Nestled in the panoramic scenes of Karaikal - a coastal enclave in the basin of river Cauvery in the Union Territory of Puducherry - National Institute of Technology Puducherry, established in 2010 under the Eleventh Five Year Plan, is one among the ten new NITs sanctioned by the Govt. of India in 2009. The Institute is a rapidly growing educational institution of Technical education and is striding ahead in establishing its qualitative base in Research and Higher Learning under the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India, New Delhi. The National Institute of Technology Puducherry is herewith submitting its 9th Annual Report 2018-19 to the Parliament.
Its functioning is in complete accordance with the directives of the Government requirements for the establishment of New NITs, such as minimum of 300 acres of Land, Connecting Roads, Continuous
Water Supply, Electricity etc. Further, owing to its prime location and leading industrial background, the Government of Union Territory of Puducherry identified the land in Poovam and Thiruvettakudy village at Karaikal for permanent campus construction of NIT Puducherry.
The preliminary academic session commenced in June 2010 under the mentorship of National Institute of Technology Tiruchirappalli (NIT-T) and thereafter, since 2011, NIT Puducherry took control of its own administration and management, and till date has created six successful pass out B.Tech batches (2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018 & 2019) and four M.Tech batches (2016, 2017, 2018 & 2019) of worthy technocrats with moral values and futuristic insight. The Institute is now operational in its permanent campus situated at Poovam Village, Thiruvettakudy, at Karaikal.

The Union Territory of Puducherry is constituted of the four erstwhile French establishments of Pondicherry, Karaikal, Mahe and Yanam. Karaikal region is embedded in the Nagapattinam and Thiruvarur Districts of Tamil Nadu state. Karaikal is well connected by Road network, 320 KM from Chennai, 130 KM from Puducherry, 16 KM from Nagapattinam and 160 KM from Tiruchirappalli. Also, it is
connected by Rail from Ernakulum, Chennai, Velankanni, Bangalore, Mumbai and construction of Airport at Nedungadu is in progress. The campus is well connected with road transport. The geographical demography of Karaikal district is10° 49’ 34” N South,11° 0’ 25” N North, 79° 43’ 15” E West and 79° 51’ 35” E East.

The climate at Karaikal is tropical and it suffers with maximum temperature in the month of May and June whereas minimum during the month of October to February. On an average, 45°C is recorded as maximum and 20°C as minimum. The maximum rainfall is received from the Northeast monsoon during the month of October to December.
Apart from the Pilgrim centers, Karaikal Port, Oil & Natural Gas Corporation and many large and medium scale industries like Johnson Ceramic Tiles Industry, Henkel Chemical Industry etc. plays vital role for the selection of the location. Karaikal has number of English Medium and Tamil Medium private schools, Matriculation Schools etc. Apart from that Kendriya Vidyalaya, Navodhaya School, Government Polytechnic, Industrial Training School etc. are also available. Arignar Anna Govt. Arts & Science College, Avvaiyar Govt. College for Women, Perunthalaivar Kamarajar Institute of Technology (Govt. Engg. College), Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Agricultural College (Govt. Agri. College), Perunthalaivar Kamarajar College of Education (B. Ed. College), Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER), Karaikal. Two Self Financing Engg. Colleges, one private Medical College etc., make Karaikal as education centre. Above said facilities made the Government of Puducherry to select Karaikal as an apt place for the National Institute of Technology Puducherry.
A four-member team formed by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, New Delhi visited the site and accorded approval in 2010 and subsequently by expert from Educational Consultant India Ltd (EdCIL), Government of India Undertaking at Noida inspected the place. A land of area of 256.59 acres given by Government of Puducherry has scenic beauty of sea shore on eastern side and several water canals passing through. The presence of water bodies and greenery in the area provides pollution free and Eco-friendly atmosphere, an apt place to establish an Educational Institution.
2.1 REGISTRATIONInitially, the Institute was registered as Society under Societies Registration Act 1860 with the Registrar of Companies, Puducherry on 25.03.2010 vide registration No. 134/2010 during March 2010 with members from Govt. of Puducherry, Ministry of Human Resource Development, New Delhi and Mentor Institute.
In the year 2012-13, the Government of India, Ministry of Human Resource Development, Dept. of Higher Education, New Delhi have brought all the ten new National Institute of Technology formed during 2009-10 under the National Institute of Technology Act, 2007 (29 of 2007) passed by Parliament by NIT (Amendment) Act 2012 (28 of 2012) on 7th June 2012. This has been communicated by the Ministry vide its letter no. F.33-8/2012-TS III dated 12.11.2012.

3.1 BOARD OF GOVERNORSThe Director & Officiating Chairperson
In the Financial Year 2018-19, Dr. Sivaji Chakravorti, the Director of NIT Calicut, was the Incharge Director of NIT Puducherry from 03.02.2018 to 04.04.2018 and Dr. K. Sankaranarayanasamy, Professor, Department of Mechanical Engineering, NIT Tiruchirappalli has joined as the Director of NIT Puducherry on 05.04.2018 and continued during the year under report.
Dr. Sivaji Chakravorti, Professor, Department of Electrical Engineering, Jadavpur university, Kolkata having more than 45 years of experience in Teaching and Research (Published more than 150 papers in referred International, National Journals and Conferences, guided six Ph.Ds), received several awards such as ‘Technical University-Munich Ambassador Award’ in 2013, ‘Technology Day Award’ from All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) in 2003 and the ‘Outstanding Chapter Engineer Award’ from IEEE Power & Energy Society in 2007. He is Fellow of the Indian National Academy of Engineering, Fellow of National Academy of Sciences, India, Senior Member of IEEE (USA), Fellow of West Bengal Academy of Science & Technology and Fellow of the Institute of Electronics and Telecommunications Engineers. He is an Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Dielectrics and Electrical Insulation. He is Chairman-Elect of IEEE India Council for 2015-2016, was the Chairman of IEEE Kolkata Section during 2011-2012. He was selected by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, New Delhi, as Director of the NIT Puducherry.
Dr. K. Sankaranarayanasamy, Professor, Department of Mechanical Engineering, National Institute of Technology Tiruchirappalli was born in Tamil Nadu in 1959. He completed his doctorate degree in the area of gear manufacturing from IIT Madras, post graduate from department of Mechanical Engineering, IIT Madras and Bachelor degree with Honours from PSG College of Technology. He started his career as a Deputy Engineer at Bharath Electronics Limited, Bangalore in the year 1983. He is having 30 years of teaching experience including post graduate teaching and research. He entered teaching profession as a lecturer at prestigious National Institute of Technology Tiruchirappalli (NITT) formerly known as Regional Engineering College in the year 1989 and served as a Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, NITT from May 2000 to March 2018. He headed the Department of Mechanical Engineering of NITT from 2000 to 2004 and from 2008 to 2010. He is currently the Director of NIT Puducherry. His area of interest lies in design and manufacturing processes and he has more than 90 publications in international journals and 40 research publications in international conferences. He has vast experience in power plants and has successfully completed 8 major R&D projects funded by BHEL Trichy, NLC Neyveli, MHRD and DST to the tune of about 1 crore. He has guided around 18 Ph.D scholars out of which 15 Ph.Ds were awarded with doctoral degree. His works enthusiastically for national professional organizations and he is a life member of various organizations such as Fellow of Institution of Engineers (India), Indian Society of Technical Education, Indian Welding Society and a member of Society of Automotive Engineers, India. He is also a Member of Section Committee of BIS, ETD 44 for Safety of Machinery. He has been involved in the planning, development and management of NITT by being the member Board of Governor of NITT from 2013 to 2015, Senate member since 2004, Dean (Planning & Development), and Dean (Students’ Welfare). He was selected by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, New Delhi, as Director of the NIT Puducherry (F. No. 32-14/2017–TS. III dated 19.03.2018).
The Government of India, Ministry of Human Resource Development, Dept. of Higher Education, New Delhi, had issued order for the constitution of the Board as per NIT Act 2007 and communicated the same in their letter no. 3.2 SENATEThe National Institute of Technology Tiruchirappalli (Mentor institute) Senate was adopted as Senate for the NIT Puducherry till the Institute was brought under NIT Act 2007. 4.1 COURSES OFFEREDNational Institute of Technology Puducherry offers Under Graduate Engineering course in five branches, Post Graduate Engineering course in three branches and has Doctoral Programme from the February session – 2014.
The following Courses were offered during the year under report:

Each branch of B.Tech has been sanctioned with an intake of 60 students per annum except Mechanical engineering and Civil Engineering where the sanctioned strength of student intake was 30 per annum and 15 Seats were sanctioned for M.Tech.
SUBJECTMathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Engineering Graphics, Energy and Environment Engineering, Engineering Mechanics, Basics of Programming and English subjects were taught for the students of First year. The students of Second year, Third year and Fourth year were taught branch wise syllabus of EEE, ECE, CSE, Mechanical and Civil.
Further, after joining of regular faculty, Board of studies in all the departments have been conducted and the new syllabus has been adopted.

Ph.D. SCHOLARSHIPThe National Institute of Technology Puducherry announced to provide financial support/scholarship to a few full-time research scholars who are not receiving any financial support/scholarship from other Agencies or State or Central Governments. They are required to assist the Department in the academic work for at least 8 hours per week as per guidelines issued by the Ministry of Human Resources and Development, Govt. of India, in addition to satisfying other conditions for the award/renewal of the fellowship.

4.3 ADMISSIONSimilar to other National Institutes of Technology in the country, the admission for the Under Graduate courses was made through the Joint Engineering Entrance Examination – Central Seat Allocation Board - 2018 (JEE - CSAB) rank basis.
The National Institute of Technology Puducherry has also been identified as one of the Help Center and Reporting Center by the JEE – CSAB during 2018-19.

4.4 FACULTY Due to non-availability of sufficient faculty, walk in interview was conducted on 07.07.2018 and 08.07.2018 by giving advertisement in Daily Thanthi and also displayed in Institute website.
As per the instructions of the 8th BoG meeting Item No (IV (2)), Selection Committee have been constituted. Based on the recommendations of the committee, the following faculty members were given temporary appointment on contract basis on a consolidated pay of Rs.35,000/- per month for those possessing M.Tech. 4.8 EXAMINATIONS AND RESULTSThe Examination system of National Institute of Technology, Tiruchirappalli is being followed at NIT Puducherry also.
Two cycle tests - of 20 marks each, one Internal Assessment – of 10 marks, and a semester examination – of 50 marks, will be conducted in a semester. In a year, 4 cycle tests and 2 semester examinations will be conducted. In order to assess the quality of education
provided by the faculty, the External Examiners from NIT Trichy, IIT Madras etc. were engaged.

5.1 JOINING OF REGISTRARDr. G. Seetharaman, Associate Professor, Department of ECE, NIT Nagaland has joined as Registrar, NIT Puducherry on deputation basis from 26.09.2018.
5.2 CONTRIBUTION FOR RELIEF FUNDThe employees of NIT Puducherry have contributed an amount of Rs.1,23,517/- for Chief Minister’s relief fund of flood affected people of Kerala and the amount of Rs.1,73,217/- for Gaja cyclone to the Chief Minister’s relief fund for the affected people of Puducherry and Tamil Nadu region.

6. INFRASTRUCTURE6.1 LAND The Govt. of Puducherry, Dept. of Revenue and Disaster Management, Puducherry vide G.O.Ms. No. 60 dated 4.2.2011 transferred 16.01.50 Hectares (approximately 39.5 acres) of Govt. of Puducherry puramboke lands and completed acquiring of private lands measuring 218.5 acres. The Govt. of Puducherry, Chief Secretariat (Edn), Puducherry vide G.O.Ms. No.105 dated 16.11.2012 transferred 88.52.80 Hectares the private lands acquired for the establishment of National Institute of Technology Puducherry at Poovam and Thiruvettakudy villages in Karaikal.
Hon’ble Shri N. Rangasamy, Chief Minister, Government of Puducherry had released the Government order to Dr. (Mrs.) S. K. Pandey, Director, National Institute of Technology, Puducherry at his chamber on 10.12.2012. Faculty and Administrative staff also attended the function.
6.2 CLASS ROOMS & ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICEThe NIT Puducherry academic section has been shifted to the permanent smart campus in the Science and Humanities block in the beginning of August 2016. The Science and Humanities block consists of three floors. Each floor is furnished with proper ventilation and good quality equipments. The flooring is made up of marbles/tiles and in each class room the centralized Air Conditioner provision are made. The students are made to be seated comfortably and listen to the class properly so the two seater/three seater desk & benches are allocated in class room which is in good condition. In each classroom, the green board is made and for the power point presentation the projector connection is also made. For each department Professor/Associate Professor/Assistant Professor/Faculty/Staff separate room is allocated. The library is situated in second floor with the facility of Centralized Air Condition. Institute has started the purchase process for the different pieces of furniture required for Faculty/Staff room, Library and Laboratory. The permanent campus of NIT Puducherry receives High tension electricity connection in May 2017 and also the progress of the road work with-in the campus is in good pace.

6.5 HOSTEL FACILITIESThe NIT Puducherry boys hostel and girls hostel has been shifted to the permanent smart campus at the end of July and September 2016 months respectively. The hostels are self-sufficient in power
sources including solar panels & water conservation techniques would be implemented in the campus. The hostel is well furnished with proper ventilation and good quality equipments. Nearly 700 (Seven Hundred) students are staying in the hostel in dual occupancy. The catering services have been arranged for the students with their needs such as breakfast, lunch, dinner as well as the snacks are provided in the morning and evening time along with tea/coffee. Inside the hostel campus itself, a temporary shuttle court is made for the student’s sport purposes.
All the hostels are provided with Colour T.V., Water Purifier, Carrom, Chess etc. for student use. All the students are provided with one Steel Cot, Steel Chair and Study Table in hostels. Dr. G. Aghila (Chief Warden), Dr. Narendran Rajagopalan (Additional Chief Warden), Dr. Harigovindan V P, Dr. K. Navin Sam, Dr. T. Senthil Kumar, Mr. S. Rajesh and Dr. Muthamizh Selvan have been given the wardenship of Boys hostel. Dr. G. Koperundevi, Ms. Manjith B C and Ms. S. Divya Bharathi have been given the wardenship of Girls hostel.

6.7 MESS AND TRANSPORT FACILITIESBoarding facilities were provided through a private catering firm serves Breakfast, Lunch, Evening snacks and Dinner per student at hostels.
Similarly, transport facilities were provided through a private transport firm for the pick up and drop of students. In addition, for laboratory trips to nearby colleges, Hospital trips are also covered within the same. Trips are also arranged for the students to go to Karaikal town every weekend to purchase daily needs.
6.8 NITPY HEALTH CENTRENIT Puducherry Health Centre is managed by Medical Care Committee of NIT Puducherry. It is registered under clinical establishment act of Government of Puducherry on 06/09/2018 as a Day care center under Allopathic System of Medicine. In this health centre, two doctors – one medical officer and one physician were selected to provide medical care. Three nurses are also working in the health centre to provide medical care for students, faculty and staff members. Two Ambulance drivers are also working 24 × 7 in the health centre.

7. EVENTS ORGANIZED
7.1 WORKSHOP/COURSE/CONFERENCE ORGANIZED7.1.1 Dr. N. Sendhil Kumar and Dr. V. P Harigovindan, Associate Deans Faculty Welfare, organized a two days’ workshop on “Central Civil services (conduct & CCA) Rules” on 21st and 22nd February 2019. The Resource person was Dr. R. P. Acharya, Director and Deputy Legal Adviser, Department of Atomic Energy. All the regular faculty and staff members were participants of this workshop.
7.1.2 Dr. N. Sendhil Kumar and Dr. V P Harigovindan, Associate Deans Faculty Welfare, organized a one-week faculty development programme on “Instructional Design and Delivery systems” from 4th December to 9th December 2018 @ second floor, SF7, Science Block, NIT Puducherry for newly recruited faculty members. Teaching learning principles, Framing Instructional Outcomes, Student Psychology and Motivation, Teaching with Technology, Micro Teaching, etc., were the part of this FDP. Resource persons were from National Institute of Technical Teachers Training & Research, Taramani, Chennai.
7.1.3 Dr. Sendhil Kumar Natarajan, Assistant Professor and Head, Department of Mechanical Engineering, organized two days national conference on “Recent Advances in Fuel cells and Solar Energy” from 11th -12th May 2019.
7.1.4 NITPY has initiated a new programme named “LEAP” for Government and Private school students to crack JEE Examination and the programme Inauguration Ceremony was conducted at Danal Thangavel Mandapam, Karaikal on 7.01.2019 at 5.00 to 7.30 P.M. Students, Parents, Faculties of NITPY attended the Inauguration Ceremony.

7.2 INVITED TALKDr. G. Lakshmi Sutha, Assistant Professor and HoD, Department of ECE, had arranged a meeting with Dr. Ragavan, Associate Professor (Electrical Engineering), IIT Gandhinagar for III ECE and III EEE students of NIT Puducherry to explain about Start Early Ph.D. and Early Admit M.Tech Programmes of IIT Gandhinagar on 29th September 2018.
7.3 INNOVATION CLUB National Institute of Technology has established Institution Innovation Council (IIC) as per the norms of Innovation cell, Ministry of HRD, Govt. of India on 21st November 2018. 1. Dr. N. M. Sivaram, AP/Mech, innovation club member, NITPY and 10 students from NITPY attended the dissemination workshop organized by MHRD innovation cell to cover different initiatives of MHRD Innovation Cell (MIC) including a session on Atal Ranking of Institutions on Innovation Achievement (ARIIA) and Smart India Hackathon 2019 at SRM TRP Engineering College, Trichy on 9th Jan 2019.

The electric bike proposal submitted by a team of students of NIT Puducherry was recommended for financial support under Project Expo to GYANITH 2019 by innovation club, NIT Puducherry. The electric bike was successfully demonstrated in GYANITH’ 19.
Science expo and Project expo for school students and engineering students were organized by the Innovation Club, NIT Puducherry on 28th February 2019 and 1st March 2019 respectively during the Tech Fest, GYANITH’19. The students were given with certificates and lucrative prizes for the winners. ‘Art your Thought’ is organized by the innovation club to showcase the artistic skills of school students during GYANITH’19 and attractive prizes were given to the winners.

8. FUNCTIONS AND EXTRA CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES8.1 SPORTS DAY CELEBRATION
NIT Puducherry has celebrated Sports Day on 6th and 7th April 2018. The inaugural function was organized on 6th April, 2018, with March – Past and Olympic torch relay lighted by the distinguished Director, Dr. K. Sankaranarayanasamy. Subsequently annual sports day oath was delivered by all the house captain and participants from NIT Puducherry. As a part of the inaugural function, Dr. S. Babu, Students Activities and Sports Officer (SASO) delivered the welcome address. Presidential address was given by the Director and the Inaugural address by the Chief Guest Mr. N. Somasundaram, Commanding Office, Indian Cost Guard, Karaikal. Finally, Ms. Sheffin Ryna (Sports Secretary) gave the vote of thanks. Sports day valedictory function was organized on 7th April, 2018, the function began with welcome address by Mr. Abishek
Kumar Singh (Sports President) followed by Presidential address given by chief guest for the valedictory function, Mr. Rajasekaran (former International Hockey Player). The winners were awarded with trophies and certificates by the chief guest. Nearly sixteen games, twenty-one athletics events for boys and girls and seven events for the faculty and staff were conducted. Finally, Mr. Nikhil Kumar, Sports representative delivered the vote of thanks.
8.2 AMBEDKAR JAYANTHI CELEBRATIONThe SC/ST Cell of NIT Puducherry celebrated Dr. B. R. Ambedkar Jayanthi on 14th April 2018 which was attended by the Director, faculty members, staff and the students of the Institute.

8.4 INDEPENDENCE DAY CELEBRATIONNIT Puducherry celebrated 72nd Independence Day on 15th August 2018. Dr. K. Sankaranarayanasamy, the Director, presided over the ceremony, and hoisted the national flag which was followed by the national anthem. The Director addressed the students and staff of the Institute and shared his vision towards development of the nation through education. The students enthusiastically showcased their talents through songs and other cultural programs. The Director released the first issue of 2018, newsletter “Pariprashna”, The students who proactively volunteered and worked for Unnat Bharat Abhiyan were honored with trophies and certificates by the Director.
8.3 BLOOD DONATION CAMP NIT Puducherry organized a blood donation camp on 01.02.2019 from 09.00 AM to 01.00 PM. Seventy units of blood with some units of rare blood group were donated to JIPMER.This event was coordinated by Dr. Amrtha Bhide, Students Welfare and Dr. V. Govindaraj, NSS Programme officer. The volunteers made a big support for this blood camp.
The Art and Crafts club of the institute also exhibited a few photographs of various leaders during the occasion.

8.6 GANDHI JAYANTHI CELEBRATIONNIT Puducherry showed its reverence to Mahatma Gandhi the Father of the Nation on 02.10.18. The Day started with paying homage to Gandhiji and garlanding his photo. A beautiful Documentary was prepared by the students and was presented to the audience. Some cultural singing and dance events were performed by the students on the stage. Two students gave Hindi & English Speech. The Day ended with a tributary note.
8.5 ELECTORAL LITERACY CLUBThe institute volunteered to have an Electoral Literacy Club at the Institute to discuss and propagate the importance of the election and voting process among the young students. The Club was formalized on 23rd August, 2018 in the presence of Sub Collector, Mr. Vikrant Raja IAS, Karaikal, Dr. Mohan, State Level Trainer for Electoral Literacy and Dr. K. Sankaranarayanasamy, Director, NIT Puducherry. The Inaugural ceremony witnessed the active participation of students, and was well coordinated by Dr. S. Babu, Nodal Officer - ELC and Dr. Amrtha Bhide, Associate Dean Student Welfare.

8.7 SWACHH BHARAT ABHIYANAs a support towards Swachh Bharat Abhiyan from the MHRD, a Swachh Bharat Summer Internship with a theme “Swachh Poovam” was carried out by a team of B.Tech Students, Mr. Bharath Kumar, Mr. Balaram and Mr. Sai Krishna during 3rd July 2018 to 16th July 2018 at a village neighbouring our campus. The internship was guided by Dr. G. Aghila and Dr. Amrtha Bhide.
8.8 NSS ACTIVITY1. Due to the scenario of Dengue fever in Puducherry and Tamil Nadu, Nilavembu Kashayam was provided to all the students, faculties and
staffs including our Director and Registrar on 20.11.2018 at 12.00 to 1.30 PM.

8.9 REPUBLIC DAY CELEBRATIONThe Republic Day was celebrated on 26th January 2019 at 7.30 to 9:00 AM. There was a Parade by NITPY NCC Cadets and NSS students and Security Guards. The flag was hoisted by Director Dr. K. Sankaranarayanasamy. Students have sang patriotic songs and conducted elocution. The event concluded with tree plantation in the campus and by distribution of prizes for various competitions (Quiz, essay and elocution) held on topics related with constitution of India.

8.10 VIGILANCE AWARENESS WEEKVigilance awareness week was held during 29.10.2018 to 03.11.2018, with a theme “Eradicate Corruption - Build a New India”. On these days, slogans/banners are displayed in the campus. The ‘elocution competition’ on the theme “Eradicate Corruption - Build a New India” has been conducted for the NITPY students in association with ONGC Karaikal, around 10 students enthusiastically participated in the competition and have won lucrative prizes. The awareness among the public has been created through ‘walkathon’, around 100 students took part in the walkathon. The teaching and non-teaching staffs also enthusiastically took part in the event. To create awareness among the school children in their budding age itself, drawing competition on the theme “Eradicate Corruption- Build a New India” has been conducted in the school named “Govt. Primary School Kottucherry Medu, Karaikal”, around 24 students have actively and enthusiastically participated in the competition and have won attractive prizes.

8.11 TECHNICAL FESTGyanith’19, the annual technical fest of NIT Puducherry, was held from 28th February to 2nd March 2019. Gyanith was inaugurated on 28th February 2019 by the chief guest, Mr. Abhishek Sinha, Head (R&D India), Alcatel Lucent Pvt. Ltd. in presence of the Director, Dr. K. Sankaranarayanasamy and the Registrar, Dr. G. Seetharaman. All faculty, staff, students and participants attended the inauguration. Gyanith was chaired by Dr. D. Ragupathy and Dr. T. Vinopraba and convened by Dr. R. Chandrasekar. Workshops and technical events were conducted in Gyanith’19. Five hundred participants attended the workshops and the events. The prizes and certificates were distributed in the valedictory ceremony held on 2nd March 2019 by the chief guest Shri. N. Thangavel (Manager, ONGC-Karaikal) and the Director Dr. K. Sankaranarayanasamy.
Ten workshops were conducted, namely, Introduction to Deep Learning, Web and Hybrid App development, Uno-Botics, Smart Home Automation using IOT, Auto-Fiesta, Aperture, Ethical Hacking, Android App Development, Artificial Intelligence and Internet of Things. Sixteen events were conducted, namely, Cosmo War, Reverse Code, Avishkar (Paper Presentation), Burn Out, Offset, Closed Circuit, Project Exposition, Science Exposition, Shake It, Brick It, Cad It, Robo
Soccer, Maze Follower, Code Uno, Bird Box Coding and Code and Slay. The participants gained a lot of knowledge about the latest technology and working of various devices by attending the workshops. Participants also got a platform to expose their talent through the events. There were new and innovative ideas discussed and showcased by the participants in the paper presentation event and expositions. Overall, Gyanith’19 was a platform for the student organizers and participants to develop and exhibit their technical and managerial skills.
8.12 NATIONAL VOTERS DAYFaculty, staff and students took an oath in connection with National Voters’ Day on 25-1-2019. The Electoral Literacy Club arranged an awareness program to the students to register for Voters ID and methods to resolve grievances related with Voter ID. Students of the institute attended the 2kms Rally which was held at Collector Office, Karaikal through Church Road, Bharathiar Road on 25.01.2019 from 9.00 AM to 11.00 AM and it was the day of 70th National Voter’s Day.

8.13 YOGA DAYIn pursuance of the directive issued by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Department of Higher Education, vide circular and F.No.16-07-2018-NS-1 letter dated 27th May 2018, International Day of Yoga was celebrated on 21st June 2018 at the Institute campus. To build awareness about Yoga and overall growth of an individual, in terms of body, mind and soul was the primary objective of the event. District level Yoga competition was conducted on 20th June 2018, in the age category, below 10, 11 to 15 and 16 to 22. More than two hundred and fifty students from various schools and colleges in and around Karaikal participated in the competition. Certificates and trophies were awarded to the winners of each category by the Director, Dr. K. Sankaranarayanasamy.
8.14 SWACHHATA HI SEVANSS activities were held in the first month of January 2019, under the theme Swachhata Hi Seva. Arts and crafts club of NIT Puducherry team visited nearby schools and made wall painting on the theme of Swachh Bharat. The program was guided by the program officer Dr V Govindraj.

NITPY - NSS unit performed awareness campaigns for students of Kamaraj Government High School, Poovam along with student & faculty members volunteers of NIT Puducherry as a part of observance of Swachhata Hi Seva week to bring awareness on various environmental issues and its impact in their daily life. Swachhata pledge was also taken by the students at the end. Outstanding students were given prizes at the end of the program.
8.15 LITERARY COMMITTEE ACTIVITIESThe Literary Committee conducted number of literary activities like Debate Competition, Essay Writing Competition, Extempore, Slogan Writing, Spell Bee, Story Telling competition, etc., throughout the year 2018-19. The committee aims at increasing the literary sensibility of students along with development of language competence. The Events attracted active participation of Students and they were rewarded with certificates and lucrative prizes.
8.16 INSTITUTIONAL SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY (ISR) ACTIVITYStudents of the institute have taken an initiative for teaching school kids to boost their learning abilities and personality development. They have chosen the RMASP Government High School, Karaikalmedu and adopted 7th standard children of both English and Tamil medium. In this regard, the student volunteers organized a review and feedback interaction session on 8th April, 2018 at NIT Puducherry campus. The main objective of the activity with the vision “inspired by love, guided by knowledge” was to take up 7th standard children and retain continuous interaction with them on every Saturdays for next four academic years, so that when the NIT students graduate with B.Tech degree, the adopted school children will also pass out of SSLC. The director Prof. Dr. K. Sankaranarayanasamy appreciated and encouraged such unique initiative from the students, and assured further support.

8.17 NATIONAL FIRE SAFETY WEEKOn the occasion of National Fire Service Week from 14.04.2018 to 20.04.2018, Mr. Sirusendu Hati, Chief Manager, Fire Service, ONGC and Mr. Mohammed Raiss, Fire Officer, ONGC, Karaikal demonstrated different Fire Extinguisher Methodologies. The occasion was well supported with the attendance of the Director, Dr. K. Sankaranarayanasamy, Faculty, Staff, students and security personnel who gained and appreciated the knowledge on fire extinguishing technologies.
8.18 ANTI TERRORISM DAYAnti-terrorism day was witnessed at NIT Puducherry campus on May 21st 2018. In this event all faculty, staff and students have taken a mass pledge against terrorism.

8.22 TRIBUTE TO THE BRAVE SOLDIERSTribute to the Brave Soldiers who scarified lives during the terrorists attack at Pulwama was held on 14th February 2019. NCC cadets, Students, faculty of staff have paid their respects to the portraits of the CRPF soldiers through candle light and floral tribute.

9. ACHIEVEMENTS OF STUDENTS
1. Mr. Pugazhenthi A., Research Scholar/ECE, has participated in Badminton Competition held at National Institute of Technology Puducherry, Karaikal, on occasion of Annual Sports meet, during March 2018, and secured winners position.
2. Mr. Pugazhenthi A., Research Scholar/ECE, has participated in All India Inter NIT Badminton Tournament 2018, held at National Institute of Technology, Warangal, Andhra Pradesh.
3. Mr. Ramkumar S., Research Scholar/ECE, received Elite Certification from Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur, under National Program on Technology Enhanced Learning (NPTEL) Online Certification (NOC), for securing 79% in proctored examination in subject Digital Circuits, during July-October, 2018.
4. Mr. E. Muthusankar, Research Scholar/ECE, has received Short Term Research Fellowship Award from Ministry of Education, Taiwan and underwent short term research work at Taiwan, during November 2018 - March 2019.
5. Harshini V S, II M.Tech/ECE (Communication systems), has won the best paper award for her research paper titled “Design of Hybrid sorting unit” at the 6th IEEE International Conference on Smart Structures and Systems held at Saveetha Engineering college on 14th &15th March 2019.
6. Harshit Agrawal and Mihira Madhava Bollapragada, B.Tech/ECE students, have won 2nd prize in the Wall Painting competition in FESTEMBER 2018 conducted by NIT Tiruchirappalli from 13-16 September 2018.

1. BASIS FOR PREPARATION OF ACCOUNTS
The Accounts are prepared under the Historical Cost Convention, unless otherwise stated, and generally on the accrual method of accounting.
2. REVENUE RECOGNITION
Fee collection from students and interest on Savings Bank accounts are accounted for on cash basis. Interest on Term Deposits is accounted for on accrual basis.
3. FIXED ASSETS AND DEPRECIATION
3.1. Fixed Assets are stated at cost of acquisition including inward freight, duties and taxes, incidental and direct expenses related to acquisition, installation and commissioning. Fixed Assets are valued at cost less accumulated depreciation. Depreciation on Fixed Assets is provided on Straight Line Method, as per rates specified by the Ministry for the guidelines for preparation of Uniform Accounting Format prescribed with the approval of the Ministry.
3.2. Depreciation is provided for the whole year on additions during the year irrespective of the date of purchase. Where an asset if fully depreciated, it will be carried at a residual value of Re.1 in the Balance sheet and will not be further depreciated. Asset created out of Sponsored projects, where the ownership of such asset did not vest with the Institution, are considered separately and value intimated in Note on Accounts as per Ministry guidelines.
4. STOCKS
Expenditure on purchase of consumables, payment of subscriptions and other stores are accounted as revenue and purchases are being made based on necessity then and there hence no stock exhibited in the accounts as on 31.3.2019.
5. RETIREMENT BENEFITS
Provision for Gratuity and Leave Encashment for 2018-19 obtained from registered Actuarial Valuer has been exhibited in Schedule-15A as per guidelines
6. INVESTMENTS
Short term deposits made based on availability of surplus mentioned at their cost.
7. CORPUS/CAPITAL FUND
Capital Expenditure on purchase of Equipment amounting to Rs.3.99 crore and Rs.22.72 crore Expenditure debited by CPWD on Work in Progress added during 2018-19 under Capital Fund. Under Recurring Excess of Expenditure over income amounting to Rs.5.56 crore deducted from Grant and shown in Schedule-10. Deprecation amount of Rs.1.43 crore deducted from Equipment exhibited in Capital Fund Account.
8. GOVERNMENT GRANTS
Government Grants are accounted on realization basis. However, where a sanction for release of grant pertaining to the financial year is received before 31st March will be exhibited in the accounts as Grant in Transit as per Ministry Guidelines. No such grant received during 2018-19. Grants utilized for Capital Expenditure and Recurring Expenditure are accounted on accrual basis and exhibited in Schedule 3 C along with CPWD Deposit as per Ministry guidelines.

9. SPONSORED PROJECTS
Grants received from various agencies for Sponsored research projects are dealt separately and exhibited in Schedule 3A as per Ministry guidelines.
10. INCOME TAX
The Income of the Institution is exempt from Income Tax as per Section 10(23c) of I.T. Act. Hence no provision of tax is made in the Accounts.
11. EXPENDITURE IN FOREIGN CURRENCY
No expenditure was incurred in Foreign Currency during the year under report.
12. CURRENT ASSETS, LOANS AND ADVANCES
Loans, Advances and Deposits have realization value in the ordinary course to the aggregate amount shown in the Balance Sheet.
13. BANK BALANCES
No Cash Transaction is being entertained. All transactions are being made through Institute Accounts. Current Account is being used for collection of fee and transferred to Savings Account for Fee collection. Details of balances in Current Account, Savings Bank Accounts and Term Deposit Receipts with State Bank of India, Karaikal branch is exhibited in Schedule 7.
14. REGROUPING OF FIGURES
Regrouping of figures made in previous year figures where ever necessary.
15. ROUNDING OFF
Figures in the final accounts have been rounded off to the nearest rupee.
16. NEW PENSION SCHEME
Recovery of subscription from employee and Employer contribution are transferred to separate account maintained for the purpose and remitted to NSDL periodically. Separate Statement of Accounts prepared attached as per Ministry guidelines for Uniform Accounting procedure.

1. CONTINGENT LIABILITIES
National Institute of Technology Puducherry has no court cases in any part of the Country regarding establishment matters and admissions. No disputes relating to any settlements and hence no contingent liabilities for the Institute at present. Administrative approval was accorded for 02 New construction works during 2018-19 viz construction of Administrative block and laboratory block to CPWD. Rs. 26.06 crore was deposited with CPWD during 2018-19 for the new and ongoing works. Rs. 11.74 crore available with CPWD as on 31.03.2019 under Deposit after adjusting work in progress expenditure.
2. PERMANENT CAMPUS
The Government of Puducherry has provided 258.33 acres of land in Poovam and Thiruvettakudy Villages in Karaikal region. The Institute with the approval of the competent authority has entrusted all works relating to construction of buildings in the new campus were entrusted to Central Public Works Department of Government of India.
The following Building works entrusted to CPWD were completed and building occupied. 1. Science Block 2.Boys Hostel 3. Girls Hostel 4. Professor quarters 5. Director Bungalow.
Capitalization of the above said building works is in progress by a committee constituted for this purpose. On receipt of cost completion certificate, handing over report, utilization certificate in prescribed format from CPWD along with the report of the committee the cost of building will be capitalized.
3. INVESTMENT AND INTEREST ON GRANTS
Considering the availability of surplus funds and utility period, Investment is being made in Term Deposits for short term. The interest on deposit of Rs. 0.80 crore credited to Corpus/Capital Fund as per existing practice.
4. GRANTS IN AID
4.1 The Government of India, Ministry of Human Resource Development, New Delhi had released a sum of Rs.5.28 crore for Salary/General Expenses and Rs.31.29 crore for Creation of Capital Assets during 2017-18. All the grants received exhibited in Schedule 3 C.
4.2 The Institute got two new Sponsored Research Projects from UGC & DST, SERB during 2018-19 and funds were received. The project funds are kept in Research Project Account separately and exhibited in Schedule 3 A.
5. FIXED ASSETS AND CAPITAL WORK IN PROGRESS
The Institute had incurred a sum of Rs.3.99 crore towards purchase of Equipment for various laboratories/Workshop, Furniture for Class rooms/Faculty& Staff, Software/E- Journals etc. All capital expenses are exhibited in Sch. 1 Capital Fund under Liability and Sch. 4 Fixed Assets under Asset. Rs 22.71 crore expenditure by CPWD as per form 65 shown under work in progress.
Equipment worth Rs.0.37 crore was procured out of Sponsored Research Funds and not included in Fixed Asset of the Institute since the ownership vests with the sponsoring agencies.

6. NEW PENSION SCHEME
The Institute is maintaining separate Savings Bank Account for New Pension Scheme. Separate Statement of Accounts for the funds transacted in the said account is prepared and annexed in the Annual Accounts of the Institute as per guidelines of the Ministry.
