN’S DAY EVENT
During August, Women’s month in SA, the KDSF hosted alumnae Kara Stoler (KDHSVP 2003)
and Anthea Pokroy (KDHSVP 2003), who together with Benon Lutaaya, one of South Africa’s top
selling artists (who has sadly since passed away), entertained alumnae and parents with their
knowledge of the South African art world and shared interesting insights into the changing South
African art space. In the spirit and ethos of the KDSF, a modest Benon spoke about his NPO,
The Project Space - a cultural institution that encourages and empowers female African artists,
one of whom won South Africa’s most promising artist at the Joburg Art Fair in September 2018.
When asked why he specifically wanted to assist female artists, Benon explained that all the
people who had helped him to achieve his goals, are women. The morning was a fitting tribute to women, King Davidians and the value of Gemilut Chesed – loving-kindness and thinking of others.
The London event heard KDSF trustee, Stephen Koseff speak about why he had involved himself
in the Foundation and the need for alumni to give it their support, and fellow trustee Cy Jacobs
(KDHSVP 1987) shared his personal story ‘from subsidy kid to major donor’. Lynnette Gottlieb
(KDHSL 1961), the daughter of the late Louis Sachs, one of the 3 original Founders of King David
Schools, spoke passionately about how ‘building KD and fundraising for this new Jewish School’
was her father’s life-long passion.
To continue the celebrations and to keep in touch with the many alumni living in Australia, the King
David Schools’ Foundation plans to host a reunion later this year in Sydney, with Nik Rabinowitz.
These trips offer the opportunity to meet alumni, as well as new and existing donors, who pledge
to continue their support of the Foundation. These trips highlight the importance of relationship
building and face-to-face connection in fundraising.
NOKANYANA FUNDRAISING RAFFLE
The annual King David Schools’ Foundation raffle was once again extremely successful with over
R300 000 raised. A large portion of the money raised was allocated to the Samantha Amy Brest
Fund, which raises money to assist matric students in need with their matric dance expenses.
The fantastic prize, which was generously donated by an alumnus, included two dream getaways
for four people, to the luxurious Nokanyana Lodge on the banks of the Khwai River in Botswana.
Valued at over R150 000 each, each prize included return flights, four nights’ accommodation
and all meals and activities. The lucky winners were Gary Swil (KDHSL 1999) from Johannesburg
and David Gabriel (KDHSL 1986) from Melbourne.
DYNAMIC DAVIDIAN BREAKFAST EVENT
During May, the King David Schools’ Foundation hosted Dynamic Davidian, Alon Litz
(KDHSL 2002), General Manager Uber Sub-Saharan Africa, at a Dynamic Davidian breakfast
for King David parents and alumni. His presentation, entitled “The Uber Story”, detailed the
incredible history behind the inception of Uber and the rise and growth of Uber internationally, as
well as in Sub-Saharan Africa. Alon described the impact that Uber has had on both passengers
and drivers across the globe, and presented some of the future plans and developments for
Uber, including Uber Air.
70TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS IN NEW YORK & LONDON
Following the success of the 70th anniversary dinner in Johannesburg, the King Davd Schools’
Foundation hosted two smaller events in the USA and London, enabling our overseas alumni to
share in the celebrations. Comedian Nik Rabinowitz travelled from South Africa to provide the
comedy entertainment for both events.
Held at a rooftop bar in Manhattan, the New York event and was attended by almost 200 alumni
from across America. David Frankel (KDHSL 1988), a KDSF trustee, addressed the attendees,
and stressed the importance of King David Schools and their role in sustaining the Johannesburg
Jewish community. David Greenstein (KDHSL 1976), who had formulated a ‘Gofundme’
campaign to raise funds for a KD classmate’s daughter, who had cancer, and needed treatment
in the US, spoke about ‘the power of the KD network’ and how KD classmates and the ‘larger KD
community’ rallied together to raise money for her treatment.

THE GOALS OF THE KING DAVID SCHOOLS’ FOUNDATION
The King David Schools’ Foundation (KDSF) was relaunched in 2011 as the
fundraising arm of King David Schools. Proud of their ethos of being a ‘community
school’, King David Schools sought to offer financial assistance to all who could
not afford the full school fees. With this in mind, the KDSF set itself the goal of
establishing an Endowment Fund, which would be judiciously invested to ensure the
long-term sustainability of King David Schools. These schools have been central to
the community and are an asset that needs to be protected and fostered.
DONATIONS TO DATE
The KDSF has been embraced by donors around the world. The majority of the
donations have come from South African donors, and the balance from alumni and
supporters overseas.
At December 2018 commitments had reached almost R260m, with R186m already
received. Certain donors have specified that their funds be allocated to specific
projects, but most are happy to leave the funds to the discretion of the Trustees.
GOVERNANCE
The finance department of the South African Board of Education is responsible
for the financial controls of the King David Schools’ Foundation. There is a Service
Level Agreement (SLA) that determines this relationship, which is critical to
ensure that the funds raised are responsibly spent and reported on. The auditors,
PricewaterhouseCoopers, are satisfied that the controls are in place and that the
performance of the Foundation is in line with the SLA.
ENDOWMENT FUND
The Trustees have appointed an Investment Committee to oversee and report on the Endowment
Fund. The funds are currently invested with two fund managers as well as with a banking institution
to take advantage of prevailing interest rates. Funds were moved to an interest bearing investment
during the year to mitigate risk, as return from equity markets had fallen in line with depressed
market conditions. At the end of December 2018 the total fund amounted to a value of R105.5m,
with R59.9m invested with the fund managers and the balance of R45.6m invested in money market
related investments. The Trustees make investment decisions in line with a model that anticipates
existing donor commitments, investment growth and on-going and anticipated contributions to the
King David Schools’ Foundation.
FINANCIALHIGHLIGHTS
King David Schools’ Foundation Annual Report 2018/2019PAGE 17
ANNUITY INCOME
The current costs, which include staff costs and direct administration costs are R4.8m, which is 12.1% of total revenue.
The KDSF has over the past 3 years, made it a priority to encourage smaller annuity commitments so as to ensure the
sustainability of the Foundation. Over 700 donors have pledged an average of R410 per month. It is important to note that
no staff members are paid on an incentive basis.
COMMITMENTS TO THE KING DAVID SCHOOLS
To facilitate medium-term planning, the KDSF Trustees allocate funds to the King David Schools on a three-year cycle.
The current cycle included years 2017-2019. A total of R45m has been committed for this cycle.
During 2018 the commitment from the KDSF was utilised for the development of new facilities on the King David Victory
Park campus including the completion of the King David Ariel Remedial School.
In 2019 the money for infrastructure upgrades has been allocated to the King David Victory Park campus. This includes
the refurbishment of the existing classrooms and entrance, playground and administrative area at King David Pre-Primary
School Victory Park. In addition, this will entail the removal of all prefabricated classrooms, and the building of ten new
classrooms, an art studio, extra offices, bathrooms, storage spaces and a dedicated matric room, at King David High
School Victory Park. The expected completion date for both projects is September 2019.
Money allocated to the Teacher Development Programme will be assigned to teachers from King David Junior Primary and
Senior Primary Linksfield who will engage in an Israel online study programme, followed by ten-day planned trips to Israel
in July and November 2019 respectively.
All student subsidies are assessed according to the South African Board of Jewish Education subsidy application
requirements.
CONCLUSION
The Trustees and staff of the King David Schools’ Foundation are acutely aware of the tremendous responsibility they
shoulder in their roles. The King David Schools currently educate over 3300 students, 14% of whom are able to receive
one of the best educational experiences in South Africa with some level of financial assistance. This is a task that requires
tenacity, bold decisions and commitment, yet it comes with much humility in the knowledge that we all are there to serve
the current and future generations of Davidians.

whether large or small, will make a valued contribution to ensuring that King David Schools remain centres of excellence, while
we continue to provide financial assistance to families who cannot afford full school fees. If you are considering nominating
the King David Schools’ Foundation as a beneficiary of your estate, please contact the Foundation.
HOW TO MAKE A BEQUEST TO THE KING DAVID SCHOOLS’ FOUNDATION
Adding a codicil to your will may be the easiest way to make a bequest to the King David Schools’ Foundation. In a bequest
you may specify a Rand amount, or it can be a percentage of your estate. A bequest may also take the form of a specific asset,
such as a property or shares. In each case, the amount of your donation is excluded from the valuation of your estate for
estate tax or capital gains purposes. We will gladly assist with any legal advice you may need in this regard.
HOW YOUR BEQUEST WILL BE USED
Unless otherwise specified, your bequest will be allocated to the Dor le Dor campaign, to build an Endowment Fund where the
interest generated will subsidise students whose parents cannot afford full school fees. By informing us of your intentions,
we will be able to help you decide on the allocation of your bequest.
